Atul Kulkarni, who has won the hearts of Marathi and Hindi film lovers during the past few years, with his intense acting skills; has a big surprise for Marathi movie fans. On 1st January 2010, he will enlighten all of us with his new film ‘Natarang’- the ambitious and most talked about project of Zee Talkies. In ‘Natarang’ Atul plays a passionate Guna Kagalkar, whose ultimate ambition is to live his dream of becoming the king in tamasha (One of Maharashtra’s oldest traditional art forms).
There are very few actors today, who have successfully managed their Hindi as well as Marathi film careers simultaneously. And, we all are eager to know how Atul has succeeded in doing this perfect balancing act? And, this is what the prolific actor has to say, “Film scripts are more important for me than the language of the film. I have never accepted any random film offers, just for the sake of being a regular face in the film industry. Same is with Hindi. Meaningful cinema, which lets me explore my talent to the fullest and different roles, is more important to me than just doing more and more films. Quality over quantity, to be precise”.
If you watch him in that climax scene of Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Jail’, it makes very clear as to what he has in his mind, while portraying his character of a defense lawyer. Indeed, Atul has succeeded in inviting the attention of one and all in that few minutes scene.
MMW tried to find out how Atul reacted, when he was offered Guna’s role in ‘Natarang’ and this his how he reacted, “When Zee Talkies and Ravi Jadhav- the director, approached me for Natarang, I was excited. I like the kind of roles which scare me. Initially, I was very anxious about how I would portray the role of Guna as a wrestler as well as a nachya. Later, I prepared myself and left it to the audience. I myself don’t know, how I portrayed it. Such film offers, do motivate me and I would love to accept such challenges. I consider myself lucky, to be offered this role of Guna. To be honest, Guna was definitely a big challenge for me”.
Now talking more about Guna kagalkar , all that Atul has to say is that this character is an amateur wrestler, whose most zealous dream is to be the king in a tamasha. But later, this dream gets new dimensions, as for the sake of the art, he has to sacrifice his dream of becoming the king. It was necessary for him to totally involve himself in this movie- both physically as well as mentally. He had to work hard for building his body to look like a real wrestler. And to pursue his passion towards art, Guna had to be shown as a nachya later in the film, which required him to lose weight in just a month and a half. It was a big physical risk too. However, with the help of internationally acclaimed trainer Shailesh Parulekar, he achieved it, with great efforts. That’s the sincerity shown by Atul towards his profession.
One needs to look back and see his progression as an actor right from the days of his training in National School of Drama, Delhi. And then with those performances in ‘Hey Ram’and ‘Chandni Bar’, Atul has really made it big today, with this role of Guna in ‘Natarang’. MMW wishes him a grand and prosperous new year, on the occasion of his film’s release.
