Why Marathi films can’t be released during Diwali?

Marathi Film in multiplex, Diwali Festival

Diwali is the best time to attract families to cinema theatres. And, our Hindi film makers very well know the importance of this period, to release their films. For the past few years, we have been watching films of Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan , Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar releasing during this period and making good earnings. Some films plan their release even before Friday to take advantage of the Diwali holidays. But, we haven’t seen any Marathi film maker taking this advantage.

Many a times, we hear about the problem of non availability of cinema halls. Why can’t we fight for our rights in our state of Maharashtra, where multiplex cinema owners are required to offer one screen compulsorily for Marathi films. two years ago, we had seen the fire in some of the film makers who came forward and took up this matter with the cultural Minister of Maharashtra. But, it seems that now our Marathi film makers have decided to go on the back foot and are willing to release their films during the period when no big banner Hindi film is releasing. They don’t mind releasing three or four Marathi films at a time and compete among themselves. Marathi film ‘Boyz’ which was simultaneously released along with other Marathi film, is still running in 20 theatres in and around Mumbai in the 6th week. So, we can’t believe that Marathi films can’t find cinema halls. If the film is good, it will find more cinema halls in subsequent week.

Hindi film makers with big banners are taking the Marathi film makers for granted and they very well know that no Marathi films will be released along with their films. Now days, they have started promoting their films in Marathi entertainment programmes, tempting the Marathi viewers to watch their films. Situation is no different this week too.

But, when we watch the demand for Marathi dramas, we find all shows housefull. Some of the shows are held even early hours of the 1st day of Diwali. Why can’t we think of releasing our Marathi films in Drama theatres in a matinee show. Who knows? It may work.
