Every Sardar and every soldier of the Maratha army played an important role in strengthening the power of the Great warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Film maker Digpal Lanjekar who offered us two films namely ‘Farzand’ and ‘Fatteshikast’ were based on the bravery acts of such Sardars and soldiers. The latest film of writer- director Digpal Lanjekar offers the episode of aggressive battle of Pavankhind fought between Maratha Sardar Baji Prabhu Deshpande along with Bandal Army comprising of only 600 soldiers with the mighty 10,000 + army of Adilshah Sultanate led by Siddi Masud.

It was a well planned battle to mislead the enemy and enable Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to reach Vishalgad through safe route. The film highlights the sacrifice of Baji Prabhu Deshpande and the Bandal army, while fighting the enemy in this region. So, the film is a tribute to Baji Prabhu Deshpande and all those soldiers from his army who were severely injured and laid down their lives for the safety of their beloved King.

The film has therefore given enough scope to Ajay Purkar, who has played the important role of Baji Prabhu Deshpande. He seems to be the favourite of the director, as in his earlier films he had played equally important characters of Tanaji Malusare and Motyaji Khalekar. Another artiste who invites all the attention is Harish Dudhade in the role of Bahirji Naik. At present, he is most popular actor on Marathi television. It may be recalled that Harish had played the character of Bahirji Naik very efficiently in Digpal’s previous film ‘Fatteshikast’.

Among others, Chinmay Mandlekar as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mrinal Kulkarni as Rajmata Jijau, Ankit Mohan with his strong physique as Rayaji Bandal and Kshiti Jog as Badi Begum make their presence felt in this multi starrer film, which concludes with the great battle in Maratha history , in which both the sides suffered heavy casualties. And therefore, we notice a lot of bloodshed while watching these action scenes. At the same time, there are many emotion filled scenes reminding about the love and respect every soldier from Maratha army had for their brave King. This film is now available for viewing on Amazon Prime.

Marathi artistes are making good progress in Hindi web series

During this lock down period, when the release of films, shows of Dramas and shootings of films and TV serials have come to a halt, many home viewers have switched over to web series. And when we go through some of the Hindi web series released on different web channels in the recent past, we find many Marathi artistes in prominent roles.

In the newly released web series ‘Hundred’ on Hotstar Specials , Rinku Rajguru finds a parallel role along with Lara Dutta and the trailer of this series clearly indicates that she has a lead role. There are other two Marathi Actor Hrishikesh Joshi and Rohini Hattangadi who have also found prominent roles. Incidentally, Hrishikesh Joshi was also seen in a prominent role of a police Inspector in another popular web series ‘Breathe’ shown on Amazon Original video.

On the same channel there is another Hindi and Marathi serial ‘Samantar’ starring Swwapnil Joshi and Nitish Bharadwaj. There is another web channel Voot , which offers an interesting Hindi web series ‘The Raikar Case’ a murder mystery directed by Aditya Sarpotdar , which also stars Atul Kulkarni , Ashwini Bhave, Manva Naik , Lalit Prabhakar, Ajay Purkar and Vaishnavi Kadam in prominent roles along with well known Hindi artistes. Gripping ‘Code Mantra’ draws a full house on 1st day of New year

Code Mantra Marathi Play Image
Mukta Barve and Ajay Purkar, Marathi play ‘Code Mantra

Mukta Barve‘s gripping Marathi play ‘Code Mantra has already played 100 shows in just six month’s time, ever since it was launched in June 2016. Incidentally, besides playing the lead role of a military law expert, Mukta Barve is also producer of ‘Code Mantra’, along with other co producers. This play being very close to her heart, you find the finest presentation on Marathi stage, with wonderful performances coming from her and her co stars like Ajay Purkar, Umesh Jagtap, Kaustubh Diwan and many others totaling about 40. The play has special significance, as it is set on the backdrop of an unusual happening in Maratha regiment of Indian Army.

On the first day of this new year, this play was performed at Borivali’s Prabodhankar Thackeray Auditorium and drew a full house, which obviously boosted the morale of the entire team of ‘Code Mantra’. We are all aware about the acting skills of talented Mukta Barve ; but it was nice to see the best from another talented actor Ajay Purkar, whom TV home viewers only recognize as a character actor. Through this play, Ajay plays the lead character of Col. Prataprao Nimbalkar a responsible and powerful Army Officer of Indian Army. Obviously, when both these important characters come face to face on the stage, we find the exchange of fire through words, which have been cleverly captured by the director Rajesh Joshi a well Known director of Gujarathi plays and TV serials and making his debut in Marathi through this play.

Code Mantra‘, which has a good subject, has been cleverly presented by the director, to hold the audience to their seats. Through this play, the audience come to know about different ranks of Indian Army and their functions. But, what captures the audience is the presentation of the script. The post interval session is more gripping and filled with suspense, as we notice many interesting happenings. All in all, the cast and technical support team display an excellent team work. Besides wonderful performances by all the artistes, the superb background music, excellent lighting and above all, the captivating realistic set design make ‘Code Mantra’ a worth watch.
