Shrikant Yadav, Actor

“My one scene in ‘Vihir’ brought me closer to Big B” – Shrikant Yadav

He has been associated with marathi theatre for the past 12 years. But, his association with Umesh and Girish Kulkarni brought him to Marathi Cinema. In the year 2005, he found an opportunity to play the most important role of a helpless farmer who is forced to sell his Bull, much against the wish of his son and wife. ‘Valu’ was a touching film, which won many awards at international festivals.

Shrikant YadavThen it was ‘Vihir’, where he was associated with production, being very close to Girish Kulkarni. But, Shrikant Yadav, being a passionate actor, wanted to be a part of the film as an actor, however small the role was. So, he was offered just one scene, where he played a pick pocket. It was a pleasure talking to this avid actor, during the first look of new Marathi film ‘Night School’.

Shrikant’s small role as a pickpocket became a part of an important scene, as it was that incident which takes the lead actor of the film towards death. “This scene was discussed by the members of Jury during Berlin festival and I am glad that it also gave me an opportunity to meet Mr. Amitabh Bachchan there, whose ABCL company produced this film.” says Shrikant. He recalls all those memorable moments of his Berlin trip, where Dr. Mohan Agashe, who was also part of this film said that he was returning for this festival after 35 years. “He had carried his cap, which was preserved by him for 35 years and which was presented to him during the screening of ‘Saamna’ at the same festival.” he added .

Shrikant played another important role in Umesh and Girish’s recent film ‘Deool’, which won the national award for the best Indian film. He played a protagonist- Appa Galande, who revolts against his own uncle Bhau Galande, played by Nana Patekar. It was a difficult role; but Shrikant played it with ease. His sharp looks and body language spoke everything about his talent and personality.

A Mechanical Engineer, Shrikant still continues to work for BSNL, in Pune and prefers to perform in such off beat films, which find place for him. He doesn’t seem to be much interested in TV serials, as his job would not permit him to spend so much of time. But, as an organizer, he plays a crucial role in cultural activities of BSNL. Srikanth’s forthcoming films are ‘Pune 52′ and ‘Night School’. In ‘Night School’ he plays an influential Bar owner involved in illegal activities, who later reforms into a well wisher of the Night school. This film is due for release on 2nd November 2012.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

After two sensible films ‘Valu’ and ‘Vihir’, the team of Umesh Kulkarni and Girish Kulkarni unite once again with their artistic work, through their latest released film ‘Deool’.

Besides perfect presentation of a village life supported by superb portrayal of characters by versatile artistes,’Deool’ successfully manages to depict the image of today’s rural India and the effect of globalisation on the lives of the people living there.

The film revolves around one such village Umbra in Maharashtra, which is otherwise peaceful and slow moving in progress, having been exploited by a local politician Bhau ( Nana Patekar), who is a tool at the hands of his party chief ( Mohan Agashe). Bhau cleverly manages the people from the village, including the lady Sarpanch (Atisha Naik) and proves how liberal he is, in treating the women folks. He also keeps his wife (Sonali Kulkarni) happy but sends his two daughters to Boarding school to keep them away from village life.
Bhau, respects the only educated and sensible senior citizen Anna( Dilip Prabhavalkar) , who lives all alone with his son and his family living in Bangaluru. When Anna comes up with a hospital project for the benefit of villagers, Bhau supports his idea and agrees to find finance through his party chief. In the meanwhile, a young labourer Keshav, working at Bhau’s house sees Lord Dattaguru in his dreams, while he takes a nap in the deserted place below a tree, after searching for his missing cow. When he wakes up, he is all excited and starts disclosing this miracle to whoever he comes across, on his way back home.

When Keshav narrates this incidence to Anna, he advises him not to disclose it to anyone and suggests him to keep his faith to his own self. But, the news spreads to the village and a Journalist who is a friend of the youths from the village including the nephew of Bhau, suggests them to sensationalize this matter. He convinces Bhau’s nephew and other friends the importance of this news and suggests them to turn this villlgae into a pilgrim centre. Bhau’s nephew goes one step ahead of his uncle and takes the Party chief into confidence. Bhau has no other way left but to take alongwith him the youth of the village and succumb to their demands. Fed up with this politics Anna decides to leave the village and moves to Bangaluru to join his son. Even Keshav desists himself from the materialistic living of the villagers, especially after the death of his cow.
The excellent realistic presentation of the film in the first half, manages to keep the audience engrossed into their daily life; but after interval slows down a bit with irrelevant scenes. It picks up after those breaks, only to conclude with unexpected climax, which is open ended for the audience to decide.

Nana Patekar

The most sensible person in this film- Anna deciding to quit the village, itself shows the helplessness of sensible people living in this country. The film had ample scope to show that there is law which does not spare those into corrupt practices, as suggested by the character of Anna to Bhau, in one of the scenes; but that does not happen in this film’s climax. There was also scope to show the villagers realising how important it was to have a Hospital project for their village, rather than playing with the sentiments of the devotees. But, that too does not happen in the climax.

The only young man Keshav does his best in his own way, but his efforts don’t bring the desired results. The film therefore does not succeed totally in removing blind faith, but only keeps the reality before the audience. There is no doubt that the selection of artistes for the respective characters is a perfect choice and so are the well written dialogues. Wonderful photography, perfect editing and best sound effect makes this film more presentable technically . Music by Magesh Dhakade is just appropriate for this film.

Direction of Umesh Kulkarni clearly shows, how perfect he has been with his study of village life. There has been lot of hard work during the film’s making, managing such a big team of talented artistes. Lead actor -Nana Patekar rocks in the role of Bhau; but it is Girish Kulkarni, who in the role of Keshav is more impressive. With excellent support coming from a big team of artistes, the film is more like a performance oriented film. Watch the expressions of Mohan Agashe, playing a shrewd politician, watch the body language of Usha Nadkarni, simple but perfect housewife played by Sonali Kulkarni and that guest apperance by Naseeruddin Shah, as a stranger coming to the village; they all are extraordinary!

‘Deool’ inviting attention at International fests

Nana

Afrer having received recognition from Rotterdam Festival for its unusual script, Abhijit Gholap’s Marathi film ‘Deool’ is now all set to participate at various international festivals during the month of October 2011. The film has already received invitations from MAMI, Pusan, Abu Dhabi and The South East Asian International Film festivals.

The world premiere of this film will be held during Pusan film festival in South Korea on the 8th of October 2011, while the Indian Premiere will be held during the forthcoming MAMI film festival in Mumbai.

“We have not made this film keeping in mind the international audience, but the universal theme of this film has invited the attention of the people across the world,” says Umesh Kulkarni, the director of this film. The film has raised hopes because of the involvement of two big artistes like Nana Patekar and Dilip Prabhavalkar playing opposite each other. Sonali Kulkarni and Girish Kulkarni also play important roles in this film. It looks like that the film will be officially released only after the World Premiere and Indian premiere next month.

Atisha Naik, Supriya Pathare, Actress

Atisha and Supriya – The bad women on small screen, with good heart

Atisha Naik and Supriya Pathare are known faces on small screen for their negative roles. One doesn’t know, how many housewives totally engrossed in their serials must be cursing them; but, in real life, both of them are fun loving and cheerful women. Marathi Movie world, spoke to both of them simultaneously, a little before an award function in Mumbai, recently. At present, both of them are performing together in an old revived Marathi stage play ‘Varyavarchi Varaat’ and hence were seen together, in a jovial mood sharing their experiences.

Atisha Naik, Supriya Pathare, ActressAtisha Naik, Supriya Pathare Atisha has been in the field of acting since she was 8 years old, when she made her debut in a Marathi play ‘Good Bye Doctor’ as a child artiste. Later, she performed on stage and made her film debut with Mahesh Manjrekar’s Hindi film ‘Pran Jaye Par Vachan na Jaye’. Recently, we saw her playing an important role of a lady Sarpanch, in national award winning film ‘Deool’. With her acting skills and perfect body language, Atisha did invite attention of the audience.

At present, Atisha is also performing in one more Marathi play ‘Suryachi Pilley’; but her role as a cunning Mother in law in Marathi TV serial ‘Pudhcha Paul’, has exploited her potential. Now, instead of being typecast, Atisha is playing an important role in Amol Palekar’s forthcoming humour filled film, ‘We are on, Aata Houn Jaoo De.’ Atisha refuses to speak much about her role and film’s theme, as she wants to maintain the secrecy about it. “But, it’s a kind of role, that I really enjoyed playing,” she said.

For Supriya Pathare, it has been a struggle to reach the position, she has attained now. Sixteen years ago, she used to perform dramas on stage along with her group, during the Ganapati festivals in Mumbai, till she joined Vaman Kendre’s group and performed in ‘Teen Paishacha tamasha’. Born and brought up in Mumbai, she then lived in Dongri area of Mumbai. Those days, she even joined dance classes, to enable her to present her part well. ‘Darling Darling’ was her first commercial play. Being the sister of Ms. Anjali Nevrekar, of Sanskruti Kaladarpan Group, enabled her to begin her acting career professionally.

Her debut TV serial was ‘Kulvadhu’ in which she played a negative role of a selfish step mother, followed by negative roles in serials like ‘Mann Udhaan Varyache’ & ‘Pinjara’. These performances brought her into limelight; but, it was her performance in Zee Marathi’s reality show ‘Fu Bai Fu’ brought her name and fame. No wonder, she was offered a cameo in recently released film ‘No Entry Pudhe dhoka aahe’.

“On many occasions in the past chapters of ‘Fu Bai Fu’’ I was rejected. They really had a doubt, whether an actress like me, who was typecast in negative roles, would be able to deliver comedy scenes? But, when finally I got a chance, I proved that I could create laughter. Whatever recognition I have received today, is all because of ‘Fu Bai Fu’.” she concluded.

Deool’ launched in a style.

I would love to play Big B’s mother – Usha Nadkarni

Usha Nadkarni

Over the years, Usha Nadkarni, the most popular character artiste from Marathi and Hindi film industry has played the mother of many popular artistes. But, when asked, as to who was her best beta or beti; she refuses to comment. “I don’t believe in such relations. One should be sincere while performing that act.” She says. But, when you ask her as to whose mother she would love to play, she sportingly admits one and only Big ‘B’- Amitabh Bachchan’s name.

Usha Nadkarni
Yes, it will be a great honour for an actress of her caliber to play the Mom of Big B. Even actress Vidya Balan had the privilege of doing so in the film ‘Paa’. In the past even an actress like Rohini Hattangadi with tremendous potential, played his mother in the film ‘Agnipath’. So, Usha has all the hopes in days to come. A versatile actress, she has been in the field of acting for almost 38 years now. She began her career with marathi stage and entered at the competitive level with INT’s play ‘Guru’. Thereafter, she performed with Nana Patelar in famous play ‘Purush’ and later played character roles in marathi and Hindi films. Some of her popular films were ‘Vaastav’, ‘Hathyar’, ‘Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar’, ‘Tu Chor Main Sipahee’, ‘Yashwant’, ‘Gundaraj’, ‘Lakshmanrekha’ and N. Chandra’s ‘Narsimha’, where she played an important role of Narsimha’s mother.

Usha Nadkarni actually shot into fame after she played two important roles in Hindi TV serials; namely Shantabai in ‘Kuch Iss Tarah’ and as Savita Damodar Deshmukh in ongoing ‘Pavitra Rishta’. It was a pleasure talking to this straight-thinking woman, who spoke very frankly about what she feels about this entertainment industry. Incidentally, she is playing the title role in forthcoming marathi film ‘What an Idea Mai!’, as the movie revolves around her. But, when you ask her as to whether this movie would change her image, she tries to divert your attention to her another film ‘Deool’ where she also plays an equally important role. ‘Deool’ is is also my forthcoming film and it’s a masterpiece and a timely film,” she adds .

Talking about her slow but steady progress into this acting field, she recalls her younger days, when she performed on stage. “After I performed in plays like ‘Guru’ for INT and ‘Purush’ in the company of Nana Patekar, I gained a lot of confidence as an actress. But, I didn’t believe in begging for the roles. I have never gone to any producer and asked for a favor. Whatever was there for me, always came to me. Even while on the sets, I paid attention on my work, rather than my make up and costumes. If I was required to play a middle class woman from a chawl, I paid less attention on on my make and tried to present myself in natural form. After all, acting makes all the difference,” she adds.

Over the years Usha has played safe game by not leaving her job for full time acting. “I worked with BMC for few years and then with Dena Bank for over 20 years, till I took voluntary retirement few years ago,” she says. “Those days it was a risk leaving your job and even after taking Voluntary retirement, I had gone back to my employers to take my option back; but they didn’t allow it. Now, I am happy that I am getting good offers and people are appreciating my performance,” she concludes.
