After television Gayatri Datar to experience theatre

Gayatri Datar who made her dream come true by performing with actor Subodh Bhave in popular TV serial ‘Tula Pahate Re’, will now experience Marathi theatre, by performing in Children’s play ‘Nimma Shimma Rakshas’ to be directed by Chinmay Mandlekar. It may be recalled that Gayatri who played the lead role of Isha in ‘Tula Pahate re’ was a child, when she received a prize at the hands of actor Subodh Bhave some years ago. And at that time, she had expressed her desire that one day she would act with him. Now that this serial has come to an end, Isha has a lot of time to devote herself for this Marathi play and she is expected to attract the little ones for her play. Isha who has also experienced big screen, having performed in Ajinkya Lokhande’s Marathi short film ‘Intolerence’ is also excited to perform on stage, which she feels is also an important medium of entertainment.

Subodh Bhave to begin 2019 with ‘Kahi Kshan Premache’

Last year, after appearing in five films namely, Shubh Lagna Savadhan’, ’Majha Agadbam’, Pushpak Vimaan’, ’Savita Damodar Paranjape’ & ‘Aani Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar’, popular Marathi actor Subodh Bhave was seen in ongoing Marathi serial ‘Tula Pahate Re’ in the role of Vikram Saranjame. Subodh did receive good response from home viewers, but due to sudden shift towards negativity noticed in his character, many of his admirers openly criticized him stating that he does not suit in that negative type of role.

‘Ani .. Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar’ stands tall in competition with other films

Ani .. Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar Movie
Actor Subodh Bhave, Marathi movie ‘Ani .. Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar ‘

Gone are the days when Marathi films celebrated Silver Jubilee at popular Single screen theatres like Plaza, Bharatmata ( Mumbai) & Prabhat, BhanuVilas( Pune). Now, with the spread of Multiplex network, Marathi films are really finding it difficult to find screens. However, 9 years ago, when there was strike of Hindi film distributors, Marathi film like ‘Mee Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy‘ did a very good business, with availability of screens even at multiplexes.

Two years ago, when Marathi film ‘Sairat‘ was released, it did very good business, with housefull shows. The popularity of this film spread so fast that more and more multiplexes started offering their screens for this film. And this gave a big scare to Hindi film makers. In fact, Bollywood film maker Rohit Shetty did admit during a function of Marathi film that he went to see Film ‘Sairat‘ to see what was so special about this film.

Now, with the release of ‘Ani .. Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar‘ we once again noticed full house shows during the first week and with the ‘word of mouth’ publicity, the film attracted good response wherever it was released. Watching the response to this film, the theatre owners offered more shows to this film at multiplexes. Bollywood film ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ with big names lost its business in competition with this film especially in Mumbai and Pune. Best example is of City Pride Radhakrishna theatre at Ratnagiri. In this cinema theatre ‘Thugs of Hindostan‘ was released with three shows with only one show @ 12 noon for ‘Ani .. Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar‘. But, in just for days, i.e. on Tuesday ‘Ani .. Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar‘ was allotted 3 shows of prime time with only one show @12 noon for the Hindi film. Isn’t this a big victory for Marathi films in Maharashtra? In short, ‘Ani .. Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar‘ stood tall in competition with other films this Diwali.

  • Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke.

Finally, the much awaited biopic on Marathi theatre’s so called first and last Superstar Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar has been released on the auspicious day of Diwali. And, the film has received an overwhelming response, with a full house shows at almost all the theatres on the first day. Thanks to versatile actor Subodh Bhave, who has put his heart& soul, while portraying the central character of Late Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar.

Written and directed by Abhijeet Shirish Deshpande , the film has very skillfully presented this biopic paying more attention on the real happenings in the life of the Superstar . What makes this film stand apart from the other biopics on legends is that, it has paid more attention not only on the personality traits of the central character, but also his weaknesses, which saw his downfall and end, due to his involvement in excessive smoking, drinking, besides his Extramarital affairs . And, this gives a very realistic look to this biopic. At the end of the film, the audience leave the cinema halls praising lead actor Subodh Bhave for paying sincere tributes to Late Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar.

The rivalry between Dr.  Kashinath Ghanekar  and Dr. Shreeram Lagoo has been clearly shown through many scenes, when they come face to face on few occasions. Sumeet Raghavan who has portrayed the role of Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, has also done justice to his role. However, Prasad Oak, who plays the role of Late Prabhakar Panshikar who always stood by his friend, has proved that he has the potential to play such challenging roles. Nandita Dhuri who plays his first wife Dr. Irawati , Sonali Kulkarni who plays Sulochana Didi, Mohan Joshi in the role of Bhalji Pendharkar and Anand Ingale who plays the role of playwright Vasant Kanetkar have also proved their mettle in many conflicting scenes with Subodh . But, young Vaidehi Parshurami steals the show, while portraying an equally important character of Kanchan, whom Dr. Kashinath married later.

The director has shown his creativity in the screenplay through many important scenes. The film exposes many hidden facts from the Marathi stage especially during 60s and 70s. While showing the rise of Dr. Kashinath’s rival Dr. Shreeram Lagoo with a picturisation of a song on Sumeet Raghavan & Amruta Khanvilkar from his old hit film ‘Pinjra’, he has simultaneously shown the ex marital affair of Dr. Kashinath with young Kanchan who is not only his great fan but madly in love with him. Dr. Kashinath’s interaction with Sulochanadidi after the later comes to know about her daughter’s affair with him and also his father (played by Pradeep Velankar) and finally the climax scene, display the real emotions of the respective characters.

The other plus points of this film are perfect make up by Vikram Gaikwad, well written dialogues by director along with Guru Thakur, suitable costumes by Nachiket Barve, superb cinematography by Sudhir Palsane and wonderful art direction by Santosh Phutane. Certainly a worth watch film. Don’t miss it.

Is Subodh Bhave No.1 actor of Marathi films today ?

Actor Subodh Bhave Image
Actor Subodh Bhave

With more than 50 films and 27 TV serials to his credit, Subodh Bhave is certainly an actor to reckon, when it comes to popularity. He has been active with the Marathi film industry since 2005. And he is still going on adding more films to his account that too in lead roles. With ongoing serial ‘Tula Pahate Re‘ and upcoming biopic ‘Ani Kashinath Ghanekar‘ Subodh is certainly at popularity heights. At the age of 40, this is certainly creditable. Why can’t we call him No. 1 actor of Marathi films today?

Having successfully performed in biopics like ‘Lokmanya‘ and ‘Balgandharva‘, he had become the first choice of film makers opting for Biopics. No wonder, he was selected to play the title role in ‘Aani Kashinath Ghanekar‘. An actor with stage background Subodh has really worked hard to move to this top position. An actor par excellence, he has played variety of roles in different films. Best thing about him is that he has not been part of any controversy. A polished actor that he is, Subodh Bhave has also maintained good relationship with others, being a soft spoken gentleman.
