For the past few years, we have been watching revival of old Marathi plays. Three years ago stage actor Kishore Sawant had also attempted this experiment by reviving old hit Marathi play ‘Wahato Hi Durvanchi Judi‘ , which was directed by Vilas Gurjar. Kishore staged this play under his Kishore Theatres . Having performed on stage since 1980, Kishore become busy thereafter with his job in a financial institution. In 1997, he had made his debut in commercial theatre performing an important role in the same play.

So far, 60 shows of this play were staged and during the 50th Golden jubilee show, he had invited popular personality of Marathi stage Mr. Gangaram Gavankar as a chief guest. And the show was a tribute to writer Late Bal Kolhatkar. The direction of this revived play is handled by Vijay Gokhale.

In the meanwhile, Kishore Sawant along with his stage actor friend from Kuwait Vivek Naik has launched another stage production ‘KIVI ‘ Productions, which will soon stage another hit revived play ‘Apradh Mich Kela‘ with versatile actor Ramesh Bhatkar in the lead. Along with Ramesh Bhatkar, the other artistes of this play are, Vijay Gokhale, Vighnesh Joshi, Yash Joshi and himself. ‘Dum Asel Tar’ has a social message

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

One does not know, whether it was the right time for Producer Sagar Sankude and director Vijay Gokhale to release their film ‘Dum Asel Tar’? They preferred the release time, during the most popular Ganapati festival in Maharashtra. The film has been released simultaneously with two other Hindi films with popular banners. Moreover, this Marathi film’s press show wasn’t held on Wednesday, as per the practice followed by other Marathi films.

‘Dum Asel Tar’, however has a good social message to convey through the script penned by Advait Dadarkar , with the hero Shankar ( Shankar Shingare) after realizing the crime committed by him in a hit and run case, killing a young boy; tries to help the family of the victim living in the slums. But, when the mother and sister Lata (Smita Shwale) of the victim, refuse to accept the help from him, being a politician’s son; he tries to create development in the slums, with the help of a schoolmaster Anna (Vijay Gokhale) from their area.

Shankar’s girlfriend Sonal (Manva Naik) who accompanies him during the accident in a drunken state after a pub party, is opposed to his plans. Moreover, Anantrao (Anant Jog) who is a close friend turned relative of Shankar’s father( Mohan Joshi) tries to blackmail him, having saved Shankar from the accident case. He plays his political game and also pressurizes Shankar’s father by harassing his newly wed daughter in law, who is Shankar’s sister.

Manwa Naik,Actress
How Shankar faces the opposition from local goons in slums, in his mission to uplift the society and winning the confidence of Lata, is all that the film’s screenplay goes on to show. Finally, Shankar is forced to form a Political party with the support of youngsters, the schoolteacher and Jaggu dada, to fight a tough politician like Anantrao. The screenplay is fine; but the insertion of ‘dahi handi’ song hasn’t been timed well. But, music by ‘Say band’ and Laxman Patil sounds good. So are the meaningful lyrics. The cinematography by Samir Athlye is remarkable. He has shot the outdoor as well as close up scenes very well. Imran and Faisal Mahadik have done their editing job well.

Both Smita Shewale and Manva Naik have performed very well, understanding the limitations of their roles. The performances from all supporting artistes are impressive. Anant Jog and Mohan Joshi in particular, play their respective roles with authority. Shubhangi Latkar (as Shankar’s mother) finds enough scope to express her emotions in the concluding part. Uday Tikekar as Jaggu dada, Vijay Gokale as School master , Ravi Patwardhan as senior citizen, Vighnesh Joshi as TV Journalist, Ashutosh Gokhale in a supporting role and others have played their roles effectively, to give a realistic look to the film. Guest actor Bharat Jadhav adds extra flavor in the concluding part, as a committed news editor of a news channel.

However, in comparison to all these versatile artistes around, the hero of this film Shankar hasn’t been much impressive especially with his dialogue delivery in Marathi. He should have worked hard on this aspect, being a Maharashtrian himself. Simply possessing a good personality does not necessarily work in a Marathi film, which has ample talent around. He has to work hard over his Marathi, if he has to continue in Marathi films.

Shankar

Moreover, the character of the hero in this film, shown as US returned young boy, does not indicate the same through his accent, which doesn’t sound like a NRI. The director seems to have paid less attention on this aspect. When the marathi audience couldn’t approve the Marathi school teacher presented by Jackie Shroff in a recently released marathi film ‘Hridaynath’, how would they react to Shankar in this film, remains to be seen . His marathi diction is the only drawback of this film, which is otherwise a sincere effort to present a social issue based theme, something new attempted in Marathi films.

“I am grateful to my friends” – Bharath Jadhav

Kranti Redkar Bharat Jadhav

Bharat Jadhav’s own production company ‘Aarambh Imagines’ has launched its first production ‘One Two ka Four’ on Mi Marathi channel last month, but, its official launching for the press was delayed, due to non availability of Marathi superstar. Incidentally, he was also busy with the revival of ‘Sahi Re Sahi’ his super hit comedy play.

On Saturday 21st August, Bharat had invited the press at Hotel Rangsharada, Mumbai, to brief them about his entry with home production. Naming his wife Sarita as the Producer, Bharat said that he launched this company using his son’s name Aarambh. “For a long time, I was very keen to start my Home production and with this comedy serial ‘One Two ka Four’, I found the right platform at Mi Marathi. I am thankful to them for giving me this opportunity but at the same time I am also thankful to my dear friends like Avadhoot Gupte, who has composed the music of this serial’s
Kranti Redkar, Bharat Jadhav, One two ka four
title track, Sanjay Jadhav, who has shot this music video, Jitendra Joshi, who has penned the lyrics and Umesh Jadhav, who has choreographed it. All these people haven’t charged a single paisa from me. And, above all, how can I forget my co-artistes? They just agreed to play the roles in this serial, without asking how much they would be paid . But, I am not going to let them down. They will all be paid soon,” said Bharat, while delivering his speech.
Speaking on the occasion, Kranti Redkar (his co-star), Director Dnyanesh Bhalekar ( Comedy Express fame), Actors- Sanjay Khapre, Vijay Gokhale, Kamlakar Satpute & Jairaj Nair, were all praise for Bharat for having got an opportunity to work with him. They also praised his good nature and his simplicity, even after becoming a big star. Kedar Shinde, the director of ‘Sahi Re Sahi’ and a good friend of Bharat also spoke on the occasion. Actor Ankush Choudhary, who is also a good friend of Bharat was also present for the function. Bharat’s family comprising of his wife-Sarita, son-Aarambh and daughter-Surabhi however preferred to sit quietly in one corner of the hall. It was only Kranti Redkar, who joined them after the interaction with press was over.

When MMW spoke to Aarambh, to know what he had imagined about this production, ( since his name was given to it) the 4th standard kid was taken by surprise and just preferred to smile. Kranti Redkar, while speaking about her forthcoming films, said that her ‘Laadi Laadli’ was due for release around Ganapati festival time. Neelam Shirke was conspicuously absent and the host announced that she was busy elsewhere and couldn’t make it for the function. The happiest person on the occasion was Vijay Gokhale, who plays Bharat’s boss in the office in this serial. He played a perfect host on Bharat’s behalf, on this occasion.

‘One two ka Four’ which is a total comedy in a typical Bharat style, is being shown on ‘Mi Marathi channel’ every Monday and Tuesday at 10 pm.
