Have you imagined Sayaji Shinde playing lead opposite Varsha Usgaonkar ? Well, this has happened 25 years ago on 3rd November 1995. And the film was ‘Aboli’ directed by Amol Shetge. The film was produced by Amol Shetge and Nishikant Sadafule. Story , screenplay and dialogues were by Amol himself and Nishikant Sadafule had composed the music. Sayaji Shinde had played lead role in this film opposite Varsha Usgaonkar and in the photo you will notice both of them in a romantic mood.

Sayaji Shinde, Varsha Usgaonkar, ‘Aboli’ Marathi Movie

Besides Sayaji and Varsha the film also had Renuka Shahane, Vijay Gokhale, Deepak Shirke, Shraddha and Guddi in lead roles. Other highlights of this film were that the informative booklet released during the film’s release was unique and popular singers of that period Asha Bhosale, Ravindra Sathe and Vinay Mandke had rendered their voices for the songs, which had become very popular. To celebrate 25 years of this film, it is expected that the channels showing Marathi films should have a show of this film.

We have heard about the progress of Marathi films going global, with their unique subjects, through international film festivals. Now days, even some of the Marathi film award functions are held abroad. So, there isn’t big surprise, if any Marathi film is shot on a big cruise, offering something new to the audience. In the recent past, we have seen some Marathi films shot in Mauritius, Bangkok and so on. Latest released Marathi film ‘One Way Ticket‘ produced by Komal Unawane, presented by Video Palace and directed by Kamal Nathani & Amol Shetge has exactly tried this experiment, covering some parts of Europe on a cruise.

Actress Amruta Khanvilkar in Marathi movie ‘One Way Ticket’

So, the film begins with a smart young man Samar Raj( Sachit Patil) who introduces himself as photographer, narrating the tale of Aniket to the audience, with the help of his charming young assistant Urvashi( Neha Mahajan) . Then, we actually see Aniket ( Shashank Ketkar) from Chinchwad, Pune, pleading before his mother to fulfil his desire of proceeding to Genoa , Italy on a job assignment and asking for Rs. 5 Lakhs, to transfer the same to a recruiting agency. Mother( Asha Shelar) sells her ornaments and land to raise the amount to help accomplish her beloved son’s dream. Aniket does land in Italy, but comes to know that he has been cheated. With no money with him, the writer of this film, shows him the way. Aniket travels back on the passport in the name of Aditya Rane( Gashmeer Mahajani) and also his money presuming that he is dead.

On the cruise, he comes across Shivani ( Amruta Khanvilkar) who is in search of her boyfriend Aditya Rane. On the same cruise, he meets Samar Raj and Urvashi. Soon, the news of Aditya Rane’s identity as a gangster and his death is released on television news and dejected Shivani later finds a good friend in Aniket. At the stroke of interval, one more elderly person identifying himself as D’costa joins the group and the film’s story takes a turn. But, the writer director could not carry the story further, as skilfully as they did in the pre interval session and wind up the plot hurriedly in a predictable manner.

‘One Way Ticket’ thus fails to deliver in the post interval session, what it promised in the first half. And therefore, this less than two hour long film fails to capture the audience in the later half . The film however scores on account of its good cinematography Rupang Acharya, who has captured the limited exposure of Europe skilfully, including the scenes on the deck of the huge ship. Background music of Troy Arif is also appealing, especially in the first half. The music is just fine. There are also some flaws noticed in the film. But, the performances of all the artistes are really good.

Those who haven’t tried a voyage on a big ship, may feel, as if they are also taken for a ride along with the young team of this film. Some of the scenes in few cities of Europe have also been captured well, with limited scope. But, there is something missing in this film, which the shrewd audience notice, as the film comes to an end. Film’s promo was very appealing. But then, All that glitters, is not Gold. The film has turned out to be just a casual pass time for a change.

Announcement of the name of Rajashree Landge was a big surprise, as there was strong rumour that Aditi Sarangdhar would play this role. But, Rajashree’s selection has now been confirmed. Her co star in this film in the role of Professor will be Subodh Bhave.

‘Tee Phulrani‘ will be directed by experienced film director Amol Shetge. Recently, a new trend has set in to convert some of the popular Marathi plays into films and the best examples were films like ‘Katyar kaljaat Ghusli‘ and ‘Natsamrat‘. Now, it remains to be seen, how Amol Shetge would succeed in presenting this cinematic version. Luckily, he has a talented actor Subodh Bhave with him; but, all eyes will be on Rajshree Landge .

Komal Ramakant Unawane is a software engineer. But, her passion for films and events made her move towards this tinsel world. Last year, through her own brand ‘Mekbrand’, she co -sponsored Manali Jagtap’s fashion show, in aid of Umeed a charity organization. She also turned a co-producer when in September 2015 Marathi film ‘One Way Ticket‘ was launched in a big way. This film was earlier to be produced and directed by Bollywood film maker Kamal Nathani. But, now we find that Komal Unawane is the producer of ‘One Way Ticket‘ and the film is directed by veteran Amol Shetge.

Komal was well dressed up for the occasion, like a celebrity, during the first look launch of this film on Wednesday evening. She was first introduced to media persons, as the young producer of the film, by co producer Suresh Pai and director Amol Shetge. The film stars Sachit Patil, Gashmeer Mahajani, Amruta Khanvilkar, Sashank Ketkar & Neha Mahajan. While speaking about her entry into this field, Komal said that she always wanted to do something in this film industry. And, when she discussed about it, with her family members, she received support from them. “I had already travelled on cruise to Europe and hence, when I saw the script of this film, I was highly impressed and agreed to be the producer. It was a good team work and I am sure, Marathi film lovers are going to enjoy this film” she concluded. The film will be released all over Maharashtra on 10th June 2016.

After a long time, there is a Marathi film, which has a good narrative story, filled with suspense. ‘Sou Shashi Deodhar’ is actually a mystery filled film, which is well presented by director Amol Shetge, who has himself written the story of this film. You may also call it a psychological thriller, which revolves around a middle class young married woman, who identifies herself as Ms.Shubhada Shashi Deodhar, after she recovers from a hit by the car driven by Dr. Ajinkya Vartak, during one rainy night.

Since it is a road accident, it involves police investigation and Dr.Ajinkya is held up in the hospital, till the young woman gives her statement to the police, after her recovery, admitting that it was her own fault, as she lost her balance. But, her real identity still remains a mystery; as Dr. Ajinkya, who has been asked by the police officer to drop her at the address given by her, turns out to be owned by somebody else. Even the description given by the lady about her husband, does not match with the person located. Finally, the police issue an advertisement in the newspaper, with her photo and till that time, the lady finds shelter at Dr. Ajainkya’s house. Being a bachelor and a psychiatrist, he not only takes good care of her; but, also does the job of police department, to locate Shashi Deodhar, with the help of a social networking site.

In the meanwhile, reading the advertisement, a young man Mr. Thakur( Aniket kelkar) with his one leg injured, walks into the police station, claiming the young lady as his wife- Nilima. But, the young lady refuses to identify him as her husband. So, the husband asks the police to take her to her father; who identifies her as his daughter. But, the lady claiming herself as Shubhada, is then brought in contact with Mr. Shashi Deodhar and his real wife Shubhada. Even after meeting them, the lady tells Dr. Ajinkya that she does not know them. Finally, Dr.Ajinkya, with her consent and taking the police officer into confidence, injects her with sodium pentothal drug, to make her confess the truth, in the concluding part of the film.

From start till the end, director Amol Shetge has cleverly kept the pace of the film, holding the grip on his story. Few scenes in the film look irrelevant. But, very cleverly, he has introduced new characters in the screenplay one by one, to keep the mystery. Even he has taken a break for interval, at the right time, in this little less than 2 hour length film. The concluding part unfolds the mystery in a very systematic manner, to make this film an absorbing fiction. suresh Deshmane’s cinematography is good. Music and background music is apt for this kind of mystery filled tale.

Sai Tamhankar, known for her glamorous roles, has found an opportunity to play a simple middle class married woman, suffering from a split personality disorder. She is highly impressive in a different role, through this film. In the role of Dr.Ajinkya Vartak, Ajinkya Deo has played his part very naturally. He seemed to be a perfect choice for this role. In the supporting cast, Aniket Kelkar, Avinash Kharshikar,Tushar Dalvi, Janardan Parab, producer Shilpa Shirodkar –Ranjit’s daughter Anushka, her husband Ranjit, director Amol Shetge himself and others have offered a good support. Tushar looks different in his new get up.

‘Sou Shashi Deodhar’ has certainly succeeded to bring in that desired change in Marathi films, with a new subject, which is socially so relevant. Thanks to Shilpa and her husband Ranjit for their debut offering. But, the kind of publicity done by the film, it failed to find the crowds at theatres on the first day. Growel- kandivali, witnessed just 10 people, for 1.10 pm show. Hope that the film picks up well, in next two days.

Film maker Kanchan Adhikari’s new Marathi film ‘Don Ghadicha Daav’ has been released at a time when Single screen theatres are on strike besides the World Cup cricket fever going on. This suspense filled film is certainly something new to Marathi cinema and had raised lot of hopes, but unfortunately, it has been inspired by Agatha Christie’s play and 1973 Bollywood film ‘Dhund’.

‘Don Ghadicha Daav’ is the story of a young woman – Vaidehi Sarpotdar (Sai Tamhankar), whose invalid husband – Arjun Sarpotdar (Sayaji Shinde) is murdered. A stranger, whose car breaks down near Sarpotdar’s bungalow walks in and identifies himself as Saumitra (Makarand Anaspure). He comes to the rescue of Vaidehi, who is confused in such a situation and then he draws a plan , taking advantage of the night hour with lightening and heavy rains outside.

The finger of suspicion obviously points at the young widow- Vaidehi, Arjun’s step mother (Kanchan Adhikari), Arjun’s mentally challenged step brother Babul for property reasons and a person called J. P. whose son has been crushed to death under Arjun’s car. There is also one more suspect in the form of family friend Dr. Umesh Sontakke (Ajinkya Dev) , who befriends Vaidehi. Everyone has a different version on how the actual murder took place and that makes Police to go into details of investigation. Finally, the real murderer comes forward with his revelations and surrenders before the police, when they are about to arrest someone else.

Though originally based on Agatha Christie’s play ‘The Unexpected Guest’, the film is almost a remake of B.R. Chopra’s suspense filled film ‘Dhund’ starring Sanjay Khan, Zeenat Aman, Danny Denzongpa, Deven Verma, Madan Puri & Navin Nischol; which was also based on this English play. In short , one can say that ‘Don Ghadicha Daav’ is a scene to scene copy of ‘Dhund’, barring few changes here and there to suit the requirements of some of the characters. How could someone else claim it as his own story? Above all, Director Amol Shetge who is also a screenplay writer besides director, has successfully presented the screenplay on the lines of ‘Dhund’.

Makarand Anaspure, who plays the character of a stranger-Saumitra has a different type of role to play in this film and he does justice to his character that was played by late Navin Nischol in the original version. Sai Tamhankar plays the character of helpless Vaidehi with few sparks. Her role cannot be compared with Zeenat Aman’s Rani, as Vaidehi has displayed the real pains of a girl in misery in her own way. Ajinkya Dev plays the role of Umesh Sontakke in his own style but on few occasions he forgets that he is a doctor. Take for example that scene with cigarette smoking in style. Perhaps, he was confused whether he was a doctor or an advocate, as in the original version his character is an advocate played by Sanjay Khan and that is the only change noticed. In the role of a Step mother, Kanchan Adhikari, who has made a comeback into acting after a gap of 23 years, certainly needed some more scenes and she has done justice to her role. Rest of the characters such as the lunatic step brother Babul and the servant Narsu are the same, as we witnessed in Dhund, except for the female maid.

To speak about the presentation part of the film, it has been presented well using latest technology of editing and sound effects to create that required ambience wherever called for. The locations are perfect but the background music turns loud on few occasions, as if it was a horror film. There is only one song in the film and that too an item number picturised on Dipshika and Sayaji Shinde, hence whatever scope the music director had was through background music only.

The film may invite the attention of collegians and fans of Agatha Christie stories, but it would certainly disappoint the real Marathi film lovers who are looking for original and sensational subjects. At a time when Marathi films are acclaimed at the national and international level, there were big expectations from this dynamic lady film maker, who gave us a sensible film like ‘Manini’; but, this time she preferred to go the Bollywood way.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said: “Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.” Based on the ideology behind such thoughtful utterances, Ramesh Deo Productions and Lokmat Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., have come up with a strong answer to an existing situation in the society, where justice is denied to a father, who is the only witness to his daughter’s murder. “If the hands of Law were strong enough, no one would dare to commit a crime, says Prof. Yashwant Rajadhyaksha, (played by Veteran actor Ramesh Deo) a retired professor of law, in the concluding part of the film. ‘Jeta’ has such a strong subject that is pushed with equally interesting screenplay supported by sensible dialogues to create awareness in the society. In short, it is a message to law makers.
The film opens up with an old couple Mr. & Ms. Rajadhyaksha (Ramesh Deo and Seema) remembering their daughter Shweta (Manava Naik) , who is murdered by three youngsters of influential parents. Very cleverly the director has used the lyrics of the song ‘Ya Sukhano Ya..’ reminding both about their longtime association. Shweta, who is making a documentary film on a village –Kalambi, (as part of her project in college)which is being redeveloped in the name of SEZ, by exploiting the rural poor. She gets a strong support from a protagonist Prabhakar Pannicker (Sharad Ponkshe) a leftist, and other villagers. The three youngsters later murder Shweta while attempting to collect the evidence against them and that too in the presence of her father, who puts up a brave fight.
The case is heard in the court of law and the three criminals get away with the crime, for want of sufficient evidence. Helpless Professor is then encouraged by his wife to take revenge and the professor takes his revenge in his own style, by killing two out of three killers using his well planned methodology. An ACP Vikrant Marathe( Ajinkya Deo) steps in to investigate the murders. This is where the screenplay takes a new twist. Prof. Rajadyaksha does succeed in his mission for the third time, but he gets the timely support from another person. And, this time, his beloved wife is present to watch that scene. The next day, the couple take leisurely walk at the sea shore, having completed their mission successfully. But, this time, the professor has a message, “Come forward and fight injustice, be a ‘Jeta’, yourself. Have courage to fight your own battle.”
The film has the touches of popular Bollywood film ‘Andhaa kanoon’ and recently released Marathi film ‘Second Inning’. However, looking at the efforts put in by director duo- Ajinkya Deo and Amol Shetge, it is certainly a good presentation to create that desired impact on the audience. Screenplay and dialogues match well with the main theme, which is ‘revenge’. Every important scene is well supported by suitable sound effects and background music. Lyrics by Vaibhav Joshi and music by Vaishali Samant also go well with the screenplay. Both have also tried a song on RD style in a Disco with the help of suitable light effects. Editing by Sarvesh Parab is satisfactory, as you don’t feel bored anytime during the film. Photography by Dhananjay Kulkarni is also impressive.

It was nice to watch the veteran couple together after a long time. And, both Ramesh Deo and Seema have performed well. Seema in particular was at her best in that sequence where she encounters ACP with battle of words. Even the interaction between Sharad Ponkshe and Ajinkya Deo during investigation process, extracts the best from these two talented artistes. Manava naik and other artistes in the film support well.
The film has successfully managed to present a theme, which is so relevant in today’s time, when some of the dreaded criminals are making a mockery of our system, finding the loopholes. Is it a right thing to kill such dreaded criminals in a fake encounter? And, the film has the answer. Hopefully, such a film with a sensational theme should receive a good response from Marathi film lovers.
