Renowned stage, television and film actor Sachin Khedekar will be returning to Marathi stage after almost 21 years. Jigisha and Ashtavinayak production companies known for their best Marathi plays ‘Get Well Soon’,’ Hamlet’,’ Hasava Fasavi’,’ Vada Chirebandi’ Char Chaughi’,’ Ajjibai Joraat’ and others; will be producing their next play ‘Bhumika’ with Sachin Khedekar in lead role.

Presented by Chandrakant Kulkarni, this play will witness comeback of Sachin Khedekar on Marathi stage after a log gap and therefore his admirers and well wishers are excited to see him perform on stage. Kshitij Patwardhan has written this play ‘Bhumika’, which is directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni. However, the other artistes of this play are not yet disclosed. Also, the kind of role Sachin will be portraying in this play is also kept in abeyance.

Marathi Drama producers have always been experimenting new things, when it comes to staging the shows of their plays. We have seen a particular drama staging three shows a day at different places. We have also seen some drama producers staging their shows during early hours of morning on the first day of Diwali. But now, Marathi drama lovers will witness three shows of three different drama one after the other in the same auditorium on 1^st October 2017. Initially, the first two plays mentioned above were staged separately , which received good response. Now, while launching the third play ‘Yugant‘, the makers thought of staging all the three plays together, one after the other. So, it will be a triple dhamaka offer for Drama lovers.

The names of these three plays are, ‘Wada Chirebandi‘, ‘Magna Talyakathi‘ & ‘Yugant‘ . Incidentally, all these three plays are written by Mahesh Elkunchwar and directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni. This is the first time such an experiment is done while staging these Marathi plays together and it remains to be seen , how the Marathi drama lovers would welcome this idea. But, the producers have decided to stage only 11 such shows together at different places in Maharashtra on a Sunday. And, it will be a nine hours treat in the same auditorium. The artistes performing in these plays are, Nivedita Saraf, Bharti Patil, Vaibhav Mangle, Prasad Oak, Pournima Manohar, Pratima Joshi, Neha Joshi, Ajinkya Nanavare, Deepak Kadam, Vinita Shinde, Chinmay Mandlekar, Siddharth Chandekar, Poorva Pawar, Ram Dound and Child artiste Swanand Shelke. Music by Anand Modak & Rahul Ranade , Light effects by Ravi Rasik & production design by Pradeep Mulye are the other credits.

Lifestyle ailments are on the rise in India and diabetes is one of them. This so called lifestyle ailment is on the rise day by day with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with this disease in our country. No wonder, some people call India as the diabetes capital of the world. Perhaps, looking at these figures, writer Vidyasagar Adhyapak thought of a good script for a Marathi drama and that’s how new Marathi play ‘Sakhar Khallela Manus‘ came on the stage. Even otherwise, our Marathi playwrights have always come up with ‘out of the world’ subjects in the past and this timely this play, is one of them.

‘Sakhar Khallela Manus’ presents Vilas Deshpande ( Prashant Damle ) as an Insurance Company Manager, who leaves his secured insurance company job and joins a private insurance company, only for good money. But, in the race of achieving monthly targets, he is always under stress and takes to heavy drinking and smoking during weekly parties. This results in detection of type 2 diabetes, with rise in sugar level in the blood. His wife Madhavi (Shubhangi Gokhale) becomes more stricter about his diet. His only daughter Rucha ( Rucha Apte) asks her boyfriend Omkar ( Sankarshan Karhade) who is a doctor, to visit her house and do the counseling part. But, some misunderstandings disturb Mr. Vilas more.
How, Mr. Vilas manages his diabetes and the fun filled interactions between Vilas and Madhavi, similarly between Vilas – Omkar and Vilas- Rucha have been skillfully presented by director Chandrakant Kulkarni. He has exploited the best out of the lead pair Prashant Damle and Shubhangi Gokhale through all those humour filled situations, throughout the play.

Good support also comes from youngsters Sankarshan Karhade and Rucha Apte . However, it is Prashant Damle who steals the show, with his non stop comedy. His presence in the play from start to finish, has made this play more lively and entertaining. All his scenes with Shubhangi Gokhale receive good appreciation from the audience. Prashant not only receives a rousing welcome from his fans at his entry, but also receives ‘Once More’ applaud for his song in the last scene, which indicates his popularity, as a stage actor.

Pradeep Mulye‘s set design is good with good support coming from music director Ashok Patki. All in all, ‘Sakhar Khallela Manus‘ is a wonderful black sugar coated adult comedy, which should not be missed by Marathi drama lovers.

Every actor or actress desire to perform a lifetime role in their acting career, be it on stage, television or films. And, very few of them get an opportunity to do so, in their second innings. Actor Amitabh Bachchan did find such opportunities through films like Cheeni Kam, Black, Paa, Piku & Pink. In Marathi, Nana Patekar found it in ‘Natasamarat‘. But, all are not lucky, especially the female artistes. But, Ashwini Bhave has found one such role in latest released Marathi film ‘Dhyanimani‘. She is the backbone of this film.

The film ‘Dhyanimani‘ revolves around her central character of Shalini Pathak a 40+ wife of Sadanand Pathak ( Mahesh Manjrekar) based in Roha on an job assignment. A newly married young couple Aparna ( Mrunmayee Deshpande) & Sameer ( Abhijeet Khandkekar) arrive in their house on a short vacation, as Pathak couple is close to Sameer’s father, a retired and highly respected school teacher( Madhav Abhyankar) .

Sadanand & Shalini welcome the young couple but soon the young couple notice some mystery in the strange behaviour of the couple. At the stroke of interval, the young couple and audience receive the first jolt and in the second half it is the uncovering of the mystery. ‘Dhyanimani‘ is based on the Marathi play by Prashant Dalvi which was staged in 90s. The play was directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni , who has now directed this film with the same name. Through this film, he has managed to present this mystery based screenplay of Prashant Dalvi well and has also skilfully exploited the best out of all four lead artistes well, but, he hasn’t taken much cinematic liberties through this film. Therefore, in many scenes the film has the look of a stage play, with more emphasis on long dialogues, especially those uttered by Ashwini Bhave.

Nevertheless, Ajith Reddy’s camera work, Paresh Manjrekar’s editing, Ajit Parab’s background music and Sandeep Mochemadkar’s sound design are plus points of this film. All in all,’Dhyanimani‘ film is not entertaining like typical Marathi films; but, does offer something different for those, who love to watch mystery based subjects with good performances.

Very often we have seen Marathi film makers influenced by the scripts of popular Marathi dramas. Latest released Marathi film ‘Family Katta‘ is no exception. The film is based on Prashant Dalvi written and Chandrakant Kulkarni directed Marathi play ‘Celebration‘ .With no changes in the script and retaining the same director, Vandana Gupte and her sister Rani Verma under the banner of their ‘Sister Concern Productions‘ have made this multi starrer film, which is an emotion filled family drama.

The film begins with an old couple Mr. & Ms. Sabnis (Dilip Prabhavalkar & Vandana Gupte) based in Pune, busy with preparations to celebrate their 50^th Wedding anniversary .This time, the third generation of Sabnis family comprising of Grand daughter ( Gauri Nalavade) a TV actress and her foreign based cousin ( Alok Rajwade) more keen on meeting their grandparents and celebrate the occasion. But for the two sons of Sabnis couple (Kiran Karmarkar & Sachin Deshpande) and their daughters in law ( Prateeksha Lonkar & Sulekha Talwalkar) it is just an occasion for a family get together. The third son of Sanis couple ( Sanjay Khapre) who is into social work and living in a village, is also on his way, to attend this function. The only daughter of Sabnis family ( Sai Tamhankar) , who marries against her father’s wish, an elderly person , after her divorce, is also on her way with her husband ( Adesh Shrivastav) to meet her parents after six years.

The film’s screenplay goes on well in the first half, with light humor arising out of the old couple’s arguments over small issues in their day to day life. But, little before the arrival of the family members, we notice a sudden twist in the screenplay. Thereafter, the film moves on with emotion filled happenings that follow in the second half, keeping the audience guessing, as to what would happen next. The film concludes well, with a timely social message.

‘Family Katta‘ is a well presented film, with wonderful performances coming from the entire team comprising of Dilip Prabhavalkar, Vandana Gupte, Kiran Karmarkar, Prateeksha Lonkar, Sachin Deshpande, Sulekha Talwalkar, Sanjay Khapre, Gauri Nalawade, Alok Rajwade, Sai Tamhankar & Adesh Shrivastav. They have shown perfect understanding and proper team work in every scene in this film. The jealousy between the two daughters in law, is cleverly shown through few humor filled scenes, while their young children are shown with a liberal attitude. Music isn’t much important in this film, except for background music. Good editing work by Jayant Jathar and finest cinematography by Mahesh Limaye, makes this film more appealing. Dialogues by Prashant Dalvi are also well written. But, the director hasn’t taken much cinematic liberties to present this original drama, perhaps cutting on the budget. But, his direction is good.

‘Family Katta‘ is the film for entire family and hence likely to be appreciated by all.
