The nominations for the 6^th Ambernath Marathi Film Festival 2020 have been announced and at the same time few declared awards have also been announced as decided by the Jury appointed by the hosts Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal and Amber Bharati.  47 films had participated in this film festival and 28 films have found place in the list of nominations in different categories.Prominent among them are films like ‘Pravaas’, ’Fanaral’,’Pritam’,’ Anya’,’ Kali Mati’,’Nibar’ and ’Email Female’.

Among the individual declared awards are best film ‘Kali Mati’,’ Best comedian Nikhil Ratnaparakhi, Best woman director Bhakti Jadhav( Email Female), Best Jury Award film ‘Shree Swami Samarth’, best actor declared Shantanu Moghe ( Shree Swami Samarth)& best actress declared Pari Jadhav ( Avartan). Three veteran personalities will be honoured with following awards: Mr. V.N.Mayekar for his technical expertise in editing and lifetime achievement for Mr. Shrikant Moghe and Jyoti Chandekar.

Actress Tejaswini Pandit and her actress mother Jyoti Chandekar  together have bagged the Zee gaurav awards, for best actress and best supporting actress respectively, for the same film ‘Ticha Umbartha‘, directed by Pradeep Ghonsikar. The film produced by veteran action director turned producer Ravi Dewan, had already bagged five nominations at this award function. And, they have won these two awards. However, in the film Jyoti Chandekar plays Tejaswini’s mother in law.

The film had already received good appreciation at recently concluded Pune International film festival and had won two awards at Sangli International .Film Festival. The film also stars Chinmay Mandlekar along with Suyash Tilak, Harsha Khandeparkar, Tulika Nikam, Bharat cinematography  by Yogesh Jani and music by Shreyas-Preet are the other credits of the film.

Many Marathi films are receiving good response at film festivals. In fact, it has become a trend to first do the rounds of numerous National and International film festivals, get recognition and then release the film commercially. While doing so, these film makers use the laurels and awards received, during the promotions of their film.

While still unreleased ‘Court‘ is busy with film festivals, one more Marathi film ‘Ticha Umbaratha’ is also doing the rounds, at film festivals. This film has been produced under the banner RDX Cinema by bollywood action director Ravi Dewan and directed by Pradeep Ghonsikar. It was honoured with Best Cinema Today award at PIFF (Pune International Film Festival) and has also won couple of awards, including the best actress award (Tejaswini Pandit) at Sangli International Film Festival. It has also bagged five nominations at one of the TV channels’ awards.

‘Ticha Umbaratha’ is about trials and tribulations of an urban middle class house-wife, who is forced to cross her limits at one point of time in life; and how she fights it without compromising on her values. The story is by Jayant Pawar and bollywood’s renowned cinematographer Yogesh Jani is behind the camera. The cast includes Chinmay Mandlekar, Tejaswini Pandit, Jyoti Chandekar, Suyash Tilak among others. As this film is busy with film festivals, the release date has still not been finalised.

Someone has rightly said, “Dreams are like stars…you may never touch them, but if you follow them they will lead you to your destiny.” In the case of Anant Deo , a young singer who comes from Sangli to this so called dream city Mumbai to become a singer, also has big dreams in his eyes and is very confident about his talent. But, what he experiences during his struggle period, makes him believe that money speaks. Soon, he realizes that Unless, you invest and market yourself, you cannot become a big singer.

Film maker Aditya Ingale’s film ‘Paulwaat’ presents this struggle in the life of a young talented singer Anant Deo, played by versatile actor Subodh Bhave. To give a cinematic look to this otherwise simple tale, the director prepares a ground with suitable characters and situations to fill with the music which is the USP of this sensible film. So, when Anant first arrives in Mumbai, his local friend Babya (Hrishikesh Joshi) finds a suitable quiet place for his PG accommodation in an old ancestral house owned by Godu akka (Jyoti Chandekar).

It takes no time for Revati,(Madhura Velankar- Satam) the niece of Mr. Nene(Anand Ingale) – living in the neighbourhood; to become friendly with Anant. An otherwise disturbed Goda akka, who initially tries to teach discipline to Anant, starts liking him later. Watching his struggle, she develops a kind of relationship almost on the lines of Lalita Pawar and Raj Kapoor in Bollywood film ‘Anari’. Watch her walking style and behaviour and you will notice the similarity.

During his struggle period, Anant meets few well wishers, who in appreciation of his talent, try to help him; but his bad luck prevents success coming closer to him. His older friend, philosopher and guide Usmanbahi ( Kishore Kadam) who has seen good time in the past, tries to explain to him as to how, to remain successful, the struggle must continue…” But, when Usmanbhai himself after facing humiliation, decides to leave for his native place selling his old house, Anant too loses hopes, though he continues doing petty jobs in music field, to earn for his living. Revati too suggests him to take up a proper job and then pursue his music side by side; but, Anant takes it the other way. One day, he takes a decision on his own hurting all those, who had come closer to him by that time. Destiny has something else in store for him. Finally, Anant swears that he would do something for all those talented strugglers who come to this city with the hope of becoming singers.

The film captures selfish human nature through certain characters in this materialistic world. Music, which is the USP of this film, finds suitable situations in the screenplay supported by humour filled dialogues to bring in that required change in this otherwise serious tale. Especially, the conversation between Goda Akka and Mr. Nene clearly shows how helpless they both are in their respective lives, yet don’t leave an opportunity to taunt each other. Anant’s outbursts at certain situations, shows the frustration of young people in this dream city. While the character of Revati suggests that a young girl looks for stability, when it’s time to settle down in life with a partner.

The film displays memorable performances from Subodh Bhave and Jyoti Chandekar. In fact, it is the interaction between these two characters, that suggests many things to sensible film lovers. Madhura Velankar- Satam plays happy go lucky but thoughtful Revati with her gifted talent . Anand Ingale plays the middle aged Sane confidently with variety, using a neck collar and suggestive body language to indicate his ageing process. But, it is Kishore Kadam in the role of Usmanbhai, invites all the attention with his perfect Urdu diction. Others in the supporting cast are just fine. Photography is good. Watch that last scene, perhaps shot at Banganga, Walkeshwar, with the light of the lamp reflecting through the water on the faces of the few characters seated on the stairway. Above all, music is just apt for this sensible film, which has about seven songs. “Paulwaat” is a real ‘state of the art’ kind of film. No wonder, it is produced by seven like minded people like Mukta Bhide, Manasi Pethe, Revati Gund, Alka Datar, Vyankatesh Mandke, Ajay Bhide, Anuradha Ekbote and Smita Bhagwatdar, all coming together to offer this sensible creation.

Producer Anuya Mhaiskar’s ‘Sukhaant” directed by veteran Sanjay Surkar discusses the serious topic of euthanasia i.e. mercy killing. The approval of the lawmakers has still not been received for mercy killing but this film poignantly supports the concept of mercy killing.

Pratap Gunje (Atul Kulkarni) is a lawyer from a well to do family living with his wife (Kavita Lad Medhekar) and son. In a freak accident Pratap’s mother Sitabai Gunje(Jyoti Chandekar) gets injured and her hands and legs are paralyzed . No hopes for revival makes Sitabai an angry and frustrated lady who
wants an easy death to relieve her of a life of a vegetable though her son and family take good care of her. But the old lady doesn’t wan t to burden herself on anyone and asks her lawyer son to file a petition for mercy killing, a plea which is refused by the courts. But Pratap can’t bear his mothers pain and kills her with great remorse and surrenders himself to the police.

The climax is very bold and the more conservatives like the doctor played by Tushar Dalvi feel that mercy killing is agreeable
to the heart and not the mind and that we shouldn’t play God and try to treat the patients as far as possible.

The film though a tad serious is made watchable by the lead performers especially Jyoti Chandekar and Atul Kulkarni who excel in the ‘breakdown’ scene in the climax. Both Kavita Lad Medhekar and Tushar Dalvi are impressive. The rest of the cast supports well.

The music by Ashok Patki offers few good tunes. The film has been written well by Kiran Yadnopavit. The DOP has done his job well and the lighting effect especially in the courtroom scenes and during the traffic sequence, where Atul gathers his thoughts is well captured. The sound provided in the background is amazing. Director Sanjay Surkar is a master at handling such subjects and does his job well. The producer Anuya Mhaiskar should be lauded for backing such a serious subject instead of opting for routine comedy or gross songs. In all, a thought provoking film, certainly a worth watch.

The film which has been creating waves at various film festivals in India and abroad, has been welcomed in Maharashtra on the first day of its release. Its universal theme is not only appealing but also touching the hearts of those who admire self-sacrificing service to the society.What more can one say about a film, which got standing ovation after its screening at the National theatre, London ? In fact, this film had a three show premiere at this festival recently. “Mee Sindutai Sapkal (मी सिंधुताई सपकाळ)” based on the autobiography of well-known social worker Sindhutai Sapkal, is a biopic directed by Anant Narayan Mahadevan, a Journalist turned Bollywoood actor and film maker.

The film’s story begins with present times, with Ms. Sindhutai Sapkal traveling for the first time by an airplane on her way to US on an invitation from a Maharashtra Sahitya Mandal based there. Sitting next to her as a co -passenger on the long journey is the director of the film. During the first half of the film, Ms. Sindhutai recollects her past with strange experiences with every small moment during the journey, while in the second half, she narrates her fight for survival, while addressing the elite audience in US.

 “Mee Sindhutai Sapkal” is a sensible film, strictly following the worst incidences in the life of the noble social worker and at the same time highlights her fight for survival. There is a lot to learn from this biopic, especially at a time when we all are living in a materialistic world. Here is an example of a woman, who has seen the worst poverty, yet feeds the other deserted children out of what she has gathered for her own child. It also reminds one and all about the sacrifice a mother has to make when she lifts the responsibility of all the deserted children around, as if they were her own children.

Very efficiently the director has captured every delicate moment in this film, that relates to the actual happenings in the life of the selfless social worker. The well structured Tejaswini Pandit, Sindhutai Sapkal dialogues strike timely in that well presented screenplay. Watch that mother and daughter relationship during the childhood of Sindhutai, when she is known as Chindhi . The father visiting his daughter’s place after her marriage and admitting the guilt of not offering her further education and the husband returning to Sindhutai, during old age, realising his mistake. They are all master pieces.

The film clearly hits out at the exploitation of women in the male dominant society, especially in the rural sector. “Education, is the key to progress,’ is all that the film goes on to say. No matter, you have limited education, but making an effort to see that other deserving get the same at the most appropriate time in their life, is the biggest need of the society. And, you need strong mothers like Sindhutai. Well suited music to every situation and good cinematography gives a more respectable look to the film.

It is for the first time that Mother and daughter combination of Jyoti Chandekar and Tejaswini Pandit have played the role of older and younger Sindhutai and it gave an impression that both of them had totally devoted themselves to this character. Upendra Limaye asyoung Sindhutai’s husband is very special and so is Suhas Palshikar, who plays her father. Neena Kulkarni in her small but effective role does a good job. Rest of the cast has supported well. The film will certainly take Marathi cinema to a greater heights.

‘Mee Sindhutai Sapkal’ a new Marathi film directed by Bollywood director Anant Mahadevan, has been selected for screening at the forthcoming London film Festival and the Asian Film Festival in US. Based on the autobiography of social worker Sindhutai Sapkal, titled ‘Mee Vanvasi’ the film is sure to invite the attention of foreign viewers.

‘Mee Sindhutai Sakpal’ which stars Tejaswini Pandit, Upendra Limaye and Neena Kulkarni, will be released all over Maharashtra, after its screening at these two festivals. Produced by Bindiya Khanolkar , the film has music by Ashok Patki.

Sindhutai Sapkal, well known social worker from Maharashtra has done a commendable job by offering shelter to hundreds of homeless children and providing them food twice a day. No wonder she has been conferred with 170 awards so far, for her selfless service to the society. Having herself experienced the worst treatment from husband and her society, for giving birth to a girl child, Sindhutai literally faced the circumstances with hard work. So impressed was Mr. Ananth Mahadevan, the Bollywood actor and director with her contribution to the society that he decided to make a marathi film on her life.

The time being right for the realistic marathi cinema, Mr. Mahadevan has already started his work on this ambitious project using Sindhutai’s own autobiography as the main source for his film’s script. The screenplay will present the happenings that have occurred in last 50 years of her life with more emphasis on stunning events like having to abandon the education on account of her marriage, warming herself near a burning funeral pyre while being frozen during a cold wave, and feeding herself on the holy rice kept near the dead body. In the later half, the story of her life soars to a commendable honour of being able to express herself from the dais of an international forum in America, which can also be seen in this film. Given the fact that the central theme of the film being so full of appeal, it is expected to appeal international audience.
