We are all aware that India is agriculture based country with around 60% of its population directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture, as their income. But, in India, Agriculture is often attributed as gambling with seasonal monsoon. The failure of seasonal monsoon, leads to a series of droughts. But, sometimes, un-seasonal monsoon showers, also creates havoc on crop with heavy loss, resulting in lack of better prices to farmers. But, mainly, it is the exploitation by the Middlemen, the main cause of a series of suicides committed by farmers across India.

It is said that on an average, one farmer commits suicide every 30 minutes in India. And, the state of Maharashtra is among the leading states reporting such tragedies. Latest released film ‘Pipani’ is all about this tragic situation in our country, which has been shot on the backdrop of a village in Vidarbha region in Maharashtra. Now, to highlight the situation, film maker Gajendra Ahire has used a plot, where a Hollywood film maker Freda Russel (Kristin Piesker) is shown making a feature film, to invite the attention of the world to this tragic state of farmers in this region and the reality behind it.

The film opens with a narrator Dnyaneshwar Tembhre (Chandrakant Kulkarni) a Circle officer of the Block, posted by the State Government. When he receives a request from his department to offer all the help to the visiting foreigner, he obliges by deputing Popat Jhadbuke (Makarand Anaspure) his most trusted man, to help the lady. Popat arranges her meetings with different people, beginning with Nanda (Hemangi Kavi), a widow, whose farmer husband has recently committed suicide.

Highly impressed with the location, when Freda returns with her unit team to shoot a film, her female character Kranti (an actress) seeks help from Nanda to be more realistic through her body language. The film also shows actor Ravi kale playing her husband and veteran actor Ramesh Deo playing her father in law. A Film which has been shot in this film, focuses more on the emotional part of the artistes and tries to show how the middlemen cheat the farmers from getting their dues. The scenes cover damage to crop due to un-seasonal rains and the helplessness of the farmers, forcing them to commit suicide.

But, what is more important is director Gajendra Ahire throwing light on other aspects; such as the effect of the happenings during the shooting, on the real life of the local villagers and how the middlemen in the film production department exploit the villagers. The director has tried to create humour through the character of Popat, who makes hard hitting statements in his typical style, blaming the administration for their apathy to uplift the lives of farmers with schemes and packages to boost their morale. There is one character who is shown as a helper to Popal (Vikas Samudre), who keeps on reminding him about the schemes.

Some form of humour is also created in one of the scenes, where Ravi kale, in an attempt to show his superiority to the actress kranti, tells her that he is a big actor, having worked with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, when the veteran actor Ramesh Deo playing his old father is shown reacting, “So what ? I have performed with Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan together.” There are many such humour filled sequences, which openly point out the neglect by the Government department, in finding the solution towards development of the Block. The transfer of the SDO to Pune, clearly goes on to say everything, after the shoot of the film is over.

The film conveys a strong message to the entire world about the ground level situation in this so called progressive nation. When Danny Boyle could make a film like ‘Slumdog Millionnaire’ projecting the slums of Mumbai in a cheap mediocre style, ‘Pipani’ has rightly concluded indicating that the film made by Freda Russel reflecting the real situation of the village can also win Oscars award. When Popat tells this news to an old villager, he replies, “What have we got?”. And, that delivers the film’s message. The film has openly used the advertisements of the sponsors, when Popat calls it an official break, before the commercial scene was played.

As a Hollywood director Kristin Piesker from Germany has done a good job. She is very much at ease, in her debut film. Makarand Anaspure is best suited in the role of Popat. Kranti Redkar finds the best opportunity to display her talent as an actress in search of a role, to win national award. Ravi kale, Chandrakant Kulkarni and Ramesh Deo look very natural in their respective roles. Vaibhav Mangle, Bharat Ganeshpure and Vikas Samudre have little to their share; but their presence counts. But, it is Hemangi Kavi, who invites all the attention. She presents a perfect village woman with her body language and excellent spontaneous expressions. Chaitanya Adkar’s music is well suited to this subject and backdrop and Chandrashekar Aiyer’s cinematography captures some of the realistic emotion filled scenes. Editing by Santosh Gothoskar is perfect. ‘Pipani’ produced by Baburao Bhor, is a sincere attempt to present reality through a cinematic format. You may call it a Black comedy.

At a time when obesity is on the rise in our country, Trupti Bhoir comes up with a unique theme through her latest film ‘Agadbam’. Aptly titled, the film talks about the strange happenings in the life of an obese girl Najuka weighing 250 kgs with a huge structure. Najuka’s father has fixed her marriage while she was a child to his friend’s son and it’s a commitment given to a priest in the temple of Lord Lingoba.

When the communication is reached between the two parties after so many years reminding each other about the promise, the stage is set to get Najuka married to late Devkule’s son Raiba, who is not allowed to see the bride, as per the tradition. Raiba, who is otherwise desperate to get married, agrees to marry Najuka with this condition. But, when he finds Najuka in her real shape, he starts hating her. Though Najuka wins the heart of her Mother-in-law and Grand Mother-in-law; with her good nature; she fails to win over her husband.
The film’s screenplay makes you a part of their family friends developing sympathy towards Najuka. When Najuka leaves her husband’s place; Raiba realizes his mistake as he is made to understand by people around him, explaining the meaning of a good ideal wife. Finally everything ends well with a happy note.

‘Agadbam’ is the kind of film that speaks about the change that Marathi film industry has brought in technical areas. Watch the Prosthetic make-up of Trupti Bhoir in that role of Najuka and you will be stunned. The usage of VFX and DI makes the film perfect in presentation. Cinematographer and director Satish Motling has used his expertise to present the film, keeping in mind the plus points of Najuka’s character. Makarand Anaspure, Trupti Bhoir, Usha Nadkarni
Trupti has dared to present herself in that get-up throughout the film, except for two songs in dream sequence , where she appears normal.

Dialogues of the film have been written by Mangesh Kulkarni, keeping in mind the mixture of village and city lifestyle. Few dialogues to impress upon the financing institution like IDBI bank were uncalled for, but they have been used to make their media partners happy. The screenplay of the film is otherwise well presented, with good editing work. You will never feel bored throughout the film. Makarand Anaspure as Raiba and Usha Nadkarni as his mother fit in perfectly into their respective roles. Trupti has played her character perfectly, to derive sympathy from the audience. She has paid more attention on her body language, especially her walking style and her voice. Music of the film is good, with two meaningful songs and one dhamaal song inviting the attention.

In all, ‘Agadbam’ is a well presented entertaining film, with a message. The film is sure to invite the attention of viewers, even other than Maharashtrians; for its novel theme. It will not be surprising, if the film maker receives offers for a remake in other languages.

Riding high on the success of ‘Saade Maade Teen’, Zee Talkies team is back with their latest movie ‘De Dhakka’. While ‘Saade Maade Teen’ was inspired from classic ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gadi’, ‘De Dhakka’ finds it inspiration from 2006 Oscar contender ‘Little Miss Sunshine’…

While there may be raised eyebrows over the trend of inspired movies, let us stay away from that point. What matters is whether the movie entertains or not? and ‘De Dhakka’ turns out to be a good entertainer. Credit must be given to the Zee Talkies team for successfully ‘Indianising’ the story (those of who have seen the original must know how different it was from typical hollywood movies)

This is the story of Jadhav family. A family with lots of troubles. Subhanrav(Shivaji Satam), his son Makarand (Makrand Anaspure), Makrand’s wife Sumi (Medha), Makarand’s children (Saksham Kulkarni) and Sayali (Gauri Vaidya) and Sumi’s brother Dhanaji (Siddharth Jadhav).

The movie begins with a brief introduction of all the family members and the audience gets to know the characters and their ambitions. Makrand is a motor mechanic who has spent all his money to fund his work which, he hopes, will make him millionaire. Subhanrav is sore with Makrand for this reason and Makrand hates subhanrav for drinking too much. Things don’t go well between two of them. While Makrand’s son aspires to be a wrestler. His daughter dreams of being a dancer. Dhanaji (Makarand’s brother in law), suffers from kleptomania. And Sumi, Makrand’s wife tries hard to keep the family happy.
Things change when sayali is selected for a dance competition and the whole family sets on a journey to Mumbai…on a autorikshaw. The Jadhav family is faced with many problems during the journey and how do they overcome them and also rediscover the family ties during the journey forms the rest of the story.

First half is very engaging, all the main characters are introduced and established. Then the movie moves ahead and audience gets to know of all the problems that the Jadhav family is facing, this part has been effectively handled with the help of some comic moments. The directors have done good job of maintaining the fine balance between comedy and emotional scenes. But the second half seems to drag at someplaces. The final dance competition is ok. Makrand’s speech towards the end seems to deviate from the main theme but nonetheless it should go well with the audience as it directly appeals to your heart.

The movie has a good storyline (Well, the credit goes to the original ) but the screenplay fails to take the full advantage of the story. The way police officer is portrayed is childish. Even Dhanaji’s multiple personality disorder doesn’t fit in properly. The confrontations between Makrand and Subhanrav seem repeating in the second half. And try as hard as you can, it’s bit hard to imagine audience booing away a lavani performance in dance competition at mumbai. The writers and director should have worked on these loose ends.

The performances are good. Shivaji Satam’s acting seems monotonous though. Makrand’s character has many shades, a loving and caring father, an angry son, a troubled husband and he shows all the emotions with ease. Siddharth Jadhav gives an energetic performance once again. Not a single moment is dull when he is on screen. Ajit-Atul & Sameer’s music is as usual catchy. The background music seems loud at some places. The title track ‘De Dhakka’ is excellent and it goes perfectly well with the story.
On the whole, ‘De Dhakka’ is a good one time watch.
