‘Dhondi Champya‘ will be released on 16th December all over Maharastra and therefore the film lovers will have to wait for next two weeks to see whether these two love stories become successful or the enemity between Ankush and Umaji come in their way? According to director Dnyanesh Bhalekar, comedy subjects are favourites of Marathi audience and therefore they have presented this film, which can be enjoyed together by the entire family.This film has a love story and humour combined together. Story of this film is is inspired by the story of Prabhakar Bhogale, while story, screenplay and dialogues are written by Dnyanesh Bhalekar and Sagar Kesarkar.

In spite of competition faced from private channels, Doordarshan Sahyadri channel is trying to make its presence felt, among section of people, living in some cities and rural areas of Maharashtra. Till now, Doordarshan had not tapped the prime time slots for their serials, during the past several years. But, now they are all set to introduce nine new serials, on different subjects and with well known artistes, during the prime time 8pm to 10 pm.daily.

Among the new serials, prominent among them will be ‘Maati Kokanchi Naati Janmachi’ which is targeted at youngsters from Konkan. Then, there are other social issues presented through story based serials  like ‘Pashanpati’ and  period serial ‘Sushilecha Dev’ based on the novel of Waman Malhar Joshi. There will be family serials like  ‘Vachanbaddh’, ‘Goshta Umaltya Manachi’ and ‘Sangarsh Milanacha’ to inspire the women. To entertain the children, there will be an interesting serial like ‘Bunty Television.

We also understand that actress Aishwarya Narkar will also be presenting  series of stories through her new serial ‘Chitrakathi’,  based on the literature of well known writers, under the banner of her new production company ‘Aishwarya Arts’. For those, who love to watch detective serials, DD Sahyadri  will be presenting interesting murder mysteries, detected through  their serial ‘Anakalniya’. Now, it will be interesting to see, how these serials will compete with other ongoing Marathi serials on private channels ? But, one thing is sure, that DD Sahyadri is  ready for it, as the subjects they have picked up,  are very interesting  .

Now, talking about the new arrivals on private channels, there was big hope from Bharat Jadhav show on Colors channel. But, their initial episodes were not very appealing. They need to focus more on good scripting.

In ‘Majhe Pati Soubhagyavati’ there was a lot of time wasted in preparing Vaibhav Mangale in the make up of an actress, for the photo shoot. The scene, in which Vaibhav hesitating to be free, in presence of actor Ashok Shinde , for the photo shoot, wasn’t very convincing. Being a professional actor, there was no need to show him feeling shy, in front of another  male actor. One could understand his awkwardness in presence of the hair dresser, but not the male lead actor. Moreover, it is observed that the exchange of dialogues between Ramesh Bhatkar and Ashok Shinde, are repeated several times, with the same expressions given by both.

What was interesting to watch during the week, was the gripping story split in three episodes, in ‘Asmita’ on Zee Marathi. But, showing the parallel investigation carried out by ‘Asmita’ to prove her ‘father in law guilty’ in the murder of her father, only diverted the interest from the ongoing case of fake Income tax Officers.

Last year, a Marathi film ‘Golaberij’ based on P. L. Deshpande’s popular characters from his stories was released. The film was directed by Kshitij Zarapkar. In that film, the short story of ‘Mhais’ was also there. But, since the makers of ‘Chandi’ who had exclusively acquired the rights of the story of ‘Mhais’, issued legal notice to the makers of ‘Golaberij'; which forced them to delete that particular episode from the film. But, those who attended the press show of ‘Golaberij’ had the privilege of watching that part, which was very well presented.

Now, a year later, we find this much talked about film ‘Chandi’ based on the story of ‘Mhais’ by eminent writer late P. L. Deshpande; being officially released on 14th June 2013, all over Maharashtra. A big hype was created about this film, inviting dignitaries like Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare & Ms. Vijaya Rajadhyaksha, who showed their physical presence at the Premiere show held at Sun City, Vile Parle on 12th January, which was the death anniversary of P. L. Even MNS Chief Raj Thackeray attended this show, as a special invitee.

Frankly speaking, the original short story of ‘Mhais’ is based on an incident of a buffalo being knocked down by a State transport Bus, on its way to Mumbai from a village in Konkan. This results in a big show, as the real owner of the buffalo not allowing the Bus to proceed further, till police party arrives for investigation. The situation goes on to show the reactions of the stranded bus passengers and their arguments with villagers, coming in support of the owner of the buffalo.

To present this film in cinematic format, the director duo Sameer Naik & Dnyaneshwar Govekar have taken the liberties to add some more characters, which were not in the original story and hence clearly deviating from the original story. The film begins well with the three characters from a village ‘Savarde’, off Chiplun, on Mumbai Goa highway . So, we find Gaja Khot (Bhau kadam) and Sane (Pradeep Patwardhan) trying to overpower the buffalo owned by Dharma Mandavkar (Prabhakar More), which goes out of control.

In the meantime, we watch the scene at another village, where a senior citizen and well known personality from the village Bapusaheb More( Ramesh Deo) getting ready to proceed to Mumbai, to begin his indefinite fast, over his demand of reviving the Marathi schools in villages. He hires a ST Bus and looks for support from other villagers.

Taking advantage of this situation, different people from the village, take a free ride on the bus to Mumbai to attend to their personal work . So, we find a big team of characters led by Bapusaheb More, followed by chatterbox Dattu( Vaibhav Mangale), his flirt young sister Keshar ( Rupali Bhosale) and a forced character of Gampu, played by Santosh Pawar, to create a place for hero in this film. Writer Anil Pawar has thus taken unnecessary liberties to show the affair of Gampu, besides Keshar also being crazy after him. Finally, the big troupe leave by bus, till it comes to a halt, after knocking down Dharma’s buffalo on the road off. Savarde.

It is at this stage, the original short story of ‘Mhais’ , gets too loud and is stretched too long with unnecessary sequences. The progress of happenings thereafter, clearly indicate that the director duo were running short of ideas to create spontaneous laughter among the audience. You just can’t compare the pleasure of reading the original story with that of watching its cinematic form for little more than two hours, with unnecessary additions. Moreover, the use of mobile phone in the film, brought the film’s story into the present days and that lost the originality.

The only surprise given in the climax is the creation of the original owner of the buffalo, in the form of P.L. Deshpande. Thanks to the special effects team. ‘Chandi’ offers good performances from 86 year old evergreen actor Ramesh Deo. His enthusiasm is to be highly appreciated. Vaibhav Mangale, Bhau kadam, Prabhakar More, Pradeep Patrwardhan, Sanjivani Jadhav, kishori Ambiye & Rupali Bhosale are at their best along with a big team of artistes; but they have not been able to make use of more dialogues over and above the few original jokes of P.L.

You find a big crowd of characters. But, Only Rupali Bhosale finds an author created role, which is most suited to her. Music of this film is just ordinary; but, Sameer Athlye’s cinematography is good. The film just needed that proper attention on its screenplay, which failed to capture the audience. If you compare ‘Chandi’ with ‘Golaberij’, the former was a better presented film with realistic characters. Even that sequence of ‘Mhais’ in that film looked more realistic. ‘Chandi’ has thus turned out to be an average comedy film.

Known for his Police detection stories, writer Shrikant Sinker had also written in the past a play ‘Aaliya Bhogasi’ based on a team of mentally unstable people in a mental asylum, who only think of their past profession and enact their skills all the time. Producer Mahesh Manjrekar, perhaps got inspired with that play, while projecting his characters through his new film ‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’, which also revolves around 5 such mentally unstable characters( Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav, Ankush Choudhary, Vaibhav Mangale & Sanjay Narvekar), who are being treated in his own way at a private Mental asylum by Dr. Subodh ( played by Mahesh himself) , attached to that asylum.

Mr. Manjrekar known for his offerings on sensational subjects, this time thought of moving into comedy and hence selected this performance oriented film with the sole motive of entertaining the audience. Directed jointly by Atul kale and Sudesh Manjrekar, the producer has himself got involved into the screenplay and dialogues in the company of Abhijeet Deshpande and Sanjay Pawar. There is nothing much seriously happening into the screenplay, except for theose mischievous acts by the five characters , which only encourage competition among themselves. It only looked like that the directors had during the pre-interval stage had given complete freedom to them, resulting into overacting by atleast two characters.

It was only after interval, it gave an impression that the director duo had taken total control of the film. The happenings in the film clearly indicate that each character had his own share to display talent under a given situation, which was nothing but pose mentally disturbed and perform an act to look more natural in that condition. And, this experiment succeeds only to a certain extent in post interval session comprising of 55 minutes.The film does not pay much attention on the past history of these characters, except for Bharat Jadhav, whose past incidence has been shown for proving him mentally unstable. The total length of film is just nearing two hours, a perfect length, as further extension would have certainly taxed the audience.

‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’ is a male dominated film, as the three girls namely Manva, Kranti and Poorva play just show pieces and have been rightly used in the climax scene as item girls. Manva makes her appearance just at the stroke of interval, while Kranti comes in almost towards the end of the film. Most of the scenes in the film are based on ‘mind act’ done by each character and among them Sanjay Narvekar invites all the attention for his cricket gimmicks that go very well with his body language. His character also springs a surprise in the climax, thus turning him into a real hero.

Watching the performances of other artistes, Bharat Jadhav, Vaibhav Mangale, Ankush Choudhary and Mahesh Manjrekar himself are all within their limits, except for Siddharth, who has been controlled in the second half, avoiding dialogues for him. Kamlakar Satpute, playing the gay Don is just fine; nothing exceptional about his performance, as we have seen such characters on the screen in the past. Since the film has Bollywood flavour, he reminds you of Kulbhushan Kharbanda in ‘Shaan’, but doesn’t look dangerous. Among the three doctors from the asylum playing villains, Kishore Kadam is impressive. Others in the supporting cast have done well, but Santosh Juvekar has been wasted in that ordinary looking side role.

There isn’t much scope for music in the film, except for the so called item number in the climax, where lavani has been performed in a different style. The background music sounded loud pre interval, but has been used well in the later part of the film. Cinematography by Ajit Reddy is good . The film is likely to impress the kind of audience who enjoy watching TV shows like ‘Comedy Circus’ and ‘Fu bai Fu’, as this film is based only on performances to entertain the audience with a given theme.
