Tributes paid by Google Doodle to Chitrapati V.Shantaram on his 116th Birth Anniversary

Legendary V. Shantaram had created his own place offering many sensible films on social issues. Incidentally, his production Company Rajkamal Kalamandir has completed 75 years. So, to pay him tributes on the occasion of his 116th Birth anniversary on 18th November 2017 , V.Shantaram Motion Pictures Foundation President Mr. Kiran Shantaram, with the help of Google Doodle have introduced a link ‘A Colossus of Indian Cinema‘ on their website to present a Virtual Exhibition on his life journey.

So, the film lovers will be able to view everything they wanted to know about the legendary actor- filmmaker and his films. The scripting and presentation of this exhibition has been made by Film Scholar and Documentary film maker Sanjit Narvekar. Another gift offered to film lovers on this occasion is the Online edition Hindi and Marathi version of V. Shantaram‘ the autobiography of V.Shantaram in e book form will also be released by Book Ganga

‘Pinjra’ creates a buzz with its new look

V.Shantaram’s hit Super film ‘Pinjra‘ has already created a buzz among young Marathi film lovers, as they will get an opportunity to watch this film on big screen and that too with a new look, with the support of latest technology. But, it is not yet clear, in how many theatres in Maharashtra, the film will be released on 18th March 2016. Only theatre confirmed is Plaza Cinema, Mumbai, where the film was released in 1972 and celebrated Jubilee.

The promotion of the film is also going on well, with the stars of this film giving interviews to the media, expressing their reaction and experience while working in this film. Dr.Lagoo, who otherwise avoids attending functions, has also addressed a press conference in a Pune hotel, much to the surprise of many media persons. In fact, Dr.Lagoo’s personal views about this film and in particular about the film maker like V.Shantaram, will certainly help in this film’s promotion. No other Marathi films are releasing on coming Friday, which is also good for this film. One thing is sure that Marathi film lovers, would certainly love to watch this film in theatres, once again, that too with a new look.

Directed by V. Shantaram, the film’s lead stars were Dr. Shriram Lagoo, Sandhya and Neelu Phule. Set on the backdrop of Tamasha folk musical theatre of Maharashtra, the film is about a a respected school teacher, played by Dr. Lagoo, who wants to reform a village and also a Tamasha performer, played by Sandhya; but, ends up falling in love with her.

The film is known for its wonderful music of Ram Kadam and brilliant dance numbers picturised on the lead actress Sandhya, known for her dancing skills. It was also the debut film of then noted theatre actor, Dr. Shriram Lagoo. The film also introduced colour to Marathi cinema. In 1973, it won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi .

V. Shantaram’s most popular film Pinjra was released in 1972. But, the songs of this film are still popular. Even the performances of lead characters like Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Sandhya & Nilu Phule are still fresh in our memory.  The film has been set on the backdrop of  a village, presenting Tamasha folk musical theatre of Maharashtra.  The story revolves around  a morally righteousness school teacher, played by Dr. Lagoo, who wants to reform a Tamasha performer, played Sandhya, but ends up falling in love with her.

Now, after 44 years, Pinjra will be released again on 18th March 2016, at Plaza Cinema , Mumbai, where it was released earlier.  Priyadarshni Films, which had taken the distribution rights from Mr. Kiran Shantaram, had used the latest technology at Prasad Lab to give a new look to original print, besides  using Dolby sound effect. It remains to be seen, how the the new generation would respond to this film.

Veteran Marathi Journalist Isaq Mujawar is no more

On the eve of Jagatik Marathi Din reached a sad news of demise of veteran film critic Isaq Mujawar. A reputed and highly respected film critic, columnist and writer, he was active with his writings even at an advanced age of 80+. Considered to be an encyclopaedia of marathi and hindi film industry, he had more than fifty books to his credit, Eka Songadyachi Batavani, Teen Pidhyancha Aawaj – Lata, Mukhavata, Chitramauli are to name a few. ‘Marathi Cinemancha 100 Varshancha Aadhava’ was his latest contribution.

After starting his career at an early age in 1955, he held various posts in print media publications. His writing on films and film people commanded respect. His passion for ‘film’ writing brought many stalwarts like V Shantaram, Bhalji Pendharkar and Sachin Pilgaonkar, Ashok Saraf, Laxmikant Berde closer to him, in personal life. He was felicitated with Kalamaharshi Baburao Painter Lifetime Achievement Award a couple of years ago and last year he was awarded Chitrabhushan award by Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal.
Marathi Movie World joins his family in the time of grief. Rest in peace Isaq Mujawar.

Chitrapati V.Shantaram Awards Presented

The 17th edition of the V.Shantaram Awards for the best in Indian cinema, were presented at a glittering function at a suburban five-star hotel recently. The event was also a part of the felicitation to actress Sandhya who was a part of many Shantaram classics like ‘Navrang’, ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje’, ‘Jal Bin Machli Nritya Bin Machli’, ‘Pinjara’, etc .

On this occasion, Sandhyaji requested the cine lovers to bless her children .
A special dance medley of Sandhyaji’s classic dance numbers from ‘Navrang’ were performed by choreographer Pony Verma and group, much to the delight of audience.

Mr. Kiran Shantaram said that the V.Shantaram awards were special, as out of 1000 films made in India in 2009, only a select few were nominated by the jury members.

The awards presented were for- Best Film-Kanjeevaram(Malayalam –Director-Priyadarshan), Best Actor-Prakash Raj(Wanted Fame)-Malayalam ‘Kanjeevaram’ –Dir-Priyadarshan, Best FemaleActor-Rani Mukherjee –(Dil Bole Hadippa), Best Supporting Actor-Female- Renuka Shahane( Rita), Best Music -Preetam (Love Aaj Kal), Best Cinem atography –Theeru(Kanjivaram), Best Editing Aarti Bajaj( Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), Best Sound Recording -Anuj Mathur(Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), Special Award in Direction Nandita Das(Firaaq ).

Celebrities who were spotted at the event were- Jeetendra, Randhir Kapoor,Yash and Pami Chopra , Vikas Desai, Basu Chatterjee, Jayshree.T, Imtiaz Ali, Dinesh Vijan, Upendra Limaye, Jagmohan Mundhra, Pandit Jasraj, Durga Jasraj,Sulochana, Ashok and Nivedita Saraf etc. Actor-VJ- Gaurav Kapur hosted the show in his witty comic way, while Rahul Shantaram proposed vote of thanks.
