He made his debut in Marathi films in 70s. He has a terrific sense of timing, when he performs comedy scenes with his co stars. No wonder, his pairing with late Laxmikant Berde turned out to be a hit. He must have done maximum Marathi films with Laxmikant Berde in 80s. But, no one can forget his cunning havaldar in Dada Kondke’s 1975 film ‘Pandu Hawaldar‘ and a ‘Munimji’ in Rakesh Roshan’s film ‘Karan Arjun‘ in 1995. During the past 40 years, he has played a variety of roles in Marathi and Hindi films .But, he was more known for his comedy..

Biography / Profile:

Dhundiraj Govind Phalke by original name was born on 30th April 1870 in Trimbakeshwar near Nasik. Born Indian nation has given a great contribution to Indian cinema. Phalke did his art education from J.J school of art – Mumbai (that time Bombay) from 1885 till 1890 and then moved to Kalabhavan Baroda.for higher education in arts

Phalke’s father was an accomplished Sanskrit scholar. Phalke started his professional career as portrait photographer In Godhra but left business after the death of his first wife and child in an outbreak of the plague. He even went on to do stage makeup, and also assisted a German illusionist named Carl Hertz due to his great interest in magic. He started Phalke’s Art Printing & Engraving Works at Lonavala in 1908, and later Laxmi Art Printing for making photolitho transfers of Ravi Varma’s oleographs. He also went to Germany to buy three-color printing machines. The changing point in Phalke’s life was when he first time saw silent film “The Life of Christ”. The film made such a great impact on his mind that he began to think if such films could be ever made with Indian themes. After raising some money and experimenting with a few short films, he went to London in February 1912 to learn the art and craft of film-making. Cecil Hepworth of Walton Studios trained him in the craft of film-making. Phalke bought a Willamson camera and returned India and set up Phalke Films in Bombay (current Mumbai).His second wife Saraswati Phalke was an active partner in the venture, who not only managed the Studio but also looked after the technical aspects of film-making. These efforts gave birth to first India’s full length cinema named “Raja Harishchandra” in 1912. With this Indian cinema began to grow and the current picture is well known to everyone.

In 1918 he established Hindustan Films along with 5 other business partners and later resigned in 1920. After his last film, Phalke retired from film making. He died on 16 February 1944.

To honor this legend Indian government has started with Dadasaheb Phalke Award. This award is bestowed to the person who has dedicated his life and given a valuable contribution to Indian cinema. It is described as lifetime achievement award. Devika Rani was the first to receive this award in 1969. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale, Dev Anand, Naushad are one of the few to receive this award.

Every Indian is thankful to this great man for his selfless devotion and being a pioneer to start the new era of entertainment called ‘Cinema’.

Having a family background of dance, writing and acting , Samidha Guru started and father late Suresh Deshpande, was a noted writer and director of Marathi plays. Her sister is a ‘Kathak Visharad’ and is a known actress. Even her husband (Abhijit Guru) is a good writer, actor and director . Samidha is BSc (Microbiology) along with BA (English literature). Before shifting to Mumbai, she had actively participated in theatre and also did a teaching job for a couple of years. After marriage, she came to Mumbai and got a break on small screen. She gives all credit to her husband and family. She has also acted in many stage plays at Nagpur.

His mother Uma Tilak, is a Bharatanatyam teacher and she runs ‘Kalaniketan Sanstha’ in Pune. Acting was his passion since childhood. When he decided to take up acting as his career, he received good support from his family. Suyash is all praise for his parents, especially his father.

Known for his simplicity, modesty, commitment and positive attitude, veteran Marathi actor Ashok Shinde, is very popular in Marathi entertainment industry. Originally from Pune, his father was a commercial makeup artist. After completing his B.E. degree, he worked in Telco for 6 months. He also worked as a makeup artist for a few days, with his friend Vikram Gaikwad. But, soon thereafter, he left this work and since 1987, opted for acting as a full time career. A graduate in Sanskrit from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Pallavi has participated in various one act plays, since her college days and has won prizes as best actress. Her best performance was in an experimental play ‘Meter Down’ for which she won the best actress award from Zee TV.

Before appearing in ‘Runji’, she has performed in commercial Marathi plays like Chandralekha’s ‘Prem Gandh’, Suyog’s Mangesh Kadam directed ‘Prema Tuza Rang Kasaa’, in which Ashok Saraf played the lead. Very recently she played the lead role opposite Nikhil Ratnaparakhi in popular Marathi play ‘Tom Aani Jerry’. Best thing about Pallavi is that besides acting, she does find time for social work. She is associated with one NGO, taking care of hearing and speech impaired people. Perhaps, Pallavi’s parents being hearing and speech impaired, must have driven her to this work, for a social cause. Hats off to her.
