Five years ago, Film maker Samruddhi Porey through  her very first film had dealt with the subject of growing surrogacy practices in India. So, this subject is not new to Marathi cinema. But, every film maker has different ideas to present this subject. Now, director Mukesh Malik, with the help of Sunil Harishchandra has scripted this subject in his own way, to make a Marathi film ‘Toh Aani Mee‘. The film is now all set to release coming Friday, i.e. 19^th August 2016.

Made under the banner of Yash Creations, the film ‘Toh Aani Mee‘ is produced by Ankush Vitthal Sutar and stars Subodh Bhave, Girija Joshi, Shweta Shinde, Prasad Oak, Prasad Pandit, Jyoti Mhalse, Madhav Vaze, Rama Joshi, Smita Patkar, child artiste Deep Sutar and Smita Gondkar in guest appearance. Camera work by Anil Chandel & Shubhra Dutta, Music by Aslam Keyi are other credits. The makers of this film have stated that besides passing a social message through this film, they have also ensured to entertain the audience, through the film’s humor filled screenplay.

Actor, producer director Ashutosh Raj is making a Marathi film titled ‘Jalsa’. Recently, the film was launched with muhurat, followed by shooting. Ashutosh who has written the story of the film , along with Abhiram Bhadkamkar. Incidentally, Abhiram is a creative director of this film, which also stars popular comedian Bharat Ganeshpure. The other star cast of the film, besides Ashutosh and Bharat , comprise of Nikhil Wairagar, Girija Joshi, Shital Ahirrao,Sonali Vinod, Sagar Karande, Abhijit Chavan, Arun Kadam & Ankur Vadhave.

The story of this film is about two youngsters Amar & Prem from Pune from rich family, who are keen on taking up acting as their career, much against the wish of their parents.  But, their maternal uncle encourages and helps them. Their journey on way to this glittering field, is all that the film will present, through its humour filled screenplay.  The film will be released soon, after completion of shooting and post production work.

After making a sensible film like ‘Zale Mokale Aakash’ , film maker Rajendra Bandivadekar now seems to be inspired by all those aspects adopted by commercial films, which are much needed to entertain the audience and reach out to maximum people . In his latest released film ‘Dhamak’, which has been independently written and directed by him, he has presented all those sequences, required for the recipe of a typical formula film. His inspiration comes from all those Bollywood films of the past, where the hero coming to city side from a village, poses as a big Boss of a company, though he works as a office peon.

When Morya ( Aniket Vishwasrao) returns to his village, to marry his maternal uncle’s daughter, he finds his would be wife – Gauri (Girija Joshi) , too childish and trying to keep herself away from him. He also faces resistance from the local goon, who resembles ‘Shakaal’ of ‘Shaan’ and does all those acts like Gulshan Grover, be it playing his violin in the rains or targeting young girls. This villain, called Vikram dada (Shoneel Shinde) , who is the son of a politician, believes only three ‘V’s; i.e. Violin, Violence and Victory. So, Morya takes on Vikram dada and his associates one by one , with the help of his village friend Javed ( Ajay Padhye) and three other friends from his town, who come for his marriage. Till interval, he manages to win Gauri’s heart and also dares to challenge the strongman Vikram dada and his group.

But, in the post interval session, the director has another hero in his mind. So, he presents Inspector Pratap Malvankar (Aashok Samarth), who not only beats up Vikram dada in public place, but also puts him behind the bars, with all evidences against him. So, Morya takes a break and allows Inspector Malwankar to tell his story. There is also a political fight in the form of assembly elections, with Morya’ s uncle Dr. Chachad ( Mohan Joshi) fighting against the corrupt Politician and Vikram dada’s father Bhausaheb Inamdar (Vidydhar Joshi) and winning the elections. All is well at the end; but before that you witness two item numbers by Bollywood dancers Meghna Naidu and Mumaith khan, a romantic song sequence picturised on Morya and Gauri in mod looks and a long action filled fight sequence in the rains between Morya and Vikram dada.

‘Dhamak’ has thus turned out to be a typical commercial formula film, on the lines of Bollywood action films. Watch the very first sequence in the film, where Morya dreams a ‘Deewar’ scene, imagining himself in place of Amitabh Bachchan fighting all alone with a group of criminals, locking them up in their own den .There is no compromise by the film maker on budget, while shooting the glamour filled dances, stunt filled action scenes and while displaying wonderful dress designs of Girija Joshi in a dream song sequence at picturesque location. The crowd scenes and dances are well handled, with good choreography by Umesh Jadhav and excellent camera work by Prasad Bhende. Music by Nirmal Kumar is just fine.

Aniket Vishwasrao does well as Morya, playing both comedy and action well. But, in the post interval session, he literally ceases to be the hero of the film. His role is taken over by Ashok Samarth, who has his own story to narrate, while displaying his well shaped body & walking style, besides narrating his plans to trap Vikram dada. Girija Joshi has good scope to display her acting skills, as a typical innocent village girl, in the first session of the film. But, in the post interval session, she looks more glamorous, with her changed appearance, especially in the dream song sequence with Aniket. Mohan Joshi as Dr. Chachad and Morya’s maternal uncle, does a good job, like a versatile actor. He gets good support from Uma Sardeshmukh, who plays his wife in the film.

Bad man Shoneel Shinde has got ample scope to display his muscles, but the Hindi theatre artist who makes his debut in Marathi, finds less scope to display his acting potential. Most of the time, he is at the receiving end, being beaten up either by Morya or Inspector Malvankar. So, it is Ashok Samarth, who finds a good scope in post interval session. He seemed to be favourite of the director, for the manner in which he has been projected, in this film, with a lot of soft corner towards his character. Jaywant Wadkar, Viju Khote, Girish Salvi, Dhanjay Mandrekar, Maushami Tondwalkar and others offer good support. Vidhyadahar Joshi arrives almost towards the concluding part of the film, to display his typical style of a selfish politician. But, Ajay Padhye, playing a Muslim youth and a family friend of Chachads, invites attention with his notable performance in this film.

‘Dhamak’ has served a typical Bollywood recipe for the masses. It is certainly not the kind of film to receive appreciation from critics. One can understand the desperation of the film maker, to make such a commercial film, only to receive recognition, after attempting a sensible film like ‘Zale Mokale Aaakash’ last year and going unnoticed. Not a bad idea, Mr. Bandivadekar. But, we expect a better film from you next time. Not a Bollywood formula, again.

Govinda and Ganapati are two such festivals in Maharashtra, which are now days becoming more political than cultural festivals. The shrewd politicians are exploiting the sentiments of enthusiastic youth, luring them with their money power to earn political mileage for themselves. Set on the backdrop of this theme, new Marathi film ‘Govinda’ exposes the motives of one such politician who is more keen on making his own progress in political circle at the cost of the lives of thousands of Govindas, who take risks to rise to maximum heights by forming human pyramids , to win the attractive cash prizes.
Rajan Mayekar ( Swapnil Joshi) is one such dynamic youngster, who is the son of a honest but suspended Police officer( Uday Tikekar); who has been fixed by the builder turned politician Hitesh Gosavi ( Vidyadhar Joshi) , popularly known as Mama. Rajan and his group of friends who are taking lead during Govinda and Ganapati festival in their locality; are lured by the cash prize of Rs. 1 Crore offered by Mama to break the dahi handi.

Rajan has a girlfriend Shravani ( Girija Joshi) living in the neighbourhood; but her father (Arun Nalavade) and Rajan’s father are enemies, always fighting over small issues. Instead of preparing for his MPSC exams, as desired by his father and girl friend; Rajan is more keen on event management. He does not believe in following the path of his father, who has suffered because of his honesty. So, to become richer through fast track, he tries to impress Mama, who is also keen on redeveloping his colony.

However, the shrewd politician, has other plans. When Rajan comes to know the truth about Mama using him for his personal gain and having falsely implicated his father; he dares to challenge him. But, Mama plays all his tricks, only to silence his voice. Finally, after recovering from his leg injury, suffered while breaking Mama’s Hundi, Rajan prepares hard for his examination and becomes strong enough to teach a lesson to the Politician.

The film deals with a subject, which is so relevant to make the youngsters understand how these politicians are using them for their personal gain, at the cost of their lives. The film clearly hints at the non availability of safety requirements at the site of such prize Money Govinda competitions. It also clearly shows how the Politicians manage media support for their publicity. In one of the scenes, it is clearly shown as to how big water cannons are used to break the pyramids of the team, which is about to break the Hundi. And last but not the least; where from the money comes during Govinda sponsorship ?

‘Govinda’ certainly delivers a timely message at the most appropriate time when the festival season is just on the way; but, some of the scenes have been wrapped up in the screenplay, e.g. like the sudden cancellation of Shravani’s marriage to a boy from Kuwait, followed by quick understanding between Rajan’s and Shravani’s parents. Even the climax scene showing Rajan achieving a powerful position in a short period and getting Mama arrested with his property raided, looks more like a typical formula film style. But, looking at the sincere effort put in by the film maker, in doing a good study about the commercialisation of this popular festival, the film has turned out to be a fairly good presentation .

Swapnil Joshi is now a popular hero of Marathi films. Through his performance in ‘Govinda’ , he has proved that he can pull the success of a film at his own strength. He is certainly a very good actor, who performs every character he plays through his heart and playing this role of Rajan Mayekar with full commitment, is the best example. Swapnil’s fans shouldn’t miss this film. Girija Joshi looks impressive as his co star and has given good support. Considering her character from a typical Middle class family, the director has not glamorized her character.

For both Swapnil and Girija, the director has used light make up, to make them look more natural. Arun Nalawade and Uday Tikekar offer a good support; but Vidyadhar Joshi impresses more, as the perfect villain in Marathi film industry. All the youngsters in the group of Swapnil, have performed very well. Some of them are new faces. Dialogues of the film by Arwind Jagtap are well written. Music by Rohan Pradhan is fine; but, he has impressed more with his background music. Naddkumar Patil’s cinematography has captured the Dahi handi and action scenes and song sequences very well. In short, ‘Govinda’ entertains with a timely message.
