It looks like that our Marathi film makers are devoid of good scripts. In the name of comedy, today they are offering anything that is available ready made. As it is, over the years our Bollywood has offered them so much to imitate in Marathi that the search becomes much easier. Director Mahesh Tilekar’s latest film ‘Laadi Godi’ is one such experiment where you will find lots of popular Marathi artistes together to mock the styles of Bollywood personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra,Jitendra, Hema Malini, Sridevi, Rekha, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri, Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Oh, sorry! The list is not over. There is Govinda and Karishma too.
So, using the names of these stars in the respective characters in this film, our Marathi stars comprising of Tushar Dalvi, Sanjay Narvekar, Subodh Bhave, Kranti Redkar, Resham Tipnis, Varsha Usgaonkar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Smita Shewale, Bharat Jadhav, Deepali Syed , Vijay Chavan and Kishori Ambiye have tried their best to mock them. In addition to that Shweta Shinde plays an abrupt role of an auto rickshaw driver just for two scenes. Now, if you try to measure the length of their roles, it will be noticed that they are all on a picnic at a guest house.
Now, to say something about the film’s story, Just as our three heroines – Rekha, Hema and Sridevi hate men the three heroes played by Amit, Daharmendra and Jitendra hate women. The main hero of the film Rajesh keeps on making frequent appearances in between the screenplay in different forms, begging before the three women to vacate his bunglow, as his newly wedded wife Sharmila would only then agree to celebrate their honeymoon there. One wonders, as to why he couldn’t celebrate his honeymoon elsewhere? But, then how would the film progress further? So, Rajesh seeks help from the trio comprising of Amit, Dharmendra and Jitendra to drive away these three women from his bungalow. He accommodates them on the Ground floor.
In comes Anil( Aniket) , who has been brought up by the three men in absence of his father and also Madhuri ( Smita Shewale) who has grown up in the shelter of the three women in absence of her mother. While Anil- Madhuri fall in love with each other, in spite of the opposition of their uncles and aunties; the two attendants of the bungalow- Govinda and karishma also fall for each other in a filmi style . Obviously, watching these two couples, the tenants find each other’s match. And with that we see happy ending of the film.
Such a kind of comedy, where every star tries to mock a bollywood personality suits well in a mimicry item on the stage in a reality show or even to that extent in a stage play, where they are provided the liberty to perform the way they want. But, the same experiment may not necessarily work in a cinema. In Maharashtra, we have different type of audience for drama and movie. The taste differs, as the presentation forms are different. There are few exceptions, where the scripts of both a drama or a movie are based on a real story or suspense filled fiction. However, in the case of ‘Laadi Godi’ it is only mockery of Bollywood, without any specific purpose. So, just by naming the characters with these popular Bollywood personalities, failed to invite the attention of all. The presentation has to be very perfect to create that spontaneous laughter. And frankly speaking, that does not happen in ‘Laadi Godi’.
The biggest flaw in the screenplay is that the sequences haven’t been properly placed in the order. When Anil walks in the house with gifts for his uncles, he presents Jitendra a pair of white shoes, which he is shown wearing in a previous scene. Sanjay Narvekar plays the scene of ‘Sholay’ in a typical Dharmendra style climbing on the top of the water tank, addressing the villagers; but there are no villagers around. There is only Hema. One can understand that while watching such films in a theatre , you have to leave your logical thinking process behind; but, that does not mean that the film maker should taste the patience of the audience. ‘Laadi Godi’ has thus turned out to be just another ordinary marathi film, certainly not for multiplex audience. Late Debu Deodhar, however leaves his mark as a cinematographer; as this is the last film he did before his untimely death. So, is the case with Nilu Phule, who makes a guest appearance in this film.

In the year 1987, T. Rama Rao made a family social with the name of ‘Sansaar’ in Hindi, starring Anupam Kher, Seema Deo, Raj Babbar, Rekha, Archana Joglekar, Shekhar Suman and Ajinkya Deo in important roles. Now, exactly 22 years later Director Sachin Deo comes up with its Marathi version in the name of ‘Anolkhi He Ghar Majhe’. So, how do you call this Ghar Anolkhe, when it is just a new ‘Sansaar’? One can understand about the situation then and now, but the human tendency hasn’t changed. Whether it is father’s ego with the progression of age or son’s selfishness, when it comes to living in a joint family system. Nothing seems to have changed. In fact, with the prevailing nuclear family system, we hardly find joint family system existing now. But, film makers Junaid Memon and Shekhar More thought that this was the right time to strike with the old formula to spread awareness among the new generation. .
So, Din Dayal Sharma is replaced by Jagannath Deshmukh( Ashok Saraf) who takes retirement from his job and pays off the debt that has multiplied over the years for bringing up his three sons and making two of them capable of shouldering their responsibilities. He thinks that his elder son (Tushar Dalvi) who is having a good job and his second son ( Pushkar Shroti) who is a motor mechanic; would be able to support the family. The youngest son ( Sushant Shelar) is in the final year of Engineering. With the eldest son already married to Shubhada( Kavita Laad Medhekar), the senior Deshmukh looks a happy man wanting to relax rest of his life. Kavita Laad in Anolkhi he ghar majhe
But, sensing the burden of expenditure falling upon him after his father’s retirement and with the marriage of his brother followed by the return of his married sister back home after dispute with her husband ; Shekhar opens up a fight with his parents, over expenditure sharing at home. This happens when his wife goes for delivery to her parent’s place. This sudden outburst by the eldest son also hurts old man’s ego and he draws a line in their big house earmarking two parts. He swears to teach his elder son a lesson. With the moral support of his second son who earns extra doing night shifts, he himself takes up a job in a library.
So, you find two families living in the same house, when Shubhda returns with her baby. She is shocked to find this division, being the most sensible person in the family. At this stage, Shubhada takes the lead to reunite the family, taking steps one by one. And then, this family drama of almost two and half hours, concludes with happy ending. Ashok Saraf , plays the family head in his own style, but his wig does not look natural. Meghna Vaidya plays his wife- Malati with ease. Both Tushar and Kavita as husband and wife look very natural in their behaviour, especially while supporting each other very well in all the scenes they have done together. Pushkar Shroti is good as the most obedient son, while Sushant Shelar looks a perfect student, who gets one good scene to express his emotions. The other supporting artistes have done well, with very small role for Arun Tikekar.
‘Anolkhi He Ghar Majhe’ is otherwise a well presented film, but has dragged too long with almost 5 -6 songs picturised in outdated format. Those who have missed Hindi film ‘Sansaar’, shouldn’t miss this film, which a film for entire family.

In the era of 21st century globalization is unrepeatable part of our life. Especially in the metro cities, many of us prefers shopping malls even for vegetables than ‘mandai.’ Naturally our marriage system, relations and even social structure is changed a lot because of influence of global culture. ‘Sanai-Choughade’ is the bold (not visually, but mentally) covers all these aspects and provokes audiences to think about the success.
The story moves around Sai (Sai Tamhankar). Her elder niece Urmila (Shilpa Tulaskar) and Jijaji Shrikant (Tushar Dalvi) promises her mother on death bed that they will follow responsibility of her marriage. Sai starts living with Urmila and Shrikant after her mom’s death. Urmila and Shrikant, who had gone through love marriage, are completely unaware with ‘typical Maharashtrian arrange marriage system.’ After taking many good and bad experiences, they came to know about latest marriage bureau handled by Rahul Borgavkar (Subodh Bhave)- ‘Kande –Pohe.’ The modern marriage bureau believes on logical match making than traditional one. They organises a nice trip to a hill station. The thought behind it is all of them will get a chance to get familiar with feelings, nature and Sanai Choughade understanding of partner. Sai and Aditya (Santosh Juvekar) fall in love with each other. Just before finalisation of their marriage, Sai revealed her past. She was in love with Shryas Talpade and had given birth to his child. Shreyas was ready to marry Sai and accept the child but unfortunately he became pawn of destiny and died in an Accident. Now do Aditya accept her past? What was reaction of other people who represents society? Do Shrikant and Urmila accept her mistake? What steps Rahul Borgavkar takes to keep his motto ‘Nothing is Impossible.’ The story developes swiftly and gives answer to all these question. Thanks to director Rajiv Patil and script writer- Sanjay Pawar for handling such a sensitive issue efficiently and giving different but certainly nice experience to audiences.
Sai Tamhankar and Subodh Bhave played lead characters in the movie and both had done well. Especially Subodh Bhave catches maximum attention through amazing facial expressions. Twice or thrice Sai’s inexperience can be noticed but in her debut movie she is much promising. Santosh Juvekar, Tushar Dalvi and Shilpa Tulaskar strongly supported Subodh and Sai. Chinmay Mandlekar has also played done really nice job even in the small role. His body language and dialog delivery is simply amazing.
Versatile Avdhoot Gupte has given good music. Especially the song ‘Kande-Pohe’ sung by Sunidhi Chauhan has appropriately used in whole movie. Camera, lights and especially cinematography are good but certainly far behind ‘Mukta Arts’ standard.
A credit must be given to Rajiv Patil for handling two different stories- ‘light comedy of Mulgi Dakhavne’(I swear I couldn’t find appropriate English word) and problems of pre-marital pregnancy. Audiences do not realize any jerk or it does not sound odd, when story moves from light comedy to serious issue.
Marathi cinema is getting globalize and producers are showing courage to handle sensitive issues. Dipti Talpade’s this movie is nice example of it. But the really nice thing is she never tried to show something ‘extra ordinary.’ She has successfully shown how serious topics can even be handled through perfect commercial film. And as even a common man can also enjoy this movie, seriousness of the issue can be delivered to higher no. of people. And that’s real success of ‘Sanai-Choughade.’
TUSHAR DALVI
If you have to identify few actors in Marathi film industry for their simplicity, modesty and commitment, Tushar Dalvi is certainly one of the few names. Having been brought up in a middle class Maharashtrian family in Mumbai and having done his post graduation in management, anybody would have expected him to take up an executive job and settle down in a typical Mumbai lifestyle. But, Tushar Dalvi opted for ‘acting’ as a full time career, taking the required risk with self confidence.
Having been in this field now for a little more than ten years, he seems to have established himself as an actor on stage, TV and films, doing variety of roles. Even as an anchor for TV programmes in Hindi and Marathi, he has managed his job very well. Today, Tushar is in demand as an actor, whether it is in television serials or films. There are tailor made roles suited to his personality. Take for example the role of eldest son with slight grey shade in ‘Anolkhe Hey Ghar Majhe’ who revolts against his father’ then playing the conservative husband of Saraswati (Renuka Shahane) in ‘Rita’ and now playing the caring husband of Bhargavi Chirmule, in popular TV serial ‘Anubandh'; Tushar is visibly in limelight. MMW caught up with Tushar on the sets of ‘Anubandh’ in Mumbai. Excerpts from an interview :
Q: How were you attracted to this field of acting ?
A: During my college days, I used to take part in Inter-collegiate drama competitions and also performed at the state level meets. Those days , I was more into experimental plays and performed on stage as a hobby, besides managing my studies. But, when I was about to finish my post graduation in Management and was doing my project work with a foreign bank, I made up my mind to take up acting as my profession.
Q: Was there any kind of opposition to your decision from family ?
A: Yes, like any other sensible parents, they too didn’t like my decision. But, they were not totally opposed to it. After marriage, my wife Malavika, who is a chartered accountant, also

offered her moral support to my decision and with the grace of God, I didn’t have to struggle much. I am thankful to my parents and wife for endorsing my decision. It was like getting a rubber stamp of approval.
Q: Haven’t you been typecast as a regular choice of husband, in all those women centric serial or films ?
A: No, I don’t think so. May be those serials and films you are referring to, were women centric, but they always provided me enough of scope to perform my best. Take for example Mrs. Madhuri Dixit serial. At a particular stage, the viewers started identifying the serial as Mr. Madhuri Dixit.
Q: How do you look at the change that is observed in Marathi films during the past few years ?
A: It is the change for good. The traditional comedy has been taken over by strong script oriented films. ‘Shwaas’ has shown the way and since then even the audience taste has changed. Even technically, the films are far superior now. You can now compare them with any good Hindi film. One more advantage is with the entry of bigwigs in distribution circle. People like Subhash Ghai, Zee Network and iDream productions have come forward to distribute marathi films and this has helped a lot. At a particular point, few years ago there was a bad patch with hardly 25 – 30 marathi films produced in a year, but now, you find at least one or two films released every week.
Q: Do you observe new audience for Marathi films ?
A: Yes, with the multiplexes releasing the Marathi films, surely you will have audience from different segment. With English sub-titles, even the non-maharashtrian people are becoming a part of the audience. The films like ‘Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy’ and some of the latest films in 2009 have proved it.
Q: Being a management graduate, are there any future plans to launch your own production ?
A: Every person in this field has that dream; but I don’t want to say anything at present. I did have some experience of managing production in the recent past; but to own my production, I think only time will decide. There are certain things in life, which are acquired at appropriate time and you have to wait for it.
Q: How much are you influenced by people around you in this profession ?
A: There are all sorts of people with whom I have interacted so far. Some of them are very good human beings and not so good actors. At the same time, there are very good actors who are not so good in real life. But, I always believed in learning good things from them, be it their acting skills while performing or their nice behaviour in real life.
