It contains a seed of a plant inside. Daily you have to water for 15 days, when a little plant grows from it. I liked this idea. Every good thing begins at home.” says Spruha Joshi.

In the past, through films like Gulzar’s ‘Koshish’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s ‘Khamoshi’ we have seen the struggle of speech and hearing impaired parents, while communicating with their child . Similarly in Marathi film like Samruddhi Porey‘s ‘Mala Aai Vhaychay’ we saw the problems faced by a surrogate mother, when after taking care of the child , the absconding Mother suddenly comes to take the possession of the child. The film had also shown the story in legal and emotional perspective of who should the child be with.

Now, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt presented and Raj R Gupta directed latest Marathi film Baba, we find a speech and hearing impaired poor village couple Madhav( Deepak Dobriyal) & Anandi ( Nandita Patkar) taking unconditional charge of a three day old illegitimate child born to an unmarried woman Pallavi( Spruha Joshi) , whose father refuses to accept the child.

The poor couple living in a remote village make all the efforts to offer love and affection to the child named Shankar ( Aryan Menghji) for eight long 8 years. Though the child can hear, he cannot speak, obviously because of the environment around him. When after eight years, the real mother returns with her husband Raajan ( Abhijit Khandkekar) after four years of their marriage, to claim the child, Madhav and Anandi are dragged into court by their lawyer Mr. Sapre ( Shailesh Datar) to prove their claim right. So, the Public Prosecutor Mr. Madke ( Jayant Gadekar) is provided to the poor couple. What transpires in the court of Judge ( Jaywant Wadkar) handling this legal battle and how the poor father Madhav makes desperate efforts to make his little son speak during the hearing period of the case, is an interesting emotion and humour filled story presented through the film’s screenplay.

What impresses the most, is the battle in the court, with Madhav and Anandi trying to prove their point through their family friend Tryambak(Chittaranjan Giri) who stammers while speaking. The director has very skilfully shown the lifestyle of Madhav and Anandi, while meeting the small demands of little Shankar. Moreover, the struggle of Madhav is clearly noticed through his efforts so as to not lose the custody of his beloved Shankar.

The film’s screenplay and presentation style seems to have been inspired by award winning Iranian Film maker Majid Majidi and therefore there is a lot of scope for this film to receive invitations from various international film festivals. The performances of the lead artistes are the best. They find very good support from the supporting artistes. The film has also received good technical support, with superb cinematography by Arjun Sorte, good art direction by Siddharth Tatooskar, Bhakti Tatooskar suitable sound design of Shijin Hutton- Abhishek Nair and perfect music and background music by the team of Rohan, Rohan & Susmit Limaye to create the perfect village backdrop during the period of 1990.

Actress Reema Lagoo has left this world two years ago, with her sad untimely demise. But, her last Marathi film ‘Home Sweet Home‘ in the lead role opposite another versatile actor Mohan Joshi has been released this Friday. The film also stars Spruha Joshi, Hrishikesh Joshi & Vibhavari Joshi in important roles. There is one more popular actress in this film, who makes her presence felt through her voice and she is Nirmiti Sawant. It would not be proper to say that Nirmiti has dubbed voice for late Reema, because she has worked very hard to move into Reema’s character of Shyamal Mahajan in this film. At the same time, she has matched very well with the late actress’ characteristics while delivering the dialogues in different moods. She has in fact paid best tributes to Reema through this film.

The theme of ‘Home Sweet Home‘ revolves around a senior citizen couple Shyamal and Vidydhar Mahajan( played by Reema Lagoo & Mohan Joshi) , living in their old traditional building at centrally located Dadar area in Mumbai. While Mr. Vidydhar spends his retired life enjoying his routine with morning exercises and walk in the company of his friends , Shyamal feels the pain of old age, while climbing stairs of their three storey building. She is also not happy with the presence of young Devika ( Spruha Joshi) in the house, because of her disorderliness. Devika is the daughter of Vidyadhar’s foster sister and lives in their house, as she is studying hospitality management. Suman ( Vibhavari Deshpande) is a domestic help visiting their house daily and Sopan( Hrishikesh Joshi) who also works as an estate agent operating from a neighbourhood Irani restaurant helping the couple to attend to their requirements at home.

One day a young couple visits the house of Mahajans to meet Sopan and misunderstand that he is dealing with the same house. Vidyadhar removes their misunderstanding but having come to know that their flat could be sold for Rs.3.5 Core, Shyamal is tempted to sell their house and shift to a tower in other area, with all the amenities including modern lifts. But, Vidyadhar doesn’t approve her plans initially. Shyamal tries to persuade him stating that they would save almost One Crore, which would fetch huge interest to meet their expenses and a tension future. The writer trio comprising of Hrishikesh Joshi, Vaibhav Joshi and Mugdha Godbole have developed this theme with their screenplay and dialogues to fill in some humour. Through the characters of Sopan, Devika and Suman they have tried to show effect on them of the couple’s decision. The story however takes a new turn in the climax.

The overall film has been good, but should have been much better with more humour filled happenings especially in the post interval session. Perhaps, the combination of three writers might have divided the scope of different characters. Nevertheless , the subject is closely related to every Maharashtrian family and especially the older couples living in the old buildings and dreaming for better facilities. It is rightly said that the grass is always seen greener on the other side. Performances of all the lead characters are very nice and that makes this film presentable. Not much scope for music in this film, except for one song, but the background music of Santosh Mulekar is good. The poetic compositions used during the beginning and towards the end are very meaningful. Last but not the least, this film is a biggest tribute to late Reema Lagoo.

We are all aware that Spruha Joshi married Varad Laghate a marketing professional five years ago, whom she knew 5 years before her marriage. Till now, we had not heard about Varad’s acting connection. But now, he will be seen making his debut through forthcoming Marathi film ‘Home Sweet Home‘ which also stars Spruha Joshi. By the way, this song is picturised in this film on Spruha and Varad has made guest appearance in this song.

Speaking about her husband’s debut Spruha said, “Varad has always been fooling with my film makers to create a role for himself in my film. One day, when he walked in during the song ‘Ikdun Tikade’ picturisation Hrishikesh seriously asked Varad whether he would do a small appearance in this song and that’s how his debut in my film was sheer coincidence. This song picturised on me, is rendered by Ajay Gogavale and being a great fan of him, I was as it is excited. And, this was doubled, with the inclusion of Varad into this song picturisation.”

Incidentally, the shooting of ‘Two States‘ was held in Varad’s office and in one of the scenes, he is noticed with his back towards the camera. So, can we say that Varad has already made his debut in a Bollywood film ?
