‘Vastraharan’ reaches 5000 mark
16th February 1980 was the day of Total Solar Eclipse . This day turned out to be the most auspicious day for the team of ‘Vastraharan’, as their inaugural stage show was scheduled on this day. With a good opening ‘Vastraharan’ could reach the figure of 175 within a year’s time, and the 175th show was held 26th January 1981 in the presence of late P.L. Deshpande, who was the special guest of honour. Soon, the group performed their 800th show on 26th January 1984.
It was during this show, as per the wish of Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar, a decision was taken to perform the next two shows in London. Lata Mangeshkar was made the President of this grand show and Mr. Vasantdada Patil , then Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Mr. Chagan Bhujbal, who was then Mayor of Mumbai, agreed to be the guests of honour for the grand shows. Many popular artistes had agreed to be part of the show. Due to some problems with Visa, the show looked impossible, but due to timely intervention of Balasaheb Thackeray, at least some of them could make it and show no’s 801 and 802 were successfully performed in London.
27th May 1985 turned out to be another landmark for ‘Vastraharan’ , as their 1000th show was held amidst big fanfare in the presence of Asha Bhonsale who was the chief guest. ‘Vastraharan’ continued with its popularity till year 2007 and on 15th April 2007, it turned out to be the last show of ‘Vastraharan’ in Damodar Hall, Parel, as star performer Macchindra Kambli passed away thereafter. However, in March 2009,’Vastraharan’ took a new birth, with Santosh Mayekar playing Tatya Sarpanch. It worked well for the revival of the play and soon ‘Vastraharan’ will reach the 5000 mark, when this grand show will be held on 21st November 2009, at 6pm in Shnmukhanand Hall, Mumbai. MMW wishes the makers of ‘Vastraharan’ a grand success, as this show will be paying tributes to Macchindra kambli.
