‘A’ and ‘B’ are friends from the same college for almost 4 years. ‘A’ loves ‘B’, but ‘B’ loves ‘C’. So, to make ‘B’ happy, ‘A’ goes out of his way to help ‘B’, to see that ‘B’ and ‘C’ are happily married. But, that doesn’t happen in traditional love stories. As, ‘B’ is meant for ‘A’ only. So, when ‘B’ comes to know about ‘C’ ditching her and knowing that ‘A’ really loved her through his heart; it is time for them to come together, in a typical climax. Haven’t we heard of such formula type stories in many Bollywood films? Now, through latest released Marathi film, ‘Pune Via Bihar’ we are subjected to see the repeat of that, with a touch of regional barriers.
Written by ‘Fu bai Fu’ TV show fame Sachin Mote and Sachin Goswami and directed by Sachin Goswami, ‘Pune Via Bihar’ is actually described as a love story of Abhijeet Bhosle (Umesh Kamat), a middle class Marathi student of engineering and Tara (Mrunmayee Deshpande), who is studying with him in Aurangabad. Tara is a daughter of Ramlal Yadav (Abhay Bhargava), a Central Minister from Bihar. Her father has fixed her marriage with a businessman’s natorious son, who is aspiring to become CM, with the blessings of Ramlal Yadav. Tara seeks help from Abhijeet, to run away from her home, as she wants to marry Baldev (Sunil Kumar), a final year student of MBBS. Abhijeet helps Tara to unite with Baldev, only because he is in love with her and wants to see her happy.
But, like a typical Bollywood film love triangle theme, Tara isn’t aware of his feelings for her. Abhijeet manages to release Tara from her house and brings Baldev and Tara to his home town Pune. Knowing about Tara escaping with Abhijeet, Ramlal asks Nishikant Nimbalkar (Bharat Jadhav) an encounter specialist from Maharashtra Police, to get Tara back to Bihar. Abhijeet seeks help from his father( Arun Nalawade) who is a Vada-pav vendor in Pune. When Nimbalkar reaches the venue of their marriage, Abhijeet and Tara run away from there. After this cat and mouse chase, finally Baldev is trapped by the Bihar Politician and is asked to return back, with a plan in his mind. In the meanwhile, Tara discovers Abhijeet’s love for her. All is well at the end, after witnessing a Bollywood style of climax.
From start till the end, the film does not look like a realistic gripping love story, as claimed by the film makers; for various reasons. Instead of showing a love story between a boy from Maharashtra and Girl from Bihar; the film goes on to display the love between the girl from Patna and the Boy from Ranchi. This goes on even in post interval session. It is only when, the girl tries to commit suicide, after disappearance of Baldev; that she comes to know about Abhijeet’s true feelings for her. In spite of that, she agrees to return to her home state with Baldev, who returns back. But, as we notice in majority of such love stories; there is always a last chance for the hero. And, that happens in the case of Abhijeet and Tara. The hero goes all the way to Bihar and dares to challenge the strong politician and his security, to marry Tara. ‘Everything is fair in love and war’ and that is what we witness at the end.
There are many illogical happenings in the film; such as travelling from Pune to Bihar and back by road, looks like travelling between Aurangabad and Pune. It is that easy for Abhijeet and his group and Tara’s father and brother; except for the last journey of Abhijeet by air. Then, Abhijeet’s college friends dodging and fighting with Encounter Specialist Nimbalkar and his two strong assistants, looks like a fight among their college colleagues. Even the chase scenes, where Nimbalkar and his men following Abhijeet and his group, looks like a humour filled chase noticed in comedy films. Also, Tara’s brother arriving in his car from Bihar with his goons and beating up Abhijeet’s father in his home town, looks like a typical Bollywood style action scene. At the same time, Abhijeet’s two friends stopping the mob from Bihar, entering a temple premises in their home state, in climax; looks unrealistic.
The film, however scores on account of the performances by few artistes. Both Umesh kamat and Mrunmayee Deshpande have given their best, through their respective roles. They look a perfect match for each other. Mrunmayee in particular, looks pretty good, with her mod looks. Unfortunately, it is all one sided love for the hero, almost in 75% length of this 133 mins long film. The love between two Biharis, has been stretched too long, with Abhijeet being just a mute witness to that. His character of Abhijeet looks confused, in major part of the film. In the role of PSI Nimbalkar, Bharat Jadhav suits well, but even his character looks confused on few occasions. Arun Nalawade, who has limited scope, however makes his presence felt, with his finest performance. Bhalchandra kadam and Kishori Ambiye have very limited scope, through the only wonderful musical song, in this film.
Abhijeet and Tara’s college friends have offered good support through their natural performances in this film, besides few artistes from Bihar. There is nothing much noticed in the performance of Sunil Tiwari, who has been projected as Baldev Thakur, the boy friend of Tara. Except for being at her side in few romantic scenes and few confused scenes; he is just shown by her side, in almost more than 60% of the film. And that has failed to create the desired impact of the so called love story between Abhijeet and Tara. There were lot of expectations from this film, to be an intense love story, from both the sides; depicting the culture of both the places. But, that does not happen much. Only the item song and the Fisher folk’s song, represent the culture.
At a time, when Marathi films are handling ‘out of the box’ themes; this borrowed Bollywood formula, offers a typical love triangle. Just check, whether you find any similarity with Bollywood film ‘Rangrezz’ which was also adaptation of a Tamil film. Or does it resemble with the plot of any other Bollywood film? However, Cinematography by Raja Satankar and Art Direction by Santosh Phutane are two worth appreciating factors . Music by Amir Hadkar sounds good for two songs. ‘Pune Via Bihar’ is just another love story, following the Bollywood path.
‘Aamhi Chmakte Taare’ – shows the way to shine in darkness
Rating: ★★ ½
Banner: Sainath Chitra Pictures. Producer:Deepak S Choudhary, Prakash A. Jadhav Director:Prakash jadhav Music:Shreerang Aras Camera:Unmesh Kabare Cast: Bharat Jadhav, Prasad Oak, Nisha Parulekar, Reema Lagoo, Mr. Sachin Pilgaonkar, Manasi Magikar, Anand Abhyankar, Sneha Raikar, Nirmala Kotnis, Sanjay Desai, Satish Pulekar, Yogesh Mahajan and child artiste Indrajeet More. Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
The best way to defeat darkness is to display the brighter side of yourself. Latest released Marathi film ‘Aamhi Chamakte Taare’ deals with one such social issue, which is so relevant today, to create awareness in the society. The film revolves around a 4th standard student Sachin( Indrajeet More) , who is adopted by a well to do couple- Sameer and Sonali ( Prasad Oak & Nisha Parulekar). It so happens that five years after their marriage, the happily married couple come to know that Sonali cannot give birth to a child. So, on the advice of a family friend and neighbor, Dr. Vinay( Yogesh Mahajan) who is a Gynecologist, they adopt a few months old child; whose parents have passed away. When this bright boy Sachin, while studying in 4th standard in a good school from Mumbai, faints on two occasions; he is tested +ve for HIV during investigations. The parents hide this reality from the boy and his old grandparents.
The trouble begins when during the annual medical camp in his school, the parents are called by the school principal( Reema Lagoo) to inform the parents, who are already aware of the ailment of Sachin. Though the principal, the class teacher and the School Peon – Ganpat mama are sympathetic towards the child and prefer to remain silent on this issue; the news leaks through other teaching staff. The parents of other children then object to Sachin’s presence in school.
The little child, who is looking for friends, is then admitted to a special school for such children, where he finds real happiness. Through this school, he takes part in the Inter School Music competition hosted by his previous school; where he wins the hearts of all his old friends, including the Judge of the competition Mr. Sachin Pilgaonkar Mr. Sachin Pilgaonkar. The film’s story which is originally written by Anant Sutar has been expanded by Deepak S Chaudhary on the direction of Editing specialist Prakash Jadhav.
The well presented screenplay of this film, goes on to convey a timely message to the society, to change their outlook towards such HIV affected children. Meaningful lyrics, supported by good music from Shrirang Aras, makes this film musical, besides its thought provoking subject. Child artist Indrajeet More, who plays the role of little Sachin, has played his role remarkably well. Prasad Oak and Nisha Parulekar play perfect understanding parents. Both of them have expressed their emotions clearly, through their spontaneous expressions, with every scene they have faced.
The film is a tribute to Anand Abhyankar, who passed away recently, in an unfortunate car accident. In the role of a concerned and caring grandfather, he has clearly displayed that the Marathi film industry has lost a talented actor. In fact, the very first scene of the film, opens with him. Manasi Magikar supports well as his wife. In the role of Principal, Reema Lagoo does well, while Sneha Raikar, the popular kind hearted Mother and Mother in law of Marathi small screen, plays the role of an encouraging class teacher with ease. In the character of Ganpat mama, the school peon, Bharat Jadhav impresses in all those emotion filled scenes. Others in the supporting cast, including a big team of children, have given natural performances.
Director himself being an editor, the film’s climax has been restricted to minimum time to avoid this otherwise time consuming competition. He has rather focused his attention more on the main subject. The only drawback is one song picturised on the family doctor- friend and his wife in the beginning of the film, which looks inappropriate. Otherwise, the film has succeeded in educating the masses through its sensible subject.

We have seen Bollywood inspired by Tollywood or Mollywood and vice versa. But, we have seen some of our Marathi films only inspired by Bollywood. When they saw success of 3 Idiots, they thought of making 4 Idiots. Why can’t our Marathi films have their own originality? And there is already a film titled ‘4 Idiots’ in the making, in Mollywood. However, this Marathi film ‘4 idiots’, has nothing to do with the script of 3 Idiots, but has some relevance to the style of Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra, with a touch of David Dhavan. . It is a tale of 4 friends – Bunty( Bharat Jadhav) , Qayuum( Siddharth Jadhav) , Kashi( Newcomer Swapnil Joshi) and Nagya( Guru Anand- the producer of this film) from Mumbai, who help each other in the time of crisis.
Qayuum is not steady with his job and Bunty is a pickpocket. Kashi is an Air conditioner Mechanic and a follower of a Bhondu Baba; while Nagya is a driver, who is dreaming of going to USA. When Qayuum’s mother is seriously ill and is to be operated upon , the other three friends raise money out of their savings and by selling their belongings. Bunty also manages a sizable amount, which he claims to have stolen from a non occupied house. When all of them fail in their attempt to raise enough money for their new lifestyle, Bunty comes up with a plan of bank robbery. Initially, the other three friends are reluctant; but, when they find that it is the best way of earning quick money, without killing anyone, they join Bunty’s plan.
In the pre interval session, the film simply drags on to explain the background of each one of them and in showing the strong bonding of their friendship. But, in the post interval session, the film actually takes momentum, when we find a group of terrorists also entering the bank premises, almost coinciding with the visit of these four idiots. About 70 people are trapped inside the bank as hostages, including the bank’s staff, visiting customers and the 4 idiots.
The terrorists are looking for one Salma and her locker keys. They start searching for the lady and her locker keys. The terrorists then enter a deal with Bunty, to identify Salma.. Surprisingly, the ‘Azad kashmir’ terrorists speak in Marathi and claim to have learned Marathi for the past three years of their presence in Maharashtra. They are led by their leader, who demands the release of their chief from the jail, in return of hostages. With few twists and turns in the climax, we find the 4 idiots taking on the Four terrorists and coming out victorious. Each one of them learn a lesson and after three years, we find them engaged in their work of interest.
‘4 Idiots’ is purely an action comedy with nothing new in the script, except for the plot in the concluding session, dealing with the terrorists. The screenplay is good only in the concluding part. However, the dialogues by Prakash Bhagwat are hard hitting, when they are uttered at Politicians and the terrorists. The happenings in Politics, the pressure on Police by the Home Minister, the helpless attitude of home minister, the arrogance and selfishness of opposition Minister, whose daughter is trapped inside the bank, have been well presented. Music by Mayuresh Pai is just fine. The item number performed by Aarti Siolanki looks very odd. But, the background music by Salil Amrute is impressive. Raja Phadtare’s cinematography is good.
As a director, Milind Arun Kawade shows his strengths in post interval session, when he has tried to hold the audience to their seats. In the pre interval stage, there are unnecessary cheap jokes used as source of entertainment. Bharat and Siddharthg Jadhav play their respective roles almost on the style of Ashok Saraf and Laxmikant Berde. Producer Guru Anand has tried to fulfill his wish as a supporting actor with better scope, in the role of Nagya and has done well. In the role of Kashi, newcomer Swapnil Joshi is just fine in the company of 4 idiots in this film.
The females in this film have no scope at all. Vishakha Subhedar appears as kashis’s sister for a scene or two, while Siya Patil and Mrunalini Jambhale have been used as show pieces in the group trapped inside the bank. One doesn’t know, why did they accept such roles? Vaibhav Mangale is impressive in his role. He stands a chance to get offers from Bollywood, after this performance. There is a big crowd of supporting cast to create an impact of the sensational event occurring post interval, covered on television as breaking news! The effort of the film maker is good; but, the film does leave few drawbacks.
‘No Entry’ entertains; but, lacks Marathi touch
Rating: 2.5
Banner: Underground Films Pvt. Ltd. Producer: Premnath Rajagopalan, Nikhil Saini. Director: Ankush Choudhary Lyrics: Guru Thakur Music: Nakash – Sargam Cast: Bharat Jadhav, Kranti Redkar, Ankush Choudhary, Saie Tamhankar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Manava Naik, Sai Lokur, Paddy (Pandharinath Kamble) Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Well, we are all aware that new Marathi film ‘No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey’ is a remake of popular Hindi comedy ‘No Entry’. But, while making this film in Marathi, the entire film has been copied scene to scene, instead of offering it a Marathi touch. As a result, it has failed to hold the audience for entire 163 minute show on the screen. Nevertheless, being a sit- com, the film has succeeded in offering the expected entertainment through good performances coming from all the seven important artistes in the film.
The original film had succeeded in creating laughter, because the theme was new to the audience. Moreover, in Maharashtra most of the Marathi film goers watch Hindi films. Even if they haven’t watched this original film in theatres, they must have surely watched it on their TV screens and that too in repeat runs. All that was expected was a Marathi touch to this theme; but, it has gone the Bollywood way, even to the extent of retaining the names of all the characters. If they could change the name of MLA, why couldn’t they find suitable names for seven important characters ?
When we see some of the remakes of South films in Hindi, these original films are not watched by majority of the cine goers from places other than south region. And hence, such films whether action or comedy, turn out to be successful in North India including Maharashtra. But, same is not the case, with remake of Hindi film in Marathi. It may be kept in mind that about 50 % of the Hindi film’s business is from Maharashtra.
Now, the million dollar question still remains to be answered is, whether a remake of popular Hindi comedy film and that too with predictable sequences, will be accepted in Marathi ? Let, the people of Maharashtra decide the fate of this film. The opening day, witnessed very poor response at a multiplex in the suburbs. Now, the weekend collections will decide the success of this film.
Looking at the efforts put in, it may be mentioned that the film has been shot with the high quality standard observed in big budget Hindi cinema,, with good camera work by Arwind Soni and perfect music by Nakash-Sargam. The selection of locations are good, including picturesque Goa. Even the titles of the film have been presented well. But, there seemed to be some budgeting on costumes of the artistes and the dancers in the song sequences. In the case of Sai Tamhankar, who played an important character of Bobby, there wasn’t much issue of costumes, as the film has been focused on her. She is the centre of attraction in this film. And, she has lived up to the expectations of the film maker. One can say that she has offered more than what Bipasha could offer in the original, as far as glamour is concerned.
Looking at the performances of others, both Bharat Jadhav as Kishan and Kranti Redkar as Kajal match well in their respective roles, with their perfect timing for comedy. Aniket Vishwasrao as Shekhar gets a kind of role, which has tested his strengths in comedy sequences. And he has done extremely well. Manwa Naik playing Sanjana also supports well as his partner. Both Ankush Choudhary (Prem) and Sai Lokur (his wife Pooja) have limited scope, especially after interval, but they too have done well. Paddy kamble is just fine as Bobby’s bodyguard. Anant Jog is good as fun loving MLA. Viju Khote does well in the small role, he has to his share.
As predicted, this film is a musical sitcom with good performances. But, it has certainly failed to offer the Marathi feel to the characters.

‘Kaay Karu? Na Kasa Karu !’- Just another average comedy
Rating: na
Presenter: G V Films, Balgiri Director: Vinay E Laad Story: Vinay E Laad Screenplay: Vinay E Laad Dialogues: Sanjay Belose Cinematographer: Anil Khandekar Music: Nishikant Sadafule Art: Rashid Rangrez Cast: Bharat Jadhav, Deepali Sayyed, Pushkar Shrotri, Aditi Sarangdhar, Vijay Chavhan, Uma Sardeshmukh, Jyoti Joshi, Ashok Shinde, Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
You never know, when and how our Marathi film makers would get inspired to make comedy films on the lines of some old Bollywood movies. Perhaps, watching those repeat runs of David Dhavan films starring Govinda and Sanjay Dutt on television, might have influenced director Vinay Laad to write the story of this Marathi film ‘Kaay karu? Na Kasa karu!’ starring Bharat Jadhav and Pushkar Shrotri in the lead. Only changes he made, by replacing Jay Paaji and Veeru Paaji with Vijay and Ajay; as otherwise both are shown as con men, in search of easy money and accommodation.
Vijay feels that he can compose music while Ajay, who sells ayurvedic jadi butti, poses himself as a doctor owning a hospital. So, they play pranks on the lines of what Govinda and Sanjay Dutt did in either ‘Jodi No. 1′, ‘Haseena Maan Jayegi’, or ‘Ek aur Ek Gyarah’. If that was not enough, they also borrow few ideas from Harmesh Malhotra’s Bollywood films of 90s.
With few changes here and there, the plot of ‘Kaay Karu? Na Kasa Karu!’ begins with two close friends – Vijay (Bharat Jadhav) and Ajay (Pushkar Shrotri), who are shown literally on the roads in the beginning of the film, after being shown the door by their landlord. They meet their common friend Kamlya (Kamlakar Satpute) who is influenced by Mr. Bachchan and keeps on overdoing his past film acts uttering Hindi dialogues, more than required to create humour.
Kamlya introduces his two friends to a Watchman of a bungalow (Vijay Chavan), who is guarding his Owner’s bungalow for a period of six months, since the owner is away. In the meanwhile the watchman’s two daughters Nisha (Deepali Sayyed) and Usha (Aditi Sarangdhar) also manage to enjoy the luxury of this bungalow. When Kamlya introduces Vijay and Ajay as an upcoming Music director and a doctor owning hospital respectively, the girls are impressed by their status and fall in love with them, in the first meeting itself. Their mother (Uma Sardeshmukh) is not very happy with their association with strangers, but the father plans
something big; and soon gets his both the daughters married to them.
When, it is disclosed that the two young men are fraud, he repents. But, destiny makes them extra smart and they manage Rs.5 cores, after they save life of a rich man about to commit suicide. Then begins the naughty games of two boys, to teach a lesson to their demanding wives. Finally, it’s happy ending in the climax. There is no doubt that the chemistry between the two couples works well; but the outdated song sequences and not so appealing music do not go well with the screenplay.
All the four leading artistes have given their best, as expected. Ashok Shinde plays an awkward looking role, where he has no scope; but only to expose his skin affected face and receiving insults from Deepali. Vijay Chavhan and Uma Sardeshmukh play the parents convincingly. Few dialogues are well written by Sanjay Belose; but some of them are repeated by Kamlakar Satpute – the character of Kamlya, while performing his mimicry and by Deepali while humiliating Ashok Shinde. There are no twists and turns in the screenplay, except for the routine comedy on one given plot. Anil Khandekar’s photography is good, but there is nothing special in the choreography of Dilip Mistry. In the process, Writer- Director Vinay Laad has offered just another average entertaining Marathi comedy film.
