Dilip Prabhavalkar
Biography / Profile:
- Born : 4 August
- Occupation : Actor
Dilip Prabhavalkar is one of the finest artistes having an experienced over period of 30 years in the field of experimental stage to professional Marathi theatre, television serials and films in various languages.
Talking about academicals achievement he has gained a Master’s degree in Biophysics and a diploma from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, before working for a pharmaceutical company and as a partner in a video production unit. During this period, he performed as an actor in several children’s plays and experimental plays staged at Chhabildas. His first major performance was in ‘Lobh Nasava Hi Vinanti‘ a play written by Vijay Tendulkar.
In children’s and amateur theatre, Prabhavalkar was associated with Ratnakar Matkari’s group and performed in all the plays staged by the troupe. His performances in Prem Kahani and Vidur in Aranyak which got awarded at the Maharashtra State Drama Festival were unique because of his systematic and studied approach to the role, the understanding of the character he had to play and his spontaneity. His brilliant performance as ‘The Witch‘ in ‘Albatya Galbatya‘ is still remembered by those who saw it then.
From the experimental stage, Prabhavalkar moved to the professional stage in 1976, and since then has given several brilliant performances in a variety of plays of different categories – from slapstick to light comedy, family drama and melodrama, to serious discussion plays dealing with contemporary issues. To name a few no one cant forget Double role as Anna and the mother-in-law in Pradeep Dalvi’s farce ‘Vasuchi Sasu‘ or the lovable senile Nana of the old lonely couple in Jaywant Dalvi’s ‘Sandhyachhaya‘.
But the milestone was set in Marathi theatre by six different characterizations in ‘Hasvaphasvi‘ – a laugh riot corral and directed by Prabhavalkar himself. The characters are been appreciated by all types of audiences with 712 performances so far.
In 1977-79 his career took a turn and made him a household name because of his role as Chimanrao in the television serial ‘Chimanrao Gundyabhau‘ based on a series of short stories by C.V. Joshi.
A serious actor by nature he has an attitude of making an in-depth study of the character he wants to portray and then taking pains to build up each part of the character systematically. That’s why in 1992 his work was well appreciated by Maharashtra State award for best actor for his portrayal of a mentally retarded boy in the film ‘Chaukat Raja‘.
He possesses the quality of good observation. He gets the largest audiences and from all strata of society- rural, urban, young, old, labourers, intellectuals. Prabhavalkar has been honoured with many, Natyadarpan and Natya Parishad awards for his work in Theatre.
Dilip Prabhavalkar achieved nation-wide recognition when he portrayed the role of Mahatma Gandhi in 2006 Bollywood movie ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai‘.The film created a nation-wide awareness of Gandhian thoughts through this film.He reprised his role in Telugu remake of this movie called ‘Shankar Dada Zindabad‘. No one can forget his acting in a Marathi TV Serial ‘Shreeyut Gangadhar Tipare‘, based on a novel penned by himself.
Prabhavalkar writing is remarkable for its wit and deft comic touches and ironic satirical attitude. This stance is reflected in his newspaper column writing where he deals with the issues around, including political ones, in a humorous manner, yet exposing the hypocrisy of politicians. Three of his nine books published so far- ‘Googly‘, ‘Hasgat‘ and ‘Kagdi Baan‘- have won literary awards.
Even though famous actor he is very down to earth and a socially conscious personality who is always ready to give his share for a good cause. He has been working for the Poona Blind Men’s Association and has helped them by lending his voice to prepare a number of audio cassettes for their ‘Talking Book Libraries’. He has also been associated with Kamayani, the institution working for mentally retarded children. The ties that he developed with them at the time of ‘Chaukat Raja‘ have become permanent and he is always ready to help them in any way he can. Needless to say, Prabhavalkar does all that without accepting any remuneration – ‘an actor must give back to society at least a part of what he achieves with the help of the society’ is his attitude.

Interview(s):
‘Slambook’ to present one more adolescent love story
It is very common in film industry, when a particular genre film attains success, fiscally; a lot of copy-cats follow the same theme. A few years ago, a Ravi Jadhav directed marathi movie ‘Time Pass’, which dealt with adolescent love birds, fared astoundingly well at booking office. Now, a new upcoming Marathi movie ‘Slambook’ also deals with adolescent love. Trailer of the film, which was launched recently, in Mumbai, also gives an impression of copy-paste of TP. Even the lead pair is coincidentally a lookalike of ‘Time Pass’.
But, the director of the film, Ruturaj Dhalgade, has categorically denied it . According to him, it’s a story of adolescent lovers, which goes beyond all such previous film on teenage love . It deals with the time span between coin-box telephone and cell-phone and shows how the internet craziness adversely affects today’s youth.
With first look, music of this film was also released. ‘Slambook’ music is composed by seven composers, viz. Shubhankar, Vishal, Rasik, Sidhaan, Sagar, Prashat and Jagdish and playback is by Sonia Mundhe, Shubhankar, Rasik Metangale, Hrishikesh Ranade. Versatile super singer Vaishali Samant has also lent her voice for ‘Morya’ song, which is picturised on Shruti Marathe.
Dilip Prabhavalkar and Kushal Badrike, who are a part of the cast were present at the function. ‘Slambook’ is produced by Dhalgade, Ruturaj Dhalgade and co-produced by Chhaya Mhatre, Rohit Mhatre and the cast comprises of Dilip Prabhavalkar, Usha Nadkarni, Mangesh Desai, Madhavi Soman, Kushal Badrike, Supriya Pathare, Abhijit Chavan, Yogesh Shirsat, Shruti Marathe and a new lead pair Shantanu Ranade and Ritika Shrotri.
The film will be released on 21st August 2015.

‘Nagrik’ has a strong subject of investigative journalism
Journalism is considered as the fourth estate of a democratic society. This term was earlier used mainly for print media. The invasion of modern technology saw rise of electronic media and digital media, which has also become part of the fourth estate. This fourth estate, though dreaded by inactive politicians, corrupt ‘babus’ and businessmen, tries to keep check on wrongdoings in the society, apart from hailing the good deeds.
A film fully dedicated to this profession, i.e. Journalism, is very rare, in Marathi cinema. But producer Aarti Sachin Chavan under the banner Sachi Entertainment is coming up with a new Marathi film Nagrik, the story of which has a major backdrop of investigative journalism. ‘Pen is mightier than sword’ is theme of the film which focuses on the political and social realities of the times, through the eyes of common man.. Nagrik, which is directed by Jayprad Desai, has already bagged a prestigious Maharashtra State Film Award for best cinematography (Devendra Golatkar).
Also it features in nominations for five categories of the state awards, i.e. Best Debut Director (Jaypraad Desai), Best Actor (Sachin Khedekar), Best Dialogues (Mahesh Keluskar), Best Lyricist (Sambhaji Bhagat) and Best Film. Nagrik has a strong star cast, comprising of Dilip Prabhavalkar, Dr Shriram Lagoo, Milind Soman, Sulabha Deshpande among others. The film is all set to release soon.

‘Viti Dandu’ – a weapon against ruthless torture
Rating: ★★★
Studio / Presenter: Ajay Devgn Films, Raj Radha Films Producer: Leena Deore Director: Ganesh Kadam Writer: Vikas Kadam Director of Photography: Shailesh Awasthi Music Director: Santosh Mulekar Cast: Dilip Prabhavalkar, Ravindra Mankani, Yatin Karyekar, Ashok Samarth, Mrunal Thakur, Nishant Bhavsar, Gowhar Khan, Shubhankar Atre, Radhika Deore Movie Review by: Keerti Kadam |
Winner of recently announced MarathiMovieWorld award for ‘Most Awaited Film’ category, ‘Viti Dandu’, is presented by Ajay Devgn Films and produced under the banner of Raj Radha Films by Leena Deore. Viti Dandu, which is an ancient Indian sport, possibly with origin over 2500 years ago,was a popular sports in India, till 60s and 70s.
The story (writtten by Vikas Kadam) of Viti Dandu is about affection between grandfather Daji and grandson Govind taking place in pre independence era, in a remotest village called Morgaon. Daji (Dilip Prabhavalkar) is a peace loving doting grandfather, always throwing protective wings around his grandson Govind (Nishant Bhavsar), mainly because his only son and daughter in law were killed by merciless British officials cruelly, for their involvement in India’s fight for freedom.
The grandfather bears villager’s taunts of being called ‘chamcha’ of Britishers, because he is worried about his grandson’s future in British Raj. Once, while visiting police station, Govind witnesses villagers getting thrashed by ‘Gora’ ( The name used by a revolutionary played by Ashok Samarth in the film,) and he keeps questioning Daji about it. To divert his mind Daji offers to play Viti Dandu with Govind, who loves playing that immensely. While playing, a strongly hit Viti hits a passerby on head, who happens to be the British officer, killer of Govind’s parents. The officer later dies, after suffering severe head injury, due to losing his balance after a hit. Daji panics and to save Govind from Britisher’s clutches, decides to run away, but seeing innocent villagers being beaten up blue and red, confesses to have committed that crime and gets himself jailed.
Govind unable to digest his grandfather being in jail, decides to rescue him with the help of his friends. They attack police officials with Viti Dandu, and are triumphant in the end ( ‘Bachha’ company will love it). Since it’s a pre independence era around 1943, revolutionary movement is also interwoven in the plot.
Director (Ganesh Kadam) has invested complete first half in environment creation and introductions of various characters. Even though having a thin storyline, the director has tried his best to present a sensible screenplay, till the climax of the film, which looks little filmy. The film has four songs and all of them are good, especially a Bharud song which is well composed (Santosh Mulekar), well choreographed, well photographed. Lyrics score points as they help in the storytelling. Background score excels and is effective without being imposing. Art director and costume department have been successful in creating the right time-period (pre-independence and now). DOP (Shailesh Awasthi) has done an amazing job and has beautifully captured the virgin rural beauty thus creating the right amount of required atmosphere.
Though the two main characters hog majority of the film space, there are presence-felt performances by others, like, Mrunal Thakur, Ravindra Mankani, Ashok Samarth. Yatin Karyekar is impactful in revolutionary’s role of Usmanbhai. Child actors Nishant Bhavsar, Shubhankar Atre and Radhika Devre has done a splendid job and wins hearts with his innocence. And, last but not the least, Dilip Prabhavalkar (winner of Best Actor award, announced by MarathiMovieWorld) has time and again been proving his versatility, doesn’t fail you this time too, showing different facets of the character with right amount of emotions.
All in all, a neat, clean movie, with picturesque locations and of course, Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn as presenter.
