Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Presenting comedy, through a film’s screenplay is not an easy task. Every director has his or her own ideas, when it comes to entertaining the audience non stop. Milind Arun kawade, is one such director in Marathi, who prefers to play safe, by presenting the ‘set formula’ of comedy films, every time. He tried the same in ‘Yedyanchi Jatra’ and in ‘4 idiots’. Surprisingly, such films are enjoyed by section of audience, who watch them, keeping their logical thinking aside. Now, through his new film ‘Just Gammat’, Milind Arun Kawade presents one such plot, to generate non stop humour.

Just Gammat, Smita Gondkar, Jitendra Joshi

Mohan (Sanjay Narvekar) and Ashok( Jitendra Joshi) are close childhood friends, who meet after many years, at a Pub. After exchanging pleasantries while consuming drinks, when they finally discuss the topic of their wives, both voice their feelings about the humiliation suffered by them. So, they chalk out a plan to get rid of them.  Mohan goes on a mission to kill Ashok’s wife Ashwini( Aditi Sarangdhar) , while Ashok enters Mohan’s house to eliminate Meera( Smita Gondkar).

Both Mohan and Ashok fail in their plan, as the writer director has other plans to introduce more characters to carry forward his film’s screenplay, with some humor filled sequences. So, we notice arrival of a mighty gangster (Deepak Shirke) always surrounded by his ruffians. He in turn deputes his hired assistants ( Vijay Patkar & Aarti Solanki) on the look out for the missing costly ornament. Then ,there is landlord style of Ashwini’s father, who with the help of his servants, is after the blood of Ashok, who according to him, has attempted to kill his daughter. Finally, it’s happy end in the climax, removing all misunderstandings.

In this film, it is only Sanjay Narvekar, who scores, with his natural performance. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get the required support from his co star Jitendra Joshi, who is not up to the mark. One expected Jitendra to do better than his previous wonderful performance in ‘Premasathi Coming Soon’. Was his performance overshadowed by Sanjay’s natural act? Anyway, talking about the two leading ladies in the film, Smita Gondkar finds a role most suited to display her fit and slim looks. Not much was expected from her, as her character was limited to display of glamour only. Even Aditi Sarangdhar doesn’t find much scope in this film, except for representing as Jitendra’s wife in the film.

Required support comes from character artistes like Vijay Patkar, Jaywant Wadkar, Aarti Solanki, Arun Kadam, Atul Todankar, Deepak Shirke and others. Heena Panchal presents one typical item song. The director seems to have given complete freedom to the artistes. But, he should have paid more attention on the dialogues . Anyway, if you are yet to recover from the dismal performance of Indian Cricket team in semi finals of World Cup, this film can help you to recover to a certain extent, provided, you keep aside logical thinking.

Jitendra Joshi – An Electrician turned Actor

Rahul Roy unveils the music of ‘Just Gammat’

Vijay Patkar, Sanjay Narvekar, Smita Gondkar, Just GammatToday, Modern day life has become a lot more stressful .It requires a stress-buster to cool the nerves. This is where, Humour in our films, play a pivotal role, to cure stress. One such stress-buster Marathi movie coming our way, is ‘Just Gammat’, presented by Sharadkumar Shrivastava and produced under the banner Silver Screen Entertainment by Seema Shrivastava. The music of the film was released recently, at Mumbai.

RJ Mayuresh Shirke, who anchored the event with ease, welcomed the guests and introduced director, Milind Arun Kavade and the musical team. Nitin Kumar Gupta, who is debuting as a music composer with this Marathi movie. Deepak Angevar, who has written the title song, appears twice in the movie ; has been rendered by Avadhoot Gupte , in two different styles. Mandar Cholkar has penned an item song using all liquor names. Heena Panchal, who has done an item number on ‘Bewda’ song was also called on stage. N K Gupta showcased the ‘virtual 3D girl’ (an animated version of an item girl, done @Russia) which they plan to upload sometime next month, just before the release .

Original ‘Aashiqui’ guy, Rahul Roy was the chief guest and unveiled the music of a ‘Just Gammat’. “I stay at Shivaji Park and am in touch with lots of Marathi film makers. In fact we want to rope in these talented people to Bollywood, but the trend seems to be the opposite. Lots of non-Marathi film-makers are getting attracted to Marathi films.” he said and continued “I was in the process of making a Marathi film, but unfortunately my director (Rajiv Patil) died untimely “.

The lead actor Sanjay Narvekar arrived late due to a stage play in distant suburbs of Mumbai. He narrated, how in an intoxicated state, two friends plan to kill each other each other’s wives and after getting sober the next morning; what ‘Gammat’ happens, is the one-line of the film story and he expressed the film to be a commercial success.

Arun Kadam, Vijay Patkar, Jaywant Wadkar and Smita Gondkar, who was looking stunning in a black mini, represented the cast. Apart from these actors, Aditi Sarangdhar, Jitendra Joshi, Atul Todankar, Sanjay Kulkarni, Aarti Solanki, Deepak Shirke are also part of the film.

‘Baji’ is a well presented film; but, too lengthy

Baji Marathi FIlm,

Director Nikhil Mahajan who made his debut as a director through a detective Marathi film ‘Pune 52′, now offers an action & mystery filled film ‘Baji’. The film is also a grand comeback for Shreyas Talpade into Marathi films after 8 years. But, as far as the screenplay of the film is concerned, it seems to be inspired by few Bollywood films like ‘Kaho na pyaar hai’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Ajooba’, ‘Shahenshah’ and ‘Krrish’. Writer- Director Nikhil Mahajan has paid more attention on making this film a technically superior film in Marathi.
The story of this film is set on the backdrop of a small village Shrirangpur in Maharashtra, which is supposed to be created by a king in 11th century. So, it’s all about the ‘hidden treasure’ in the village and a Superhero ‘Baji’, protecting the same from going into the hands of wrong people. Baji also comes to the rescue of villagers, whenever anybody is in trouble. There is a mystery behind this character of ‘Baji’, as he hasn’t appeared in the village for a long time. And that’s how the film begins, raising curiosity of the audience.
Dipu ( Shreyas Talpade) , who runs a grocery shop, keeps hearing the bravery acts of ‘Baji’ from his girlfriend Gouri ( Amruta Khanvilkar), who has been saved from a mishap by Baji. She is the only person from the village, who believes that Baji would return. Another young man from village, Martand ( Jitendra Joshi), turns greedy and tries to secretly search the hidden treasure. When Dipu comes to know about his plans, he opposes him; but, in the process, he is himself beaten up by Martand.
At the stroke of interval, we notice a twist in the screenplay. Post interval, we see a simple looking Dipu turning a brave man, thus coming to the rescue of villagers, who are used as slaves, by Martand to trace the hidden treasure in the village. So, it’s a straight fight between Martand v/s Dipu. But, Dipu’s mother( Ila Bhate) knows some secrets. The screenplay proceeds with action filled suspense, to see the end of wicked Martand, after a thrilling climax, shot on a running goods train.
In ‘Baji’ it is Shreyas & Shreyas all the way. With his variety of acting skills, he is impressive, from beginning till end. Amruta Khanvilkar has supported him well, as his leading lady in the film. In the entire film, she appears without make up, perhaps to meet the requirement of her village girl image. Jitendra Joshi as Martand, commits all heinous acts, in the post interval session. But, his character is shown cruel only through violence filled acts. There isn’t much scope for acting for him. In comparison, his portrayal of villain in recently released ‘Premasathi Coming Soon’ was much better.
The first half an hour of the film fails to take off with the story. A lot of time has been wasted in showing the friendship and intimacy among Shreyas, Amruta and child artiste Pushkar Lonarkar ( ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’ fame). But, once the film’s story takes off, it keeps the audience engaged, till the end. The new concept of showing the shadow fight has been used well, in one of the action scenes. The climax has been shot well, but for that the credit goes to action director Stunt Silva and the excellent camera work by Vasu Rane. There is one stunt scene performed by Shreyas to rescue a puppy dog from the roof top. He keeps calling him with the name of a top hero of Marathi film. And, this certainly was in a bad taste.
The sound design and background music is appealing enough, to create suitable ambience during important scenes. The fiery dialogues are appropriate; but, they haven’t been used well, to show the conflict between Dipu and Martand. However, the two folk songs are picturised well, with good music composition by Atif Afzal. In special appearance, Shruti Marathe does well, with her sizzling dance performance, in one of the songs. Nagraj Manjule is surprisingly endearing in the role of a Police officer. Good support comes from Priyadarshan Jadhav, Pushakar Lonarkar, Sandesh Kulkarni , Ila Bhate and others.
Produced by a big group of producers, comprising of Arun Rangachari, Vivek Rangachari , Amit Ahirrao, Suhrud Godbole, Deepti Talpade, Hrishikesh Kulkarni, & Nikhil Mahajan, ‘Baji’ is a well presented film, but is too extensive, in its 170 mins length. However, one can still enjoy this film, without any preconceived notion.

‘Rakhandaar’ says, “Yalkot Yalkot Jai Malhar….”

Rakhandaar Movie
Rating: ★★
Studio / Presenter: Surya Film Creation
Producer: Dr. Mrunalinni Patil
Director: Dr. Mrunalinni Patil
DOP: Jehangir Chowdhury
Music: Kanak Raj, Sameer Phaterpekar
Cast: Ajinkya Deo, Jitendra Joshi, Anuja Sathe, Satish Pulekar,
Ravindra Mahajani, Hansraj Jagtap, Anup Choudhary
Genre: Drama
Movie Review by:  Keerti Kadam

Surya Film Creation’s new Marathi movie ‘Rakhandaar’, which was in news recently, is releasing on 26th Sept ’14 all over Maharashtra. In this world, some feel that God is to be felt within, while the atheists question about existence of God. Producer, Director Dr. Mrunalinni Patil, has toyed with this idea, in her latest film ‘Raakhandaar’.

A simpleton, Sadanand Lokre (Jitendra Joshi), is an innocent person, who believes in helping his neighbours without any expectations. But, in the process, loses his job and starts working in his late father’s shop as a cobbler, with the only thought in his mind, ‘work is worship’. Khushaba (Ajinkya Deo), appears in the scene, as a villager with his special attire, and meets Sadanand, who realizes and believes that Khushaba is godly personality.

Ajinkya Deo

In comes, Australia returned Madhavi (Anuja Sathe), who falls in love with the innocence of Sadanand and they get married, defying Madhavi’s father’s wish of she getting married to the Manager in his office. Later, she gives birth to a son. Just before that Sadanand prays to God, for a son. But, unaware of her husband’s wish, Madhavi promises a return gift to God, that she shall return the same back to him.

There’s a villain in the form of Manager, (Anup Choudhary), who is bent upon marrying Madhavi, who tries, in vain, to spoil her marital bliss; with his childish acts. Khashaba – the Raakhandaar, of whom Sadanand & Madhavi’s son Chhota- Malhar (Master Shreeveer Kadam), also gets extremely fond of; affectionately calls him Devappa, who is always there to rescue our Sadanand whenever in trouble.

The story by Anand More, is a bit lengthy and screenplay also bit patchy. Some scenes erupt abruptly, without any connection to previous scene. Editing should have been handled a bit professionally. Jitendra Joshi does justice to Sadanand, with his innocent face and his couple of one-liners do collect laughter. Anuja Sathe has done very well, as bubbly as well as serious Madhavi and has good screen presence. Ajinkya Deo who plays Raakhandaar, looks handsome in this character and has done justice to his role. Music (Kanak Raj, Sameer Phaterpekar) is saving grace of the movie and filming of songs is very good. Background score of Sameer Phaterpekar, is apt.

Cinematographer Jehangir Choudhary is successful in capturing the required mood of the film. Director, Dr Mrunalinni Patil has tried to camouflage fiction with drama, with some philosophy thrown in. There’s always a next time. Jai Maharashtra. Jai Malhar…..Yalkot Yalkot Jai Malhar.

‘Hu Tu Tu’ offers average entertainment

Hututu movie
Rating: ★★ ½
Studio / Presenter: Harsh Films, Bhausaheb Bhoir
Producer: Harshavardhan Bhoir
Director: Kanchan Adhikari
Writer: Aashish Pathare
Cinematographer: Suresh Deshmane
Music: Anand Raj Anand
Cast: Ashok Saraf, Varsha Usgaonkar, Jitendra Joshi, Neha Pendse, Hemant Dhome, Manasi Joshi, Anant Jog and Sanjay Khapre, Atul Todankar, Pradeep Patwardhan
Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

After making three films with Makarand Anaspure, namely ‘Doghaat Tisra Aata Sagla Visara’ and ‘Baap Re Baap Dokyala Taap’ and ‘Tukya Tukavila Nagya Nachvila’, director Kanchan Adhikari has now directed the King of Comedy Ashok Saraf , in her latest released film ‘Hu Tu Tu’, produced by Harshavardhan Bhoir. For this film, she finds the story of Rajan Agarwal and screenplay & dialogues of Ashish Pathre almost going on the lines of some of the Bollywood comedy films.

So, you get the glimpse of Govinda-Chunkeyy Pandey starrer ‘Aankhen’ (except for the double roles), some of Sajnay Dutt-Govinda starrer films and a similar type of sequence on substitute mother from Ajay Deogan-Abhishek Bachchan film ‘Bol Bachchan’. And, if this borrowed recipe of Bollywood is now served to Marathi audience, it is only their choice, whether to appreciate this film or not. But, in the first half of the film, the plot just fails to pick up, as there are no major happenings in the screenplay. It is only at the stroke of interval that you realise that there is something left in the screenplay.

The post interval session and a twist after the item number has generated some interest for traditional comedy lovers, except for the climax, which again goes the Bollywood style of 80s. Music by Anand Raj Anand is average . It is only through the Hindi style item number, he has generated good music. Suresh Deshmane’s photography is neat and clean. But, the film certainly needed more editing from Anand Diwan , especially in the first half and initial part of second half. At a time when Marathi film lovers are used to watching 2 hour length film, the film’s stretch for 2 hours 25 mins, is felt little lengthy.
Ashok Saraf Varsha Usgaonkar, Hu Tu Tu
There is no point in revealing the story of this film, for obvious reason. But, Ashok Saraf who plays the central character in this film, finds one more meaty role in this film too, just following the success of ‘Aandhali Koshimbir’. And, he has played his character of a Businessman Dhanajay Dhanawade very well. In the roles of his two notorious sons Vaibhav & Aishwary, Jitendra Joshi and Hemant Dhome have genuinely tried to create humour in the company of their two girl friends Neha Pendse and Manasi Naik, who are sisters. But, the two girls find limited scope in this film, as the film belongs to Ashok Saraf. Offering a big surprise, Director Kanchan Adhikari finds herself playing the character of a Mother of these two sisters. And, she has done a good job. Playing Ms. Sadhana-a widow, she is also shown as the first love of Ashok Saraf, who in turn is required to marry another woman under strange circumstances.

The inclusion of characters like Hiral Seth and Ankush- the cunning nephew of Sadhana, are just namesake to represent two villains, played successfully by Anant Jog and Sanjay Khapre. Veteran director N.Chandra makes a surprise guest appearance in the initial scene of the film. But, the two renowned artistes-Varsha Usgaonkar and Atul Todankar have brought some life in the concluding part of this film, with their notable performances.

Having done two sensible films like ‘Manini’ and ‘Mokala Shwaas’, there were big hopes from Kanchan Adhikari; but, ‘Hu Tu Tu’ has turned out to be just an average comedy film. Through this film, she has just tried her best to create situation based comedy, with the available script. After all, this is not her own banner film.
