In our Marathi film industry, there are different types of subjects presented through films. Some are, sensible story based realistic films, including biopics, which are welcomed now days. Others are traditional comedy films. But, for the past few years, we are also finding total commercial entertainment based films, which offer a complete package, i.e. romance, action, emotion and music together. Latest released film ‘Mr. & Mrs. Sadachari’ falls in this last category. Being a remake of hit Kannada film ‘Mr. & Mrs. Ramchari’, Producer director Ashish Wagh has found a copy book recipe, for this Marathi version. He has however made few changes, to meet the requirement of Marathi audience.
Now days, there is a wave of ‘Superhero’ films in Marathi, with tall and handsome Ankush Choudhary showing the way, by tossing his opponents in the air, during action sequences, in films like ‘Dagadi Chawl’ and ‘Guru’. Earlier, we had also seen Riteish Deshmukh doing the same stunts in ‘Lai Bhari’ and another angry young man Gashmir Mahajani doing it in ‘Carry On Maratha’. And now, we have one more superhero adding to this list. He is ‘Shiva’ played by upcoming Marathi actor Vaibhav Tatwawdi. Being blessed with good height and perfect physique, he too has proved in ‘Mr. & Mrs. Sadachari’ that he has stronger arms to take on six tough guys at a time.
The story of ‘Mr.& Mrs. Sadachari’ is about this Superhero Shiva( Vaibhav Tatwawdi) who is just an average student in his college but has a big heart, to help all those in trouble, be it, helping them, going out of his way or beating up those harassing the girls. Above all, he gets all his strength from great Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whom he adores through his heart. One day, he rescues beautiful Gargi, who is about to be molested by a self styled baddie ( Vijay Andalkar) in the college. Gargi is highly impressed by the guts shown by Shiva and there is love at first sight, for both of them. But, their love doesn’t last for long, due to some mix up and they break- up. At this stage, the story of this film, almost goes on the lines of recently released film ‘Friends’. And, we feel, as if we are watching another ‘Friends’. But, in the post interval stage, we notice the high emotion filled drama, between father( Mohan Joshi) and son Shiva. Taking few twists and turns, in the concluding part of the film, we finally see Shiva and Gargi together, in a typical Bollywood style climax.
The lead pair of Vaibhav and Prathana have a good chemistry between them and therefore they suit well, in all their romantic and dispute scenes. There are some emotion filled scenes of Vaibhav with his screen father Mohan Joshi too and the talented actor has proved his ability in this area also. Watch that scene, when his father forces him to show his dance skills, late in the midnight hours. As an actor, Vaibhav has been given enough scope to show his all round skills, in this film. Good support comes from his co star Prathana Behere and other supporting senior artistes Mohan Joshi and Pradeep Velankar.
Among the youngsters, Prasad Javade , Anuja Sathe Gokhale & Uday Nene look confident in their respective roles. Vijay Andalkar has been wasted as a typical villain of 70s and 80s bollywood films, who keeps on appearing again and again, in spite of being beaten up badly, by the hero, every time. The film has very good music composed by Pankaj Padghan & V.Harikrishna. Even the songs of the film are either shot with good choreography with colourful costumes or at beautiful locations including Mauritius with good photography by Balaji Ranga . Some of the dialogues in the film are well written, to suit the taste of Marathi audience .
There are few illogical sequences and also few predictable happenings seen in this film; but we often notice them in many bollywood successful commercial films. More than required time, has also been wasted in showing smoking and drinking scenes, with statutory warning flashed at the bottom of the screen. But, all in all , ‘Mr.& Mrs. Sadachari’ offer a perfect south recipe of entertainment in Marathi. Those who love such types of action films, combined with romance, emotion and music, may like this film.

‘Mee Aani U’ presents a different love story without a grip
Rating: ★★★
Studio: Lohiaas Entertainment, Ashtvinayk Media And Entertainment. Producer, Director: Nitin kamble. Writers: Sangram Patil, Arvind Jagtap Editor: na Cinematographer: na Cast: Bhushan Pradhan, Sai Lokur, Mohan Joshi, Sayaji Shinde, Ujwala Jog.. Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
We have seen many Bollywood action films inspired by Hollywood films; but, we have not seen much on Hollywood’s romantic comedy with a touch of fantasy. However, director Nitin kamble has attempted one such experiment in the latest released Marathi film ‘Mee Aani U’. Inspired by Hollywood’s 2005 film ‘Just Like Heaven’ which was actually based on original novel ‘If only it were true'; director Nitin kamble has given a different treatment, to target the young Marathi audience.
So, ‘Mee Aani U’ begins very artistically with the backdrop of animated effects and Mangesh Desai playing the narrator of this fantasy based romantic love story of happy go lucky Abhishek Chaudhary ( Bhushan Pradhan) and aspiring Journalist Ira Kurundkar ( Sai Lokur). So, it’s ‘Play Love all’ through facebook chatting, where Abhishek poses himself as Che Guevara, while Ira who uses her real name, but displays the photo of Rani Mukherjee on her timeline. Both of them agree to meet each other in person, in their hometown Kolhapur. But, before that they do come across each other at a TV channel’s office; where Abhishek grabs the job already offered to Ira, by adopting unfair practice.
Feeling cheated by News editor Diwan( Mohan Joshi), who also happens to be a friend of her father ( Sayaji Shinde), an arms dealer in town; Ira meets with an accident while driving back home. She moves into Coma in the hospital. Ira’s father blames Diwan for this accident and hence to help his friend, Diwan deputes Abhishek on the job. Having come to know the truth about Ira, his real friend; Abhishek does all that he could do. But, he starts imagining Ira around him at home and in office. It’s actually hallucination, which sends a wrong message to others. But, Abhishek’s healing touch gives some hope to the doctor to revive Ira, who is in Coma. He convinces Ira’s adamant father to try out this therapy, to conclude the film with happy end.
Director Nitin kamble who begins the film so well, does not get good support from the limited theme and hence he keeps on attempting the hallucination effects on the lead pair, besides using the Narrator repeatedly. It is only the interaction between Sayaji Shinde and the attending doctor in the hospital and Mohan Joshi’s scenes with Bhushan Pradhan and Bhushan’s confrontation with his father at home, generate some humour. The film has used the backdrop of reality TV programme ‘Rokh Thok’ very well on three occasions, to keep some momentum in the screenplay. The climax is interesting; but lack of grip in the screenplay, makes the film look like an average entertainer.
The film however gets full marks for the fine performances coming from all the artistes. Both Bhushan and Sai have performed very naturally. Both of them look good. They receive good support from Sayaji Shinde, Mohan Joshi, Ujwala Jog and others. Sayaji, who otherwise plays a villain, finds better scope to express his emotions in this film. The technical effects have been used well. More attention has been paid on Sai’s designer clothes. Even art design during song sequences and excellent cinematography are something special. Not a bad film; but certainly would have been better, if the film maker had worked more hard on adding some more interesting situations in the screenplay.
‘Sambhaa’ adopts South film pattern
Rating: na
Presenter: Shiva Films Director: Sanjay Todkar Story: Sanjay Pawar Screenplay: Sanjay Pawar Dialogues: Sanjay Pawar Cinematographer: Girish Udale Music: Avinash – Vishvajeet Art: Satish Bidkar Cast: Devendra Chaugule, Mohan Joshi, MiIlind Gunaji, Kuldeep Pawar, Madhu Kambikar, Tejashree Khele, Deepali Sayyad Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
We are well aware of the progress of Marathi films, with different subjects portraying sensible topics. But, the quality improvement in Marathi cinema has not witnessed a good turn out at the theatres. On the contrary, Bollywood films made on the lines of South Indian films, are attaining grand success at box office. Best examples are films like ‘Dabbang’ and ‘Singham’. So, what if any of our Marathi film makers attempt the same formula in Marathi films ?
Actor- Producer Devendra Chougule has attempted this experiment through his new Marathi film ‘Sambhaa.. Aajcha Chava’ with all that we have witnessed in those hit Bollywood films, made on the lines of action packed South films. Only difference is that, he has retained his original script penned by Santosh Pawar, keeping the Marathi audience in mind; otherwise, his film would have resembled any dubbed version of commercial south film shown on TV channels now days.
The story of ‘Sambhaa’ is simple, keeping in mind the current scenario of price rise and its effect on common people and the traders playing Hand n Glove game with local politicians, who use their power to suppress the voice of the people with the help of police. Using all the latest technology with VFX and proving that Marathi films are nowhere behind Tollywood and Bollywood, shows the guts of the film maker. Be it music, choreography, photography, sound effect and stunt scenes, he has not compromised on any of these areas of production. And, for this effort, hats off to Devendra Chougule.
Just imagine, if Salman Khan were to play the central character of Sambha in this film, the film would have not only been a super duper hit in Maharashtra; but would have invited attention from all over India, if it was made under the direction of Mahesh Manjrekar or N. Chandra. Nevertheless, the efforts put in by Devendra Chougule are no less than Salman Khan. You can now call him Salman Khan of Marathi films, for performing all those stunts, using better reflexes in dancing than Salman and delivering those punchy lines penned by Santosh Pawar in his own style in Marathi.
There are few errors in direction by scene director Sanjay Todkar, but Action directors Anand Raj and Devraj nullify those slips. Music and background music remind you of south film’s music style. Incidentally, the Choreographer Kaladharan and stunt master Anand Raj of this film, are from South films. However, Girish Udale’s cinematography makes us feel proud, that we are watching an action packed Marathi film. He has captured some of the difficult shots very intelligently. Above all, the film maker has been sincere enough to show at the end, how he shot those difficult scenes before going for post production.
As an actor, Devendra Chougule shows lot of self confidence in himself, while playing this central character of Sambhaa. There is no doubt that he has kept the camera focused on him most of the time; but, that was the requirement of the script, which revolves around the hero, who fights against injustice in society, single handed with the support of few friends. Deepali Sayyed finds a suitable role of a journalist in this film and she has done her job well. Tejashree Khele is certainly a gift to Marathi cinema, after getting sufficient exposure in South films. But, she has less scope in this film. Otherwise, she has played the role of Kareena with ease, on the lines of typical southern stars. Mohan Joshi, Milind Gunaji, Madhu Kambikar, Kuldeep Pawar, Vijay Chavan, Mangesh Desai, Dhananjay Mandrekar have supported well in their limited roles. Junior Jhony Lever makes his debut as a comedian through this film and he resembles the veteran comedy king and has even tried to act like him. But, he has a long way to go, as the veteran comedian is still matchless.
Last but not the least, those who have enjoyed watching films like ‘Dabhang’ and ‘Singham’, why not watch ‘Sambhaa’? After all, it is made by our own Marathi manoos for our Marathi audience, who otherwise watch similar type of south and Bollywood films, at small towns district places of Maharashtra. More so, Devendra has made this film with total sincerity, admitting openly that it is a total commercial film.
‘Platform’ addresses issue on Girl child abuse
Rating: na
Producers: Veena Lokur And Arif Vadgama Director, Story, Dialogues: Veena Lokur Screenplay: Veena Lokur, Shamal Chavan Lyrics: Ashwini Shende Music: Nilesh Moharir Editor: Rajesh Rao Cinematographer: Suresh Deshmane Cast : Mohan Joshi, Sharad Ponkshe, Astad Kale, Prashant Patil, Shubhani Joshi & Sai Lokur Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
After achieving success through her first Marathi production ‘Mission Champion’, Film maker Veena Lokur from Belgaum has now offered one more sensible film ‘Platform'; which speaks about the Girl child abuse in India. Veena Lokur, who also makes her debut as a director through this film, has gone beyond the subject of Female foeticide to show the reality in our society, where girl child is still considered as a burden by the parents; especially in the weaker section of the society.
Through this film, Veena Lokur has launched her daughter Sai, who plays an important central role of Shivani Deshmukh, from a well to do family. Shivani, who is a final year college student, is about to find a campus recruitment and is returning home after attending a workshop; when she witness a horrifying act of parents, who just drop their two daughters into her compartment and run away, as the train leaves a platform after the halt.
Shivani (Sai Lokur) who takes the lead to hand over the girls to the Police, when she reaches her destination. But, she is deserted by all her friends. It is only her best friend Aditya (Astaad kale), who supports her and the two little girls ( aged 4 and 5 yrs) are taken to the Police station. But, at the Police station they experience the reality about the law, besides the child abuse. However, Aditya’s father (Sharad Ponkshe) being a lawyer, suggests them a way out. It looks like all roads are closed for Sai , as the parents of the missing girls cannot be traced. Shivani takes up the custoday of the two girls, much against the wish of her parents (Mohan Joshi and Veena Lokur).
When, Aditya also notices Shivani going out of the way to help the girls and getting emotionally involved in them, he too loses interest in her and leaves for US to take up a job.
He however, keeps in touch with Shivani over phone like a good friend. Shivani separates from her parents and adopts the girls. She takes good care of them, by offering good education for next 11 years. When the girls attain teenage, a particular incident in their life takes them to their past. Shivani has to reveal the true happenning. This is almost towards the climax of the film, when director Veena Lokur concludes her story with an appropriate end.
The film has a strong subject to convey, but to show the actual happening on the platform, her screenplay takes its own time. It is only little before interval, the film actually takes the momentum. To fill up the gaps in the first session, the director has taken help of music, with the inclusion of two songs. Lyricist Ashwini Shende’s fine wordings have received the composition from talented music director Nilesh Moharir.
Cinematographer Suresh Deshmane’s wonderful work is clearly visible, especially in the outdoors. His execution with different camera angles has made the job of director much easier. Being a debutant, Veena Lokur has done her best.
Newcomer Sai Lokur, who also makes her debut as an actress, looks more confident and appealing. She has performed the role of a protagonist with sincerity. Astaad kale, who also plays the leading man for the first time, is at ease and perfectly fits into that role of Aditya. Mohan Joshi and Sharad Ponkshe in the role of parents have nothing much to offer, but they have played their respective roles well. Veena Lokur is just fine in the role of sai’s mother in the film and so are the other characters of the film. The two child artistes and the grown up girls have performed their parts well. The film has already won the State Government award as one of the best films this year. But, to be eligible for international awards, it requires editing, especially in the three songs, except one background and few unwanted scenes in the first session. However, ‘Platform’ does succeed in passing a social message at the most appropriate time. This being a sincere effort from the lady film maker, it is to be appreciated.
‘Dhava Dhav’ does copy- paste of Bollywood
|
Rating: ★★1/2
Presenter: Rohini Films Producers: Narayan Bhandarkar Director: Bharat Gaikwad Story, Screenplay: Shashank Udapurkar Camera: Ranjan Jha Music: Nandu Honap Cast: Bharat Jadhav, Shashank Udapurkar, Mohan Joshi, Smita Jaykar, Anand Abhyankar, Jaywant Wadkar, Arun Kadam, Jayraj Nair, Madhavi Nimkar, Hrutuja Patil, Vilas Ujawane Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
At a time, when we notice a change coming into Marathi films, still some Marathi film makers believe in doing a copy-paste job from Bollywood. A new Marathi film ‘Dhava Dhav’ does exactly that. Shahank Udapurkar, who identifies himself as a script writer of this Marathi film, goes on the lines of Bollywood’s popular duo- Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra, making a provision for himself to play a double role. And, to add some star value to the film he selects Bharat Jadhav as his co-star.
The film begins with the so called backdrop of ‘Sholay’, with two brothers-Jai and Veeru becoming Police Inspectors, only because their mother wants them to do so, to settle the score with their father’s killer- Gabbar Patil. This so called Gabbar has not only killed their father, but has also taken away Vijay, the twin brother of Jai while in cradle, along with him; so as to make him a Don ( Just another Bollywood formula). He sends him to a ‘Don School’, somewhere abroad. But, when Vijay graduates and returns back, he behaves more like a film hero than Don. He calls himself Vijay Dinanath Chavan. If that is not enough, the Mother of Jai and Veeru, plays the role of Bollywood’s popular Mom-Rakhee, uttering her translated dialogues from Bollywood films.
The entire film drags in this fashion with all translated dialogues from few Bollywood movies, uttered by most of the characters. The two girls-Hema and Malini, who play the daughters of a Senior Police Inspector, obviously pair with Jai and Veeru. They flirt with them on the lines of another Bollywood film ‘Aankhen’. Finally, the film ends with a typical climax of Bollywood films of 70s and 80s.
Looking at this patchwork done with the help of some Bollywood films, the audience is made to think, whether to call this film an action, comedy or mockery of Bollywood ? With the presentation of such themes, how can one expect audience at the theatres ? The 2 pm show at one of the multiplexes in Mumbai that too on a Sunday was cancelled for want of people and at the other one located in a mall, it was screened for a dozen of viewers. We do have good actors in Marathi, but if they are made to act in such movies, then certainly it is a waste of their talent. Talking about the veterans like Mohan Joshi (who plays Gabber Patil), Smita Jaykar (Mother of Jai-Veeru-Vijay) and Anand Abhyankar (Sr. Police Inspector); they are simply wasted in their respective roles. The two girls namely Madhavi Nimkar and Hrutuja Patil are taken just for namesake to play the heroines. While the rest of the artistes play supporting roles, only to complete their team work
Music by Nadu Honap is just average and the background music is also a copy and paste job from popular Bollywood hits. Direction by Bharat Gaekwad is nothing special and so are the acts of Bharat Jadhav and Shashank Udapurkar. If there are few more such repeats in Marathi, those few who respect Marathi cinema, will also have to think twice before going to the theatres during those first three days.

Fantasy filled ‘Huppa Huiyya!’
Rating: na
Presenter: Akshara Films Division, DreamView Productions Pvt. Ltd Producers: Samit Kakkad, Amar Kakkad, Pushpa Kakkad Director: Anil Surve Camera: A.K. Bir Story & Screenplay: Hemant Edlabadkar Music: Ajit Parab Cast: Mohan Joshi, Siddharth Jadhav, Girija Oak, Mangesh Desai, Vabhav Mangle, Ganesh Yadav Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Come Hanuman Jayanti and you have a timely offering coming from Marathi film industry in the form of ‘Huppa Huiya!’ to Lord Hanuman. Produced by Amar and Pushpa Kakkad and directed by Anil Surve this author backed fantasy is based on the script of Hemant Edlabadkar.
Hanmya (Siddharth Jadhav)a poor boy from the village is brought up by the Sarpanch of the village ( Mohan Joshi) and his caring wife ( Mansi Magikar). Being a helpful youngster, Hanmya has two friends – a clown in the village who performs shows ( Mangesh Desai) and his beloved (Girija Oak). His daily routine is to help people from the village and to bring to book those involved in illegal activities. He is more into social work and helps the old lady ( Usha Nadkarni) living in the outskirts of the village, by collecting herbs for her medicines from the jungles .
One day, while collecting herbs, Hanmya interacts with a group of monkeys and eats a fruit thrown at him by one of the monkeys. When he returns to Old lady’s house, he finds extra energy within him. Not surprised by this superpower, the old lady realizes this gift coming from God, especially to those who would make use of it only for the right purpose. The script of the film then takes you on fantasy filled journey. Soon, you are taken for the darshan of 11 Hanuman temples created by Swami Samarth Ramdas in the 17th century, through that 8 minute song sequence.
Now, when there are good things happening, the evil power is sure to block the way. So, in comes the villain Rangrao ( Ganesh Yadav). He first gets Hanmya’s clown friend killed and also succeeds in giving an electric shock to Hanmya’s beloved. In the climax of the film, the old lady comes to remind Hanmya about the secret about the superpower that he possesses. Hanmya opts for the ‘three-in-one’ prayer to first get the water for the village. With that valid message, director Anil Surve concludes his film with happy ending.
‘Huppa Huiya!’ is a total entertaining film with a social message. In that two hour length film, the director has however wasted first thirty minutes to describe all the characters and their attitude. But, once it takes off with that fantasy filled plot, it runs smoothly, holding the audience to their seats. Cinematography by national award winning cameraman A.K. Bir is the biggest asset of the film. He has captured all those outdoor scenes very effectively. Siddharth Jadhav has proved that a tailor made role can make him a solo hero, shouldering the responsibility of film’s success. Girija Oak as his co-star is the right choice. She has played her part very well. One wonders as to why an actress of her calibre hasn’t been offered better roles. Mohan Joshi, Mansi Magikar, Mangesh Desai support well as character artistes. Usha Nadkarni is impressive playing the old woman, but it is Ganesh Yadav in his negative role invites the attention. He has performed small roles in many Bollywood films, but now gets his chance to prove his acting skills, through this film. Kashmira Shah makes her brief appearance in one item number. Music by Ajit Parab is okay. The film has not paid much attention on its ad campaign. Looking at the fantasy filled script, they could have used other methods of publicity.
In all, ‘Huppa Huiya!’ is an entertaining film.
