MMW : You are staging ‘Karti Kaljat Ghusli’ again. What was the reason to choose this play?
Prashant Damle : I wanted a play with good humour. I was certain that I did not want a farce or a slapstick comedy. ‘Karti Kaljat Ghusli’ is a well written play with pure humour, where you do not have to force or create comedy.

MMW : Tejashree Pradhan is debuting with this play. What’s your take?
PD : Tejashree was keen to do theatre. She has the ability and has been putting in real hard work.

MMW : What keeps you away from films and television?
PD : Number of stage shows. But frankly, I was seen on television (Marathi and Hindi) and I have just completed film shooting of ‘Bho Bho’. You will see me in another film in an important role in ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 – Lagnala Yayachach’.

MMW : But you like to be on stage…..
PD : You ought to do, what gives you more pleasure. I enjoy doing theatre.

MMW : Any role close to your heart?
PD : I can not single out one role. Each play I featured in, is a milestone in my career. Frankly, I love all my plays. Each play and role has its own importance. …..

MMW : What about films and serials?
PD : Films…. ‘Vajva Re Vajva’ and ‘Savat Mazi Ladki’, TV serial…..‘Kai Pahilas Mazhyat’. Me and the whole team had a blast during the making of this serial.

Theatre gives me a high and it’s the best medium for me and with three plays running simultaneously, I can hardly spare time for films. But, if I get good films like ‘Tu Tithe Me’, ‘Atmavishwas’ and ‘Wajwa Re Wajwa’, I will certainly accept them.

Prashant: Yes, I am a brand ambassador for SVC Bank and Disha Direct. I visit the branches, meet clients and do endorsements for them. I have my own personal web site too.

Q.: What next?
Prashant: I want to achieve more by producing and directing films and also produce many more plays and act in them as well.

But there are a lot of barriers like IPL matches, bomb blasts, elections, recession, exams, play dates, festivals which keep people away from watching the plays. Every producer dreams that his play should complete a 1000 plays but these things are keeping us away from our dreams.”

It is Prashant Damale’s fourth play which has successfully completed a 1000 plays. Till the 850th show, the stars in the play Arun Nalavade, Kavita Laad, Savita Prabhune were the same but after marriage, Kavita left the play and was replaced by Veena Jamkar.

The play was first staged in the year 1997. Mr. Bhat already had drafted a plan of the play in his mind. He had even thought of a suitable title but was still in search of a suitable writer. His search made him approach Pu. La. Deshpande and Gangaram Gavankar until he finally found Ratnakar Matkari. He wrote a play which would appeal to all married couples from those who have newly entered into wedlock to those who were enjoying 25 years of married life. Making the play a colorful one was the direction of Vaman Kendre.
