Movie review by:  Ulhas Shirke

For more than 60 years, Hollywood has offered hundreds of action packed films for bikers. ‘The Pace that Thrills’, ‘Easy Riders’, ‘Stone’ & ‘Biker Boyz’ are just to name a few. 10 years ago, Bollywood offered something for Bikers, through action filled ‘Dhoom’ and followed the same stunts through ‘Dhoom 2′ and ‘Dhoom3′. So, don’t be surprised, if a Marathi film maker like Rajesh Latkar offers something like ‘Biker’s Adda’, targeting at young bike lovers. Perhaps, this is the first Marathi film, about the bikers and their lifestyle.

Starring angry young man of Marathi films, Santosh Juvekar in the lead, ‘Biker’s Adda’ offers four passionate Bikers, wanting to prove themselves, by participating in Bike races. So, they form their team D5 and practice hard. Without the knowledge of their mentor Krish, they join a club, ‘Biker’s Adda’, and register their team for the race. Krish(Jay Aditya Giri) is against Vicky (Santosh Juvekar) and his friends joining this club, as he knows the main business of the owners of this place.

Bikers Adda, MoviestillSoon, Vicky and his D5 team comprising of Hrishi, Salim & Abhi, prove their skills, at this place; which also helps Vicky to find a good looking girlfriend Aditi ( Prarthana Behere). But, soon they notice foul play by organizers, who are into betting, game fixing and drug business. The rest of the film is all about their fight against the bad guys and revenge against the evil doers. But, it all happens in a typical Hindi action film style, with a typical climax, where the hero always stands a winner, in spite of facing all the hurdles.

But, good thing about this film, is its presentation style, which is something new to Marathi. Watch the costumes, hair styles of the characters. They are specially created by Costume Designer Chaitrali Dongre for this film. Other plus points of this film are the action scenes by stunt directors, some of whom are themselves part of this film. The wonderful sound design and the superb photography by Shakil Khan , including aerial photography is also noteworthy.

Santosh Juvekar is at his best in this film, while Prarthana Behere has been used just as a show piece, with one song sequence. But, she looks stunning, in those few scenes. There is another actress Tanvi Parab, who plays a female biker. But, she too has limited scope. In short, this is a male dominated film, with all bikers around, seen on the screen, most of the time , either involved in street fights or racing their bikes. Model turned actor Jay Aditya Giri, has played his part well. After all, he too is a real life biker. Good support comes from Devendra Bhagat, Anirudh Harip and few others. Veteran actor Shrikant Moghe, is namesake in this film.

There is less scope for music directors Vishi and Nimo to get noticed through few songs; but they have done a good job in background music. There is not much in the story, except for passing a social message, through its action filled screenplay. Therefore, this film may not appeal to regular artistic Marathi film lovers. But, this stylish ‘Biker’s Adda’ may appeal young bikers.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

During the period 1995-1996, ‘Dagadi Chaawl’ located in the heart of Mumbai city; was a well known place, for wrong reasons. Those days, underworld activities and street fights existed in the city, with builders and jewellers targeted, for extortion of money, for providing protection. Some of the Policemen also had nexus with Gangsters.

Set on this backdrop, producers Sangita Ahir, Amol Kale, Suresh Sawant  and director Chandrakant kanse have offered this film ‘Dagdi Chaawl’, which revolves around the place ‘Dagadi Chaawl’ located in South Central Mumbai. A so called gangster ‘Daddy'( Makarand Deshpande) living in Dagadi Chaawl, is shown spreading  his money extortion racket, with the help of his associates, headed by short tempered & dangerous Chandu Mama( Sanjay Khapre); thus posing a challenge to a  rival gang. But, almost at this time, a new strict DCP  Ashfaq Khan ( Digvijay Rathod) takes charge of this area and vows to arrest all those, involved in the extortion racket.

Makarand Deshpande , Daddy, Dagadi Chawl

Suryakant ( Ankush Choudhary)  a Police Constable’s son staying in the neighbourhood area of Dagadi Chaawl, is a dashing  young man ,who works in a motor garage and  in love with a pretty girl Suman ( Pooja Sawant)living   in his chaawl.  Soon, their friendship turns into marriage, much against the wish of Girl’s parents. But, before that, one such  incident happens with Suryakant, which lands him in a situation, where, he comes face to face with ‘Daddy‘, for settling the issue.

What transpires through this meeting between the two, is the later part of the story. Director Chandrakant Kanse makes it gripping, almost on the lines of some of the Ram Gopal Verma style of films on gangsters.  Therefore, the presentation part of the film, is really good, displaying some of the sequences, to show the helplessness of a Youth, who is trapped between the obligation of  ‘Daddy’, who offers him protection and the Police Officer, trying to use him, as a witness, against the gangster. Needless to say, that finally he does, what he feels is right.

Though before the start of the film, the film maker states that it is a work fiction; the title of the film and the name of the character ‘Daddy’, clearly suggests, the name of the gangster turned politician belonging to this  place. The film has also tried to show his straight forward attitude, for delivering justice in his own court of law, to all those found guilty; with his typical judgement, stating, ‘Chukila Maafi Naahi'(There is no pardon, for a mistake). But, when he meets Suryakant for the first time, he finds the spark in his eyes and feels that he is the perfect man, to be his close associate. In Suryakant, he sees not only a fearless person, but a youngster using his brains, to get the work done. The eye to eye contact between the two, before their meeting, suggests everything, in a scene, just at the stroke of interval.

Ankush-Chaudhari-Pooja-Sawant-In-Dagdi-Chawl

The film stands out, on the performances of the main characters played by Ankush Choudhary and Makarand Deshpande. Both of them have displayed their dexterity, with perfect understanding of their respective characters. Ankush , particularly finds a role, which should boost his confidence as hero, with two successful films, already to his credit this year. Selection of Pooja Sawant, seems a perfect choice of the director, for the role of Suman, a smart and charming middle class girl. She matches well with the tall hero Ankush, with her equally good height. Their few love scenes, have been captured well. Almost all the other characters in the film, look very realistic, including Chandu Mama ( Sanjay Khapre), Daddy’s trusted lawyer and associate ( Yatin karyekar), Suryakant’s close friend ( Sandeep Gaikwwad), Pooja’s father (Mohan Khambete) & corrupt Police constable ( Kamalesh Sawant). Though the role of DCP has been portrayed by Digvijay Rathod, it would have been better, if this role was offered to a well known artiste, to make better impact. Music has limitations in the film, except for two songs, which are good; but, background music is engaging. Photography of this film is also a delight. ‘Dagadi Chaawl’ may appeal to all those, who liked realistic action films, like ‘Satya’ & ‘Rege’.

Vaibhav Mangle, Majhe Pati Saubhagyavati, Marathi Serial

Audience eagerly waiting for Vaibhav’s make over

Vaibhav Mangle, Majhe Pati Saubhagyavati, Marathi SerialAfter a lot of publicity, finally, Vaibhav Mangale’s TV serial ‘Majhe Pati Soubhagyavati’ has arrived on Zee Marathi channel. The versatile actor, in the company of  Nandita Dhuri, playing his wife, has already displayed his skills, as a struggling actor, in the initial episodes. There were some interesting happenings covered so far, to show his frustration clearly. Even, the shooting episode and his interaction with his father in law played by Uday Sabnis , were well presented. But, audience is more eager to see his make over as a female actor.

In ‘Nanda Saoukhyabhare’, on the same channel, Swanandi is still facing the err of her adamant sister, in spite of her engagement to Indraneel. The serial is yet to pick up, as it is moving in a typical Saas bahu style, with the character of Vachhi Maushi, playing her games, to take revenge against Indraneel’s mother. Some of the dialogues in this serial are just repeated again and again.

Runji on Star Pravah, certainly needs a revamp, as there is nothing interesting left in this serial. Same is the case with  ‘Kamla’ on Colors channel, as behavior of Dev is not at all acceptable. One could understand his orthodox thinking mother’s attitude; but behavior of Dev in not at all convincing. Don’t really know, what the author of this serial has in mind.

However, in another serial ‘Asa Sasar Surekh Bai’ on Colors channel the greedy uncle of Yash has come to know, the background of Jui, after reading her palm. So, now we expect him to support Yash, after some melodrama expected from lady members of the family. But, on the other side, Gautam Joglekar, who has started playing elderly person’s role, perfectly suits as Jui’s father, offering variety through his performance.

Till now, we have been watching  Asmita, desperately in search of her father’s killer, in the serial ‘Asmita’. Now, she has  almost come close to proving the involvement of her own father in law. But, will that happen ? Let us wait and see.

Aditi Sarangdhar, Actress

“The bond of relationship is more important in marriage” – Aditi Sarangdhar

Aditi Sarangdhar, Actress
Having started her acting career with Nishikant Kamat’s experimental play ‘Litmus’, Aditi Sarangdhar, a talented actress from Kalyan, later found scope in Devendra Pem’s female version of ‘All The Best’. Through TV serials like ‘Damini’ and ‘Vadalvaat’, she became a household name in Maharashtra. Aditi Sarangdhar, did act in about fifteen Marathi films during past few years; but her performance in Marathi play ‘Proposal’ and TV serial ‘Lakshya’ brought her name and fame. In fact, her performance in ‘Proposal’ brought her many popular awards. Now, her new play ‘Graceful’ is also topic of discussion. MarathiMovieworld.com spoke to this talented actress. Excerpts from an interview:

Having played a bold character in the play ‘Proposal’, now your play ‘Graceful’ is being staged. Could you please tell us something about this play .
A: I am playing Veda , an actress, who is in relationship with a 40+ writer, who has a wife and a daughter. But, my relationship with the writer is something beyond physical relationship and this disturbs his wife, who argues , trying to prove the legality of their marriage. It is an interesting debate, which concludes well. But, it sends a message to all those 40+ married women, to offer all that their husbands look for, at this age. And, we are getting good response to this play, from all age groups.

But, what is your personal opinion on this subject of ex marital relationship ?
A: I think, we people are living in this advanced world. To maintain a good marital relationship , it is important for every couple to live with an understanding and perfect bonding. If a man lives with his wife, with total involvement with his mind and body, both of them don’t face any problems.

Today, we see many women oriented subjects in films and TV serials. What’s your opinion?
A: This is good. Every woman gets inspired by a character on screen. Like men, women are not able to react or express their problems. In fact, they are the symbol of patience and sufferings. These characters offer them some confidence.

Your role in ‘Lakshya’ serial has been highly praised. How do you react to this appreciation?
A: I am used to this kind of praise, since my performance in the serial ‘Vadalvaat’. In fact, such kind of praise has made me more responsible, to perform still better; to meet the expectations of the audience. Actually, I am still in the learning process. Till now, I have scored only 5 marks and have to score 95 marks more, to be 100 % perfect. Luckily, I have found all good people in this industry, from whom I have learned so many good things and will continue to do so.

You have acted in many Marathi films; but, we have seen you in lead role, in very few films. Why ?
A: It may be , because of my involvement in TV serials. But, now in my forthcoming film ‘Mohar’ I am playing the lead role. I have worked without make up, as I am playing the role of a woman laborer working in brick kiln. For me, it was a different experience as an actress. This film is directed by Vijaya Katkar and is all set to release on 9th October.

Aren’t you very keen on doing comedy films and serials ?
A: No, it is not so. I have already performed comedy during Zee Comedy awards show. Actually, I like to perform comedy; but, unfortunately I am not getting such roles. It is easy to make people cry; but, it is difficult to make them laugh.

What are your future projects ?
A: Besides ‘Mohar’, I am doing ‘Bazaar’ & ‘Malak’, with different types of roles. Very soon, you will also see me doing a Hindi project.

What are your hobbies, when you are not shooting ?
A : I love music. But, I also love to sit quiet, in meditation. I love to meditate. It helps me to understand myself well.

Finally, could you please tell us, which role you enjoyed the most?
A: My best is yet to come. I am here to stay for long, in this industry. I would like to do much better than what I have performed till now.

Some consumer products are marketed so well, with attractive packaging, that a consumer is tempted to buy them. But, when they actually open the packaging, they are slightly disappointed, as the product they have purchased, doesn’t fulfill  their high expectations. Same is the case with a feature film. Many a times, the trailer of a particular film, is so appealing that the audience is tempted to watch  such a film. But, when they actually watch the film, they are left disenchanted.

vijay maurya, Marathi Movie, Vakratunda MahakaayaThis is what happens,  in the case of  new Marathi film ‘Vakratunda Mahakaya’. The film opens up well, with a terrorist group trying to create trouble in city of Mumbai, by planting a bomb in a soft toy Ganapati and leaving the same in a temple complex, with the help of a hired local terrorist ( Vijay Maurya) . But, his plan is foiled, when a little child Altaf ( Naman Jain) flees away with this toy. Director Punarvasu Naik , who has the influence of Bollywood films, being an associate of  many  known directors;  has tried to develop the story of Yogesh Joshi in his own style. He does succeed to a certain extent, to generate a lot of interest in the first half of the film; showing the ‘cat and mouse’ chase.

The director has also very skilfully, shown the soft toy passing from one person to another and finally coming back to the same child. Some of the sequences,  like the soft toy of Ganapati pouring drop by drop milk, through its  trunk and a modern female saint ( a look alike of a present day controversial God Woman) presenting the same toy, to  a minister, as a return gift;  have been presented well, to generate humour. The presence of the character of an elderly woman ( Usha Nadkarni) selling home made food products and coming across the same soft toy on repeated occasions, has also been captured well.  The veteran actress has also played her part well. But, Prarthana Behere is a waste in this film. She has been used as a married woman, having an affair with a youngster living in the neighborhood; and the latter presenting her with this soft toy, found by him on roadside bench.

There are few other popular faces seen in Marathi serials, like Pallavi Patil ( Runji fame), Rutuja Bagwe( Nanda Saukhyabhare‘ fame), Nachiket  Purnapatre (who has just joined the ‘Dil Dosti Duniyadari’ team) ; but except for Nachiket, who plays a roadside thief Paplu offering shelter to the homeless little boy Altaf, others haven’t found much scope.  Drawback of the film is that many of the dialogues in this film are in Hindi, thus losing its Marathi flavor. Director hasn’t been able to build up the other supporting characters, played by Jayant Savarkar, Usha Nadkarni, Prarthana Behere , Pallavi Patil and few others well, so as to connect them well with the happenings in the film. Perhaps, he didn’t have much scope to elaborate , in this 90 minute long film.

Nevertheless, the performance of Naman Jain, the child star, is praiseworthy.

All that the film has tried to convey,  is that Lord Ganapati is there to thwart all the plans of terrorists.  In simple words,  ‘God is Great! Ganapati Bappa Morya! ‘. But, at the end of the film, it makes you think, as to why every citizen shouldn’t be alert, about the happenings around ?.   ‘Vakratunda Mahakaya’ has therefore turned out to be an average entertaining action filled film, with its limited content.

Tejashree Pradhan, Shshank Ketkar, Honar Sun Mi Hya Gharchi

‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi’ creates awareness about environment protection

Tejashree Pradhan, Shshank Ketkar, Honar Sun Mi Hya Gharchi
After watching the Ganapati and Gauri Pooja performed by our artistes, in their respective serials, last week; now, we saw a good message passed by the makers of the serial ‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi’. While Janhavi’s father  explained his illiterate and adamant wife, about preservation of environment, for getting good rains; Shree explained to his aunts, about the methods of water conservation. He seemed to be more critical about wastage of water, when it is freely available to people.

One way, it was a good lesson to learn, for those, who waste water, which is the most precious commodity, today. On one side, we find people from city wasting a lot of water , while taking shower or tub bath, on the other side, in villages facing drought, we see women walking miles and miles, to fetch water in a small container, lifted over their heads. TV serials being watched by almost all the Maharashtrian households, this is a very good way of passing a timely message. For the past few years, we saw the awareness created by many TV serials, about environment friendly Ganesha idols and it has really helped, to spread the awareness message. Now, why can’t some serials with good subjects, create awareness about corruption and greed for money, in day to day life  of people and  how it affects country’s economy?

In a serial like ‘Nanda Soukhyabhare’ we find the mother of the lead hero, just wanting to know, how much she will benefit financially, through her ‘would be’ daughter in law. In ‘Asa Saasar Surekh bai’, we find the uncle of  the lead hero, encouraging his nephew to marry a rich girl, so that he would be able to spend money, on his own daughter’s marriage. Isn’t that something strange? Why can’t he himself work hard and raise funds on his own, to meet the expenses of his daughter? Such money minded selfish attitudes of some of the prominent characters in the serials, are sending a wrong message. They keep on dragging the gimmicks of such negative characters, till the concluding part of the serial.

It is not necessary that every serial should have one strong negative character , dominating the ongoing story. It only encourages those viewers, who try to emulate them. Instead, it is better to have a total comedy subject or a detective or police investigative serial, where the people involved in all such harassment or criminal acts, are put behind the bars, in just 2 or three episodes. TV serials play a very important role in passing a social message. “As you sow, so shall you reap.”

Ganeshotsav 2015, Celebration, Marathi Television

Marathi TV serials getting ready to welcome Ganapati Bappa

Colors Marathi Serial, Ganpati, Ganeshotsav

Come Ganapati festival and we witness almost all Marathi TV serials worshipping the idol of Ganapati Bappa. In ‘Assa Saasar Surekh Bai’ on Colors Marathi, we have already seen decorations going on in Yash and Jui’s office, to welcome Ganapati Bappa. We also saw Jui helping Yash to make the idol of Ganapati from clay. But, we don’t know, whether it is environment friendly idol. That is yet to be announced.

Traditionally, we find most of the serials, creating awareness about environment friendly idols. On the same channel in ‘Kamla’, it will be interesting to see, who will perform the Ganapati Puja. Sharu or kamla, if at all, there is Ganapati Puja in their house? And, what will Shubhra do in ‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’? At present, she is busy teaching a lesson to the actress, equipping herself with perfect choreography. But, we will surely see the Aarti being held either at Jai- Aditi’s office or at their so called kaka’s house.
Ganeshotsav 2015, Celebration, Marathi Television
In ‘Asmita’ on Zee Marathi channel, we saw, Asmita’s husband getting ready to bring home Ganpati idol. By the way, they already have a little guest in their house, whom they have treated as God’s messenger. Though Asmita is dressed up in Saree, to get ready for festive season, there is no holiday for her, as ‘Work is Worship’ in her case. By the way, she looks very nice in Sarees. On Star Pravah channel, we are likely to see Ganapati Puja in serials like ‘Runji’ and ‘Tumacha Aamcha Same Asata’. On the same channel, we are watching Dr.Amol Kolhe, visiting various Ganapati Mandals across Pune, to check their preparations. By the way, he is taking lot of interest in presenting this programme. He just loves anchoring.

In Zee Marathi laughter show, ‘Chala Hava Yeu Dya’, we saw something different this time. The concept was ‘Same to Same’, where we saw all those lookalike faces of well known actors, from Hindi and Marathi film industry. Some of them had a lot of resemblance, but we have seen them in so many Hindi programmes in the past. The programme should have given chance to newcomers, especially our own Marathi speaking artistes, like those three, who resembled Nana Patekar, Makarand Anaspure and Govinda and also one, who did mimicry of all big stars. Most of the participants could not speak Marathi. So, it was almost like a Hindi programme, losing its Marathi identity. And, that was the only disappointment,, as the programme concept was good.

Amruta Deshmukh, Actress, Tumacha Amach Same Asata

“My role of Gauri, is a dream come true for me”- Amruta Deshmukh

Amruta Deshmukh, Actress, Tumacha Amach Same Asata
Every Marathi actress aspires to see huge posters of her Film or TV serial, at prominent locations in city. Till now, very few Marathi artistes have been fortunate, to see it happen. But, for newcomer Amruta Deshmukh, it is like dream come true. Few months ago, she was playing the role of Mayuri Wagh’s sister in law, in the serial ‘Asmita’ on Zee Marathi. Today, she has bagged a lead role in Shreyas Talpade’s debut TV serial ‘Tumcha Aamcha same Asata’ on Star Pravah.

This being Shreyas’ home production, there is lot of marketing done, for its promotion. At every prominent spot in Mumbai city, you find the huge posters of this serial displayed. While travelling in Local train, you get to hear the advertisement of this serial .In fact, the ad of this serial has set this new trend of advertising . And, the person who has been benefitted the most, is young actress Amruta Deshmukh. Today, she is the talk of the town.

Amruta who is originally from Pune, completed her BA with Psychology from S.P.College and later did her Post Graduate Course in Mass Communication & Journalism from Ranade Institute affiliated to Pune University. Amruta has been active with acting field, since her college days, and has also bagged a silver medal for best actress, in a prestigious inter collegiate drama competition. When Amruta first came to Mumbai to give audition, she couldn’t find suitable roles. So, she worked as intern for two months with TV 9 channel. So, we have another actress, after Prarthana Behere, who has worked a s a TV Journalist.

When we spoke to Amruta, we did ask her, as to why she took up a job in TV channel as a Journalist, when she came to Mumbai to become an actress. And, Amruta was frank enough to admit that she gave auditions for some film productions, but wasn’t getting selected. “I actually wanted to play a village girl, as Marathi films these days are rural based . But, couldn’t get through the auditions. At that point, I thought that I was not meant for such roles. So, I decided to take up job in Media house, as I had already done my course in Journalism. It was a question of my survival, in this city of dreams,” she explained.

Amruta first found a role in the serial ‘Pudhcha Paul’ and later in detective serial ‘Asmita’. These were not prominent roles; but, were enough to make her presence felt. But, Amruta was very positive, that one day, she would get a lead role. Perhaps, the popularity of the serial ‘Asmita’ proved to be lucky for Amruta, though she played a slightly negative role.

Now that she is playing the lead role of Gauri, in the serial ‘Tumcha Aamcha Same Asata’, Amruta is very delighted. She is playing a Psychologist in this serial. Incidentally, Amruta has done her graduation with specialization in this subject. “Yes, I am happy and also glad that the serial is being promoted in a big way, so as to reach maximum people. This role of Gauri, is a dream come true for me. But, at the same time, there is a lot of responsibility on me. I have to deliver my best, to fulfill the expectations of the home viewers,” She concluded.

Charlie Chaplin once said, “All I need to make a comedy, is a park, a policeman and a pretty girl.” These were perhaps his requirements, to create situation based comedy films. But, filmmaker R. Viraj , who seems to be inspired by film maker Dada Kondke and his style of presenting the film, needed two friends Yash (Rajesh Bhosale) and Raj (Chinmay Udgirkar) , struggling to make a film, a pretty girl Supriya ( Girija Joshi) and flamboyant rich landlord Bhau Damdar ( Bhau kadam), wanting to make a film, just to flirt with the aspiring actresses.

With coming together of all these characters, the film actually takes off, half an hour after the introduction of all of them, which usually happens with all Marathi comedy films. As the screenplay of this film progresses, we find these two friends, making plans to extract money from the producer , playing all their tricks to fool him. But, when they come to know that he himself wants to play the lead character, they are in real trouble. The girl, whom Raj selects as the leading lady, turns out to be the sister of Yash; thus inviting more problems for them. So, they introduce a lady character, in the form of Chatak Chandani( Aarti Solanki) a professional tamasha artist, to lure the producer.

Girija Joshi, Chinmay Udgirkar

With this limited content, the film tries to entertain the audience, with the help of some double meaning dialogues; which are inspired by Dada Kondke films and some laughter, through few humor filled scenes. There are few songs in the film, which are just fine enough to meet the requirement of the film. It would have been better, if the last title song, which is a hit song from a video album, was included as part of the film. Best thing about the film, is its clever photography by Ankush Birajdar, who has tried to capture indoor as well as outdoor scenes, skillfully.

Director Viraj, has managed to extract good performance from versatile actor Bhau Kadam , lead actress talented Girija Joshi and other supporting artistes. But, while presenting the character of Chinmay Udgirkar, he has allowed him to imitate the style of Shahrukh Khan, more than required. One expected screenplay to be more appealing and dialogues to be original , to generate spontaneous amusement. Nevertheless, Bhau Kadam with his mere presence on the screen and Girija Joshi, with her glam looks, have tried to invite the attention of the viewers.

All in all, ‘Vaajlach Paahije! Game Ki Shinema’, offers average Entertainment.
