Over the years, Marathi films have made tremendous progress in presenting their subjects with good technical support, finest locations and glamorous costumes; almost on par with big banner Hindi films. At the same time, some of our film makers were also influenced by South films and officially attempted remakes of original south films into Marathi. The best examples are, films like Classmates‘, ‘Shutterand Time Bara Vait‘. But, only ‘Classmates’ did very good business, as it was focused on young generation, as target audience.

Now, Filmmaker Sanjay Jadhav’s latest released film ‘Tu Hi Re also falls in this category. Starring Swwapnil Joshi, Sai Tamhankar & Tejaswini Pandit in the lead roles, this film is inspired by 2006 Tamil Film ‘Silunu Oru Kaadhal’. And, this has been officially declared by the filmmaker, in the credits, appearing at the end of the film.
swapnil joshi, Tejaswini Pandit, Sai Tamhankar
In the beginning of the film, you find a young pretty woman Nandini (Sai Tamhankar) taking bath in a pond with beautiful surrounding . Actually, she is advertising for a popular talcum powder. A good thinking by the filmmaker. And, you soon realise that she is a typical village girl, on the lines of Bollywood films of 60s and 70s. She is more keen on love marriage; but, her parents fix her marriage with a young Engineer Siddharth (Swwapnil Joshi) son of their family friend. Soon, we come to know that it is a marriage against the wish of both these youngsters.

But, soon we see the shift , showing the same couple happily married after eight years and living with their little seven year old daughter Piyu( Mrunal Jadhav) in a posh Mumbai apartment. Looking at their behaviour, you feel as if they are just married. But, one fine day, Nandini receives a courier parcel containing some photos, revealing the past story of her husband and his so called affair with a beautiful girl Bhairavi( Tejaswini Pandit), who is the daughter of a wealthy Parliamentarian ( Dr.Girish Oak) , living in Pune. So, she verifies the facts from Siddharth’s friend( Sushant Shelar) and proceeds to Pune to meet that girl. On her return, she surprises her husband and what transpires, is what you notice in climax of this film.

With this limited story, director Sanjay Jadhav has tried to make this film interesting, with the help of good dialogues, finest locations, wonderful photography by Prasad Bhende, good music provided by the trio Pankaj Padghan, Amitraj and Shashank Powar .Though in the first half, he could not generate much interest in the screenplay, he has cleverly managed to hold his grip on the interesting happenings, which gives a different look, to this so called love triangle. All the three important artistes Swwapnil, Sai and Tejaswini have given their best. But, it is Tejaswini, who steals the show. Perhaps, for the first time, she has been used in such a glam filled role. She has not only impressed the audience with her performance; but, also with her striking looks, with those beautiful designer costumes.

There is a small drawback in this film, as care has not been taken to present the original Tamil story, to suit especially Marathi audience. Our Marathi audience will surely notice it. Nevertheless, ‘Tu Hi Re’ is a technically well presented film, almost on par with any big banner Hindi film, based on such a theme. If you have liked all the love stories of Yash Chopra, don’t miss this film, as the treatment given to the story is the same.

Aditi Sarangdhar, Asha Shelar, Actress

‘Graceful’ Aditi makes her point, on ex marital relationship

Marathi plays on ex marital relationship, are not new to Marathi drama lovers. In the recent past, we saw a play ‘Aamhi Sou Kumud Prabhakar Apte’ with Pratiksha Lonkar and Aishwarya Narkar playing the first and second wife respectively, of  Late Prabhakar Apte.  It presented  each other’s point of view, for their identity as Ms. Kumud Prabhakar Apte.
Aditi Sarangdhar, Asha Shelar, Actress
Now, director Rajan  Tamhane presents the same subject,  once again, in a different way, through his latest play ‘Graceful’. Written by  Mahesh Ghatpande and produced by Anuradha Wagh,  this latest Marathi play portrays  two women, in the life of a celebrity script writer.  First one is his middle aged  married wife ( Asha Shelar) and the other is a young graceful  TV actress( Aditi Sarandhar) , with whom he is in  ‘live in relationship’.   ‘Graceful’ presents these  two women characters, throughout the play,  who try to prove their love and affection towards  the writer.  While his wife tries to argue, stating that she being  his official wife, commands  all the respect, while his actress girlfriend, also claims that she is also  the wife of the writer, and receives all the love and affection from him.

The play not only presents  the argument between  the two women; but, also has few moments, to surprise the audience.  In this play,  the character of writer exists only through his voice in the background. As the story had limited content, there  was enough scope for the director to use  audio visual display, to show  some flashback moments, as noticed now days in many popular plays. But, that was not noticed  in this play.

There was enough scope  to show the character of celebrity writer to appear in the last scene;  but once again, that did not happen. Therefore, in the entire play you only find these two women, proving their point, to defend  themselves   . Nevertheless, both Aditi Sarangdhar and Asha Shelar ( Janhavi’s mother in popular TV serial ‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi) have displayed their potential as versatile actresses, through their impulsiveness,  in different scenes, throughout the play.

Wonderful set design by Pradeep Muley , costumes designed by Geeta Godbole add  luster,  to this emotion filled play. It is a sincere effort by both the actresses, to make this women oriented play , presentable.

Shreyas Talpade, Deepti Talpade, Actor, Picture

Is ‘Tumcha Aamcha Same Asata’ Shreyas’ own love story ?

Shreyas Talpade, Deepti Talpade, Actor, Picture

Popular actor Shreyas Talpade has already turned producer of Marathi films. Now, he is making his debut as TV serial producer, through new Marathi serial ‘Tumcha Aamcha Same Asata’, which has been aired from 31st August at 8.30 pm prime time, on Star Pravah channel. The very first episode has clearly indicated that it is a love story, happening between a struggling actor Ishant ( Stavan Shinde) and Gauri( Amruta Deshmukh). While Ishant is shown as a struggling actor, Gauri is a psychologist and both are serious about their respective career.

Incidentally, it may be recalled that producer Shreyas Talpade was already a actor, when he married Deepti , who is a psychologist. So, obviously the home viewers are curious to know, whether it is real love story of the celebrity couple. By the way, Deepti, who was a clinical psychologist, is today a busy producer. So, it will be interesting to see, how the story of ‘Tumcha Aamcha Same Asata’ moves ahead , in the forthcoming episodes.

Though, Stavan and Amruta is announced as a fresh pair, we have noticed Amruta in ongoing serial ‘Asmita’ on Zee Marathi, playing the role of Asmita’s ( Mayuri Wagh) sister in law. So, with this new assignment in the lead role, it is almost sure that, she will be replaced or the character will be shown exit. The serial is directed by well known director Aditya Sarpotdar. And, it is a pleasure to watch many well known artistes like Kavita Lad, Anand Ingale, Pushkar Shrotri, Madhav Abhyankar returning to small screen, through character roles.

Star Pravah’ is also getting ready to launch another new serial ‘Mandal Bhari Aahe’, with Dr. Amol Kolhe playing the lead role. As this serial will go on the air from 14th September, they have also announced a competition for Best Ganpati mandal,to popularize this serial, during upcoming Ganapati Festival.

On Colors channel, it was surprising to find popular actress Prarthana Behere, making a special appearance, in one of the episodes of ‘Kamla’. But, as the episode progressed , it became clear, as to why she was given the character name Avani; as she was promoting the television premiere, of her film ‘Mitwa’, which was to be premiered on Sunday, on the same channel. Till now, we had only noticed the artistes of forthcoming Marathi films, making special appearances in a episode of a popular TV serial, to promote their films. But, now, Colors channel have set a new trend, of allowing the stars of films, to promote their film, to be premiered on their channel.

Over the years we have seen many ‘Road Movies’ in Hollywood and Bollywood  like ‘Something Wild’, ‘Five Easy Pieces’, Bombay To Goa’, Journey Bombay To Goa’,  ‘Road’, ‘Mr.& Mrs. Iyer’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Highway’ to name a few. All these movies were of  different genres.  Generally, in Road movies we expect, Auto race ,chase, adventure, horror , crime or comedy. Through a Marathi Road movie of the past, we saw Film maker Sachin Pilgaonkar presenting a Tourist Bus journey on a pilgrimage. And, it contained all the required happenings for entertaining the audience, during travel on the road.

Actress Huma Qureshi, Highway Marathi

Now, writer Girish Kulkarni and Director Umesh Kulkarni have offered a different type of entertainment, through their latest Marathi film ‘Highway- Ek Selfie Aarpaar’ which may be called a mix bag of journey. The writer and director have focussed their attention on the attitude and lifestyle of different type of people, from cross section of society; especially when they are travelling via road.

‘Highway’ begins with different people beginning their journey from Mumbai early evening, during daytime, taking different modes of transport and heading towards Pune. Among them is a couple travelling in their own car. Then, there is a TV actress, who is on her way to attend an event of a Political party in a private vehicle hired by an event manager, for the purpose. We also notice one NRI waiting at the airport for his private air conditioned vehicle to be taken to Pune to see his father for the last time. On the way, he is requested, much against his wish, to offer lift to an injured man and his wife.

Then, we also notice a Lavani performer travelling along with her aunt in a regular sharing taxi, with two co passengers. There is also a nagging wife who is a domestic servant, travelling along with her husband, who is jobless. Then, there is a woman belonging to so called high society, picking up a young masseur, to take along with her to Lonavala to massage her body. Likewise, there is a family travelling in a tempo along with their household goods, three suspicious looking people boarding a truck on their way to some unknown destination and a father travelling along with his little son in a State transport A/c bus.

All these people don’t know each other , but some of them meet each other, when the flow of traffic on the highway comes to standstill at Khandala Ghats, due to major mishap ahead. Usually, in a Road Movie, we notice happenings before the journey, during actual journey and at the end of the journey. `But, in this film, we see the film concluding during the journey break itself, as the writer and director wanted to pay attention on different characters. And, they have succeeded to a great extent. The idea of the film maker was clear. He perhaps wanted to brand this film as commercial film and hence two popular actresses from Bollywood were chosen.  They played  the roles of TV actress( Huma Qureshi)  and a rich woman (Tisca Chopra),respectively, to display their actual lifestyle. The youngster played by Shubham accompanying Tisca Chopra was to represent today’s youngsters, willing to do any  job, for good money.

Among the other characters, the character of Lavani performer played by Mukta Barve, was very natural. So, was the couple played by Sunil Barve and Vrishali Kulkarni. Both were perfect representation of a busy company manager and his demanding pregnant housewife. In the role of an event manager accompanying the TV actress, Shrikant Yadav generated  the required humour, through his Hindi mixed with Marathi, while conversing with his guest. Kishore kadam was wasted in this film, as he didn’t have to do much, except for listening to his nagging wife, played by Chaya Kadam, who had more than required scope, in this film.

Girish Kulkarni was very impressive in the role of NRI and he did well to speak Marathi with that typical foreign accent. The director however spent more than required time on Girish conversing with  Renuka Shahane, while her injured husband asleep, after taking a sedative. There is no doubt that the film maker wanted to show their emotions during conversation; but, it lasted a little longer. Instead, he could have had some more scenes, like the family in tempo serving milk less tea to stranded passengers. The film however,  concludes well, unveiling the  mystery of the bag carried by three suspicious passengers in a truck .  Good support also comes from Vidyadhar Joshi, Kishor Chougule, Mayur Khandge & others. There is not much scope for music in this film, except for background music. But, the sound design is good. Photography by Sudhakar Reddy, needs appreciation.

All in all, ‘Highway Ek Selfie Aarpaar’ is a good movie for a change, as besides a different theme in Marathi, tried for the first time, you get to see wonderful performances of all talented artistes.

MAIBOLI new,Marathi Humor Music Channel

Maiboli channel offers rare Marathi films

MAIBOLI new,Marathi Humor Music ChannelDid you know that Vikram Gokhale, Mohan Joshi, Laxmikant Berde,   Dilip Prabhavalkar, Sandeep Kulkarni, Sharad Ponkshe, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Atul Parchure and Neena Kulkarni, Ila Bhate had performed together in a Marathi film ? This was revealed by Maiboli channel, when they telecast this film last Sunday. It was a good film, on the backdrop of  1993 bomb blasts  by terrorists and riots happening in Mumbai, thereafter.

The film showed how the terrorist group demanded the release of  one of their leaders arrested  by Mumbai Police, by kidnapping the son of  the Minister. It was an action packed film, almost going on the lines of any big banner Bollywood film, with all the renowned talented Marathi artistes performing together . It gave an impression that the film was held up for release,  due to sudden demise of Laxmikant Berde. But, watching this film on television, was a pleasure, as it was a rare Marathi multi starrer film. Otherwise, we don’t have much choice to watch Marathi films, which are repeated several times.

Last week, we also saw the artistes of a new Marathi film invited as guests in the programme ‘Comedy Chi Bullet Train’ on Colors channel. It was probably, part of their film’s promotion. If it is so,  we have another programme to promote upcoming Marathi films. By the way, Zee Marathi’s programme ‘Chala Hava Yeu Dya’ went for a change, last week, when we found them paying tributes to social activist late Narendra Dabholkar, whose second death anniversary coincided on that particular day.

Late Dabholkar’s daughter and son were present during this programme and the their team and regular artistes of this programme, presented skits to remind the administration  that the killers of the renowned social activist were still not arrested. The programme created awareness about the fight against superstition. The volunteers of  ANiS through their touching performance, indicated that their movement against superstition had gained more strength now.

Do you notice some similarity with the characters of Sharayu and kamla from ‘Kamla’ serial with  Mhalsa and Banu in ‘Jai Malhar’? The similarities observed are, the first wife is from a well to do urbanite family and the second one from a rural background. The first one is very possessive  about her husband, while the second one is submissive. Their respective husbands have to do balancing act, for making both wives happy.

Four years ago, Producer Dinu Pednekar and writer director Girish Joshi presented a suspense filled Marathi commercial play ‘LoveBirds’, starring Amruta Subhash and Aniket Vishwasrao. But, the shows of this well presented play, could not be carried on later, due to some technical problem. Now, actress Mukta Barve has not only revived ‘LoveBirds’ in the capacity of a producer, along with Dinu Pednekar; but, has also performed the lead role of Devika, in this play. However, keeping in mind the modern outlook, the end of this play has been changed this time, by writer director Girish Joshi.

The gripping story of this suspense filled thriller revolves around Devika (Mukta Barve) , a housewife, whose ad film maker creative husband Vishwas Inamdar (Omkar Govardhan) , meets with an accident and suffers from amnesia after the operation. Since, his face is damaged in the accident, he also undergoes plastic surgery. So, Vishwas has to believe, whatever his beloved wife tells him about the happenings in his life. All goes well, till Vishwas goes to office and inquires with his office secretary Supriya (Ketaki Saraf), about the bill of Purchase of Love Birds . The owner of the pet shop Niranjan Sane (Vidyadhar Joshi) is then asked to explain about this deal, over phone. But, Niranjan prefers to visit the office of Vishwas, in person, to explain Vishwas, his real profession. Then begins the real thrilling drama, on the stage.

lovebird Marathi Play, Mukta Barve, VIdhyadhar Joshi

Writer director Girish Joshi has very cleverly presented this suspense filled plot, to keep the audience engaged for about 2 and half hours. He has made clever use of AV presentation, to show the past happenings through flashback. He takes the break for interval, at the most appropriate time, to generate more interest among the audience. The play has become effective, because of the wonderful performances by all the four important artistes. The presence of one more character of Abhijeet is made to believe, most of the time, which is the skill of the director. Set design by veteran Pradeep Muley, also needs a special mention, as he has used the colour schemes very well. The perfect light and sound effects have helped to create the desired impact, in this suspense filled drama.

Mukta Barve is at her best in the role of Devika. She has been able to display her changing emotions very cleverly, like a versatile professional actress. It is because of her spontaneity, the play has become more appealing. Nevertheless, good performances also come from upcoming actor Omkar Govardhan (‘Nilkanth Master’ fame), who has been able to portray the confused lead character effectively and of course Vidyadhar Joshi, who has shown that a good actor, always needs a good role and an efficient director to exploit his full potential. Ketaki Saraf is the common factor in the original and this revived version of the play. Therefore, she had to be perfect and natural in her performance, as office secretary.

‘Love Birds’ is a ‘never to be missed realistic drama, which offers suspense filled entertainment.

‘Dhinchak Enterprise’ delivers a timely social message

dhinchak Marathi Movie
Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio/presenter: Box Office, Love Production
Producer: Charmi Dinesh Gala
Director: Nishant Devidas Sapkale
Writer, Screenplay : Nishant Devidas Sapkale
Music: Samir Saptiskar, Kashi Richard
Director of Photography:  Udaysingh Mohite
Editor: Devendra Murudeshwar
Genres: Drama

Cast:   Bhushan Pradhan, Manava Naik, Khursheed Lawyer, Ashwini Ekbote, Resham Tipnis, Jayant Savarkar, Anant Jog, Saksham Kulkarni, Jaywant Wadkar

Feature films are actually a good medium of education. Besides entertaining the audience, it is always better, if the film maker, delivers a social message skillfully, through his script. Marathi films are known for that and there are few Marathi film makers, who have succeeded in passing an effective social message, through their award winning films. Now, young film maker Nishant Sapkale has also made a sincere effort, through his debut Marathi film ‘Dhinchak Enterprise’, released this Friday.

The title of this film sounds funny, indicating that it would be a traditional comedy film. But, it is not so. Director Nishant, who has himself written the story of this film, has presented a sensible theme, inviting the attention of the audience, to cheating and frauds done by some people in the name of social work. The film has focused how the young marketing executives are used by some people involved  into fraudulent activities, for making big money.

Vishal Patil ( Bhushan Pradhan) is a young ambitious salesman, working for a health product company. Soon, he is joined by an equally hardworking fresher Meera Tandel ( Manava Naik), Being MBA (Marketing), she is required to take field training first, from Vishal. as a member of his group. Both fall in love with each other. But, one day, Vishal is sacked from the company, as he misses his important meeting with clients, in the process of helping a middle aged woman, who meets with a road accident. Vishal receives support from Meera and his other close friend Jignesh ( Khursheed Lawyer).

When Vishal, Meera & Khursheed meet at road side tea stall, the same evening, Vishal narrates them an idea of starting a marketing company. They succeed in this business, making huge profit of Rs. 8 Core at the end of first year. But, during one such meeting with a prospective donor, Vishal comes to know that the photograph published by the parent company, is that of a dead child, who has already passed away after succumbing to cancer. This happens on the same day, when Vishal is supposed to visit Meera’s house, to meet her parents, with a marriage proposal.manva naik actressLeaving aside his personal commitments, Vishal goes in search of other beneficiaries, whose photos appear in the folder published for the purpose. During his investigation, he discovers many more things. So, instead of lodging a police complaint, he shuts down his company and finds other way to expose this corruption. How, he does it, is all that the film goes on to show through its gripping screenplay in the second half. The film concludes in a different way, avoiding the predictable climax. And, this is the best part of this film.

Director Nishant, who is only 27 years old, has very skillfully handled this timely issue, delivering a social message. His selection of important characters, is very apt. Bhushan Pradhan has now become a very matured actor and he has proved it through the role of Vishal. He has been able to display his changing emotions very well, at different situations. Manva naik, who is a versatile actress, has played her role, with full responsibility. Khursheed lawyer, has tried his best to display good humour through his role of Vishal’s close and always helpful friend. But, Hindi actress Moon Moon Datta has been used as a show piece for adding glamour. Her limited role goes almost on the lines of Sushmita Sen in ‘Main Hoon Na’.

Good support comes from Meena Naik, who has played Vishal’s mother, Ashwini Ekbote, as Meera’s mother , Resham Tipnis, Jayant Savarkar, Anant Jog, Saksham Kulkarni, Jaywant Wadkar and others through their character roles. There are very few errors noticed in the screenplay; but, looking at the sincere effort of the film maker, they can be ignored. Uday Singh Mohite’s cinematography, Samir Saptiskar & kashi Richard’s music and Madhav Vijay’s most suitable background music, are the other plus points of this film.

‘Dhinchak Enterprise’ is a worth watch film, with a new subject, for all. It will certainly make you think, before donating blindly towards charity. ‘Always cross-check, whether the NGO is really involved in genuine work. Check the credentials. And, don’t just donate, only because, you are getting tax exemption’. is the valuable message this film has successfully passed on, to the intelligent Marathi audience.

Puja Thombre, Swanandi Tikekar

‘Dil Dosti…. ‘ should come out of the four walls

Puja Thombre, Swanandi TikekarThe most popular serial among youngsters, ‘Dil Dosti Duniyadari’ is content most of the time, covering the happenings, within the four walls of the house, where the friends live at present. For a change, we only see Reshma’s first house , Reshma buying vegetables on the road or once the group going to a restaurant. Actually, looking at the popularity of the characters, it is high time, they should move for outing, for trekking, picnic or so. Watching the expressions on their faces and body language, it also gives an impression that even they, desperately need outing.

When we saw our ‘Double Seat’ film pair, coming for promotion in one of the episodes of this serial, it gave an impression that the friends will have to make some alternate arrangement, for their accommodation. But, that did not happen. It was just a fun. One can understand about the situation of the friends coming together after a tiring day, at this place. But, there is always a Sunday, which they can use for outing together.

In ‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’, we see Shekhar offering shelter to a stranger little notorious boy, in his house, much against the wish of his female family members. . But, instead of sending him to school or putting him in a good boarding school, he is encouraging him to do the work at home. Last time, this boy, was shown selling old bhangar items, in front of their house. Isn’t that encouraging child labour ? By the way, the boy doesen’t look like an Orphan. And, he is too loud, with his Bambaiya accent, which is commonly seen in Bollywood films.

‘Nanda Soukhyabhare’ seems to be going ‘Runji’ way. At least, the initial episodes indicate so. Just watch the characters in this serial and the happenings, especially, the behavior of street smart Swanandi. Hope, it does not repeat the same ‘tit for tat’ attitude between Saas and bahu after her marriage.

Now, talking about Jui played by Mrunal Dusanis in ‘Asa Saasar Surekh Bai’ , we find her almost in the second lead, with lot of importance being given to her sister. Also, the character of an educated youngster played by Santosh Juvekar, is shown, believing in what his fortune teller uncle advises him. Otherwise, he is shown a self respected person. Well, we all know, that finally he is going to marry Jui; but, how long he is going to tolerate Jui’s arrogant sister ? Let us wait and see.
