‘Aamhi Doghi’ takes Marathi Cinema to greater heights

Movie: Aamhi Doghi
Rating: ★★★1/2 Genres: Drama Censor: U Duration: 138 min. Studio / Presenter: Everest Entertainment, White Swan Producer: Puja Chhabria DOP: Milind Jog Director: Pratima Joshi Cast: Priya Bapat, Mukta Barve, Bhushan Pradhan, Aarti Wadagbalkar, Kiran Karmarkar Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
This week five Marathi films have been released simultaneously, which is a new record. But, the best pick by us has been ‘Aamhi Doghi‘, for the only reason that two most talented actresses of Marathi cinema were working together in this film. And, both of them did not disappoint us, as far as the acting part was concerned. However, the versatile actor like Kiran Karmarkar also invited all the attention, with his superb performance through his most important lead character of Advocate Jagadish Sardesai.

‘Aamhi Doghi‘ stands out because of its strong script, which is based on the story of Late Gauri Deshpande, which focuses on the relationship of two women of totally different culture, coming together due to peculiar circumstances. Making her debut as director Pratima Joshi with the help of Bhagyashree Jadhav has tried her best to give a perfect cinematic look to the story, using her creativity through many scenes. The film flows so well till the interval that the audience gets totally involved with the happenings which are filled with humour. However, in the concluding part, few scenes involving Saavi and Ammi are stretched more than required, which is the only weakness of this film.
So, we find the father Advocate Jagadish( Kiran Karmarkar) and daughter Saavi( Priya Bapat) generation gap widening, as the daughter goes through three important stages of her life in absence of her mother. Right from her childhood, teenage to post graduation stage the film presents the changes noticed in her behaviour. Saavi finally decides to leave her father’s house on attaining maturity, to pursue her independent career, instead of carrying forward her father’s well set profession. But, before that a new woman in the form of Ammi ( Mukta Barve) walks into their life. Initially, feeling uncomfortable with her presence, scholar & ambitious Saavi focuses her attention on her studies before moving out of the house, to face the world independently.

The screenplay of ‘Aamhi Doghi‘ film does appeal with some realistic happenings and some of the outdoor locations have been shot very well by cinematographer Milind Jog. Music and background music of Mangesh Dhakde is apt for this narrative tale of young Saavi. Art director Sumeet Patil and costume designer Manasi Atarde make their presence felt through their brilliant work. What impresses the audience most are the performances of lead artistes Kiran Karmarkar, Mukta Barve and above all Priya Bapat, who finds plenty of scope to display her acting skills very realistically. Their emotions are clearly noticed through their prompt expressions in every scene. They receive good support from other important artistes Bhushan Pradhan, Aarti Wadgabalkar & Prasad Barve, who have performed very naturally. All in all, it’s neat and clean film which keeps the audience involved into the story. Don’t miss it.

Mukta had to learn knitting to prepare for her role in ‘Aamhi Doghi’

Many a times artistes have to take special training in some art, to prepare themselves for a particular role in the film. In the case of actress Mukta Barve, she had to undergo special training in knitting, as her character Amlaa in the forthcoming Marathi film ‘Aamhi Doghi‘ demanded the same. Mukta, who is otherwise a very committed artiste, learnt this technique in a short time to make her character look more realistic.
‘Aamhi Doghi‘ film presents the story of two friends and Mukta’s friend is played by other talented actress Priya Bapat. Presented by Everest Entertainment, this film is now all set to release on 23rd February 2018. Through this film, actress & costume designer Pratima Joshi is making her debut as a director. ‘Gachchi’ presents an unusual plot in a creative manner
![]() |
Movie: Gachchi
Rating: ★★★ Genres: Drama Censor: U Duration: 120 min. Studio / Presenter: Landmarc Films, Nitin Vaidya Productions Producer: Nitin Prakash Vaidya, Vidhi Kasliwal DOP: Riju Das Director: Nachiket Samant Cast: Priya Bapat, Abhay Mahajan, Anant Jog, Asha Shelar, Mayureshwar Kale, Saiddhant Samant, Swapnaneel Jaykar, Tushar Tengale Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
‘Gachchi‘ which actually means terrace is defined in different ways in English language. Some call it a patio, while others call it an open area in front of the house. It could also be a sitting area next to the building. But, in Mumbai, where there is shortage of space in front of the house or in the backyard, it indicates open space on top of the building or bungalow. Now, this so called ‘Gachchi‘ could be used for various purpose. Though students living in crowded chawls, have used this place to prepare for their exams, some love stories have also taken birth at this place. For others, it is a place for breathing fresh air. At the same time, there are cases of suicides noticed at this place.
Perhaps, based on such happenings, Producer Nitin Vaidya and director Nachiket Samant thought of making a film on the backdrop of this place, which is presented by Vidhi Kasliwal. The story of this film ‘Gachchi‘ takes off, when we see young Shreeram(Abhay Mahajan) desperately trying to repay the debt to a money lender Jagtap( Anant Jog) who is trying to take charge of his small house in South Mumbai, mortgaged to him. With the help of his friend and a well wisher, who agrees to market the home products prepared by his mother ( Asha Shelar), he manages to repay part payment to Jagtap. But Jagtap puts a deadline till evening only to repay the entire amount.

In a disturbed condition he walks out of Jagtap’s building to sip a cup of tea without sugar( as he is diabetic),when he notices a young woman standing at the edge of the terrace of that building. Suspecting a suicide attempt he goes to the terrace top and finds Keerti Sharda( Priya Bapat) a classical singer by profession, also in a disturbed mood. Initially, both of them don’t like each other; but as the time progresses, these two strangers start understanding each other. Writer Yogesh Vinayak Joshi and director Nachiket Samant have very creatively developed the an unusual happening during that particular day, into an interesting feature film of about two hours. The writer & director have also tried to show the connect between two elements of nature- Earth and Aakash through Gachchi ( terrace) the backdrop of this film.
There are not too many main characters except the few mentioned above, but still you don’t feel the monotony while watching the screenplay of this film on the screen, with the lead pair wearing the same clothes from morning till evening. Almost 90% of the film has been shot on the terrace of a multi storey building in Lalbaug area, which has now grown into a posh township with high rise residential towers and office premises. But still, DOP Riju Das, has made good use of his camera to capture every corner of the terrace and surroundings skillfully. There is not much scope for music by Murugan Mohan in this film, except for one song played in the background. Good support comes from technical team. There are very few errors noticed in this film, but looking at the ability of the writer director to make a film, arising out of such a situation, these few errors can be ignored.
Priya Bapat has played the lead role of Keerti very convincingly to display her disturbed state of mind, while Abhay Mahajan who after doing a successful web series, makes a confident looking debut in the lead role of Shreeram. There is not much scope for Asha Shelar, except for performing in few scenes, as a kind hearted mother of Shreeram. Similarly Anant Jog does well in hardly two scenes to his share. All in all, ‘Gachchi‘ is good film to watch.
Priya and Abhay promote their film ‘Gachchi’ through a song

Every film maker tries something different to promote his film. Now, producers of film ‘Gachchi‘ Vidhi Kasliwal and Nitin Vaidya along with director Nachiket Samant have launched a song rendered by lead pair Priya Bapat and Abhay Mahajan. The video of this specially shot song has been receiving good response from viewers on social networking sites. This song penned by Omkar Kuilkarni has been composed by music directors Avinash-Vishwajeet.
Both Priya and Abhay seemed to have enjoyed singing this song, which is evident from their enthusiasm noticed in the video. According to the makers of ‘Gachchi‘ film, this song will connect with all those who love to spend time on their terrace. But, they also feel that this song will also create attraction about the terrace in the minds of people, who have never experienced the pleasures of terrace. Incidentally, this film has been shot on the backdrop of terrace.
Big expectations from Mukta and Priya starrer film ‘Aamhi Doghi’

We are all aware of the capability of actress Mukta Barve, when she performs before camera or on the stage. Her outstanding performance in national award winning film ‘Jogwa‘ is still fresh in our memory. At the same time, how can we forget the splendid performance of actress Priya Bapat in another popular awards winning film ‘Kaksparsh‘? So, when these two talented actress are working together in the same film, it becomes a big news and there are big expectations from such a film.
Incidentally, both Mukta Barve & Priya Bapat are working together in forthcoming Marathi film ‘Aamhi Doghi‘. The first poster of this film was unveiled recently, with the announcement of film’s release date as 16th February 2018. Highlight of this women oriented film is the debut of Pratima Joshi as director. Pratima has worked as actress, costume designer and assistant director till now and this film will open new innings for her. Speaking about her film, Pratima Joshi said that this film’s story will touch the hearts of every young woman and they will feel it as their own story. Everest Entertainment’s Sanjay Chhabriya who is producing and presenting this film , feels that this film will be a treat to Marathi film lovers.
