Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

So many films have been made in the past, which were inspired by Agatha Christie’s best selling world famous novel- ‘And Then There Were None’, which had sold over 100 million copies. A film was also made with the same name, which was an adaptation of the novel. But, when a stage play was attempted in UK, with the name ‘Ten Little Niggers’; few changes were made in the script. The stage play continued in USA, thereafter, with the title ‘Ten Little Indians’.

In 1965, Raja Nawathe directed a Hindi film ‘Gumnam’, which was also inspired by this English stage play and not the original novel, as in the original novel, all the guests in the bungalow get killed and the man behind the killings, finally ends his life. Now, we find a new Marathi film, also inspired by the English play ‘Ten Little Indians’, which was also based on Agatha Christie’s creation. So, we find eight strangers coming together on an island to find their accommodation in a bungalow, surrounded by dense forest. They are welcomed by a Butler ( Sanjay Narvekar) and his wife ( Poonam Jadhav) who attend to them.

Aeb Review
Ankush Choudhari, Ashach Eka BetawarDuring their first dinner itself, a recorded message accuses each one of them of the crimes committed by them. They all question the butler, asking him about the man behind the scene. When all of them are convinced that like them, even the Butler has been invited to serve them; they start suspecting each other. As the mystery remains, two of them are found murdered, one after the other, little before interval. Before that, the director takes time to narrate in brief the lifestyle of Mumbai through the voice of Nana Patekar, since all these people belong to Mumbai. He also takes you quickly into the flashback, showing the background of six of the guests, while they are travelling in an imported motor boat, on their way to the island.

At the stroke of interval, there are six guests left, besides the Butler and his wife. Aakash( Ankush Choudhary) and Ameeta (Madhura Velankar ) being treated as lead pair, come closer during this period; while the bar dancer Shabana( Sai Tamhankar) becomes the favourite of DD (Yatin karyekar). A doctor (Sanjay Mone) and a professional criminal ( Kamlesh Sawant) are looked upon as suspects, in this mysterious drama. As the screenplay progresses, you find at least two twists in the screenplay of this film; only to surprise you in the climax about the man behind the killings.

Chintan Mokashi’s screenplay possesses the required strength, to create the desired impact in this captivating murder mystery, which is new to Marathi cinema. His dialogues with Sanjay Pawar also create the combined effect of fear and humour, according to the changing situation. The character of Sanjay Narvekar has been cleverly used to nullify the continuous effect of terror. Director Sanju Hinge has done a brilliant job in generating anxiety after each murder sequence, for which he deserves compliments.

The background music and sound effects have been well paced in this film to generate curiosity at every stage, especially after interval. The film has only three songs composed by Milind Joshi, out of which two songs in Hindi are picturised on Shabana, during pre interval stage .The third one is played in the background, immediately after interval. Editing work by Kshitij Pavaskar and Abhijit Girulkar is good, compared to the Hindi version ‘Gumnam’ based on the adaptation of same play. The cinematography by Raju K.G. is very effective to create that desired impact, at every moment in the film.
Among the artistes, Ankush Choudhary, Madhura Velankar, Sai Tamhankar , Yatin karyekar, Sanjay Mone and Sanjay Narvekar find better scope to display their acting skills, at different situations. Kamlesh Sawant finds some scope in three scenes; but talented actors like Sharad Ponkshe and Mangesh Desai are treated like guest artistes in this film. The same is the case with Ponam Jadhav .

The plot in the film is gripping, though it has some resemblance to 1965 Bollywood film ‘Gumnam’; which is also inspired by Agatha Christie’s creation. The reason for the assembly of guests is different. By the way, the Bikini scene of Sai hasn’t been there in ‘Gumnam’, as the Bollywood actress Helen was shown in Mini skirt at the beach. One good thing is that, the makers of this film have admitted that they were inspired by Agatha Christie’s work. Now, how you give treatment to this subject in cinematic format, is all that important and makers of ‘Ashach Eka Betavar’ have succeeded in offering their best to Marathi film lovers. It’s a well presented murder mystery. Finally, what Agatha Christie had said, has a point here. “Every murderer is probably somebody’s old friend.”

Sanjay Narvekar to play ‘Fakta Saatvi Pass’

Sanjay

Versatile actor Sanjay Narvekar is playing the character of Devidas Nigal, in the forthcoming Marathi film ‘Fakta Saatvi Pass’ based on a real life story of this character. Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

If you are under the impression that Marathi films cannot do commercial business as Bollywood films do, then latest Marathi film ‘Fakta Ladh Mhana!’ would prove you wrong. This action packed thriller Produced by Mahesh Waman Manjrekar and directed by Sanjay Jadhav offers all that, a hit Bollywood film posesses. It contains all that masala or in other words the perfect formula to make a film hit. Only drawback is that it is full of violence going on the lines of a typical South film. But, then we should not forget that most of the hit Bollywood films are a remake of those hit Masala South films.

Don’t be surprised if Mahesh Manjrekar decides to do a remake of his own film with top Bollywood actors prepared to play the five man army. Yes, you may give this another name to ‘Fakta Ladh Mhana!’, so much is the impact created by these five finest actors comprising of Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav, Aniket Vishwasrao, Santosh Juvekar and Sanjay Narvekar from the Marathi film industry. They combine well to form that team under the leadership of their Don- Babubhai played by none other than Mahesh Manjrekar

Sanjay Khapre Mahesh Majrekar

In today’s existing situation, our own politicians have turned villains of the common man. Therefore, the film needed a strong character to perfrom the role of a shrewd Minister and his cunning brother. And, there wouldn’t have been a better choice than going for talented Sachin Khedekar and Sanjay Khapre respectively. The film begins with the sad state of affairs in a village, where politicain turned Industries Minister Patil and his brother with the help of local politician Kulkarni ( Vaibhav Mangale) make the lives of poor farmers miserable forcing them to sale their lands after the SEZ comes into force.

The only opposition comes from an ex-seviceman (Satish Pulekar) who refuses to bow down. He is murdered by Kulkarni and his men but his mentally challenged nephew is the mute witness against Kulkarni. His helpless uncle after witnessing the thumb rule, rushes him to the city in search of an elder nephew( Bharat Jadhav) of the ex-seviceman. Thus begins the revenge. The five man Army comprising of those sharp shooters belonging to the gang of Babubhai then proceed to the village. Some of them carry funny names like West Indies, Kanfatya and Paani Kam ( the little boy who serves tea to the five man army).

Not realising the power of the Minister, the Five man army confront directly with Minister’s brother and Kulkarni, only to be trapped by the shrewd Minister. When they are about to leave the village, another tragedy occurs, when they all swear to finish off the trio comprising of the Minister, his brother and kulkarni one by one. How they plan it and execute it is all that we see in the second part of the film full of action and thrills. As someone has rightly said, “Kuch Paaneke Liye kuch khona bhi padata hai”; the five man Army put up a brave fight against the corrupt system of the Minister forcing him to resign. The film does not end there, as a thrilling climax awaits for a sweet revenge.

Cinematographer turned Director Sanjay Jadhav has cleverly combined this action film with few scenes of emotions besides ccreating that required humour through Sanjay Narvekar and Siddharth Jadhav. Both of them time well with their dilaogues, during tense situations. Bharat Jadhav has a serious type of role having lost his love to Minister’s brother. But, his arguments with Aniket Vishwasrao ( Alex) are well knitted into the screenplay. Aniket plays the character of Alex with full commitment. Above all, it is Santosh Juvekar who impresses in the character of Salim. In one particular scene he tries to explain the difference between a sharp shooter and a terrorist and captures the attention of all.

Kranti Redkar finds a totally different role in this film and she does her part well. Sachin Khedekar, Vaibhav Mangle and Sanjay Khapre play the negative characters with authority. Hemangi Kavi has little for her share, but she plays that small role with total dedication. Amruta Khanvilakr and Manasi Naik have been used to offer a Lavani and Mujra respectively to complete the formula.Vishakha Subhedar finds that small role of Munnibai during the Mujra. The newcomer young boy plays the mentally challenged character well. Dialogues are well written but at many places the Censors have blown their whistle. Mahesh Majrekar as portrayed a Don in his own style.

The film is fast paced, hence not giving much scope to the viewers to question as to how the five man Army manage to move from their hide out to the city and back during the heavy police vigil. But, surprisingly, film has clearly hinted a revolution in this country, if the politicians cross their limits. On the whole, ‘Fakta Ladh Mhana!’ is a complete package filled with that required masala to draw sizable crowds. But, those who deslike violence and bloodshed , should keep themselves away.

Brave Mohaan Aawatey’s fight against injustice

Story, Music & Producer: Aniruddha Kale
Director: Subhash Kale
Cinematographer: Anil Xavior
Choreographer: Phulwa Khamkar
Cast: Sanjay Narvekar, Siya Patil, Vinay Apte, Ashok Shinde, Kamlakar Satpute
Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

“On the edge of destiny, you must test your strength.” Aniruddha Kale and Subhash Kale’s new film ‘Mohaan Aawatey’ which is based on this viewpoint, is an action packed story of a common man whose life takes a new turn after coming to the city of Mumbai from a village in Maharashtra. Not like many others who come to Mumbai only with dreams of becoming rich , Mohan like a typical Maharashtrian youngster, joins his elder brother’s business of cycle repairing in a small shop in central Mumbai; only with an intention of helping him.

Mohaan (played by Sanjay Narvekar) is otherwise happy and contended with whatever God has given him. Like any other youngster of his age, he too falls in love with a charming flower vendor- Gauri (Siya Patil). He does all that mischief in love and even sings and dances with her around the trees. He also works sincerely in his brother’s shop. But, there is also a good quality that he possesses and that is, he just cannot tolerate injustice in society. Whether, it is somebody snatching chain of a woman or somebody trying to threaten someone using muscle power. He would then go all out to help such people in trouble. It is this quality in him, is noticed by the chawl owner Premjibhai (Prasad Pandit) where his brother’s shop is located.
Soon, destiny brings a sudden change in Mohaan’s life. Highly impressed by his gutsy behaviour and honesty, Seth Premjibhai, who has other big business of Forwarding and Clearing agency, appoints Mohan in-charge of the same. He also pays him handsomely and also offers him a bungalow to stay. But, as they say; when you are showered with Good things, something bad is bound to happen. Mohan too, goes through a bad phase. “Prosperity is a great teacher; adversity is a greater”. So, when he recovers, he teaches a lesson to all those politicians and their goons in their own style. It’s like tooth for a tooth and eye for an eye. In the process, he gets public sympathy and with the help of that he defeats the main politician in his own constituency.

Sanjay Mohan Aawate

So, what’s so great about this film with such a theme? The difference between Mohaan Aawatey and many other action filled films, whether in Marathi or Bollywood is that, this film before its start, openly admits that it is based on a true story of a true person. Nowhere it is stated that it is a work of fiction. And that commitment itself gives the film more realistic look. Generally, people enjoy watching true stories. The screenplay and direction by Subhash Kale is good and so is the story of Aniruddha Kale. One duet and the title song penned by Supriya Kale were enough to go with the film’s script, however, the inclusion of two additional songs applies break to otherwise thrilling screenplay.

The film’s screenplay, especially after interval has been largely inspired by bollywood style angry young man’s courageous show. You can witness Mohaan dragging the villain and Minister Vinay Apte, resembling to Amitabh Bachchan dragging Madan Puri or Sudhir in Deewar. The way he fights at a time with a big team of goons of the Minister, he reminds us of Sunny Deol’s Ded Mann ka haath. Moreover, the way he takes the revenge, it clearly indicates that there is no role of Police in the film. But, leaving apart these few flaws, the film’s presentation has been very good. In fact, it is a well presented Marathi film with good background music and equally good performances from all the artistes.

Sanjay Narvekar playing the title role, fits perfectly into that character of an honest turned angry young man. He has different shades to present through his character. Initially, he is a simple, shy, honest and romantic hero and in the later part of the film, he turns into an angry young man followed by a shrewd person using his diplomacy to defeat his enemy. Siya Patil as Gauri is impressive through her limited role. Kamlakar Satpute and Suhas Paranjape as Mohan’s brother and sister-in-law respectively, are remarkable and so are Vinay Apte and Ashok Shinde as selfish Politicians. Ramesh Wani and Prasad Pandit support well. Photography by Anil Xavier and background music by Anirruddha Kale go well with the film’s screenplay.

More attention has been paid on the post production techniques. The film is likely to invite attention of action film lovers and those who enjoy watching true stories.

Music & Website launch of Mohaan Aawatey

Sanjay

Music and website launch of Aniruddha Kale‘s new film ‘Mohaan Aawatey’ was held in a grand way at Kohinoor Hall, Mumbai on Tuesday evening. While film’s director Subhash Kale and Singer Swapnil Bandodkar released the Music CD, the hero of the film, Sanjay Narvekar released the official website of the film, which has been designed by Honeybee Media. Aniruddha Kale’s parents felicitated the singers, lyricist, writer and the director, on this occasion. The leading lady of the film Siyaa Patil, couldn’t make it for the function, as she was shooting for another film in Pune.

It was for the first time in a music release function of a Marathi film that so many questions were posed by the scribes, to know the details about this film, which has been based on a true story. Why the film’s name is ‘Mohaan Aawatey’? Who is Mohaan Aawatey and so on . Initially, Sanjay tried to create humour stating that they may address this character by whatever name, they thought was suitable. ” All that we want to present is a success story of a person, to inspire others,” he tried to explain. But, finally, the producer had to intervene and explain that the person on whose life the film has been made did exist, but he preferred to remain away from limelight. “We have added some scenes to suit the cinematic presentation of this real life story and I am sure you will all enjoy this action packed musical thriller,” he said.

There are total five songs in the film rendered by Swapnil Bandodkar, Devki Pandit, Dr. Neha Rajpal and Javed Ali. Lyrics by Supriya Kale , Milind Joshi and Aniruddha Kale, while Music by Aniruddha Kale are the other credits  Supriya Kale, Aniruddha Kale, Sanjay Narvekar, Javed Ali

Sanjay Narvekar

Sanjay Narvekar, Actor

Sanjay Narvekar is one such actor who fits into any role with his spontaneity, at any given situation, be it stage or in front of the camera. This versatile actor has already proved his ability as a solo hero and also in supporting roles with the same enthusiasm and vigor. Sanjay’s forthcoming film ‘Mohaan Aawatey’ has invited the attention of one and all, for his author backed role in the film. Here, he speaks about his role, in a chit chat with MMW.

Sanjay NarvekarQ: When you signed this film ‘Mohaan Aawatey’, were you impressed with the story or your role ?
A: I accepted the role, because the script of this film is based on a real life story. It’s how an ordinary person, who is not even educated, advances step by step with his progress in life to reach his ultimate goal, merely with self confidence and hard work. His struggle in life, impressed me. Moreover, all the co-artistes in film were best. In fact, I found it a perfect project.

Q: Will ‘Mohaan Aawatey’ bring a new change in your life ?
A: For an artiste like me, every role is like a debut. Every time, it gives us a chance to improve further. Therefore, even this role is likely to bring some change in me.

Q: In this film, you are playing a central character. What do you have to say about that?
A: Yes, I am playing a central character. But, this role is about a boy, who comes from a very poor background that too having lived in a village during his childhood. He comes to Mumbai, leaving his school studies halfway. His real journey begins only after his arrival in Mumbai. But, it is because of the other characters around him that the central character gets importance.

Q: Can we call it a ‘One man show’ ?
A: No, not at all. No film can be called a ‘One man show’. Even if, one person is a writer, director and actor; there are others too, who make this production complete. To say about this film, it belongs to everyone, right from the Spot-boy to the Distributor. Only because, the film’s name is ‘Mohaan Aawatey’ and that I am performing that title role, does not mean that the credit should go to me.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Known for his Police detection stories, writer Shrikant Sinker had also written in the past a play ‘Aaliya Bhogasi’ based on a team of mentally unstable people in a mental asylum, who only think of their past profession and enact their skills all the time. Producer Mahesh Manjrekar, perhaps got inspired with that play, while projecting his characters through his new film ‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’, which also revolves around 5 such mentally unstable characters( Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav, Ankush Choudhary, Vaibhav Mangale & Sanjay Narvekar), who are being treated in his own way at a private Mental asylum by Dr. Subodh ( played by Mahesh himself) , attached to that asylum.

Mr. Manjrekar known for his offerings on sensational subjects, this time thought of moving into comedy and hence selected this performance oriented film with the sole motive of entertaining the audience. Directed jointly by Atul kale and Sudesh Manjrekar, the producer has himself got involved into the screenplay and dialogues in the company of Abhijeet Deshpande and Sanjay Pawar. There is nothing much seriously happening into the screenplay, except for theose mischievous acts by the five characters , which only encourage competition among themselves. It only looked like that the directors had during the pre-interval stage had given complete freedom to them, resulting into overacting by atleast two characters.

Ankush Chaudhari
It was only after interval, it gave an impression that the director duo had taken total control of the film. The happenings in the film clearly indicate that each character had his own share to display talent under a given situation, which was nothing but pose mentally disturbed and perform an act to look more natural in that condition. And, this experiment succeeds only to a certain extent in post interval session comprising of 55 minutes. The film does not pay much attention on the past history of these characters, except for Bharat Jadhav, whose past incidence has been shown for proving him mentally unstable. The total length of film is just nearing two hours, a perfect length, as further extension would have certainly taxed the audience.

‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’ is a male dominated film, as the three girls namely Manva, Kranti and Poorva play just show pieces and have been rightly used in the climax scene as item girls. Manva makes her appearance just at the stroke of interval, while Kranti comes in almost towards the end of the film. Most of the scenes in the film are based on ‘mind act’ done by each character and among them Sanjay Narvekar invites all the attention for his cricket gimmicks that go very well with his body language. His character also springs a surprise in the climax, thus turning him into a real hero.

Watching the performances of other artistes, Bharat Jadhav, Vaibhav Mangale, Ankush Choudhary and Mahesh Manjrekar himself are all within their limits, except for Siddharth, who has been controlled in the second half, avoiding dialogues for him. Kamlakar Satpute, playing the gay Don is just fine; nothing exceptional about his performance, as we have seen such characters on the screen in the past. Since the film has Bollywood flavour, he reminds you of Kulbhushan Kharbanda in ‘Shaan’, but doesn’t look dangerous. Among the three doctors from the asylum playing villains, Kishore Kadam is impressive. Others in the supporting cast have done well, but Santosh Juvekar has been wasted in that ordinary looking side role.

There isn’t much scope for music in the film, except for the so called item number in the climax, where lavani has been performed in a different style. The background music sounded loud pre interval, but has been used well in the later part of the film. Cinematography by Ajit Reddy is good . The film is likely to impress the kind of audience who enjoy watching TV shows like ‘Comedy Circus’ and ‘Fu bai Fu’, as this film is based only on performances to entertain the audience with a given theme.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Someone has rightly said that there is a fine line between coincidence and fate. Samarth Art Innovative’s new Marathi film ‘Aatapita’ tries to draw this fine line, when Ashutosh (Bharat Jadhav) who dreams of becoming a writer decides to make Nandu (Sanjay Narvekar), the hero of his story. Nandu works in the recovery of loan department of a bank. Writer- director Uttung Shelar who has conceptualized this unusual plot, has however left it to the audience to decide whether the happenings in the film are just a coincidence or it’s the destiny of the person.

‘Aatapita’ is a simple tale in the day to day life of two individuals, presented in a tricky manner to keep the audience on the hold till the climax, when it finally concludes with a surprise. It’s a totally different experience in Marathi films, as such themes are generally observed in Marathi dramas. But, the director has given a better treatment to the plot, using the adaptability of the two excellent actors, who bring liveliness to every scene. Moreover, the dialogues by Prashant Loke, obviously help add a special flavor to the screenplay, which is based mainly on these two characters .

There isn’t much scope for lady members in the film and therefore the so called leading lady Vibhavari (Ashwini Apte) has been included more as a showpiece to play the girl
Bharat Jadhav, Sanjay Narvekar, Aatapita
friend cum would-be of Nandu. It is for this reason, you find her looking different in every scene she is part of. Music too has less scope in this film with three songs placed before interval without any specific purpose. The music director -Sanjeev Kohli therefore through his background music tries to make his presence felt , with the usage of strange sounds, never heard of before and it is very difficult to understand the purpose behind it.

However, based on the overall presentation, ‘Aatapita’ looks more realistic, because it does not deviate from the main plot. There are not many outdoor locations, yet Prasad Bhende captures some best moments through his lenses. With light make-up used on the artistes, he has managed the close-up shots well. The sound quality and editing is satisfactory.

Aatapita Bharat Sanjay

In the film, Ashutosh is shown as an employee of Municipality’s water department, but instead of focusing on his job, the director has paid more attention on his passion for writing. On the other hand, he has shown some strange happenings in the life of Nandu , to support the theme well . There are few fun filled scenes, on the role played by recovery agents and their understandings with the concerned bank’s executive.

Being a character oriented film, both Bharat Jadhav and Sanjay Narvekar have plenty of scope to display their skills at variable situations. Satish Pulekar in his guest appearance offers variety through his limited role. But, it is Girish Salvi, who steals the show. Pradeep kabre is seen after a long time, while many other characters are new faces, but they support well in the cast. ‘Aatapita’ has a bizarre limited tale, but is well presented, to suit the requirements of big screen.

Movie Review by: Sandeep

J. K. Movies new marathi film ‘Target’ is an action filled political thriller with a dose of youth angst. The story is about five idle friends Sanjubhai (Sanjay Narvekar) who thinks he is a ‘bhai’, Anky(Ankush Chowdhary) a builder’s son, who is a skirt chaser, Swapnil(Swapnil Joshi) -politician Vishwasrao’s (Vinay Apte’s) son, who is disillusioned with his father, the Home Minister of the state finding no time for his family,Sattar( Siddharth Jadhav)- a meat shop owner’s son with a penchant for the handycam and Paddy (Bhushan Kadu) -a pizza delivery boy.
These boys become friends with three girls played by Kranti Redkar, Tejaswini Pandit and Smita Gondkar after a lot of minor tiffs. Once, they attend a rave party in a farmhouse in a jungle, where a cop (Vivekanand Gore) tries to arrest Swapnil for drugs possession but then all the friends run helter shelter in the jungle and then they see a child sacrifice being performed in the jungle and then chance upon another boy who is kidnapped.
Kranti Redkar

They rescue him but the bad guys are after them and whether they survive in the jungle and get the villains into jail and solve the ‘sacrifice’ mystery is the plot of the film.
The film moves at a brisk speed once the characters are established and the adventures captured in the jungle are really thrilling. Director duo Vivekanand Gore and Rajesh Kolan give the film a kind of ‘LOST’ series look and those umpteen teen campus drive-in movies that were a rage in the US in the 80’S. The political angle is a much repeated track.

The performances by the artistes are good, especially Kranti Redkar and Sanjay Narvekar. Swapnil Joshi plays a serious type of role with conviction. The cinematography by Sandeep Patil is slick, especially the jungle sequences. Cameos by Vinay Apte and Sanjay Mone are impressive. The item number by Manasi Naik was unnecessary. The music by Jeetendra Kulkarni and Abhijeet Kavthalkar is not up-to the mark.

The editor Sarvesh Parab could have used more pace in the first half. In all, the film will appeal to the youth and is good for a lazy evening hangout, when you need the air-conditioned ambience of a multiplex.
