There have been many Marathi films during the past 10-15 years, set on the backdrop of farmers’ suicides in Maharashtra. And, most of these films have only shown the helplessness of farmers, which forced them to commit suicides and thereafter the difficult time faced by their family members, waiting for the government compensation. Through most of these films, we only saw the film makers blaming the Government. But, the latest released Marathi film ‘Ringan‘ instead of highlighting the routine problems, shows the way to all such helpless farmers, through the story of a typical modern day farmer Arjun Magar ( Shashank Shende) who is a widower and his only little son Abhimanyu( Sahil Joshi).
What writer director Makarand Mane has tried to show through his lead character Arjun is that though on the verge of losing his land due to heavy debt amounting to Rs. 1 lakh, he decides to repay the loan amount to the sensible money lender, who not only waives one year’s interest, but gives him one year’s time period. With his little beloved son, he proceeds to nearby holy town of Pandharpur. He really works hard there to make his little son happy, but cannot meet his regular demand of bringing back his departed mother.
In the first session, the film ‘Ringan‘ moves very slow, with not many interesting happenings, except for the struggle of father and son to settle down in the new township. But, in the post interval session, we find many well wishers coming forward to understand their difficulty. Very skilfully, the director has incorporated some humour filled happenings, as well as emotion filled scenes to give a different look to this film. No wonder, the film has won national award for best Marathi film in 2015. Luckily, the film has also found a distributor, which has enabled the film makers to reach out their subject to the masses with their timely message.
Through his excellent cinematography Abhijit Abde was able to give proper visual impression to the sensible tale of a farmer and his son. The sound design is also impressive and the audience get the initial feel of it in the opening scene of the film. In the lead role of Arjun, Shashank Shende is at his best, displaying the perfect body language and expressions throughout the film, in every important situation. His acting in the most important scene of confession, speaks a lot about his potential. In the role of Abhimanyu , debutant Sahil Joshi has been handled very well by the director. Good support comes from character artistes like Suhas Shirsat, Umesh Jagtap, Ketan Pawar and others.
Overall, the film ‘Ringan‘ is good, but should have been made more interesting in the first half. Certainly a worth watch, for those love to watch sensible artistic films and inspiring for all those helpless farmers and their families.

‘Babanchi Shala’ artistically deals with a distinct social issue
Rating: ★★★ ½
Genres: Drama Censor: U/A Duration: 130 min Studio/presenter: Idea Entertainment Producer(s): Vilas Mane, Umesh Nathani Director: R. Viraj Writer: Neela Satyanarayan Music: Soham Pathak, Kamlesh Bhadkamkar, Neela Satyanarayan Cinematographer (DOP): Ankush Birajdar Cast: Sayaji Shinde, Aishwarya Narkar, Shashank Shende, Kamlesh Sawant, Chhaya Kadam, Arti More, Umesh Bolake, Milind Adhikari, Kartik Chavan, Manjula Khetri, Kavita Chavan, Shreyas Raje Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Known for their strong levelheaded subjects, Marathi films have gone worldwide, through screening at various international film festivals. Our progressing country is in urgent need of thoughtful democratic reforms. And, our feature films can play this important role, of passing a social message. New Marathi film ‘Babanchi Shala‘, presents the story written by Neela Satyanarayan, a former IAS officer from Maharashtra. Directed by R.Viraj, who gave us variety of films like ‘Shyamche Vadil ‘, ‘Sangharsh‘ and ‘Vajlach Pahije Game …’ the film is inspired by V.Shantaram’s memorable film ‘Do Ankhen Barah Haath‘ made in 1957. The only difference is that in the old film, the Jail warden tries to rehabilitate the dangerous prisoners released on parole, while in the latest film, the Jailer goes out of his way, to rehabilitate those prisoners, who are not hardened criminals, but have committed a crime for the first time.
The story of this film revolves around Mahipat Ghorpade (Shashank Shende) who murders his nagging wife, who keeps on abusing him, for spending money on educating their only little daughter Sonali( Gauri Deshpande). One day, when his wife with the support of his mother in law, enter into an argument over the same issue, Mahipat locks his wife inside a room and murders her. He later repents his mistake, as he is taken to custody. After going to Jail, Mahipat has to leave his little daughter behind, at the mercy of others, who ill treat her. Sonali, later undergoes a trauma. But, she timely receives helping hand from a social worker Neeta Satam ( Chhaya Kadam), who persuades Jailer Shrikant Jamkhede(Sayaji Shinde), to arrange a meeting between father and daughter, after almost six years.
Initially, reluctant to accede to such a request, the Jailer and his wife ( Aishwarya Narkar) face a strange happening in their own life too. And, this changes the outlook of the Jailer. He not only tries to understand the trauma that Mahipat undergoes, but also the situation faced by few other prisoners in his jail and their family members. He submits a plan to Home Minister, through social worker Neeta Satam; about his scheme( Babanchi Shala) to rehabilitate such prisoners. But, it gets rejected. Going out of his way, he plans to implement his plan, in his own way. He partly succeeds in it. But, one of the prisoners, foils his plan, resulting into inquiry against Jailer and Neeta Satam .When the jailer is suspended, he continues with his good work with the help of the social worker, in extension of her services.
The film sends across a good message to the society, which in general, is not ready to accept the children and relatives of such prisoners, with any favors. Through different characters and emotion filled sequences in this film, the writer and the director have shown, how the life of family members also gets affected. Good presentation of screenplay, well suited dialogues to all the characters and above all wonderful performances by Sayaji Shinde, Shashank Shende, Chhaya kadam, Kamlesh Sawant and others, make this film a worth watch.
To nullify the effect of seriousness of the film’s subject , the director has cleverly offered some humor filled dialogues to Kamlesh Sawant, who plays one of the jail inmates, Babu Sakpal. Music by Soham Pathak & Neela Satyanarayan is apt, to meet the requirement of the subject. Don’t compare this film with V.Shantaram’s ‘Do Ankhen Barah Haath’, as it has offered something more, to make the audience think, in terms of reforms in the jail. All the prisoners are not terrorists. Majority of them are guilty of crime committed by them, for the first time. And therefore, the rehabilitation of their relatives, during their jail sentence, would help in contributing something to the society.

‘Khwada’ takes you on a rough journey with shepherds
Rating: ★★★
Studio/presenter: Chitraksha Films Producer: Vitthalrao Nanasaheb Karhade Writer, Director: Bhaurao Karhade Music: Rohit Nagbhide Director of Photography: Veerdhaval Patil Editor: Roshan Patil Genres: Drama Censor: U/A Duration: 125 Min. Cast: Shashank Shende, Anil Nagarkar, Bhau Shinde, Surekha, Yogesh Dimbale, Rasika Chavhan, Vaishnavi Dhore, Chandrakant Dhumal, Prashant Ingale, Vaishali Kendale, Amol Thorat, Hemat Kadam Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Marathi films have shown us rural Maharashtra, highlighting the problems of drought affected areas and suicides of farmers. But, we have neither seen the lifestyle of shepherds nor their rough journey for survival. Latest released Marathi film ‘Khwada’- ( Obstacle), which has won two national and five state awards, not only shows the exploitation of these poor shepherds; but, also shows, how the helpless young lot of this community, revolts against the administrators, when the injustice becomes unbearable.
Producer director Bhaurao Karhade, who has shot this film with many new faces, has opted only for one known face from Marathi films, Shashank Shende. The film is set on the backdrop of the outskirts of villages in Pune district, with focus on a family of shepherd community, which is always on the move, to find feed for the herd of their sheep, their only belonging. Raghu( Shashank Shende) , the head of the family, does all the work of taking good care of the herd of his sheep, with the help of his two sons, one of them Panda, who is married with wife and two children and the other, who is a bodybuilder youngster Balu( Bhau Shinde) . The two ladies in their family cook food for the family in the open. In fact, the living condition of this community is clearly shown by the director, through this film.
The screenplay of the film moves in a natural way, showing how the family fix the marriage of Balu and how the family becomes helpless, when the corrupt village administrator, cheats them, by picking up lambs from the herd, as and when required, without paying them. The film takes a sudden turn, in the post interval stage, when young Balu cannot stand to the harassment by the village administrator and turns a protagonist in the concluding part of the film.
During the entire film, it is one actor Shashank Shende , in the role of Raghu, steals the show, with his brilliant performance, with superb body language and use of perfect dialect, suited to his character. In his presence, Bhau Shinde has done his best to make his presence felt. Anil Nagarkar plays the cruel villain in Bollywood style; but has impressed with his performance. Good support comes from the other newcomers. There are only three fight scenes in the film and they are very natural. In fact, it is because of the perfection in sound design, usage of their language of communication between all the characters, selection of real locations and the perspective of the film maker, The film leaves a deep impact on the audience.
From the start till end, the audience imagine themselves, as part of the film; with director taking them on a rough journey, along with shepherd family. There are few flaws in the film’s screenplay. The period of this story, signifies present days, showing use of mobile phones by the family. But, the filmmaker has avoided the police and the media, over happening of serious matters. The Village head, who plays the villain in this film, represents the ‘One man rule’. But, the villagers are shown literate, reading news papers. Therefore, whatever happens in climax is not very convincing, considering the present time. The filmmaker does give a hint at the end of the film that he would return with a sequel, in 2017, showing some members of the family migrating to Pune city. So, we will have to wait for Part 2, to know more about the progress of this community and change in attitude of the administration.
Certainly, not a film for the masses; but those who like to watch realistic films on the lives of poor and oppressed people, shouldn’t miss this film. It throws light on Government’s apathy towards the shepherd community and warns all those corrupt and atrocious village administrators, about the revolt from the poor, when things become unbearable for them. Last but not the least, the efforts of the film maker, on making a film on this subject, have to be appreciated.
