‘Bhootatlela’ is a horror comedy directed by award winning director Shivaji Lotan Patil, in which Priyadarshan will be playing the lead role of Rayaba opposite Surabhi Hande, who plays the role of Shivani. The story of the series revolves around a happening in the life of Rayaba before his marriage to Shivani. During the marriage rituals, Rayaba sees the ghost in the form of Sudha following him and that reminds him about forgetting something to carry with him, as suggested by his mother.

Along with Priyadarshan an Surabhi this series also stars Yogesh Shirsat, Sunil Holkar and Sayali Patil in prominent roles.

This time through his latest film ‘Vajvuya Band Baja’ he will be offering light entertainment. Highlight of this film is that after winning National awards for the film ‘Halaal’, Laxman Kagne and Shivaji Lotan Patil are coming together once again. Speaking about his entry into film making, Mr. Laxman Kagne said, “Films are mirror of reflection of society and therefore through a film there can social awareness very effectively. There are many topics which need to reach out to the people and in just three hours a film is able to communicate the message to thousands of people at a time.”

This film is about to release soon, but till now the names of the artistes haven’t been disclosed. But, one thing is sure that there will be three couples who are eager to get married. And they are all well known artistes. Screenplay-dialogues by Nishant Nathram Dhapse, cinematography by Nagraj Diwakar and music by Vijay Gatlewar are the other credits of this film.

We are all aware that Marathi film ‘Halal‘ has been inviting all the attention prior to its theatre release, mainly because the film throws light on exploitation of Muslim women under the pretext of Talaq(divorce). Produced by Amol Kagne and directed by National award winning director Shivaji Lotan Patil, this film has already received appreciation at various international film festivals.

Recently during the teaser launch of ‘Halal‘ film, many renowned personalities like Amol Palekar, Dr.Baba Adhav, writer Sanjay Pawar & President of Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal Mr. Shamsuddin Tamboli were present on this occasion. Written by Rajan Khan, the film ‘Halal’  is all set to release on 29^th September 2017. The film stars Chinmay Mandlekar, Pritam Kagne, Priyadarshan Jadhav, Vijay Chavan, Chhaya Kadam, Amol Kagne, Vimal Mhatre & Sanjay Sugaonkar in lead roles. Cinematography by Ramani Ranjandas and music by Vijay Gatlewar are the other credits of this film.

Now days, women oriented subjects in Marathi films are inviting attention of the film lovers. And, if they are based on realistic subjects, the critics also acclaim such films.  Forthcoming Marathi film ‘Halal’ has already won the best screenplay award at Pune International film festival. The film also received good response at Aurangabad International film festival, where it was screened, recently. The film will now be screened at Sanskruti Kaladarpan Film festival, having been shortlisted among 11 films, for the final round.

Directed by National award winning film director Shivaji Lotan Patil, the film deals with the theme of loyalty, love and the institution of marriage, which is deemed to be pious by society.  It is also a story of human emotions, which depicts the trials and tribulations the women in our society have to go through. Starring Chinmay Mandlekar, Priyadarshan Jadhav, Pritam Kagne, Vijay Chavan, Chhaya Kadam, & Vimal Mhatre.  Produced by Amol Kagne and Laxman Kagne the script of the film is written by Nishant Dhapse.  DOP is Ramani Ranjandas, editing by Nilesh Gavand & Music by Vijay Gatlewar are the other credits

There have It is very difficult to know the reason for delay in releasing this path breaking Marathi film ‘Dhag’ during the year 2013, when the film had won National award for best direction and in best actress category, besides receiving special mention of the Jury for the child artiste, in March 2013. But, if this film was released last year, it would have made a big difference. However, it is always ‘better late than never’.

‘Dhag’ is now finally released this week. Produced by Vishal Pandit Gavare and directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil, the film was also highly appreciated by the critics at 2012 PIFF and Goa Int Film Fest. It also received the appreciation of Jury, including Academy awards winner Resul Pookutty. The film had also received appreciation from dignitaries like Saie Paranjape & Shabana Azmi. Last year, the film had won 6 awards in Ma Ta Sanman

Needless to say that ‘Dhag’ is an off beat Marathi film, which revolves around a teenager Krishna (Hansraj Jagtap), living in a village with his father Shripati (Upendra Limaye), who operates at the only crematorium in that village. Mother Yashoda (Usha Jadhav) a housewife, an old Grandmother and a younger sister are his other family members. Krishna doesn’t seem to be interested in carrying forward the family tradition of managing a crematorium and hence prefers to study at a village school. He even does a part time job at a juice centre, besides attending school, when he finds that his family is facing financial crisis. However, the harsh comments from his teacher about his family’s profession, forces him to drop out of the school.

The film goes on to show how Krishna’s family is solely dependent on the money earned during the last rites performed and hence, when there are no deaths in the village, Shripati has to find some temporary work at his friend- Mangya’s workshop. Still, he doesn’t get paid for his services, as his friend’s wife is ill and bed ridden. One day, Shripati dies of snake bite and the whole family is traumatized. Mangya takes care of the family; but, Krishna and his mother are hesitant to approve his help. Krishna’s grandmother also warns her daughter-in-law about Mangya’s intentions of being so generous. When Krishna hears their discussion, he realizes his duty at that time. So, he steps into his father’s shoes; and also starts attending school for a better future.

‘Dhag’ is a very realistic and thought provoking film. Director Shivaji Lotan Patil, who had earlier directed a sensational film ‘Vaavtal’, offers this sensible subject . The film has one national award winning actor Upendra Limaye and with Usha Jadhav also winning the national award for best actress, for her performance in this film; whatever praise about their performances will be less. Usha has already received compliments from Bollywood, with her selection in ‘Bhootnath 2′ in presence of Amitabh Bachchan. Upendra has limited scope; but, he has impressed through his role. Moreover the director also having won the National award for best direction, goes on to say everything about his excellent work. But, the talented child actor Hansraj, who also received special mention from the Jury at the last national awards, deserves all the praise.

The performance of this child artiste, is more appealing in the film. Good support also comes from supporting artistes Nagesh Bhosle, Suhasini Deshpande, and Neha Dakhinkar . Excellent presentation of Screenplay by Nitin Dixit, good cinematography by Naagraj, perfect editing by Nilesh Gavand, suitable music composition by Aadi Ramchandran and Amit Gupta’s sound design have added value to this thought provoking film, which is a ‘must see’ for all.

Marathi films are opting for more and more realistic and bolder subjects, which is certainly a welcome change. The latest released film ‘Wavtal’ has been shot on the backdrop of post Babri Masjid demolition riots, that rocked Mumbai. Based on the novel ‘K-5’ written by Anant Samant, ‘Wavtal’ narrates the tragic tale of a newly married housewife, who becomes a victim of the sudden break out of violence in Mumbai.

Ms. Mankar (Tejaswini Pandit) is on a visit to Mumbai along with her husband from Konkan district of Maharashtra and the couple arrive as guests at CM’s bungalow. Needless to mention that her father in law and CM are having their close political connection. After the check up at a clinic, while the couple is returning back home, their car travels through the lane affected by riots and they are attacked by a group of terrorists who beat up the husband and kill the driver. Ms. Mankar is abducted by the leader of the attackers- Rehmat Khan (Mukesh Tiwari) who takes her to his hideout and uses her as his keep. He tortures her so much by inflicting injuries on her feet that she is restricted to bed only for his sexual pleasures.

When Rehmat Khan plans all his terrorist activities with the help of influential people in public life, the helpless woman is a mute witness. She does make an attempt to escape with the courtesy extended by the servant who attends to her, but she does not succeed.. When the pre plan of major riots is foiled by the police, with raids carried out all over Mumbai, Rehmat khan manages to flee to Pakistan leaving behind Ms. Mankar in the custody of his colleagues, who are advised to bring her along with them via Rajasthan border . Ms.Mankar who is carrying the child of Rehmat Khan in her womb, delivers the baby at the hideout of terrorists in a remote border village of Rajasthan.It is only when a Border security force team led by K-5( Ashok Samarth) on a tip off from a villager, raid their hideout and kill all four terrorists, she is rescued and brought to the camp hospital.

Then begins the formality to make her speak about the terrorists with whom she lived almost for a year. Ms. Mankar agrees to reveal everything only in presence of the hero who rescues her. So the Commandant ( Vinay Apte) persuades the commando K-5 and gets all the information from the woman. When the time comes for the woman to return home, the Commandant receives a letter from her father-in-law about their inability to accept her. He also receives an order from his chief to send the woman to a rehabilitation centre at Delhi. K-5 who is proceeding on leave to his home town, is given the job to drop her at Delhi . But, he takes her to her home only to remind her father-in law about his duty. But, when he sees no hope, he himself proposes her to accompany him to his own house.

The film ends with happy ending, which is predictable but it fails to fulfill the desire of Ms. Mankar who while talking to K-5 expresses her last wish to kill Rehmat Khan. And that wish remains unfulfilled, as being a helpless woman she cannot on her own take up a battle for the head of a terrorist who shatters her life. Instead, she has to satisfy herself for having got the most courageous man to support her and her child in the rest of her life.

Produced by Balasaheb Argade- Patil and directed by Shivaji Patil, the film does succeed in creating a realistic horrifying incident in the life of a woman but nowhere in the film her character is offered the courage to defend herself. The film only narrates the pathetic tale of a woman instead of inspiring the audience. At one point of time, the director does give an indication that she may once again come across Rehmat Khan while she and k-5 are shown waiting at the deserted platform in Rajasthan village, to board the train. It would have been better, if the film had shown his return and K-5 killing him in the climax.

Looking at the performances of the artistes, they have all done well. But, the script has given more importance to Ashok Samarth playing K-5. His interactions with his Commandant – Vinay Apte and the woman’s father –in-law Sunil Shende, clearly indicate the importance given to this character. There is no doubt that he has played his role well. Mukesh Tiwari’s character has also been given unnecessary importance for all those cruel acts. Tejaswini Pandit has given a wonderful performance but her character is shown helpless throughout the film. The technical areas of the film are well managed. Photography is too good, especially the locations shot in Rajasthan. Background sound effect is also good. There is not much scope for music but the background score is good in few sequences. The film is realistic, well presented but still looks incomplete.
