Known for their ‘out of the box’ subjects, Marathi films have already established their identity as story based films, all over the world. Latest Marathi film ‘Lost and Found‘ produced by Vinod Malgewar and directed by Ruturaj Dhalgade also falls in this category. The film does begin well, with its focus on finding a solution to drive away loneliness from the lives of people from different age groups, living in cities.
‘Lost and Found‘ begins with Manas( Siddharth Chandekar) a youngster running a small provision store in the city of Aurangabad, facing a break up from his girlfriend Mugdha( Gauri Konge) who prefers a well to do partner for her secured future. Dejected Manas does open his mind to a senior citizen Shrirang Kaka ( Dr.Mohan Agashe) living in his colony. Shrirang Kaka who is also living a lonely life, suggests Manas to form a group to voluntarily help people living in loneliness, by sparing some time with them. Another dejected person Maruti( Mangesh Desai) who has lost his family in an unfortunate accident , also joins the group, along with Naina( Spruha Joshi) a young lady, whose husband has left her a month after her marriage, for no reason. Few more youngsters also join the group.

The volunteers do succeed in their mission of counseling all such people; but in the process, Manas understands Naina better and Naina falls in love with him. Maruti who goes for counseling a young lady ( Tejasvi Patil) suffering from a serious ailment, likes her company. Shrirang Kaka encourages them all to spread their network beyond Aurangabad and we find them crossing the city limits to make their ‘Anti Loneliness Programme'(ALP) effective. And, they all succeed in their mission.
‘Lost and Found‘ is a sincere effort by director Ruturaj Dhalgade, but, he could have made it more interesting. At few places, he fails to go into details of the victims of loneliness. A young girl, who has a break up with her boyfriend, over a small issue, speaks her mind to Manas for the entire day till late evening. But, nothing is clear about her family, as she lives in a bungalow. Also, the episode of a Bengalee lady living a lonely life, is left incomplete. There was no need to show the episode of a struggling non Marathi actor from North. Instead, it would have been better to show a youngster from Aurangabad, struggling to become an actor in Mumbai. That would have brought the audience more closer to this character. The film hasn’t shown how the volunteers generate income to do their selfless service to the society. Moreover, it set on the backdrop of Aurangabad city, but you don’t get to see the much of city life, captured by camera.
Music by Shubhankar Shembekar is just fine to go with this kind of film and so are the lyrics of Spruha Joshi. Cinematography by Ramesh Bhosale is good. All the five important artistes in this film have given their best through their respective characters. But, Dr. Mohan Agashe invites all the attention. He has given an energetic performance, bringing lots of humor, through almost all the scenes which have come to his share. The film scores on account of its different subject and good performances.
‘Lost and Found’ all set to release on 29th July

Marathi film makers are keen on presenting new subjects and one such subject is being presented by writer- director Ruturaj Dhalgade, through his forthcoming Marathi film ‘Lost and Found‘. With the depression rate on the rise, all over the world, he has offered a story on how loneliness disturbs a person’s life. Through this film, he has offered a solution on what could be done to find solution to this problem. Actually, the story of this film, which is a love story, begins from loneliness of both the individuals played by Siddharth Chandekar and Spruha Joshi, the lead pair.
The other artistes of ‘Lost and Found‘ film comprise of Mangesh Desai, Tejasvi Patil, Dr.Mohan Agashe and others. Actress Spruha Joshi has herself written the lyrics of the songs in this film, along with Dr.Rahul Deshpande, with the music provided by Shubhankar. Foreign actresses performing prominent roles in Marathi films, is not new to us. In the past, we have seen Billiana Rodonich, Stacy Bee and Suzanne Bernert playing suitable roles in Marathi films. Now, Canada born Paula McGlynn also makes her debut in Marathi, through latest released film ‘Pindadaan‘. But, the story of this film seems to be the only reason to offer her this role of Ana.
The film revolves around Ashutosh Devkar( Siddharth Chandekar) , director of documentary films, attached to Chanel 6 in London. On a special assignment given by his chief, Ashutosh arrives in India to make a film on the post death rituals i.e ‘Pindadaan‘, along with his camera person cum editor friend Ruhi ( Manava Naik) , from his London office . When they arrive in India, they proceed to a place in Maharashtra, on the banks of a river , where such rituals are performed.

The private vehicle driver Tukaram( Sanjay Kulkarni ) engaged by them not only acts as guide, but acts as a waiter in a hotel, which is converted from a old palace into a hotel. In short, Tukaram is all in one, to help them. But, Ashutosh forgetting his work, falls in love with a young foreigner lady Ana (Paula McGlynn) , whom he meets on the banks of the river, during early morning hours and nights. Ruhi, who is in deeply love with Ashutosh , is ignored by him, in spite having sexual relationship with her.
Not happy with the behaviour of Ashutosh, Ruhi decides to return back to London, when she notices some strange happenings. Rudra Baba, the local priest ( Madhav Abhyankar) who silently observes Ashutosh and the change in him, finally speaks, revealing the truth .
Director Prashant Patil has tried to develop Avinash Ghodke’s story into cinematic form. But, he has failed to generate that desired impact, required from such subjects. Even the story is not very appealing, as we have seen such themes in many films of the past. The screenplay of ‘Pindadaan‘, also gives clues about the happenings to follow, right from the beginning of the film. However, good performances by Siddharth, Manava, Paula, Sanjay Kulkarni & Madhav Abhaynkar are worth appreciating. Siddharth has a different look, but, Manva has cleverly used the right accent, to suit her NRI status; while Paula does her best to speak Marathi . Though the film is limited to around 2 hours length, you still feel that something went missing in the screenplay.
There was not need to have so many songs in the film, as they take away the interest of the audience from the happenings to follow. Music is just average. But , the background music and sound designing is impressive, with good support from art design. Bunty Deshpande has done his best to capture the day and night scenes, especially on the banks of the river. All in all, ‘Pindadaan‘ presents mystical but predictable love story. And hence, this film has turned out to be just an average film, with nothing extra ordinary to deserve better rating.

Marathi film makers are opening doors for TV artistes

The journey of most of the talented artistes in the acting field, has been from stage to television and finally the feature films. The best examples are artistes like Vikram Gokhale, Nana Patekar, Reema Lagoo, Usha Nadkarni, Shivaji Satam, Ramesh Bhatkar, Amruta Subhash, Sunil Barve, Subodh Bhave, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Siddharth Chandekar and so on. But, now days, some of the artistes directly get into television and films, through modeling , auditions or various reality shows, held to select the best acting talents. And, if you have to be into films, you have to be an all rounder, with acting plus dance skills. Therefore, female artistes in particular are equipping themselves, by learning different forms of dances, besides acting.
However, the general observation for the past few years is that our Marathi film makers have given scope to many television artistes. Right from Sai Tamhankar, Tejaswini Pandit, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Abhijit Khandkekar, Siddharth Chandekar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Santosh Juvekar, Aditi Sarangdhar, Mukta Barve, Umesh kamat, Priya Bapat to Spruha Joshi and so on; everybody found suitable roles in Marathi films.
In the recent past, Mrunal Dusanis also found roles in Marathi films, after her successful career on television. Suyash Tilak has also found roles in films and so have Bhushan Pradhan and Sankruti Balgude, the popular pair of ‘Pinjra’. Very recently, we saw Vaibhav Tatwawadi finding good offers from Marathi films. ‘Swapnanchya Palikadle’ TV actress Gauri Nalavade made a successful debut through ‘Friends’ that too opposite Swapnil Joshi. And now, popular Marathi TV actress Priya Marathe’s two films ‘Vighnaharta Mahaganapati’ and ‘1234’ are ready for release shortly. Isn’t that a good news for our television artistes?
