Synopsis

Classic film chronicles the life of Tukaram (17th C.), one of Maharashtra’s most popular saint poets, activating the 20th-C. resonances of his turning away from courtly Sanskrit towards vernacular rhythms of religious poetry which constituted the first major emancipatory movement against brahmanical caste domination. The episodic plot pits Tukaram against the Brahmin Salomalo, who pretends to be the true author of Tukaram’s songs while calling for his ostracization.

The successful run of the films like ‘Kaksparsh’ and ‘Tukaram’ clearly indicates what type of films the Marathi audience and others prefer to watch. There have been enough of comedy films in Marathi. Moreover, many of them have been a copy of Bollywood films or based on the same old themes tried before in Marathi during 80s and 90s. Why can’t Marathi film makers try out something different, to pose a challenge to Bollywood ? The Regional films in south have established their own identity. In Marathi cinema, the above mentioned two films have proved it, not bothering about their release time; whether it coincided with big banner Hindi film or not.

Marathi films like ‘Deool’, ‘Jogwa’, ‘Babu Band Bajaa’, ‘Mala Aai Vhaychay’, ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’, ‘Balgandharva’, ‘Shikshnachya Aaichha Gho’, ‘Lalbaug Parel’, tried something realistic; while some action films in the recent past like ‘Arjun’, ‘Mi Shivajiraje Bhosale Bolto’, ‘Fakta Ladh Mhana’ and few others, proved that Marathi films are nowhere behind Bollywood, even in technical matters.

Marathi film industry has the biggest advantage of having many talented stage artistes. They fit into any type of roles in films, as for them, performance is very important, rather than flexing their muscles. But, unfortunately, many talented artistes have wasted their caliber, performing in traditional comedy films made by all such film makers, for whom getting the subsidy from the Government has only been the motive. Many such films have come and disappeared in a week’s time. It is only when they are shown by some TV channels, people come to know about their release. By the way, why there was no Marathi film released last week and during this week, only film officially released i.e. ‘Saheb’ has found just one theatre in Mumbai that too in western suburbs, one in Thane and one in Navi Mumbai ?

Some film makers, taking into account the likes of young Marathi generation, who are net savvy and hardly read marathi newspapers; tried to make films of their interests, like music, romantic, etc; but even that didn’t work, to invite the young audience to the theatres. Best examples are recent films like ‘Satrangi Re’, ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha’ and ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai’, which did not draw the response from the target audience, as expected.

If Marathi film industry really needs to make progress with quality films, it’s high time that the Government of Maharashtra come forward with new incentive schemes, instead of the present subsidy scheme; to all those film makers, who succeed in inviting international audience and winning national awards. Let others do remake of Marathi films in their languages, instead of Marathi films attempting remakes of commercial Bollywood films. Today, we find some Bollywood film makers or Real estate people entering Marathi films as producers, because the Government offers subsidy. This is preventing the genuine talented film makers to come forward as producers.

We have many young talented film makers today, who are assisting reputed directors. If they are encouraged to make a film on a universal topic, let them get the assistance from the Government. A good script and delivering a message to the society in a realistic manner, is the need of the hour. It’s hard to believe that we are short of good script writers.

The reality behind the popularity of the literature of Sant Tukaram, the 17th Century saint and poet from Maharashtra was his thought provoking literature. It has been translated into 10 European languages, which itself speaks about his selfless service. In the year 1936, a Biopic made by Prabhat Film Company on this well known Saint, had invited attention from all over the world and the film was the first Indian film to receive award at 5th Venice International Film Festival. The film still remains popular and is subject of frequent studies.

Today, when people have turned to materialistic living, producer Sanjay Chaberia has dared to produce a Biopic on the famous saint, under the direction of Chandrakant Kulkarni and on the script of Ajit Dalvi and Prashant Dalvi. This film focuses on his life before sainthood, trying to cover his childhood with his family and later assisting his father in his traditional money lending business. Very cleverly, the director has tried to show the maturity of young Tukaram in understanding the poverty in his village, during drought and still managing to maintain a balance between his business minded father and the defaulters, using his diplomacy.

The film also goes on to show, how during that period of 17th century, the elders forced their children for second marriage, if the first wife failed to conceive. So, we find a firebrand young woman- Avali walking into the life of Tukaram in presence of his first wife Rakhma, who willingly agrees for the same, to make her mother-in law happy. Initially, Tukaram is not fully devoted to Lord Vitthal; as much as his brother Savji . In fact, as a child, he poses question to his father, as to why he has to travel on a pilgrimage in the form of ‘Vaari’ every year, to seek blessings of Lord Vitthal, when there is already a temple of the same Lord in their village.

A little before interval, the film shows the transformation of Tukaram into Saint Tukaram, when he leaves his house in search of peace and happiness for all those who suffer the drought conditions. The Saint’s poems and his Kirtans( devotional songs) gather support from devotees from different places, including Bramhmins. This disturbs some of the selfish Bramhins, who demand respect to their profession and feel that no other person from a lower caste has the right to offer kirtans. So, Tukaram is tried in the court of so called religious leaders; and asked to destroy his collections and prevented from writing any more lyrics. The caste discrimination occurring those days, is clearly shown through some of the scenes. But, the popularity of the Saint gathers support from the places around and the Saint is forced to break his 13 day fast.

Director Chandrakant Kulkarni has covered most of the important events in the life of the Saint Poet, starting with his childhood days, his young days, while assisting in his father’s business, post marriage tragic events faced by the family and later his turning towards devotion to God and selfless service to the society. The incidences of his advice to Bahinabai a Varkari female, who later turned a saint from Maharashtra, his encouragement to brave young man from village- Laxman, to join the force of Shivaji Maharaj and also his interaction with the Great Maratha Warrior, have been well captured. The wonderful photography by Rajan Kothari makes the film more appealing, with the proper selection of ideal locations and costumes.
Jitendra Joshi who portrays the popular saint, simply steals the show with his remarkable performance. His body language, dialogue delivery and changing expressions according to the situations, test his tremendous capacity as an actor. Sharad Ponkshe as Bolhoba Ambile More (Tukaram’s father) and Pratiksha Lonkar as Kanakai (Tukaram’s mother), impress with their astonishing performances. Veena Jamkar playing his first wife Rakhma and Smita Tambe playing his sister-in-law, have displayed their talents through those few emotion filled scenes, they have to their credits. Yatin Karyekar as Mambaji Gosavi, the orthodox Bramhin, succeeds in creating an impact through his negative role. Radhika Apte in the role of Aaavli, the saint’s second wife sounds very loud; but that must be going with the requirement of the script. She too has done a good job in the company of artistes like Vikas Patil, Madhav Abhyankar, Ravindra Mankani and others. Padmanabh Gaikwad as young Tukaram has also done a good job. This biopic, is a real tribute to the great saint of Maharashtra.
‘Tukaram’ is a timely release, when we find our own country’s administration surrounded by corrupt practices and the people of today getting used to such practices. Presenting the thoughts of the Saint into a cinematic format and reminding the message behind his meaningful lyrics, with suitable music compositions, this realistic film has turned out to be a real work of art.

For the past three days there has been a feast of selected Marathi films at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi. The occasion is Film Festival organised by ‘Sanskriti kala Darpan’ to shortlist the nominees for the best film and other individual awards for the year 2013. The Organisers had invited entries from the film makers, who released their films during the year 2012 in theatres or at the International Film festivals.

There are films like ‘Tukaram’, ‘Touring Talkies’, ‘Aayna Ka Bayna’, ‘Mokala Shwas’, ‘Balak Palak’, ‘Investment’, ’35 Minutes’, ‘Masala’ ‘Ajintha’ and ‘Dhag'( Blaze) which are being screened . But, the topic of discussion on Saturday evening was Usha Jadhav, the dusky complexioned girl, who invited all the attention after the screening of her film ‘Dhag( Blaze)’ made by Jayashree Motion Pictures and directed by Shivaji Loten Patil. Though the film revolves around a small boy played by Hansraj Jagtap; it is Usha Jadhav who has displayed her potential as an actress in that most difficult emotion filled role of his mother. The film also has Upendra Limaye playing her husband; but it is Yashoda played by Usha, who shoulders all the responsibility to carry the film forward in post interval session; till the end.
It would not be proper to disclose much about this film; as it is yet to be released. But, the film has received critical acclaim at Pune and Goa international film festivals. The best appreciation comes from ‘Kohinoor Ma Ta Sanman’, as the film has received 7 nominations in different categories, such as Best film, best direction, best actress, best supporting actor, best child actor, best screenplay and best editing. And, Usha finds herself eligible among the three actresses for the prestigious honour.

The girl originally from Kolhapur is not new to this entertainment field; as she began her career as a stage artist, while she was doing her job in Pune. Being passionate about films since her childhood; Usha shifted to Mumbai with a new job at Mahalaxmi and kept trying her luck giving auditions at UTV and other production houses.. She had already bagged prominent ad films like ‘Tata Docomo, Fevicol Muchwali, Head N Shoulders with Prieta Zinta, ICICI Bank with Sujit Sarkar, Idea with Abhishek Bachchan and so on. On the recommendation of a friend, she gave her audition for Madhur Bhandarkar’s film ‘Traffic Signal’ and bagged an important role of a young girl selling goods at the traffic signal. It was a good opening for her; as by that time, she had also bagged an ad with Amitabh Bachchan for the promotion of KBC.

Usha Jadhav, Actress
Usha has also worked under Deepti Naval’s direction for the film ‘Do Paise ki Dhoop char Aane ki Baarish’, with Chandan Arora in ‘Striker’ and her forthcoming Hindi film is ‘Cinema Ki Aankh’ where she plays lead opposite Prashant Narayanan (Murder- 2 fame) . But, at present, all eyes on the official release of her Marathi film ‘Dhag’, where her performance will appreciated by one and all. Usha has already received appreciation from people like Saie Paranjape, Shabana Azmi and Academy awards winner Resul Pookutty, who have seen her film during Goa and Pune festivals. Some have compared her with Smita Patil.

When we asked Usha about this comparison, she just smiled and said that she was a great admirer of late Smita Patil. She appreciated her performances in films like ‘Mirch Masala’ and ‘Arth’ but refused to admit that she had emulated Smita in ‘Dhag’. “I have just tried to be natural in my own way and would love to play such characters. I am just passionate about acting in films,” she concluded. Marathi Movie World wished this talented actress all the best and hoped that she walks away with ‘best actress award’ in forthcoming award functions.
