Sometimes, superstition does help a filmmaker to create the required humor, to entertain the audience . Kedar Shinde’s latest released film ‘Aga Bai Arechha -2′ is inspired by actor-writer Dilip Prabhavalkar’s one such story, which is based on superstition. Set on the backdrop of Goa, the film presents a story of a woman Shubhangi Kudalkar (Sonali Kulkarni) , who experiences strange happenings in her life, whenever she falls in love with a boy.

The film begins with a writer Vikram ( Dharam Gohil) approaching  Shubhangi, to share her strange experiences in life, to enable him to write a book. As Shubhangi narrates her every love affair, the audience is taken into flashback .This goes on till interval. And, we notice lots of humor generated through the screenplay of the film.

Sonali KulkarniDirector Kedar Shinde has very skillfully used all these men in the life of Shubhangi . More than Prasad Oak’s character of Pralhad Kismise, offering  a popular branded toffee, the characters played by Madhav Devchakke, a cricketer and Bharat Jadhav, an  insect lover,  offer good entertainment. The episode of the cricketer, meeting his beloved, played by Surabhi Hande (shown as college going Shubhangi) reminds us about the controversy on  Virat Kohli meeting his girlfriend Anushka during the break.

However, the film fails to impress much, in the post interval session, with not many interesting happenings noticed. Though the director has tried to give a twist in the climax, it has a predictable end. There was enough scope for the director to make the post interval session more interesting. But, he has taken a long time, dragging the love story of Vikram and Shubhangi .

Needless to mention that all the artistes have played their roles with total commitment, though the story  revolves  around the   central character played by Sonali Kulkarni.  Sonali  is sure to find her nomination for best actress award for the year 2015. She really looks gorgeous in most of the scenes with her slim and fit appearance. But, her thick make up gets clearly noticed, in few scenes, especially when she is shown infuriated. Siddharth Jadhav is in a guest appearance, playing an actor himself, performing at a  marriage event.

Kedar Shinde, who has always given scope to well known music directors, this time offers another promising music director Nishaad, who certainly  displays variety.  All in all, ‘Aga Bai Arechha-2′ is an entertaining film, which has cleverly combined superstition with humor. Nothing extraordinary; but, still a worth watch.

Aditi in ka re durava

Will Aditi follow the footsteps of Janhavi ?

Aditi in ka re durava

Accidents and hospitalizations  are very common in TV serials. We have seen this happen, in case of Janhavi in ‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi’. And, now we see Aditi from ‘Ka Re Durava’, meeting with an accident on road and being admitted to hospital. So, now there is a lot of curiosity among the viewers of this serial, whether she will also lose her consciousness, on the lines of Janhavi ?  If that happens, let us try to find out, what are the possibilities?

In the first case, she will be taken home by her parents. In that case, she may not even recognize her husband Jai. So, there will be plenty of scope for her Boss Avinash to come closer to Aditi. And, that is what her father would want to happen. Another possibility is that Aditi may declare in front of her Boss that Jai is her husband. But, is that possible in the serial, which wants to extend its screenplay for a longer period ?  Anyway, Let us wait and see, what happens in the coming week.

On the other side, ‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi’,  which had become terribly boring in the recent past , is slowly picking up, as the viewers would  like to see Janhavi back with Shree, with her mother getting exposed, for her wrong deeds. But, when will Bapuji played by Rahul Mehendale in ‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’ get exposed ? Well, it’s time for all the bad characters getting exposed. And, the best example was that of Mothi Aai getting exposed, in the serial ‘Runjhi’. But, she is still waiting for an opportunity to strike back.

As pointed out last time, most of the other serials are just passing  time, as the craze for IPL Cricket would reach its peak, for next few days. We are watching this happen in the case of Marathi films, which have also postponed its releases and so is the case with TV serials. The only option left with ongoing serials,  is to drag on with not so important happenings. Instead of finding promotion of films in some of the promotion based show, now we find the promotions of two or three Marathi dramas happening together. So, wait till 25th May, to watch all twists and turns to take place, in our Marathi serials

‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Zhale’ turns violent

Harish Dudhade, Swarada Thigale, Pictures

After showing the double role of lead actor Harish Dudhade, ‘Majhe MannTujhe Zhale’ serial on Colors channel, is now presenting some violence filled acts. So, actress Swarda Thigale has been sidelined, with the arrival of Rahul Mehendale, playing the prominent role of a fraud Swamiji, who is into illegal business, under the pretext of running an ashram for poor children. While Rahul shows his dominance through his character, we notice the original hero becoming his disciple, having blind faith in him. Isn’t that something strange, as the hero of this serial, is shown as a well educated person?

What is shocking is that in last few episodes, we saw the character of Swamiji cold bloodedly killing two persons, who came to know the truth about him. One doesn’t understand, how such a character, who is a criminal, has been hyped in this serial ? Isn’t that sending a wrong message? Serial makers and the channels have some responsibility , to see that such characters are not glorified. By the way, few months ago Rahul Mehendale who played a committed team leader of Maharashtra Police team, in the serial on the same channel ‘Jai Maharashtra Police..’ is now playing a criminal. Will it benefit him, if the same serial starts again with new cases?

During the month of May, every Sunday Zee talkies channel have started showing Disney cartoon films, which are dubbed into Marathi. Instead of showing these foreign cartoon films, it would have been better, if they had shown Hindi cartoon films based on Indian mythology, by dubbing them in Marathi. At least, that would have offered some knowledge to the little children. Many popular Marathi artistes have played dubbing artistes for the cartoon characters. But, don’t think our little viewers will be able to identify their voices.

There are no interesting happenings noticed in ongoing Marathi serials; except ‘Asmita’, which had taken up the issue of senior citizens. Many popular Marathi TV artistes are seen in every new story in this serial. It seems that other serials are still worried about the ongoing IPl T20 cricket matches, telecast of which coincides with prime time.

Prarthana Behere, Actress, Picture

Is Prarthana Behere emerging as the top actress of 2015 ?

Prarthana Behere, Actress, Picture

On her social networking site, she has disclosed her identity as ‘Coffee Aani Prarthana Behere’ so much has been the importance of this role,  to her.  Indeed, ‘Coffee Aani Barach Kahi’ did very good business and it also helped Prarthana Behere to establish herself, among the leading actresses of Marathi film industry.  Just two months ago, Prarthana had won the hearts of Marathi film lovers, with her remarkable  performance in ‘Mitwa’. In fact, ‘Mitwa’ brought her name and fame.

Only two years ago, Avadhoot Gupte had introduced Prarthana through his Marathi film ‘Jai Maharashtra Dhaba Bhatinda’, where Prarthana played a Punjabi girl, falling in love with a Maharashtrian boy  who runs a Dhaba in Bhatinda , serving Maharashtrian food. Last year, there was no film of hers and people thought that she had switched over to Hindi serials. But, with ‘Mitwa’ she brought a new flavor to Marathi films. According to Prarthana, she is not the same, as she was seen in ‘Mitwa’.  But then, how is she in real life? “I am little childish. But, thanks to director Swapna Waghmare, who knew that I would fit into the character of Avani.” she says.

Now, with her superior  performance in the super hit film ‘Coffee Aani Barach Kahi’, Prarthana has proved that she can be reckoned  among the top actresses of Marathi films, today. Luckily for her, the film was made by a big banner and also received support from Ravi Jadhav’s production company. Now, she has  two more films in hand, out of which, adventure filled ‘Biker’s Adda’ opposite Santosh Juvekar will be released soon. Recently, during the music release of this film, Politician Amar Singh and Bollywood actress Jayapradha, were all praise for Prarthana, after watching the first look of this film. Isn’t that a biggest compliment for Pratrthana ?

Last month, her another big banner film ‘Tujhya Vin Mar Javaan’ was launched in a big way. In this film  , Prarthana is playing a Punjabi girl, intensely in love with a Maharashtrian boy, played by Vikas Patil. The film is produced by the family members of late Bollywood film maker Pramod Chakravorty. And, that itself speaks a lot about this film. According to director of this film Murali Nallappa,  “I found Prarthana as a complete actress.  She was so perfect during her audition that we didn’t have a second thought, before making her selection.” And, the first look of this film, shown on the occasion said it all.

If ‘Tujhya Vin Mar Javaan’ gets released this year, Prarthana will have better chances of rising to popularity heights and winning awards for Best actress of 2015. She has already proved her ability through ‘Mitwa’ and ‘Coffee Aani Barach Kahi’, now,  she will be competing with herself  through her forthcoming performances.  Sky is the limit for this beautiful talented actress.

Marathi Serials

Are subjects of Marathi serials appealing Hindi viewers?

Marathi SerialsTill now, we had only heard that the Saas- bahu themes of Hindi TV serials were influencing Marathi serial writers. But now, we are noticing that remakes of Marathi serials are made on Hindi television. There is also news that few Marathi serials will be dubbed in Hindi, thus giving exposure to Marathi artistes on Hindi television. This is certainly a good news for Marathi artistes. At least, they will get noticed at national level and receive good offers from Hindi film producers. Even otherwise, Marathi serials are attracting good viewership, among the regional channels. With the rise in viewership, they are also likely to collect good revenue, through commercial ads.

Based on the story of Zee Marathi’s ‘Honar Suun Mee Hya Gharchi’, Zee TV have introduced their Hindi serial ‘Satarangee Sasural’.  And now, watching the popularity of this serial, it is understood that they are planning to dub their two Marathi serials  ‘Eka Lagnachi Teesari Goshta’ and ‘Julun Yeti Reshimgathi’, which are family dramas. Now, it remains to be seen, how our Marathi artistes will be accepted by Hindi viewers? If it works, it will certainly benefit our Marathi artistes, to reach every household, across the country.

By the way, the news about the separation of Shree and Janhavi in real life, was highlighted on Marathi news channels during the week; with Shashank ketkar filing for divorce, from his wife Tejashree. But, in the serial, we are noticing the possibility of their reunion, with the wicked plans of Janhavi’s step mother, being exposed. Will this prevent their divorce in real life ? Only time will tell. But, there are many cases of settlement, with mutual understanding. Instead of performing separately in different dramas, their admirers would love to watch them together on Marathi stage. Even otherwise, recently they did anchoring together, for an award show ,in spite of the talks about their ‘break up’ taking rounds.

In the coming week, Marathi programmes at  prime time, are likely to face a challenge from IPL T20 matches, which are moving in interesting stage. But when, there hasn’t been much effect of IPL on Marathi films, don’t think that the viewership of Marathi programmes would suffer. It looks like that our Marathi serials  are all prepared to face this challenge.

Timepass 2, Moviestill, Priya Bapat Kamat

‘Time Pass 2′ offers emotion filled entertainment

Director: Ravi Jadhav
Writer: Ravi Jadhav
Screenplay: Kshitij Patwardhan, Priyadarshan jadhav, Ravi Jadhav
Cast: Priyadarshan Jadhav, Priya Bapat, Bhalchandra Kadam, Vaibhav Mangale,  Prathamesh Parab, Ketaki Mategaonkar, Sandeep Pathak, Nayan Jadhav, Sameer Khandekar, Chinmay Kelkar, Aarti Wadagbalkar, Kshiti Jog, Urmila Kanitkar, Bhushan Pradhan, Uday Sabnis, Sampada
Joglekar

In the first part of ‘Time Pass’’ we saw the love story taking place between Dagadu( Prathamesh Parab) and Prajakta ( Ketaki Mategaonkar) during their adolescence . But, due to timely intervention of Prajakta’s father Madhusudan Lele ( Vaibhav Mangale) and useful advice given by Prajakta’s teacher, we noticed a ‘break up’ in their relationship, in the film’s climax.  But, director Ravi Jadhav had clearly hinted that their love story would continue.

Now, in Part 2 of ‘Time Pass’, we notice director Ravi Jadhav setting a stage for their reunion after 12 years. But, this time, you will not see the same actors playing their characters, as the grown up Dagadu is played by actor – director Priyadarshan Jadhav, who had assisted Ravi Jadhav in ‘Time Pass’, while Prajakta is played by Priya Bapat – Kamat.

In the opening scene of this second part , we notice Dagadu turning a politician and social worker of his area, inaugurating an Ambulance service; while Prajakta, far away in Konkan, still dreaming about her reunion with Dagadu. It is only when Dagadu’s inner voice ( In the form of Prathamesh Parab)reminds him about his ‘past love’, Dagadu prepares to go to Konkan, along with his three friends with funny names, in search of Prajakta. He does meet her on his way, but both don’t recognize each other.

Timepass 2, Moviestill, Priya Bapat Kamat

The actual love story between grown up Dagadu and Prajakta takes off, only post interval; as Dagadu first plans to impress Prajakta’s father, posing himself as Navin, a scientist from BARC. He even succeeds to a certain extent. But, Prajakta visits Mumbai, around that time, under the pretext of preparing for her music exams. And, finally, both of them meet in Mumbai, when Prajakta comes to know, his real identity. The film’s screenplay then proceeds further, with some more dramatic happenings, coming in the way of their reunion. Finally, it’s happy end in a predictable climax.

‘Time Pass-2′ has wasted a lot of time in the pre interval stage, before it takes actual grip on the continuation of Dagadu- Prajakta love story. In this second part, the director has paid more attention, giving emotional touch to this love story, besides showing the caring attitude of the protective father. This time, he has also added some action scenes, to show Dagadu a real Super hero. To add some humor, the characters of a photographer from the village, in love with Prajakta and Dagadu’s three friends have been added in a traditional style. But, one fails to understand, why a director of repute Viju Mane, agreed to play a bad man, in a casting couch episode?

‘Time Pass-2′ has good music, but not as superior as Part 1. Even the much talked about item number ‘Pichkari..’, performed by Sonalee Kulkarni, fails to appeal much, as the attention of the audience is more focused on Priya Bapat, who dances as a Junior artiste in that sequence. Barring few such shortfalls, ‘Time Pass-2′ still manages to appeal, because of the fine performances of all the artistes. But, among all of them, Vaibhav Mangle stands tall, with his outstanding performance. Prathamesh Parab , Ketaki Mategaonkar, Bhau Kadam, Bhushan Pradhan , Urmila Kanetkar Kothare and others, are just namesake in this film.  All in all, ‘Time Pass 2′ offers emotion filled entertainment.  But, don’t watch this film, with an intention of comparing it with Part 1.  Don’t forget that it is a pure ‘Time Pass’ film.

khushbu Tawade

“I consider Marathi theatre, as the base of acting” – Khushboo Tawde

khushbu Tawade

We have noticed her talent in Marathi and Hindi serials, since 2011. Last year, she also made her debut in Marathi films, opposite Rajesh Shringarpure. She already has two films in hand; but now she will be seen in Devendra Pem’s play ‘All The Best -2′, which will be launched on 1st May 2015 .

27 year old Khushboo Tawde from Dombivali, is certainly a bright prospect in Marathi entertainment industry, having already won Mata Sanmaan in 2013 and recently, the Dadasaheb Phalke Foundation Puraskar for ‘Best actress on debut’ in Marathi films of 2014.

We have seen Khushboo in the lead, in two Marathi serials ‘Dharmakanya’ and ‘Ek Mohor Abol’; but she has also performed in Hindi television with famous serials like ‘Betaal aur Sinhasan Battisi’ & ‘Tarak Mehta ka Oolta Chashma’, offering variety.

Marathi Movie World spoke to this talented actress. Excerpts from an interview:

Q. Tell us about your background and how you landed in acting?
A. I’m a graduate in hotel management and have done my B.Sc. To be frank, I had never thought about acting. I haven’t even participated in drama competitions, during my college days; but, as we know, it was all my destiny.

Q. Why you were not seen in Marathi Television for long time?
A. From the beginning of my career, I have given preference to variety of roles. I was not interested to do similar type of roles again. I consider Marathi theatre, as the base of acting. I was also waiting to work in a good commercial play. Fortunately, I got an opportunity to do theatre. Now, I’m playing lead role, in Devendra Pem’s commercial Marathi play ‘All the Best 2′; which is a sequel to super duper hit play ‘All the Best’.  And, I’m very excited about it.

Q. Last year, you made your debut on big screen with ‘Love Factor’. What about your other ongoing film projects?
A. Thanks to those filmmakers, who have given me an opportunity. Recently, I completed two Marathi films, ‘Chandri’ which is a different genre horror film and ‘Olakh’ which is based on a social issue. In coming months, theses films will be released back to back. Looking forward to audience reaction, on my performance.

Q. But, how was your experience?
A. It was very good learning experience, while doing rehearsals with Devendra Pem and all team members of ‘All the Best-2′. We had a great time. I think, this play will be surely rock, as the previous one did; and create another record on Marathi stage.

Q. Have you taken any training for acting?
A. No. But my idol is Smita Patil. I’m a die hard fan of her. She was really a gem of Indian cinema. We can’t compare anybody with her. I respect her acting a lot.

Q. What is your comment of current Marathi Cinema?
A. I really feel proud and happy that our Marathi films are getting maximum national awards.

Q. How was your experience working in Hindi?
A. Major difference is that, once you get a break on hindi television, you receive name & fame at national level. That is the major difference.

Aatali Batali Phutali, Sampada Joglekar

Timely and entertaining ‘Aatli Batli Phutli’

Aatali batali futali
Rating: ★★★
Genres: Drama, Childrens Film
Censor: U/A
Duration: 122 Min.
Studio/presenter: Running Reel Productions
Producer: Supriya Chavan
Director: Amol Padave
Writer: Vikram Chavan
Screenplay: Amol Padave
Cast: Sharau Sonavane, Viraj Rane, Aditya Kawale, Anay Patil, Shreyali Vahane, Purva Shah, Jeevan Karalkar, Vibhav Borkar, Samiha Sabnis, Smita Talwalkar, Sampada Jogalikar-Kulkarni, Shekhar, Shekhar Phadke

Very few film makers in Marathi, offer something for the children, especially in the age group of 10 to 12 years. It is the most important age of children, to understand what is good and bad for them, in this world. In last year’s film ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’, we have seen, what this age group children did, to help their close friends. Now, in the latest released Marathi film ‘Aatli Batli Phutli’ produced by Supriya Chavan and directed by Amol Padave, we see a group of six close friends, in the age group of 10-12 years, living in the same housing society. They try to help a girl of their age, from the trouble faced by her, from her selfish aunty and uncle.

The story of this film written by Vikram Chavan revolves around these six children, who go to the same school, travelling together in a school van operated by a filmy buff Dadu( Shekhar Phadke), who is a great admirer of Madhuri Dixit. When these little children come to know about the sad story of Asha , the new girl in their society, who is made to do all the housework, they try to help her, with the help of Dadu and one well wisher aunty living in their society.

Aatali Batali Phutali, Sampada Joglekar‘Aatli Batli Phutli’ has many important sequences, which are emotion filled, as well as filled with humour. Through the character of the school principal (late Smita Talwalkar), the director has tried to present a helpful and kind hearted lady, while through the characters of Dadu and the society watchman, he has tried to create light humour. Through the character of a college going girl, he has shown, how today’s collegians are addicted to continuous talking on mobile phones. Through different parents, we notice the variable attitude of the parents. At the same time, through the character of Shivani karadkar, he has shown, a cruel person.

To extract the best out of the children in this film, the director has found all talented artistes like Sharayu Sonawane, Viraj Rane, Aditya kawale, Poorva Shah, Jivan Karalkar, Anay Patil, Shreyali Vahane; who are well supported by Samhita Sabnis, Vaibhav Borkar, Swapnil Jadhav( ‘Aik’ fame) , Sachin Deshpande, Sampada Joglekar and others.

There are few errors noticed in the film; but looking at the sincere effort of the film maker to offer something for the children, during vacation, they can be overlooked. Cinematographer Aniket K. Has cleverly captured all the close up scenes well, to display the emotions on the faces of the little ones. Music and background music are appealing and go well with the script. In the songs, we notice the voices of Avadhoot Gupte and Swapnil Bandodkar. By the way, Madhuri Dixit hasn’t performed in Marathi films, but her presence is felt in the film, through the photos displayed by the school van operator, in his van. The film is a tribute to Late Smita Talwalkar.Perhaps, her last film, before her sad demise.

All in all, ‘Aatli Batli Phutli’ is an entertaining film with a social message for the little children and their parents. For those, who would want to know the meaning of this phrase (‘Aatli Batli Phutli’, it is- Breaking News!) It is a timely film, released during the vacation time of the children. A must see, for all children.

Marathi MOvie, Multiplex

Multiplex issue still debated on news channels

Marathi MOvie, Multiplex

Ever since Mr. Vinod Tawde, Cultural Minister of Maharashtra, made an announcement to ensure prime time shows in all multiplexes in Maharashtra, the issue is still being debated on different Marathi news channels.  Last week, on TV 9 Marathi news channel,  there was an interesting debate with film maker Dr. Mrinalini Patil taking the lead on behalf of small budget and medium budget film makers. She not only criticized people like Shobha De, who had spoken sarcastically, that Potato Wada would  be sold at Multiplex  soon. Very cleverly, Mrinalini questioned Shobha De, “When Idlis can be sold in South at Multiplexes, why should someone make a comment on Potato wada?”

Others, who took part in this discussion were Mr.  Vidhani, representing Single Screen theatre, Shaina N.C. from BJP and a representative of MNS. Though Shaina N.C. appealed to all Marathi film makers, to approach Mr. Tawde with their complaints; Dr. Mrinalini Patil openly said that she had already formed a Film maker’s forum, to fight injustice on them. “All those small film makers, facing problems, should join this forum, which will fight for their rights, for theatre availability and other issues.” she said.  “I have left my career as a doctor, I have also left politics, since I was seriously interested in making films. Now, I want to fight, for the rights of film makers.” she concluded.

While watching the Marathi film ‘Zapatlelya Betavar’, one really wondered, when was this unknown, suspense filled film, starring Sachin Khedekar , Vijay Chavan and others was released? Perhaps in the early 90s, as Sachin Khedekar looks much younger and slim. One thing was certain that it was inspired by 1965 Bollywood film ‘Gumnaam’ If, it was so, then 2013 multi starrer Marathi film ‘Ashyach Eka Betavar’ was inspired by which film? Was it ‘Gumnaam’ or ‘Zapatlelya Betavar’?

As the IPL cricket is going on, there isn’t anything remarkable  happening in ongoing Marathi TV serials. Like our Marathi films, the Prime Time seems to be bothering our Marathi TV channels too. But, Star Pravah made a clever move, by introducing their new serial ‘Arey Vedya Manaa’ in 7pm slot. Besides the regular serials, even the promotion of forthcoming films on television channels, has also been affected.

Marathi Play, Uney Purey Shahar Ek

‘Uney Purey Shahar Ek’ – Display of good teamwork

Marathi Play, Uney Purey Shahar Ek

Aasakta, Pune is a group of enthusiastic artistes from Pune and their first love has always been theatre. They don’t perform on stage, for monetary benefits . Their biggest satisfaction is group effort and instant audience response. Recently, the group performed  2 shows of  wonderful Marathi play  ‘Uney Purey Shahar Ek’ at Prithvi Theatres, Juhu. Based on Girish karnad’s Kannada Play ‘Benda Kaalu on Toast’ the  Marathi adaptation of it, was done  by Pradeep Vaiddya , while the play was designed & directed by Mohit Takalkar.

The cast of the film comprised of about 35 versatile artistes, some of them already popular stage, television and film stars. Prominent among them were Radhika  Apte, Anita Date, Vibhavari Deshpande, Jyoti Subhash, Ashwini Giri, Sayali Deodhar, Siddharth Menon, Umesh Jagtap ,Sagar Deshmukh and others.

The play shows the contrast in the lifestyle of Rich, the middle class and the lower class.  Very realistically, the script of this play goes on to show the attitude of each character in this play. And, you soon notice, what’s in the mind of each character, with the progress of this play. It is actually a performance oriented play, with superb performances coming from all the artistes. You can call it, an excellent team work. Credit also goes to all those back stage artistes, who quickly arranged  the sets for every new scene, to make it more impressive.

It is surprising that such plays are not staged at popular Marathi drama theatres in Mumbai and Pune.  If they are staged at these places, they will certainly  receive good response. Hope to see this team back again on stage. Don’t miss it. It’s sensible, yet hilarious!
