Emotion filled ‘Tya Tighanchi Goshta’ touches your heart

Sharad Ponkshe, Ashwini Ekbote, marathi natak

Kumar Sohoni has always dealt with different subjects on human relations. Through all his 51 plays directed so far, he has offered ample talents to Marathi theatre. This time, through his play ‘Tya Tighanchi Goshta’ , he has explored the relationship between a separated couple Dinanath and Suman Daftardar ( Sharad Ponkshe & Ashwini Ekbote) . How it has the effect on their grown up 19 year old daughter Deepti ( Dnyanada Panase) is shown very cleverly by the director. The play is written by well known psychiatrist and writer Dr.Anand Nadkarni, which makes it more interesting subject, as he has very skillfully presented the emotional sides of each one of these three important characters.

Produced by Ashok Narkar and Sharad Bagwe, the play begins with the close bonding shown between mother (who is a college professor) and her daughter, who is studying in the final year, at the same college. The father, an IAS officer, who has separated from his wife and daughter, 15 years ago, is now Municipal Commissioner of the same city, where Mother and daughter are residing. Though Mother and daughter are not connected with Mr. Dinanath Daftardar, they are in touch with his close associates Nana his personal secretary and Mangesh, his old classmate and Journalist friend.

One fine day, Nana visits Ms. Daftardar to invite her for the felicitation function of her husband, who is to be honoured by the chief Minister of state. This is followed by a personal phone call and personal visit of Dinanath Daftardar to meet his wife and grown up daughter. Having heard about her father, through her mother, Deepti is initially reluctant to meet her father; but, later decides to face him, to know the reason from him, for deserting his wife and her. But, it is the mother, being very possessive about her daughter, becomes more worried, thinking that her grown up daughter would change her opinion about her father, after meeting him.

At this stage, the writer and the director are clearly noticed, with their competence to take forward this delicate emotion filled subject, with interesting happenings . In the climax scene, Deepti converses with the audience, seeking their opinion, on what she did, was ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. ‘Tya Tighanchi Goshta’ presents the most relevant subject timely, to convey a strong message to the society. And, it has succeeded in creating a strong impact on all age groups. The story presented through this play, does not take side of any one of the characters, but very cleverly presents their attitude, with passage of time.

Both Sharad Ponkshe and Ashwini Ekbote, have portrayed their characters with complete understanding of the situation, at every stage in this play. They have proved that they are versatile artistes. They find good support from the character artistes Jayant Ghate and Vivek Joshi. But, the girl who steals the show, is young Dnyanada Panase. She seems to be a perfect choice of the director. And, she has proved his selection right. In fact, she has given a brilliant performance in the role of Deepti. Watch her reaction and body language, in every important scene, be it with mother or father; which goes on to say a lot about her gifted talent. She is so flawless. Good background music and suitable light and set designing, are the other plus points of this play. Certainly a worth watch, for the entire family.

Gudi Padwa, Star Pravah

Star Pravah is banking on ‘Chaitra Chahool’

Come ‘Gudi Padwa’ and Marathi entertainment channels get ready to offer something new to the home viewers. In this race, Star Pravah is getting ready to offer variety, through their entertaining programme, suitably titled ‘Chaitra Chahool’ . At least, the promos of this programme indicate that it is going to offer good entertainment. So, all eyes on 21st March at 6.30 pm on Star Pravah channel.

Gudi Padwa, Star PravahThe first look of this programme, shown in trailer, gives an impression that they have honoured some well known personalities like Bharat Dabholkar, Neena Kulkarni and Ravi Jadhav with much deserved ‘Pravah Ratna’ awards. Even otherwise, Star Pravah is gearing up to face the competition, with the arrival of ETV’s new Colourful look; with the introduction of two new serials ‘Priti Pari Tujavari’ and ‘Tu Jivala Guntavave’. But, that’s not enough. Though their two serials ‘Lakshay’ and ‘Jayostute’ are doing well, they have to think something big, instead of continuing with the outdated subjects.

Talking about the competition, Zee Marathi has already made a good beginning, in March, with their Brand new serial ‘Dil Dosti Duniyadari’ targeting the young generation and selecting the best suited time for them to telecast this serial, i.e. 10.30 pm. This serial, produced by Filmmaker Sanjay Jadhav and directed by Vinod Lavekar, has Amey Wagh , as the only known face . While there are two star daughters namely Swanandi Tikekar and Sakhi Gokhale , daughters of Uday ( Babaji fame ) Tikekar & Aarti Anklikar Tikekar and Shubhangi Gokhale respectively.

ETV, which is soon changing to Colors, have started new serial ‘Majhiya Mahera’ in February . Even this serial is yet to pick up popularity; but, the new actress Nakshatra Medhekar, looks pretty and shows promise. By the way, Rajan Bhise, who plays Suruchi Adarkar’s father in ‘Ka Re Durava’ is seen as Nakshtra’s father in this serial. Does that mean, that he is taking a break from ‘Ka Re Durava’, finally approving Suyash Tilak’s business proposal , after humiliating him to give credit to his daughter. Hope, this new serial’s story turns interesting in near future.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Every filmmaker feels that whatever he offers is something remarkable. And, there is nothing wrong in expecting success in return. But today, Marathi films are showing a change, with new subjects dealt in films. Therefore, if the script of the film is outdated and is not able to convince the audience; then the result is known to all. Latest released Marathi film Bugadi Majhi Sandali Ga goes with the formula, adopted in films of 60s and 70s.

Manasi Moghe, Bugadi Mazi Sandli ga

Producer Shyam Singhania and director Mansingh Pawar signed Miss India Universe Beauty queen Manasi Moghe, to play the lead role of a beautiful dancing actress and focused their attention on ‘Lavani’ the traditional dance form of Maharashtra, as the base of the film. In order to make it more musical, they engaged three different music directors. But, as they say, ‘Too many cooks spoil the broth ‘. Barring two songs, the other seven songs in this film, have failed to appeal. And, that turned out to be the biggest drawback of the film. Even the screenplay of this film, with limited content, failed to generate much interest, due to predictable happenings, except for the climax. But, that too had left a hint, in the initial scene of the film. So, don’t miss the beginning.

The story of this film revolves around Shubhangi (Manasi Moghe) who is an orphan, and brought up by a Tamasha dancer Chandraprabha Sanglikar( Deepa Chafekar). Chandraprabha who is in live-in-relationship with Raosaheb, since her younger days, lives in Raosaheb Shinde’s big house, 40 kms away from Kolhapur city. Indrajeet, the only son of Appasaheb Mohite and Padmaja Mohite(Ramesh Bhatkar & Ila Bhate) who are rich and run a trust in Kolhapur. He returns from abroad, after studying music and wants to know more about ‘Lavani’ the traditional Indian dance-music form. That’s how he comes across Shubhangi and falls in love with her. She too gives her heart to Indrajeet.

The trouble begins, when Appasaheb comes to know about their relationship. In the meanwhile, Raosaheb also returns after six years. Watching Shubhangi’s beauty, Raosaheb also make his advances towards her, but Chandraprabha warns him. Everything goes on, as predicted, except for the tragic end. Actually, the film fails to capture the attention of the audience in pre interval stage. In every intense love story, there is strong opposition from other characters. That does not happen in this film. The only negative character is seen playing his cruel act towards the end of the film. Even the opposition from Indrajeet’s parents and Chadraprabha is not very convincing.

There are many such incidences in the film, which fail to convince. As far as the performances are concerned, Manasi Moghe makes a sincere attempt on her debut. She looks beautiful in every scene. But, the director and the choreographer should have paid more attention on her body language & visual expressions in close up. Even, not much attention has been paid on her accent, which should have been in typical Kolhapuri style. Kashyap Parulekar has done well, in the role of Indrajeet. But, his real potential hasn’t been exploited by the director, except for the last scene.

A lot of importance has been given to the character of Chandraprabha, so much so that she is also given scope to perform a baithak Lavani, with a full song picturised on her. Ila Bhate finds her share to prove her acting skills, in two important scenes in the post interval session. In comparison Ramesh Bhatkar is just namesake father in the film, with not much scope for an actor of his caliber. Mohan Joshi plays the negative character in his own style, in the concluding part of the film. ‘Lakshya’ serial fame Jagannath Nivangune, has also been wasted in this film. Other character artistes offer the required support. Good cinematography by Raja Fadtare is the plus point of this film. He has picturised one outdoor song very well.

Bugadi Majhi Sandali Gamay not appeal the Mumbai audience much; but might invite some response from places like Kolhapur, Nagpur and other small cities in Western Maharashtra, provided it has found theatres at such places.

E-TV to turn ‘Colors Marathi’ soon

etv colors, marathi, channelThe big news on Marathi Small Screen entertainment is that Viacom 18, which is a big media company in entertainment field, will be taking over ETV under their new banner Colors -Marathi. As a result of this, from the coming Gudhi Padwa day, we will find Marathi entertainment turning more colourful. On the very next day of their launch, Colors-Marathi will present a big awards event, which was sponsored by them outside India.

On the other side, Zee Marathi channel is all set to present their new serial ‘Dil Dosti Duniyadari’, which is targeted at young audience. This new serial is about six friends Kaivalya, ashutosh, Sujay, Aana ,Minal & Reshma. The serial is produced by popular cinematographer-director Sanjay Jadhav’s ‘Dreaming Twenty  Four Seven’ company and is all set to air on 9th March at a new time 10.30 pm. Vinod Lavekar is the director of this serial.

By the way, if Zee Marathi has to compete with new programmes expected to be offered by Colors-Marathi, it has to seriously think about  new subjects during prime time. It is high time to say goodbye to serials like ‘Honar Sunn Mi Hya Gharchi’ and ‘Julun Yeti Reshimgathi’ as both these serials have failed to appeal during the past few weeks.

On the eve of International Women’s day, DD-Sahyadri presented a very good informative programme ‘Hello Sakhi’, in which we saw Meghana Erande sharing her valuable experience in the field of Voice over and dubbing. Meghana appealed to all newcomers to train themselves in this field, as career wise it was a good option.  According to her, for all those aspiring actors, knowledge of Voice Over and dubbing, is a must.

On TV 9 Marathi, we saw actress Kranti Redkar expressing  her frank views on women’s rights. “I am myself fighting for my rights against a media company, filing defamation case against them. Every month I go and attend the hearing, because I feel that no one should take a woman for granted,” she said. When asked for a message to other women, she said, “Every woman has to strike a balance. On the contrary, If she is too much submissive, she cannot do justice to herself.”

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Falling in love during an adolescence stage, is nothing unusual. But, one should decide the limits and attain maturity quickly, to know what is good and bad in this world. To an adolescent, there is nothing as embarrassing, than to face his or her parents, after the secret love is noticed. Till now, so many films have been made on love during teenage, especially during schooldays.

Katt Bbatti, Moviestill

About seven years ago ffilmmakerMilind Ukey made a Hindi film ‘Humne Jeena Sikh Liya’ with Siddharth Chandekar and Mrunmayee Deshpande , on the same subject. Then we saw Sujay Dahake’s ‘Shala’ giving slightly a different look to the subject and last year, we saw Ravi Jadhav’s ‘Time Pass’ handling the same subject, in an entertaining way. Now, we see producer Yuvraj Pawar and director Rajendra Pawar handling the same subject through their film ‘Katti Batti’, cautioning the teenagers and their parents; about the care to be taken in such cases.

The story of this film is set on the backdrop of a village somewhere off Kolhapur region. Paresh ( Pritam Bhujbalrao)who is studying in 9thstandard in a village school, is in love with his classmate Janhavi ( Prajakta Ydav). Encouraged by his close friend Lalya( Ketan Pawar) Paresh dares to express his love to Janhavi. Not taking him seriously at initial stage, Janhavi then all of a sudden reciprocates. And, then both start dating, only to be noticed by a drunkard Babnya( Arun Nalawade). The news spreads across the village and the trouble begins for Paresh and Janhavi.  Paresh’s mother( Sanjivani Jadhav ) is very annoyed; but Janhavi’s father takes a different approach. Being a headmaster of the school, he finds a solution to the problem in his own way. The film does conclude with a message, delivered by Babnya, an irritating, but important character of the film.

‘Katti Batti’ has nothing new to offer , except for the message. The film lacks skilful presentation. However, the director has worked hard to convey his thoughts, through some emotion filled scenes in the film. Watch the reaction of Paresh’s mother, after knowing her son’s love affair and at the same time the approach of Janhavi’s educated father. There is lot to convey through these scenes. Similarly, the stand taken by Paresh’s friend Lalya on two occasions, is also well presented. There is no doubt about the sincere efforts put in by the two debutants Pritam and Prajakta, to express their emotions; but Pritam hasn’t maintained the continuity through his dialogue delivery. It differs on many occasions. In comparison, ketan Pawar steals the show, though in the post interval session, he has very limited scope.

Among the the supporting artistes Dr.Vilas Ujavane, Arun Nalawade and Jairaj Nair have proved their versatility, through their important characters. Sanjivani Jadhav is a waste in this film. Except for feeding her son and shouting at him, she has nothing much to do. Film has limited scope for music, which is also not very impressive. Photography and background music is good. The film has therefore turned out to be an average entertainer .

Actress, Smita Gondkar

“I am waiting to play non glamorized roles- Smita Gondkar

She can be termed as one of the glamorous heroines of Marathi movie industry. Smita Gondkar, is probably the fittest heroines in recent times. She had been around for a while, but one music video did wonders and brought her into limelight.

“I am thrilled with the response ‘Pappi de Paru la’ music video received. It brought me closer to the audience.”  Smita was reminiscing and continued, “I was working in USA with Disney Cruise Line alongside people from 55 nations. On one of my yearly India visits, I decided to travel and explore India with backpack and hitch-hiking. In the meantime, I did some modelling and was offered a marathi film, which was supposed to be completed in 3 months. But, the film got delayed and I was offered few other films, which extended my stay here. And since my acting hobby turned into passion, I said Good bye to USA.”

Actress, Smita Gondkar

Smita debuted through ‘Mumbaicha Dabewala’ with Bharat Jadhav and later did a film with Ajinkya Deo, titled ‘Vasudev Balwant Phadke’. She was lucky enough to have started her film career with two big names in Marathi.

She has acted in films like ‘Vijay Dinanath Chouhan’, ‘Hip Hip Hurray’, ‘Ashi Fasli Nanachi Taang’,  ‘Premacha Jholjhal’, to name a few. “It’s a coincidence that most of my films have been comedies. I do like doing comedy roles, but I sincerely crave for other roles too . Recently, I refused a couple of films, because of the very reason” confessed Smita.
Smita Gondkar idolises exceptionally talented actress, late Smita Patil. “I am, at present, doing a very interesting role in a film on a social issue of family planning. And interestingly enough, I am doing an item song in ‘Wanted Baiko No.1’, despite playing the lead role”. She said.

Being glamorous all her career, costumes do play pivotal part. Smita admits and says “I am very particular about what I wear on screen and to be on the safer side, as a standby, I always carry a few of my personal costumes, according to the scheduled scenes. I do not want to stall the shoot, just for the sake of clothes’. “And most of the time I end up wearing my own stuff”she added with a smile.

Speaking about her slim figure, she said, “Neither I exercise, nor do I follow any diet plan. I belong to a ‘sporty’ family. I used to train very hard, during my school and college days, for 8 to 10 hours daily as I was into swimming, Kayaking & judo in a big way. And thankfully, it’s helping me now.” Incidentally Smita has represented State in Kayaking (she was the captain of the team), Swimming and Judo. She is also an avid biker and indulges in ‘style and adventure biking’ and adventure sports like sky-diving, in her spare time. As per Smita, ‘These activities satisfy my soul.’

Smita Gondkar can be seen in forthcoming movies, ‘Gappa Bais Ani Aiik’, ‘Janavhi’, ‘Full To Dhamaal’,  ‘Wanted Baiko No.1′,  ‘Ek Aadat’ (Hindi), ‘Just Gammat’, to mention a few. “My films ‘Gadbad Gondhal’ with Santosh Juvekar and ‘Chi. Sau. Ka. Mary Fernandes’ with Bharat Jadhav are ready and I am waiting for the promotions to start” Smita informed.

This glamorous actress, has also done Hindi and English movies (The Awakening) but enjoys doing marathi movies and is eagerly waiting for her dream to play ‘non-glamorised’ role.

Madhura Deshpande

“Playing Gayatri, is a dream role for me” – Madhura Deshpande

With the help of her sharp looks and charming smile, she bagged the role of Gayatri, in Zee Marathi’s new serial ‘Ase Hey kanyadaan’. Madhura Deshpande is from Pune and is well versed with Classical Dance, especially Bharat Natyam. The character of Gayatri in this serial, needed a dancing actress, as there is plenty of scope for dance, in this serial, besides acting.

Madhura DeshpandeMadhura is playing the daughter of versatile actor Sharad Ponkse, a disciplinarian Municipal officer. Gayatri  also has a younger brother and mother in this serial . But, the story of this serial shows the finest  relationship between father and daughter. Father begins his day, with a cup of coffee served by his beloved daughter. In short, there is solid bonding between two of them, as both of them take good care of each other.

Met Madhura recently, at a function and found her to be very modest, while talking about her college days in Pune. Madhura has studied from Garware College, Pune and did her specialization in Bharat Natyam at Padmashree Sucheta Bhide Chaphekar’s ‘Kalavardhini’. She began learning about stage and Drama at Maharashtra Cultural Centre.  Madhura has performed in Purushottam shield, representing college. In short, she has developed herself in the field of acting, with right training.

Talking about her first big assignment through Zee Marathi’s serial ‘Ase Hey kanyadaan’, that too in lead role, she said, “Playing Gayatri is a dream role for me. I am glad that in my first big assignment, I had an opportunity to work with multitalented actor like Mr. Sharad Ponkshe. There is lot to learn from him. He is not only a good actor; but, a wonderful person too. I enjoy every moment, while working on the sets of this film.”

But, was she nervous, facing her first scene opposite Mr. Ponkshe ? And, Madhura said, “I am basically a stage actress and therefore was well prepared with my character. In fact, I took it as a challenge. And, it worked.”

When asked, whether She would also opt for Marathi films? She politely said, “It is too early for me to think about it. Let me first establish myself as a good TV actress.” By the way, Madhura is becoming popular among young TV audience, as the serial offers the subject targeted at youngsters. The serial also offers a social message, which is more important. And, above all, talented Madhura is playing the young matured collegian, who knows, how to judge people.

Presenting a period story and that too on ‘Hyderabad freedom movement’ is not a bad idea. This historical event had taken place after country’s independence. Not many people today, are aware of this movement and the atrocities of Razzakars’ in Hyderabad region, which was then under the rule of 7th Nizam Mir Usman Ali. Latest released film ‘Razzakar’ takes you to this post independence era of 1947 and 1948, when the Nizam of Hyderabad, refused to be part of Indian states, after India’s independence. He had instead supported the terrorist group of Razzakars’ to form their own army, opposing Hyderbad’s merger into an Indian state.

Razzakar

Set on the backdrop of a small village Khandgaon, in Marathwada region, this new Marathi film ‘Razzakar’ has been presented by producer Satish Pilangwad & director Raj Durge. The film shows, how a youngster Hari ( Siddharth Jadhav) from this village, dared to fight the cruel commander of Razzakar army- Dilawar Khan ( Zakir Hussain) and his people, with the blessings of his mother ( Jyoti Subhash). The screenplay of the film begins with exodus of villagers, with the fear of Razzakars’ attacking their village. But, for next 50 minutes, we only notice the gimmicks of Hari followed by the arrival of a family in the village. Comprising of five people headed by Sadashivrao ( Dr.Sharad Bhutadia), a Gandhian, they try to unite the villagers, to oppose Razakars .

It is only little before the stroke of interval, we actually see the arrival villain Dilawar Khan on the screen, with his cruel methods of killing poor villagers. When, Dilawar and his small army arrive in Hari’s village, Sadashivrao is away to welcome a freedom fighter. So, we notice a dozen of people including village landlord Deshmukh , his son Bali ( Gautam Patil) and Hari taking on the mighty Dilawar. Initially they surrender, with all their gold belongings. But, when Dilawar and his men kill few villagers including Hari’s mother, we notice a brave Hari daring to fight Dilawar and his two men, by first snatching his hen, held by him always in his arms. Finally, we see the Indian army coming to the rescue of Hari, in the concluding scene.

‘Razzakar’ is a sincere attempt by director Raj Durge; but, he has failed to create the required impact of the freedom movement. Instead, he has shown the villagers, most of the time living under fear. The three old men from the village shown gossiping on few occasions, is the best example. The character of Sadashivrao, who is supposed to be a fearless freedom fighter in the initial stages, is seen running away from the scene, after the actual arrival of Razakars in the village.

One fails to understand, why so much of importance was being given to secret love affair between Deshmukh’s son Bali and Sadashivarao’s daughter Iravati( Piyusha Kolte). In most of the scenes, Iravati walks, as if she is walking on the ramp in fashionable white Saree and make up. There is one particular scene, where Deshmukh the landlord collects the Gold ornaments from all the villagers, including those from his wife, but, is seen wearing a thick chain around his neck in the next scene.

However, barring these few errors, the director has tried to present a period story, taking lot of efforts on selection of location and especially presenting the three main characters of Hari, his mother and Dilawar khan. He seemed to have given full freedom to the lead actor Siddharth to go his own way, on many occasions. But, Siddharth has given full justice, to his selection for this role. Jyoti Subhash does well, to express her emotions well. Zakir Hussain is impressive as cruel villain. But, he has nothing different to offer in Marathi , as all his dialogues are in Hindi, in the entire film. It is doubtful, whether such a character can connect with Marathi audience? Actually, the name of the film should have been something different.

Fine photography by Aniket Khandagale, good art work by Narendra Bhagat, suitable background music by Salil Amrute and perfect sound design by Manoj Mochemadkar & Sandeep Madkholkar are the plus points of this film. Not very impressive; but, a must watch film for all Siddharth fans.

Presenting good music with a tragic love story, has always been the tradition of Bollywood films since 70s and 80s. So, don’t be surprised, if someone is inspired by them, while making a Marathi film today. New Marathi film ‘Mitwaa’directed by Swapna Waghmare-Joshi, also goes on the lines of few bollywood films of 80s and 90s. But, barring this, the film counts on good music, excellent performances and superior technical support.

The story of ‘Mitwaa’ is set on the backdrop of Goa and revolves around three main characters , Shivam ( Swwapanil Joshi), Awnee (Prarthana Behere) and Nandini (Sonalee Kulkarni). So, in the beginning of the film, we notice Shivam nearing 40, trying to convince his little daughter, for arriving home late. A successful businessman, he has had a past, full of fun, romancing with different girls. But, as we see him meeting his good old friend Awnee, who manages his business affairs, he narrates her his intense love story with Nandini (Sonalee Kulkarni) .

Mitwaa Moviestill, Prarthana Behere, Sonalee Kulkarni

As we are taken into flashback, we notice a flamboyant lifestyle of Shivam, the young businessman and owner of a big resort. Awnee being his close friend, manages his business, besides looking after all his needs, like a good friend. She also loves Shivam through her heart; but unlike typical girlfriends, is never jealous of Shivam’s affairs with other girls. Nandini, who walks into Shivam’s company, she is the first girl, who does not give much importance to Shivam, besides doing her job with sincerity. Shivam , who falls in love with Nandini at first sight, finally expresses his love to Nandini in a style. But, Nandini who has her own mystery filled past, refuses to marry Shivam. After this event, we notice many dramatic developments in the film’s story.

‘Mitwa’ is not the kind of film, with predictable end. It has a substance, which director Swapna Waghmare-Joshi has used well, to make it more emotion filled; but in the process, she has made it little complicated. The character played by Nandini is no doubt a mysterious character, as per the requirement of story; but on few occasions, she is shown in double mind. An intense love scene between Shivam and Nandini in the lobby of the resort, says it all. Actually, Shivam kisses Nandini in a prolonged scene, in presence of other people waiting and watching in the corridor and Awnee, who is witness to this scene, asking the people to mind their own business. But then, why does Nandini try to keep Shivam away? And, this secret is revealed later.

There are few other lapses in this film. The Goan lady’s character played by Aruna Irani, neither speaks Konkani nor Marathi well. Also, don’t exactly know, the reason for using the premises of an Eye Care Hospital in the film, when we see a patient in Coma. Was it only, because they were co sponsors of this film? Another co sponsor, 9x Jhakas have also used their slide, flashing frequently, during one song cum dance sequence in the film. By the way, the director has made good use of all the other finalists from the Lux 9x Jhakaas talent contest, through small character roles in the film’s pre interval stage. It may be recalled that Prarthana’s selection was made through this talent contest.
Swwapnil Joshi is the real star in this film. He captures all the attention, with his flamboyant as well as emotion filled image. He has also done well, in some intense romantic scenes. Sonalee Kulkarni, does well to present a confused, yet duty bound woman very well. Her character itself is mysterious, in the film, which has generated some interest in the screenplay. Prarthana Behere gives a big surprise, with her confident looking portrayal of Awnee, a matured and composed woman. She looks very glamorous, in this film. She will surely have more fan flowing, after this film. There is less scope for the character of Ashwin Desai played by Sangram Samel in this film. But, without his presence, the film’s story is not complete. Good support comes from Ila Bhate and others.

The film has support of good music. Two songs in this film have been picturised very well. They remain on your lips, even after leaving the cinema hall. The picturesque locations of Goa and wonderful cinematography by Prasad Bhende, add beauty to the film. In fact, the film has a lot of resemblance to 1983 Bollywood film ‘Agar Tum Na Hote’. Similarity is also observed in one of the female characters, who is also brought up in an orphanage.

‘Mitwaa’ produced by Meenakshi Sagar, Amrit Sagar, Akash Chopra and presented by Nanubhai Jaisinghani, is likely to catch up female audience, besides targeting youngsters. Loving couples shouldn’t miss it, on the occasion of Valentines’ Day.

“I sacrificed my acting career, for writing songs” – Guru Thakur

guru-thakur-pictureHe started his career as a newspaper columnist. He also is termed as a cartoonist, caricaturist, voice-over artist, script writer but he rose to enormous fame with his song writing skills as a lyricist. He is Guru Thakur. This multi faceted personality was a writer, for the popular television serial Shriyut Gangadhar Tipre. He has also scripted a popular marathi drama Bhaiyya Haat Paay Pasari. Marathi film Natrang became a sort of landmark film in the industry gaining loads of popularity. with Ajay-Atul’s music, Guru Thakur’s lyrics set a new trend, as he was also responsible for the movie’s screenplay too. One of the few personalities who have tasted success in entire marathi entertainment medium and winner of more than a dozen of awards, was talking exclusively to MarathiMovieWorld.

MMW: You are undoubtedly one of the leading lyricists of marathi films. Where do you think, the song writing is heading ?
GT : It feels good, when your work is appreciated and that induces you to work harder. Sadly enough, the senior writers have stopped writing, which makes this job still more difficult.

MMW: But a lot of new writers are thronging the field. Who do you think is good in the new lot ?
GT: It’s a mixed reaction. Quite a few new lyricists are good. They have done a good job and are appreciated. But I think, majority of them lack consistency. After initial spark, they seem to fizzle out. May be, they succumb to catering to the demand of young generation, who presumably are not inclined towards pure, unadulterated marathi. One should not bog down to the temptations. There should be more effort to sustain quality. And importantly, anything written with passion is invariably appreciated by even young generation.

MMW: Are you averse to non-marathi singers ?
GT : No. I have no issues and all of them have proved their talent. In fact, in my upcoming movie Shalee, there’s only one song and that too is sung by Roop Kumar Rathod.

MMW: But don’t they have problems with pronunciations? Because late Kishore Kumar used to be scared of pronouncing certain marathi words .
GT: Well, sometimes it’s difficult for them.

MMW: In that case, do you attend all recordings ?
GT: Earlier I was not very particular about attending recordings, but couple of incidents of non-suitable words, used at the last moment due to time pressure, made me realise that if I am around, and if required, alternate word can be provided by me, on the spot.

MMW: What do you prefer, writing before hand or writing on a tune?
GT: When you are just writing, then there are no boundaries. I can write as per the requirement of the script. And while writing on a tune, you have to fit in the words, as per the ‘meter’. But, I relish both.

MMW: You have done more than 50 films. Any favourite music director?
GT: I have worked with almost every music director and all of them are good and am happy with everybody.

MMW: Your next projects….
GT: About 10-12 films. Upcoming EkTara has thrown a challenge to me. It’s a musical and has 11 songs out of which I have written 9.

MMW: That’s great. Your personality must be giving complex to quite a few heroes in the industry. And we have has seen you on screen too. Any chances of changing the profession?
GT: Actually I am an actor and have done a few assignments. I used to like writing too. The producers, directors imbibed on me that since there is dearth of good writers, I should concentrate on writing, because according to them I was good at it. They say, there are plenty of actors available for a single project, but same can’t be said about Writers. So,I sacrificed my acting career, for writing songs.
