“I am a director’s actor” – Ajinkya Deo
He has been in the acting field for almost three decades now. But he has maintained himself very well. Having been blessed with a good height and fine personality, he still invites all your attention, while on screen. Ajinkya Deo is still going strong and has been receiving good offers, well suited to him. Recently, we saw him in out of the box Marathi film ‘Shashi Deodhar’ , while he also appeared in Anil Kapoor’s popular action TV serial ’24’.
Whatever characters Ajinkya has played so far, were with total conviction. At present, his new film ‘Bhatukli’ is all set to release on 13th June and Ajinkya is playing the central lead character of a successful businessman, who feels detached from his family members, comprising of three children and wife. This film is produced by Sagar Ballary (director of Bollywood film ‘Bheja Fry’ ) and directed by his assistant Rohit Joshi, who has also written the story of this film.
It was a pleasure talking to this talented actor, who spoke about his present assignments and his commitment to this filed. Excerpts from an interview.
Q: Just saw the first look of your forthcoming Marathi film ‘Bhatukli’ and you have a very good role. Can we say, it’s a comeback film for you?
A: I would not say that this is a comeback film, as I have recently done a film ‘Shashi Deodhar’ and four more films of mine, will also be released by end of this year. But, surely, I would call it a big role in this film, to test my ability, as an actor.
Q: You always say that you are a director’s actor. Can you elaborate on it?
A: Yes, I still hold that statement. As an actor, I always believed to prepare myself with the dialogues from the script given to me. And, when I go to the sets, I leave myself to the director and do as he wants me to react to every situation. This has helped me to perform differently, every time. It has also helped me to learn new things, playing different characters.
Q: That is indicative, with your performance playing different characters in films like ‘Ringa Ringa’, ‘Jetaa’, ‘Dubhang’ and ‘Shashi Deodhar’. Isn’t it ?
A: Yes, you are right. And, you would have noticed the director through these characters played by me, besides my own performance.
Q: Why did your films like ‘Jeta’ and ‘Shashi Deodhar’ didn’t do well, in spite of their good scripts?
A: It is very difficult to find audience in large number, immediately after the film’s release, unless the film is marketed well by big production or distribution companies.
Q: What are the other projects, you are associated with ?
A: I am doing ‘Natee’ with Tejaa Deokar, which revolves around the life of an actress. I am playing the character of a director in this film, which has grey shade. The film is directed by Yogesh Pawar. There is ‘Raakhandar’ a big period film, where I am playing Khandoba. I am glad that I am playing this role. Then, there is ‘Salt, Pepper Aani Prem’ directed by Rahul Jadhav, which is a different film. One more film I am doing, is also totally different for Marathi viewers, almost on the style of ‘Delhi Belly’. So, they are all different and challenging roles for me. All these films are likely to be released by end of this year.
Q: Now, looking at the character of Shrikant Deshmukh you play in ‘Bhatukli’ , which has some relevance to everybody’s life in today’s materialistic world. But, still, the emotional bond is very strong among Maharashtrian families. How do you describe the love and affection of your own parents showered upon you, even after you have yourself turned a responsible father.
A: Sometimes, that emotional attachment is more than required. But, that’s our way of living. All the parents are always concerned about their children. Even after being liberal with my own children, sometimes, even I behave like that and show more concern towards them. Luckily, my son is more understanding; and knows what is good and bad for him. He is just back from Canada and now with us. I also have a daughter and I love them all.
“I gained a lot from Sharayu’s character”- Leena Bhagwat
The one of popular TV serial ‘Honar Sunn Mee Hya Gharchi’ had suddenly shifted in the last few weeks on the shoulders of Sharayu, the character played by Leena Bhagwat. Incidentally, Leena plays so called Chhoti Aai of Shree, (the lead hero of this serial). Not all with such character roles are able to create an impact on the audience through their performance. But, Leena has been lucky to find such a role, which has not only popularised among the audience, but it has also been able to gain sympathy in the recent past. Initially, Leena through Sarayu’s character generated a lot of humour, through this serial, with her forgetful nature; but later succeeded in displaying her emotions well; to invite all the attention to her own story.
Last year, we saw her playing a humour filled family member of Ghana in ‘Eka Lagnachi Doosari Goshta’ and before that her powerful character of Shalini as a tenant in Agnihotri’s house, had received lot of appreciation. But, Leena is not new to the filed of acting. She had started performing in experimental theatre, way back in 1991, while she was still in college. Through Experimental plays like ‘Hach Khel Udya Pudhe’, she soon got into professional play ‘Moru Chi Maushi’ and also performed with Pradeep Patwardhan, in one of the popular programmes of Sahyadri channel- ‘Awaad Aaapli Aapli’. Leena came into reckoning, through these performances and was offered a role by Amol Palekar in his film ‘Kairee’, which turned out to be debut film for Leena. Later, Leena did perform in films like ‘Doh’, ‘Dhudgus’, ‘Pach Naar Ek Bejaar'; but as a TV actress, she has gained more popularity till date.
Having started her acting career through stage, Leena still finds time for stage and is at present performing in Malvani comedy ‘Pandgo Ilo Re Ba Ilo’. She is also considering a proposal from a new Marathi play. In the meanwhile, Leena has recently won an award from Zee Gaurav, for her performance in the film ‘Avatarachi Goshta’, which is yet to release. In this film, Leena plays the mother of a small child, around whom the story of this film revolves. MarathiMovieWorld spoke to Leena Bhagwat, to know more about her profession and she was kind enough to discuss about herself. Excerpts from an interview:
Q: You came into the field of acting by chance or you really struggled to find suitable roles ?
A: I was interested in acting since my college days. Initially, I started through experimental plays. I still remember the days, when I used to ask for concessions during my rehearsals, to adjust my college schedule. But, I managed it well. I wouldn’t call it struggle; but it was hard work and sincerity in this acting profession. Not all are lucky to find the roles of their choice. But, I consider myself lucky, as I found all those roles, which were to my satisfaction.
Q: Two years ago, you performed in popular TV serial ‘Agnihotra’, which is now being shown in repeat run during afternoon time. Tell us something about the character of Shalini, played by you.
A: When Mr. Ranga Godbole explained to me about my role, he made it very clear that my character did not belong to Agnihotri family. But, he said that it was an important character. I trusted him and as the shooting progressed, I realised the importance of Shalini in the script. Both Abhay Paranjape as a writer and Mr. Godbole as a director had shaped it so well, that I had the privilege of interacting with most of the important characters in this serial.
Q: Now, when you are playing the character of Sharayu in ‘Honar Sunn Mee Hya Gharchi’, what difference you notice in the characters of Shalini and Sharayu ?
A: Shalini in ‘Agnihotra’ did not belong to the family; yet, she was a responsible person in the script. When Mandar Deosthali explained to me about the role of Sharayu in ‘Honar Sunn Mee Hya Gharchi’, I knew that I had to present not only a humour filled absent minded character, but also display my emotions, at a later stage. As Leena Bhagwat, I would say, as an actress “I gained a lot from Sharayu’s character”. It is such a wonderful role.
Q: Are you happy with your television image?
A: I feel that whatever roles have come to me on television, they have given me a lot of satisfaction. But, I am also doing films and stage. Recently, I was awarded Zee Gaurav Puraskar for my performance in the film ‘Avatarachi Goshta’, which is yet to release. I am also doing a play ‘Pandgo Ilo Re Ba Ilo’. So, I am busy with all three mediums of acting. It’s not only television please.

On few occasions, I have also taken my children on the sets; when there was no other alternative. And, it all went on well. Responsibility comes with experience.

Q: How do you look at the present day Marathi Cinema? Do you think that the Story plays crucial role in success of such films?
A: It’s not always the case. The story has to be good. But, what if the story is not presented well in the screenplay? Actually, it is the combined effort of all, that counts in film’s success.

Working with Shahrukh, was a memorable experience – Atul Todankar
For the past 15 years, Atul Todankar has been entertaining the audience on stage and television; but he received the recognition of an actor like a rubber stamp, with Zee Marathi’s reality show ‘Fu Bai Fu’. Atul himself admits that Zee is like his aunty, to offer him all that he aspired for, i.e. Name, fame and right kind of roles. His latest achievement is an ad film that too for Dish TV, along with none other than Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan. In fact, Atul received his first break on Television, through Sachin Pilgaonkar’s ‘Tu Tu Main Main’. Knowing his ability, Sachin offered him a chance in his dance show ‘Ekapeksha Ek’, offering him a partner like Vishakha. Thereafter, it was ‘Fu Bai Fu’ with Anshuman Vichare and since then Atul’s progress has been noteworthy.
The beginning of 2012 has been most memorable for him, having done an ad with Shahrukh Khan and getting two good offers from Marathi Dramas, namely Rajesh Deshpande’s ‘Aaho Rahoo Dhyana Ghari’ which will be staged on the auspicious Gudhi Padwa day and Shekhar Dhavlikar’s ‘A Aaicha B Baicha’ which will be staged in April 2012. Atul is all excited about these two projects, as he plays both the roles opposite his favorite actress Nirmiti Sawant, with whom he had performed in the past at the beginning of his acting career on stage. It may be recalled that Atul has worked with many known people like Santosh Pawar and Kedar Shinde. He played as replacement for Shreyas Talpade in the play ‘Tur Tur’ in the past.
A student of Mumbai’s Shardashram School, known for cricket, Atul has seen all those cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli creating records for his school. Sachin is two years senior to him and he did inspire Atul to take up cricket. But, Atul had other plans. After his 12th, Atul joined Engineering in Mumbai’s VJTI college and even passed with a good percentage. He even got his placement in a good company through Campus recruitment. But, suddenly he developed interest for stage, when he saw his friends like Paddy and Vikas perform during a drama rehearsal. Atul thought that there was a lot of creativity in this field. He decided to pursue this new hobby and hence joined BEST as an Engineer, as he very well knew that BEST encouraged artistes like Prashant Damle, Sharad Ponkshe and others.
Atul went on to win many awards while in the service of BEST and received good support from his employers and superiors, whenever he was required to perform. At present, Atul is on special leave, having been associated with many projects; but his employers have told him to return to his job, within next two years, if he so desires. With the available time with him, Atul wants to make the best use of it by focusing his attention on good roles. The two big stage assignments he has in hand, would certainly open the doors for him on television and films. He is already doing a serial ‘Puneri Misal’ and ‘Fu Bai Fu’ has already brought him name and fame.
Recalling his most memorable moment in life, Atul remembers the day, when he was selected to play a friend of Shahrukh Khan for the Dish TV advertisement, released recently. “It so happened that I was busy shooting for ‘Puneri Misal’, when I received a call from a coordinator to report for audition of this advertisement. But, I could not report, as my shooting got over late in the evening. Next day, I received a call again and they asked me to report. So, I managed to report that day and they took my audition for all eight different characters. When I received the call again to inform me that I was short listed and was required to report for dress rehearsal, still I was not that serious; as on that day too, I was on my way to Pune. But, they agreed for the next day. When I went there, I was told that I was doing the ad along with Shahrukh Khan. It was a great moment for me, when on the actual shooting day, I met him. He released my tension by himself introducing to me and gave me a hug, when I told him that I couldn’t believe my eyes that I was working with him,” says Atul, while narrating the incident.
“For me, Shahrukh was a great inspiration, as I found him a perfect professional actor, who comes prepared for all his scenes. He takes his own time to rehearse the scene and is very systematic in his work. There are many good qualities of him that I learned during my association with him for about 7 hours on the sets. I closely observed him. It was an experience to remember, ” he concludes.
“Transition into a scene after a break, is the most important phase for an artist”- Ashwini Ekbote
She has been part of Marathi stage, TV and films for quite some time now. But, as an actress she has maintained a low profile in this entertainment world. Ashwini Ekbote is an actress par excellence, when it comes to quickly re entering into a character, after a break or cut. Marathi Movie World spoke to Ashwini, during the rehearsal of her new play ‘Eka kshanat’. When asked to comment on requirement of a button artist in acting field, she said, “It is very easy to break a scene, after the director calls ‘cut’. Sometimes, you are disappointed. But, the transition into a scene after a break, is the most important phase for an artist and I pay more attention on this aspect.”We have seen Ashwini’s performance in the past. She has worked very hard; but hasn’t received the kind of success. In short, her real potential was not exploited. There was one film ‘Kshan Ha Mohacha’ directed by Sanjeev Konate, which was also made in Hindi “Ek Pal Pyar ka’, where Ashwini’s real capacity as an actress was clearly noticed, to some extent. This movie talked about a married couple , not having a child and the wife played by Ashwini desperately in urge to have a child. She imagines a doll as her child and turns hysteric on many occasions. Sharad Ponkshe played her husband in this film.
In fact, Ashwini’s chemistry with Sharad Ponkshe as her co star, has worked very well so far. Both have also acted together on stage as well as in serials, besides movies. No wonder Sharad opted for her as his co star in the new Marathi play ‘Eka kshanat’, which is directed by him. In this play, Ashwini has wider scope to display her talent, as the entire play revolves around her character.
Ashwini was seen in full command over her character during the rehearsal scenes, as she played Prerna, the wife of Sharad Ponkshe and in the subsequent scene she was found in the character of Sapna, where she gave an impression that she had turned hysterical. Very intensely she performed these scenes and the truth behind those important scenes was revealed only after watching this play during the inaugural show, few days ago.
When Ashwini was asked to comment on this role, she said, ” I liked this role, as the script of this play itself is full of twists and turns, with a wonderful plot that makes the life of a couple miserable. We have heard the stories about the victims of terrorist attacks and Bomb blasts taking place; but, this play presents the actual psychological effect of such a shocking moment on the lives of relatives of the victims.” She was very sure that the Marathi drama lovers would welcome this play, for its timely presentation which related to the tensions in the lives of the people living in busy towns and cities .
Ashwini has already proved her acting skills through whatever came to her share in some of her recently released films like ‘Debu‘, ‘High Command‘ and serials like ‘Tu Bhetashi Navyane’ & ‘Kashyala Udyachi Baat'; but, her role in ‘Eka kshanaat’ gives her recognition as a complete actress. Now, she glows like a real star in Marathi Entertainment industry. Thanks to producer of this play Uday Dhurat, writer Sandeep Jangam and Director Sharad Ponkshe.
“Your good work speaks for itself ” – Neena Kulkarni
For almost little more than thirty years, she has been in the acting field. Out of 41 films in which she has performed, most of them have been in Hindi. However, though she has done only 10 Marathi films, without finding a lead role, she has always been considered as the most talented and respected actress in Marathi film industry. Even with a small role, she has the ability to create an impact of her character, through any film.
Neena Kulkarni started her acting career with Marathi Theatre, followed by television and then films. She has done a lot of work, during the past three decades. She has also worked in a couple of international projects including one English film ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ and a French serial ‘Raani’. Though she has done selective movies in Hindi and Marathi; all her roles have been remarkable. She has also done many Television Ads, like Bisleri, Sprite, Mother Diary, Cadbury & others.
Couple of years ago, we saw Neena Kulkarni in Sachin Kundalkar directed film ‘Gandh’. And, now, she is also a part of one more similar kind of experimental Marathi Movie ‘Bioscope’ , where 4 different short films will be clubbed together. Her other two movies are also releasing this month, including ‘Hello Nandan‘ and ‘Taptapadi’. Marathi Movie world, spoke to this versatile actress. Excerpts from an interview:
Q: You are getting noticed for your performance in Hindi entertainment Industry. Your roles in the film ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ and TV serial ‘Yen hai Mohabbatein’ have been highly appreciated. What is your reaction ?
A: It was a really great time, working in ‘Hasee toh Phasee’. I enjoyed a lot. I always like to work with new talented people. It is interesting to see, how they perceive every situation in the film. .
Q: How you have managed to keep good contacts with people from Hindi industry?
A: (Smiles). I haven’t kept any contacts, as such., I’m a terrible person, honestly. I never engaged a PR agency and all sort of such things. But, believed in one thing, that ‘Good Work speaks for itself’. Also, from the very beginning, I’m working in Hindi industry. I’m also comfortable in that language. There was a time, when I have done more work in Hindi than Marathi. I would genuinely like to work in Hindi. There is a different perspective about acting, in Hindi industry. I’m glad that I am working in both Hindi and Marathi industry equally. It depends on you, how much you take from them.
Q: So, it seems, you are still choosy while selecting films ?
A: Yes, to be frank, there is a difference in making a choice about Marathi and Hindi., In Marathi, I’m very particular, while choosing the films. The role should be appealing . I don’t do same kind of roles, which I have played previously.
Q: Tell us something about your upcoming films?
A: I have done two Bollywood Films one is ‘Hunter’ which is directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni and another untitled Movie is directed Bejoy Nambiar, who directed ‘David’ ‘last year. I have quite a few more ads, coming up soon.
Q: What about Marathi Movies?
A: Two movies will release in this month. Also, in next month there is another release where I have done a major role in ‘Dil-E-Nadan’ directed by Gajendra Ahire.
Q: Tell us something about your role in Taptapadi?
A: ‘Taptapadi’ is based on the story written by Rabindranath Tagore. I’m playing the character of ‘Durva Aatya’, who is typical woman of that olden era, who is always in the forefront blowing her own trumpet. I haven’t done that kind of role before. It’s an interesting character. The director of this film, Sachin Nagargoje tried to move the film in the same manner, as the original story written by Tagore. Even though, he was a newcomer, I was ready to work in this film, only because of the way he narrated me the story and explained my role. I was impressed by it. I’m sure, People will surely appreciate the film.
Q: How you look at television field ?
A: After my husband’s untimely passing away, I had to look upon television as a new career. My first daily soap was ‘Adhuri ek Kahani’ on Zee Marathi. During the earlier days, I was little bit scared about daily soaps. Working for 12-14 hours was a hard task. Moreover, I was also doing Hindi serials those days. And today, I can say, I love Television. It is close to theatre. Every day, there is something new in your role.
Q: We haven’t seen you on television after ‘Unch Majha Zoka’, Why so ?
A: To be honest, I’m not much interested in Marathi television. I have done Unch Majha Zoka’, just because there was something new and different. I would like to play only good roles. You have to stick to your choice of good roles. You can’t take up any and every role that comes to you. I do remember, I had an offer from Ekta Kapoor, for the role of Usha ‘s mother, in ‘Pavitra Rishta’. But, I didn’t find that character interesting. So, I refused the same.
Q: Whom do you treat as your Guru in this acting field?
A: I highly respect Vijayabai Mehta. Now days, I am always with her, and I find time to assist her in her works. Even she likes my company. You may call it ‘Guru seva’. Even I learned many things from Satyadev Dubeji.
Q: So, in days to come, can we see you playing the role of a director ?
A: Can’t say. But, I am keen to direct a project. I would also love to teach acting to new comers. Side by side, my acting work in films and serials would go on.
Q: Which role portrayed by you has been close to your heart?
A: That way, all roles are dear to me. But, special mention is about my role in ‘Shevari’. It was my own home production. Besides that my role in ‘Savat Majhi Ladki’, has also been close to me.
Q: Are you missing your husband – Dilip, today?
A: Yes, but I get the feeling that he is always with me.
Q: But, do you think that his presence today, would have taken you miles ahead in achieving success?
A: I never thought that way. In fact, when I made the film ‘Shevari’, it was a tribute to my late husband, as he always desired to produce a film. Perhaps, with his presence, together, we could have produced more films. I haven’t changed myself, after his death and haven’t done anything, that he did not like.
Q: What is your message, to all the newcomers in this acting profession?
A: If you have to give your best, you need to focus more on reading book and observing different people. Today,we find many artistes thing big, after performing in one or two serials or films. All that is important is to be sincere to yourself.
