MMW remembers him on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
Vijay Tendulkar, India’s leading contemporary playwright and social analyst was a great theatre personality. He came into limelight as a playwright in 1967 with his absorbing play’Shantata Court Chalu Aahe’ and five years later his ‘Sakharam Binder’ created sensation on Marathi stage. In the same year, his musical ‘Ghashiram Kotwal’ also became hit. Mr.Tendulkar continued with his success as a writer with plays like ‘Kamala’ and ‘Gidhade’ that followed with more sensation.
His entry into films as a screenplay writer was also sensational with startling Marathi and Hindi films simultaneously. ‘Nishant’, ‘Samna’,’Aakroash’, Sinhasan’, ‘Umbertha’ and ‘Ardha satya’ are few of them, which are still fresh in our memory. His contribution to Stage, films and even television through his awareness programmes, is laudable.
