Raw deal to Marathi Movies in Nagpur

Marathi Movie World readers from Nagpur have expressed their strong feelings about the raw deal given to Marathi Cinema in their city and have questioned as to why majority of the theatres are not showing Maratrhi films, in spite of this city being termed as the second capital of Maharashtra? The following facts have been brought to our notice by our readers who have been deprived of watching Marathi films in theatres.

Till the end of 2000, there were 24 single screen cinemas in Nagpur. The number has now been reduced to 15 single screens. In addition to this, there are 3 multiplex cinema houses. Out of 15 single screens, one cinema house sometimes shows Marathi movies.
Multiplexes do not screen Marathi movies. Only exception being Cinemax, which had recently organised a week long special shows of Marathi movies (one movie-one show- per day throughout Maharashtra). Most of the Marathi movies released in 2010-11 were not exhibited here.

Last year, Nirzer film society had organised a festival of Marathi Movies for only one week. All the shows were house full. Tremendous response was received from public to this festival. Is that not enough for the film distributors and Cinema owners to understand the demand for Marathi films? Or, is this a deliberate attempt to push aside Marathi cinema only to market Hindi films?

Earlier in the evening, Pushkar Shrotri, who also played anchor of this show did his job well by offering some variety entertainment in between the performances. His exchange of humour with Aarti Solanki and comedian Bhushan Kadu worked very well, offering some form of entertainment to the thousands of spectators present at the stadium. Zee Marathi used this platform for the clever promotion of their forthcoming film ‘Mast Chalalay Aamcha’ which is being released on 29th April 2011. The arrival of Zee Marathi’s popular Bhau as a reliever for Pushkar Shrotri at the end of the show also hinted his return as Bhauji in ‘Home Minister’ from 16th May 2011.

In the main presentations of the other three dancers qualified for the finals, it was Neha Pendse, who began with ‘Gallit Ghala Gondhal’ followed Girija Oak’s ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and Urmila Kanetkar’s popular ‘Gondhal’ from Jogwa. Though, it was an outstanding performance of the day coming from Urmila, who was fully charged during this dance, it was the charming girl- Mrunmayee, who walked with the award, based on popularity votes. The Mahaguru of this dance reality show- Sachin Pilgaonkar, who was present on the final day as the only judge, while giving his own verdict said that he rated all four dancers equally talented and hence didn’t like to choose a winner of his choice. “All four of them are joint winners, according to me, but the public opinion is the final,” he said.
