Marathi Film ‘Ashtavakra’

Ashtavakra‘ is the first Marathi film which has been shot at the location of Kolhapur Central Jail. And therefore, before its official theatre release on 8th June 2018, the makers of this film and writer- director Pradeep Salunke had specially organised the premiere of this film recently in the Kolhapur Central Jail in presence of jail superintendent Sharad Shelke, Police Chief (Women’s Wing) and 63 Women prisoners.

Speaking about the story of this film writer- director Pradeep Salunke said, “I had read something about the women prisoners and their children. Picking up this theme, I worked hard to elaborate this issue for almost three years, to give a cinematic look to this story. Just imagine, if a pregnant woman is arrested and brought into the jail as a prisoner and she delivers during her jail sentence. The story of ‘Ashtavakra’ has emerged from such an incidence. To make this film more realistic I met these children, whose mothers were undergoing jail sentence and was really stunned. Also studied the jail manual and this helped me a lot during the making of this film.
