‘Rakhandaar’ says, “Yalkot Yalkot Jai Malhar….”

Rakhandaar Movie
Rating: ★★
Studio / Presenter: Surya Film Creation
Producer: Dr. Mrunalinni Patil
Director: Dr. Mrunalinni Patil
DOP: Jehangir Chowdhury
Music: Kanak Raj, Sameer Phaterpekar
Cast: Ajinkya Deo, Jitendra Joshi, Anuja Sathe, Satish Pulekar,

Genre: Drama
Movie Review by:  Keerti Kadam

Surya Film Creation’s new Marathi movie ‘Rakhandaar’, which was in news recently, is releasing on 26th Sept ’14 all over Maharashtra. In this world, some feel that God is to be felt within, while the atheists question about existence of God. Producer, Director Dr. Mrunalinni Patil, has toyed with this idea, in her latest film ‘Raakhandaar’.

A simpleton, Sadanand Lokre (Jitendra Joshi), is an innocent person, who believes in helping his neighbours without any expectations. But, in the process, loses his job and starts working in his late father’s shop as a cobbler, with the only thought in his mind, ‘work is worship’. Khushaba (Ajinkya Deo), appears in the scene, as a villager with his special attire, and meets Sadanand, who realizes and believes that Khushaba is godly personality.

Ajinkya Deo

In comes, Australia returned Madhavi (Anuja Sathe), who falls in love with the innocence of Sadanand and they get married, defying Madhavi’s father’s wish of she getting married to the Manager in his office. Later, she gives birth to a son. Just before that Sadanand prays to God, for a son. But, unaware of her husband’s wish, Madhavi promises a return gift to God, that she shall return the same back to him.

There’s a villain in the form of Manager, (Anup Choudhary), who is bent upon marrying Madhavi, who tries, in vain, to spoil her marital bliss; with his childish acts. Khashaba – the Raakhandaar, of whom Sadanand & Madhavi’s son Chhota- Malhar (Master Shreeveer Kadam), also gets extremely fond of; affectionately calls him Devappa, who is always there to rescue our Sadanand whenever in trouble.

The story by Anand More, is a bit lengthy and screenplay also bit patchy. Some scenes erupt abruptly, without any connection to previous scene. Editing should have been handled a bit professionally. Jitendra Joshi does justice to Sadanand, with his innocent face and his couple of one-liners do collect laughter. Anuja Sathe has done very well, as bubbly as well as serious Madhavi and has good screen presence. Ajinkya Deo who plays Raakhandaar, looks handsome in this character and has done justice to his role. Music (Kanak Raj, Sameer Phaterpekar) is saving grace of the movie and filming of songs is very good. Background score of Sameer Phaterpekar, is apt.

Cinematographer Jehangir Choudhary is successful in capturing the required mood of the film. Director, Dr Mrunalinni Patil has tried to camouflage fiction with drama, with some philosophy thrown in. There’s always a next time. Jai Maharashtra. Jai Malhar…..Yalkot Yalkot Jai Malhar.

‘Bhatukli’ plays mind game with audience

Bhatukali Poster

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Sagar Ballary who made popular Bollywood films ‘Bheja Fry’ 1 & 2, has turned producer with his new Marathi film ‘Bhatukli’, allowing his assistant Rohit Joshi to direct this film on his own story. ‘Bhatukli’ explores the world of one such person Shrikant Deshmukh( Ajinkya Deo) ; who has achieved everything through his successful business; but, is still detached from his family.

Ajinkya Deo, Shilpa Tulaskar, Bhatukli, MovieThe film begins with the entire family of Shrikant Deshmukh, comprising of his wife – Janaki ( Shilpa Tulaskar), Mother( Smita Talwalkar), eldest son Aditya ( Sameer Paranjape), daughter-Bhargavi ( Tanvi Kishore) and the youngest son( Saieel Shelar), assembled at the holiday bungalow of Shrikant Deshmukh, at the request of Shrikant’s Personal Secretary Ramesh ( Shashant Shende). As they are all getting ready to celebrate the 51st birthday of Shrikant Deshmukh, he walks in a serious mood; to be welcomed by a huge birthday cake and a present from his youngest son. But, feeling annoyed with this gesture, he walks towards his room, without any reaction.

The family is soon joined by Shrikant’s brother Ravikant ( Sunil Barve),who is welcomed by Shrikant, offering him a drink. As the day progresses, we find Shrikant interacting with each and every family member independently, to understand them better ; but, finally has his say. His three children are seen uniting against his dominant attitude, till we notice the entry of a stranger, i.e. Shrikant’s old IIT’an friend Shantanu Atre, arriving to meet him on his short trip to India from USA, at the stroke of interval.

In the post interval session, we see the entire group proceeding for a day’s picnic, at a place of shrikant’s choice. Over here, we notice uneasiness of Ravikant, whom we notice making advances towards Janaki. It is only after the departure of Shantanu, that we notice the unfolding of the mystery. Actually, the film which has a unique story, has tried to present a mind game with the audience.

Ajinkya Deo Shilpa Tulaskar BhatukliThere are only two songs in this film, which have been used at the right places. Cinematography captures some beautiful outdoor locations very well. But, the highlight of the film are the performances from all the artistes. Very cleverly, they have been able to express their emotions, in every scene to their share. Ajinkya Deo looks a perfect choice for this role and he has done a good job. Shilpa Tulaskar, who has better scope, in spite of her character role of Shrikant’s wife, is impressive through her right expressions at every situation. Good support comes from Smita Talwalkar, Tanvi Kishore, Saieel Shelar, Shashank Shende and debutant Sameer Paranjape.

The film becomes slow, little before interval; but the entry of Kiran Karmarkar almost at the stroke of interval, brings some life into the screenplay, in the post interval session. There is no doubt that Kiran has found a good role in this film; and he has pumped in all his energy into the character, to make the film more lively. One wonders, as to why this talented actor hasn’t found suitable roles in Marathi films? As a writer-director, debutant Rohit Joshi, certainly makes his presence felt, through the screenplay of this film. However, few scenes in this film, are not very convincing, taking into account the target Maharashtrian audience. But, the presentation part is good.

If you are keen on solving this mind game, played by this film, watch every scene with total concentration. Check, whether you can find the clues , to avoid the unexpected surprise in the climax. So, give it a try. Certainly, a different subject for Marathi film viewers.

Interview of Ajinkya Deo

ajinkya-deo-interview-image
Years ago, the superhit marathi movie ‘Sarja’ marked the rise of a star. Ajinkya Deo, the tall dark and handsome youth captured the audience with his acting skills and looks. Later on he tasted success with hits like ‘Maaherachi Sadi’, ‘Sarakaarnama’. Though his stint with Hindi movie industry was not much successful, marathi movie goers have not forgotten him yet.

After a long period of absence, Ajinkya is back with his home production ‘Vasudev Balwant Phadake’. MMW gets up and close with Ajinkya.
After staying away from the movie industry for so long, what prompted you to do this film?
This movie is my Father’s dream which he has been cherishing for the past 9 years. It took so long because there was not much information available on Vasudev Balvant Phadke. It seems that the name has faded into oblivion. It was really saddening to find so less about this foremost warrior in the annals of freedom fight.
`My father was sad to see the deeds of Vasudev Balvant Phadake going unnoticed in the histroy. He really felt that the freedom fighter should get his due. Being from the movie industry, he felt that there could not be a better way than making a movie. This movie is not produced with intentions of making money, this is to pass on the legend of Vasudev Balvant Phadake to everyone.
So what are your experiences about producing the movie?
When we deicide to produce the movie, there was hardly any inforamtion avaialble. we got much information from the court proceedings of case against vasudev balvant phadke. besides, the director Gajendra Ahire has done his MA in history, so that helped a lot.
This is the first marathi movie shot in Rajsthan. We had to work in the early morning to avoid the intense heat. The entire team got full supporters and the whole experience was amazing.
ajinkya-deo-interview-image1
Any special preparations for the role of Vasude Balvant Phadake.
I am director’s actor. I have tried to convey whatever I have learned about the character. I have tried to gather as much information as possible. I think that it’s important to identify with the character that you are going to play. And I have done just that. Gajendra was a lot help. He made me forget myself and think as Vasudev Phadke. We have also taken lots of efforts on my look.

VasudevBalwantPhadake
Comedy movies are in today well and yet you are venturing with an Historical epic. Moreover, there is no audience for marathi movies today. What do you have to say about that?
It’s true that there is not much audience for marathi movies these days. The poor production values are to be blamed for that. There is hardly any thought given to the publicity of the movie. Most of the producers finish the movie and release it without any publicity whatsoever. How do you expect the audience to watch a movie if they never know when a movie is released. I think that all the producers should think about the presentation and publicity and try to attract as much viewers as possible.

The people want something new and its our duty to fulfill their expectations. We should learn from the hindi movie industry about promoting a movie.

Will you compare Vasudev Balvant Phadke with ‘The Rising’?
The rising was a Hindi movie. There have been movies like it in hindi film industry before. But ‘Vasudev Balvant Phadake’ is the first historical movie of such a grand scale in marathi. Maharashtra government and Pune Municipality have been very helpful to us during the making of this movie.Entire team has worked hard to realise this dream. We hope the audience appreciates our attempt at bringing the legend to the screen.

“I am a director’s actor” – Ajinkya Deo

He has been in the acting field for almost three decades now. But he has maintained himself very well. Having been blessed with a good height and fine personality, he still invites all your attention, while on screen. Ajinkya Deo is still going strong and has been receiving good offers, well suited to him. Recently, we saw him in out of the box Marathi film ‘Shashi Deodhar’ , while he also appeared in Anil Kapoor’s popular action TV serial ’24’.

ajinkya-dev-actor-picture-interview-imageWhatever characters Ajinkya has played so far, were with total conviction. At present, his new film ‘Bhatukli’ is all set to release on 13th June and Ajinkya is playing the central lead character of a successful businessman, who feels detached from his family members, comprising of three children and wife. This film is produced by Sagar Ballary (director of Bollywood film ‘Bheja Fry’ ) and directed by his assistant Rohit Joshi, who has also written the story of this film.

It was a pleasure talking to this talented actor, who spoke about his present assignments and his commitment to this filed. Excerpts from an interview.

Q: Just saw the first look of your forthcoming Marathi film ‘Bhatukli’ and you have a very good role. Can we say, it’s a comeback film for you?
A: I would not say that this is a comeback film, as I have recently done a film ‘Shashi Deodhar’ and four more films of mine, will also be released by end of this year. But, surely, I would call it a big role in this film, to test my ability, as an actor.

Q: You always say that you are a director’s actor. Can you elaborate on it?
A: Yes, I still hold that statement. As an actor, I always believed to prepare myself with the dialogues from the script given to me. And, when I go to the sets, I leave myself to the director and do as he wants me to react to every situation. This has helped me to perform differently, every time. It has also helped me to learn new things, playing different characters.

Q: That is indicative, with your performance playing different characters in films like ‘Ringa Ringa’, ‘Jetaa’, ‘Dubhang’ and ‘Shashi Deodhar’. Isn’t it ?
A: Yes, you are right. And, you would have noticed the director through these characters played by me, besides my own performance.

Q: Why did your films like ‘Jeta’ and ‘Shashi Deodhar’ didn’t do well, in spite of their good scripts?
A: It is very difficult to find audience in large number, immediately after the film’s release, unless the film is marketed well by big production or distribution companies.

actor-ajinkya-deo-photo-imageQ: What are the other projects, you are associated with ?
A: I am doing ‘Natee’ with Tejaa Deokar, which revolves around the life of an actress. I am playing the character of a director in this film, which has grey shade. The film is directed by Yogesh Pawar. There is ‘Raakhandar’ a big period film, where I am playing Khandoba. I am glad that I am playing this role. Then, there is ‘Salt, Pepper Aani Prem’ directed by Rahul Jadhav, which is a different film. One more film I am doing, is also totally different for Marathi viewers, almost on the style of ‘Delhi Belly’. So, they are all different and challenging roles for me. All these films are likely to be released by end of this year.

Q: Now, looking at the character of Shrikant Deshmukh you play in ‘Bhatukli’ , which has some relevance to everybody’s life in today’s materialistic world. But, still, the emotional bond is very strong among Maharashtrian families. How do you describe the love and affection of your own parents showered upon you, even after you have yourself turned a responsible father.
A: Sometimes, that emotional attachment is more than required. But, that’s our way of living. All the parents are always concerned about their children. Even after being liberal with my own children, sometimes, even I behave like that and show more concern towards them. Luckily, my son is more understanding; and knows what is good and bad for him. He is just back from Canada and now with us. I also have a daughter and I love them all.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

After a long time, there is a Marathi film, which has a good narrative story, filled with suspense. ‘Sou Shashi Deodhar’ is actually a mystery filled film, which is well presented by director Amol Shetge, who has himself written the story of this film. You may also call it a psychological thriller, which revolves around a middle class young married woman, who identifies herself as Ms.Shubhada Shashi Deodhar, after she recovers from a hit by the car driven by Dr. Ajinkya Vartak, during one rainy night.

Since it is a road accident, it involves police investigation and Dr.Ajinkya is held up in the hospital, till the young woman gives her statement to the police, after her recovery, admitting that it was her own fault, as she lost her balance. But, her real identity still remains a mystery; as Dr. Ajinkya, who has been asked by the police officer to drop her at the address given by her, turns out to be owned by somebody else. Even the description given by the lady about her husband, does not match with the person located. Finally, the police issue an advertisement in the newspaper, with her photo and till that time, the lady finds shelter at Dr. Ajainkya’s house. Being a bachelor and a psychiatrist, he not only takes good care of her; but, also does the job of police department, to locate Shashi Deodhar, with the help of a social networking site.

Sai Tamhankar

In the meanwhile, reading the advertisement, a young man Mr. Thakur( Aniket kelkar) with his one leg injured, walks into the police station, claiming the young lady as his wife- Nilima. But, the young lady refuses to identify him as her husband. So, the husband asks the police to take her to her father; who identifies her as his daughter. But, the lady claiming herself as Shubhada, is then brought in contact with Mr. Shashi Deodhar and his real wife Shubhada. Even after meeting them, the lady tells Dr. Ajinkya that she does not know them. Finally, Dr.Ajinkya, with her consent and taking the police officer into confidence, injects her with sodium pentothal drug, to make her confess the truth, in the concluding part of the film.

From start till the end, director Amol Shetge has cleverly kept the pace of the film, holding the grip on his story. Few scenes in the film look irrelevant. But, very cleverly, he has introduced new characters in the screenplay one by one, to keep the mystery. Even he has taken a break for interval, at the right time, in this little less than 2 hour length film. The concluding part unfolds the mystery in a very systematic manner, to make this film an absorbing fiction. suresh Deshmane’s cinematography is good. Music and background music is apt for this kind of mystery filled tale.

Sai Tamhankar, known for her glamorous roles, has found an opportunity to play a simple middle class married woman, suffering from a split personality disorder. She is highly impressive in a different role, through this film. In the role of Dr.Ajinkya Vartak, Ajinkya Deo has played his part very naturally. He seemed to be a perfect choice for this role. In the supporting cast, Aniket Kelkar, Avinash Kharshikar,Tushar Dalvi, Janardan Parab, producer Shilpa Shirodkar –Ranjit’s daughter Anushka, her husband Ranjit, director Amol Shetge himself and others have offered a good support. Tushar looks different in his new get up.

‘Sou Shashi Deodhar’ has certainly succeeded to bring in that desired change in Marathi films, with a new subject, which is socially so relevant. Thanks to Shilpa and her husband Ranjit for their debut offering. But, the kind of publicity done by the film, it failed to find the crowds at theatres on the first day. Growel- kandivali, witnessed just 10 people, for 1.10 pm show. Hope that the film picks up well, in next two days.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Family is the most important thing in this world. And in Maharashtra, there is a lot of importance for family bond. No matter, today there is a generation gap existing in almost every family; but, the traditional culture in Maharashtra has always kept such families together. Today, we see our new generation following the westernised culture. But, in spite of that today’s wise parents don’t put many restrictions on their children’s movement during late night hours , realizing the pressure of studies and competition they are required to face. However, many a times, it is the bad company of their children, that poses serious problems. New Marathi film ‘Thoda Tujha Thoda Majha’ takes up this most timely sensitive subject, to present a sensible film, involving all the three generations.

Set on the backdrop of Pune city, the film opens up with a raid on a Rave party of youngsters. In that group is a young boy Sameer Sawant( Nikhil Kakade) from a well to do family and only son of his parents Ramesh & Malati Sawant ( Ajinkya Deo and Varsha Usgaonkar) . When Sameer’s father seeks the help of his influential friend and goes to the Police station, to rescue his son, he faces humiliation. It is not only the ACP at the Police station( Ashok Samarth) , who makes him realize his duty as a parent; but also a TV news reporter exposes him. While the boy is released on bail; with the report of the blood samples awaited, the father who feels cheated by his pampered son, drives him out of the house.

Luckily for the boy, his grandparents, who are on a visit to their place, take him along with them, to their native place. The Boy finds a big change in his own self and returns back to Pune, to give a big surprise to his parents on their 25th Wedding Anniversary. But, around this time, the parents receive another news. And that’s the turning point of this film in the climax.

Vikram Gokhale Nikhil Kakade

It’s not that films on such subjects haven’t been dealt by Marathi cinema. In the past Smita Talwalkar had presented one such sensible film ‘7 Chya aat Gharat’ , to show how too much of liberty could land youngsters into trouble. ‘Thoda Tujha Thoda Majha’ shows both the sides very well. While showing the concern of parents, it has also shown the point of view of youngsters. Through this film, the film maker has tried to show that it is the proper communication between the youngsters and their parents, could avoid many problems. At the same time, he has also shown how a bad company could land such youngsters from well to do family into trouble.

The youngsters selected in this film are most appropriate choice and look like real final year college students, with their body language and other activities. It is only the young hero of this film, falls short in acting in their company, especially while delivering some of the dialogues . But, at some important situations, while interacting with parents, he seems okay. The sincere effort put in by the film maker in presenting such a timely subject with a message, is to be highly appreciated. In the role of grand parents, both Vikram Gokhale and Sulbha Deshpande have played their parts with perfect understanding, trying to find quick solutions on differences between parents and their only child.

In the role of Sameer’s father, Ajinkya Deo is a perfect choice. He has been able to deliver, what was expected from him, at different situations. Varsha Usgaonkar, who plays a wise mother, looks still beautiful and fit, setting an ideal example before today’s young actresses. In the role of Sameer’s girlfriend, Model turned TV actress Sukhada Thigale (‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’ fame) does a satisfying debut, though she doesn’t find much scope in this film. Pushkar Jog does a cameo in style, indicating that today’s youngsters pay more attention to their work, rather than formal clothes. Music by Tabi Parik is just fine; but Ishwar Bidri’s photography is something very special. He has captured the beauty of Konkan very nicely. Ashok Samarth plays the aggressive ACP in his typical style, while Dr. Vilas Ujavane plays his part with ease. All others in supporting cast have done a good job.

‘Thoda Tujha Thoda Majha’ is a worth watch for entire family. It has something very important to convey, which is so relevant to parents and their young children.
