‘Parinati’ will be the first Marathi film to release on OTT platform
Due to spread of Corona virus and ongoing Lockdown Marathi film industry has also come to a complete halt for the past two months. As a result of this, there have been no releases of films due to closure of cinema halls. And one doesn’t know how long it will take for the theatre business to start . Due to this problem, Some of our Bollywood film makers have already opted for OTT platform to release their films, instead of waiting for the theatres to reopen.
Producer Paraag Mehta, who is also renowned casting director of Bollywood films, therefore feels that regional films will also have to depend on OTT platform, as an alternative to get their films released. “Somebody had to take the lead and I have done so, by taking this decision to release this Marathi film ‘Parinati’ through OTT platform . And we have been receiving positive response . Very soon we will announce the date of release.” he said.
This film stars Amruta Subhash, Sonalee Kulkarni and Akshar Kothari in the lead roles and is directed by debutante Akshay Balsaraf.

Well Known writer and Journalist Arun Sadhu is no more. But, the illustrious Marathi writer will always be remembered for the wonderful gift he has offered to the voracious readers through his 26 books. And one of them is his novel ‘Ziprya’, which described very effectively the actual lifestyle of the group of teenaged shoeshine boys in the city of Mumbai. With this interesting story in hand, film maker Kedar Vaidya who has also written the screenplay and dialogues of his new film with the same title, has actually paid tributes to the prolific writer & Journalist.
Keeping all the original characters of the writer intact, Kedar has worked hard on presenting this subject very realistically, by choosing the right locations in Mumbai. And the result on screen has been too good. In short, Kedar has brought every important character of the writer lively on screen and this is his biggest achievement. With the maximum number of scenes shot outdoors, has given a very realistic look to this story. The inter connection of every shoe shine boy with the other and their willingness to come out of their routine and see big dreams, has also been shown very effectively , using the cinematic liberties. What is more appealing is that he has also succeeded in sending across a strong message to the society, through this action filled film with emotional touch.
Kedar has picked up the right artistes to play all those important characters, which is also another plus point of this film. And all these artistes, namely Chinmay Kambli( as Ziprya) , Prathamesh Parab( as Aslam) , Hansraj Jagtap( as Ganju), Amruta Subhash( as Leela), Nachiket Purnapatre( Pinglya), Pravin Tarde( Pakyabhai) ,Deepak karanjikar ( Kirtane Master),and few others, have done full justice to their respective characters. The action scenes of Abbas Ali Mughal , background music of Toufiq Qureshi and fine editing work by Devendra Murdeshwar makes this film more presentable. There are very few drawbacks noticed in this film. But, looking at the efforts of the team in presenting this interesting tale, it is certainly a worth watch film.

The film revolved around an 11-year-old child played by Archit Deodhar who faces a difficult time coping with the death of his father and transfer of his working Mother ( Amruta Subhash) to other place. The film was selected for the 64th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Crystal Bear by the Children’s Jury in the Generation Plus Selection.
Now, Amruta Subhash and Archit Deodhar are returning through another film ‘6 Guun’ , where they will be playing the roles of Mother and son respectively. ‘Where there is a will, there is a way‘. About 30 months ago, producer Dr.Mohan Agashe and the director duo of Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukhtankar offered a sensible film ‘Astu‘, highlighting the concern of a daughter for her retired Father, who is suffering from Alzheimer. Unfortunately, the makers of this film could not distribute this film, for financial reasons. But, for the past two years, they received good support from the audience and lovers of such quality films. Now, with their financial support, ‘Astu‘ has been released in theatres all over Maharashtra. The film has already won several awards, including two national awards.
The story of ‘Astu‘ revolves around Dr. Chakrapani Shastri( Dr. Mohan Agashe) , a retired Sanskrit Scholar, who is suffering from Alzheimer. Though he lives separately in his own house in Pune, in the company of a student, who has come from village and a cook to prepare food for him; his daughter Ira Phatak (Irawati Harshe) and her Doctor husband ( Milind Soman) are in constantly touch with him. One day morning, when Ira picks up her father from his house, to take him to her house, she takes a halt in a market , to purchase something for her daughter. She warns her father to be seated in the car. But, after seeing an elephant , he is tempted to take a ride and goes missing, as he doesn’t remember anything, after returning back from a ride. When Ira returns to her car, she is shocked to find her father missing.
Ira calls her husband and both of them desperately go in search of her father everywhere, besides lodging a missing complaint with Police. In the meanwhile, Dr. Shastri follows the elephant, as the Mahout (Keeper of the elephant – Nachiket Purnapatre), after his day’s earnings, returns to his temporary residence, at the bank of river. Finding the old man as an unexpected guest ,the Mahout’s wife Channama( Amruta Subhash) treats him well, with food and water and showers upon him all the love, treating him like a child, after knowing about his ailment. All is well at the end, as the day comes to an end.
Director duo Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukhtankar have paid more attention on making the screenplay interesting. With the help of flashbacks and using other important characters at appropriate places, such as Rahi (Devika Daftardar) second daughter of Dr.Shastri , the two children of Ira, Mrs. Gupte( Ila Bhate) who is Dr.Shastri’s colleague from his research institute& Vasumati( Shubhangi Damle)as Dr.Shastri’s wife, they have tried to generate curiosity in every scene. The director duo has also succeeded in exploiting the acting potential of every important character in the film.
Though, wonderful performances come from Dr.Agashe and Irawati Harshe,it is Amruta Subhash, in the role of Chanamma, steals the show, in those few scenes to her share. Actually, her entry in the film is very late, almost in the post interval session. But, she looks so natural through her expressive face and body language. Good support also comes from Milind Soman, Devika Daftardar, Ila Bhate & Nachiket Purnapatre, through their respective important characters.
Dialogues by Sumitra Bhave are very well written with good support also coming from background music by Sanket Kanetkar. Milind Jog has captured indoor as well as outdoor scenes very creatively through his Lens eye.
‘Astu‘ is a masterpiece from Agashe, Bhave , Sukhtankar & Co. and should not be missed by Marathi film lovers. In short, ‘Astu‘, which means ‘So, be it‘, is a must watch film for all.

Marathi film makers are opening doors for TV artistes
The journey of most of the talented artistes in the acting field, has been from stage to television and finally the feature films. The best examples are artistes like Vikram Gokhale, Nana Patekar, Reema Lagoo, Usha Nadkarni, Shivaji Satam, Ramesh Bhatkar, Amruta Subhash, Sunil Barve, Subodh Bhave, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Siddharth Chandekar and so on. But, now days, some of the artistes directly get into television and films, through modeling , auditions or various reality shows, held to select the best acting talents. And, if you have to be into films, you have to be an all rounder, with acting plus dance skills. Therefore, female artistes in particular are equipping themselves, by learning different forms of dances, besides acting.
However, the general observation for the past few years is that our Marathi film makers have given scope to many television artistes. Right from Sai Tamhankar, Tejaswini Pandit, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Abhijit Khandkekar, Siddharth Chandekar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Santosh Juvekar, Aditi Sarangdhar, Mukta Barve, Umesh kamat, Priya Bapat to Spruha Joshi and so on; everybody found suitable roles in Marathi films.
In the recent past, Mrunal Dusanis also found roles in Marathi films, after her successful career on television. Suyash Tilak has also found roles in films and so have Bhushan Pradhan and Sankruti Balgude, the popular pair of ‘Pinjra’. Very recently, we saw Vaibhav Tatwawadi finding good offers from Marathi films. ‘Swapnanchya Palikadle’ TV actress Gauri Nalavade made a successful debut through ‘Friends’ that too opposite Swapnil Joshi. And now, popular Marathi TV actress Priya Marathe’s two films ‘Vighnaharta Mahaganapati’ and ‘1234’ are ready for release shortly. Isn’t that a good news for our television artistes?
