Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

It seems that now a days modern Marathi film makers have set a new trend of ‘youngsters getting confused, when it actually comes to marriage’. In short, it is all about their mindset in understanding marriage.  So, after Chi Va Sou Kaand Muramba, we find another Marathi film ‘Tujha Tu Majha Mi’ (TTMM) presenting a young couple, confused about the term ‘marriage’. While Jay (Lalit Prabhakar) a young man from a rich family runs away from his house, because his parents feel that it is right time for their son to marry a girl known to him and his family, Rajashri (Neha Mahajan)  a girl from a middle class family also runs away from her house, as her demanding mother wants her to marry a boy, whom she feels is suitable to her daughter, who is already overdue for marriage.

So, the destination for all such youngsters being Goa, both of them coincidentally board the same bus bound for Goa. They occupy seats next to each other only to fight over petty things and finally start liking each other, following the traditional formula of films based on love stories. Only difference is that this couple agree with mutual consent to marry each other, to escape their arrest by a Police Officer ( Bharat Ganeshpure). Being convinced that they are true lovers and treating Rajashri has his sister, the Police Officer being more than generous, offers the couple four day honeymoon package,  inclusive of an escort. Both spend good time with each other, only to be traced by their parents. Having come to know about their marriage, Jay’s parents welcome Rajashri to their house. But, the film’s story takes a new twist, to show their separation. Finally, the film concludes with a predictable climax.

Good thing about this film is its music by Pankaj Padghan provided for few songs played in the background. Also, wonderful cinematography by Mayur Hardas adds that extra flavor to this film. But, in the role of editor of this film, he has created some confusion, with sudden shift of scenes, taxing the audience. Also, inclusion of the character of Sagar ( a small time cable operator and an eve teaser) played by Sagar karande fails to convince, as Rajashri is shown cheating him with a promise for marriage first and later agreeing to marry him, after separating from Jay. This certainly does not send a good message. The director has however presented some emotion filled scenes very well, particularly the one with Vidyadhar Joshi and Lalit Prabhakar in the second half of the film.

Nevertheless, the performances by lead pair are good. Neha Mahajan in particular , is very impressive. Good support comes from Vidyadhar Joshi, Savita Prabhune, Satish Pulekar, Seema Deshmukh, Bharat Ganeshpure and others. Among them, Bharat Ganeshpure through his limited role of a Police Officer offers some humour. Kadambari Kadam is seen after a long time in guest appearance.

All in all, ‘TMM – Tujha Tu Majha Mi’ offers light entertainment and is targeted at youngsters. The film does send across a message for youngsters, i.e. to understand the value of marriage. However, it could have been still better, if it was presented with convincing theme.

To keep the audience engaged throughout the film, should be the sole motive of an entertaining film. Especially, when the theme of the film is based on comedy, there are big expectations from the director of the film. Paresh Mokashi, who directed the films like ‘Harishchandrachi Factory‘ and ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi‘ has now presented his latest film ‘Chi Va Chi Sau Ka‘, raising expectations from the Marathi film audience. But, the film has turned out to be a casual entertainer.

Lalit Prabhakar and Mrinmayee Godbole Marathi movie 'Chi Va Chi Sau Ka'
Lalit Prabhakar and Mrinmayee Godbole, Marathi movie ‘Chi Va Chi Sau Ka

The film presents the story of two youngsters Savitri( Mrinmayee Godbole) and Satya ( Lalit Prabhakar), who are from different fields. While Satya is an Electronics engineer, who is very much concerned about water conservation, Savitri is a Veterinary doctor, who is very much against anyone harming an insect or an animal. Both of them are brought together by their respective family members, with an arranged marriage. But, Savitri, in spite of knowing Satya through her friend, puts a condition that she would marry Satya, provided she is given a chance live with him on a trial basis for few days, to understand him.
In spite of opposition from parents , Satya accepts this condition and both of them live together in a room, only to create misunderstandings among family members from both the sides. There are fights between them. Then, we also notice Savitri fighting like a kid with her elder sister who is pregnant and younger school going brother. Most of the time in this film has been wasted in unnecessary quarrels between different characters, who sound loud.

Actually, what the film maker wanted to show, he could not present in two hours and thirteen minutes, due to poor screenplay and limited content. Initially, through another couple separating after their court marriage, he clearly hinted that all love marriages are not successful, showing the instant break up of a young couple, who could not stay without each other’s company earlier.

However, in the case of Satya and Savitri, he has tried to show that ‘Live in relationship‘ is the only way to understand each other, no matter how much time it takes? Today, in the name of comedy and entertainment, anything is being offered and some our Bollywood films are the best example. This film has tried nothing different from such films. Now, how the audience would accept this idea, remains a big question.

Performances from the artistes are just fine, but all of them are too loud and quarrelling with each other most of the time, which has taken away the interest from the subject of ‘Chi Va Chi Sau Ka‘ film. Music composed by Narendra Bhide is just fine, but the sound recording and the fine photography by Sudhir Palsane, have turned out to be the plus points of  ‘Chi Va Chi Sau Ka‘ film.

‘Nagpur Adhiveshan’ presents routine political satire

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Films on the backdrop of political situation in Maharashtra, are not new to Marathi film lovers. In the past, films like ‘Samna‘, ‘Sarkarnama‘, ‘Made In China‘ invited attention of many film lovers, for presenting the political situation especially in Maharashtra very realistically. However, in the recent past, none of the film makers could present their films on this subject effectively, so as to hold the film goers to their seats from start to finish. Some film makers did attempt political satire, to entertain the audience.

Latest released Marathi film ‘Nagpur Adhiveshan- Ek Sahal‘ also presents a light comedy, on the backdrop of Winter session of Maharashtra legislature, held every year in the orange city. Produced by Anil Keshavrao Jalamkar and directed by Nilesh Raosaheb Jalamkar this film presents the effect of this session on the officials of State Government department housed there. The film focuses on all such employees busy in meeting the demands of the visiting elected representatives, through corrupt practices. Through different characters, the film tries to show the attitude of each one of them, engaged in ‘give and take’ business.

Ajinkya Deo in Marathi film Nagpur Adhiveshan
Ajinkya Deo in Marathi film ‘Nagpur Adhiveshan Ek Sahal’

The film begins with a leader of the opposition Prataprao ( Ajinkya Deo) planning a cycle march from his village to Nagpur,to show his strength to gain political mileage; but faces opposition from a young protagonist Aju ( Amol Tale) from his village. Somehow, he manages to convince him to accompany him along with his followers. However, on reaching Nagpur, Prataprao plays his political game with the help of his local Political worker Waghmare ( Bharat Ganeshpure ) based in Nagpur , who seeks help of a clerk from Government office Mr. Solanke ( Makarand Anaspure ) and his team.

The film does not pass any strong social message, but has tried to show the excitement amongst the leaders attending the sessions , who are in a picnic mood instead of discussing the problems faced by the people. All these events have been picturised to generate some humour. However, the film’s screenplay fails to pick up till interval. Even after interval, there are not many interesting happenings, giving it a look of a routine political satire. It is only towards the climax, the screenplay presents some hilarious moments. The intention of writer-director has been good while presenting this subject, but he has not been able to make it gripping. In an attempt to offer scope to every important actor in this film, he has lost the track.

In the beginning of the film, you are under the impression that Ajinkya Deo is the hero of this film. Then, the focus is shifted on Amol Tale and soon you find Makarand Anaspure and Bharat Ganeshpure getting the attention. But, there is also time given to young Sankarshan Karhade, who finds his space to romance with Sneha Chavan. Then, there are other artistes like Mohan Joshi, Chetan Dalvi, Satish Phadke, Deepali Jagtap and Vinit Bhonde , who find their share as supporting artistes. All of them have given good performances, with Mohan Joshi attempting something different. The film’s music is not very impressive, as there are two conventional style songs, but the film’s cinematography is good, capturing some outdoor locations of Nagpur skillfully.

All in all, ‘Nagpur Adhiveshan Ek Sahal‘ presents a routine political satire and is a timely release as the winter session of State legislature is going on in Nagpur.

‘Jalsa’ offers an average comedy

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Now days, we find many new directors attempting to offer something to Marathi cinema, in the name of comedy. However, in the new film ‘Jalsa’ we find the director Ashutosh S Raaj playing multiple roles as a film maker, an actor and also a writer, to offer this so called traditional comedy through his film.

Actually, ‘Jalsa‘ is the story of two youngsters Amar Patil ( Ashutosh S Raaj) and Prem Patil ( Nikhil Wairagkar) who are passionate about directing a film. Amar who is from a well to do family, becomes so desperate that he borrows money from people in their neighborhood and when he cannot repay the same, his father ( Mohan Joshi) drives him out of his house. Amar along with Prem then finds shelter in the house of his maternal uncle Bhaiyyasaheb ( Bharat Ganeshpure) in a village , where both of them find an opportunity to stage a play based on the old classic drama ‘Ekach Pyala with local artistes, their two girlfriends ( Girija Joshi & Shital Ahirrao) and their Uncle, who is also an actor expert in performing the female roles .

Bharat Ganeshpure, 'Jalsa' Moviestill
Bharat Ganeshpure, ‘Jalsa’ Moviestill

The film’s screenplay literally drags in the first half, with most of the time wasted in showing all the important male characters consuming hard drinks and uttering all the non sense, by taking the audience for granted. Especially, the character played by Arun Kadam is shown drinking almost in all the long scenes to his share. The characters played by Sagar Karande, Abhijeet Chavan, Mohan Joshi have been wasted in this film. More scope has been given to TV comedian Bharat Ganeshpure, but his character hasn’t been developed properly, in the company of too many artistes, including the two youngsters played by director Ashutosh S Raaj himself , Nilhil Wairagkar, their two girlfriends Girija and Shital with their love stories etc. The much talked about ‘Bai Vadyavar‘ song picturised on Manasi Naik has turned out to be the title song of the film shown at the beginning part of this film.

The director has been able to present only the last 15- 20 minutes of the film with some real comedy drama. Otherwise, the rest of the film fails to appeal, for presenting not so interesting plot and a poor screenplay. The film ‘Jalsa‘ may appeal only to some of the village folks, who are fond of local based entertaining plays. But, for real sensible Marathi film lovers, this film is a big disappointment. However, good art design by Vaibhav Shirolar and sound design by Manoj Mochemadkar and Sandeep Madkholkar are the only technical plus points of the film. Music by Samir Saptiskar for the two songs in this film is just fine. In short, ‘Jalsa‘ offers just an average comedy.

Bharat Ganeshpure
Actor Bharat Ganeshpure
