It will be a triangular contest coming Friday
Chaitanya Tamhane’s film ‘Court’ has won 17 awards at the various international film festivals. Recently, it added one more feather in its cap, by bagging the national award. The past experience of such award winning films, clearly indicates that such films never draw crowds at theaters. Therefore, it remains to be seen, whether ‘Court’ succeeds in drawing good crowds at theaters.
But, along with ‘Court’ , two more Marathi films are also releasing coming Friday. They are ‘Te Don Diwas’ directed by Devendra Dodke and ‘What About Savarkar’ directed by Rupesh Katare & Nitin Gawde. Incidentally, all these three films are based on social issues, with a social message. While, ‘Te Don Diwas’ has well known veteran artistes like Mohan Joshi, Alka Kubal Athalye, Arun Nalawade & Dr. Vila Ujavane, ‘What About Savarkar’ has well known stage artistes like Sharad Ponkshe, Avinash Narkar, Atul Todankar and Shrikant Bhide. In comparison ‘Court’ has a big team of newcomers, with just two stage artistes. But, it has awards in its bag.
So, it will be a triangular contest coming Friday, with the audience to decide, what will be their choice. So, over to 17th April.
‘Court’ to be released throughout India
Winning awards at film festivals, does not necessarily guarantee a film commercial success at box office. Such films, which catch fancy of section of audience and jury, are also required to reach out to the maximum number of people, to create awareness. Promotion of movie has become an order of the day, through which the film maker expects the viewers to watch his film in theatres.
The makers of soon to be released a National Award winning film ‘Court’, which is produced under the banner Zoo Entertainment by Vivek Gomber, is well aware of compulsions of promotions. When ‘Court’ was conceived by writer, director Chaitanya Tamhane, he did not get an instant go ahead by the producer, who in turn wanted some time to ponder over the project. If not meagre profits, but at least a break even was expected from this first time film project. But after a nod from Mr Gomber, Mr Tamhane kept no stone unturned, to make this movie realistically interesting, and all the awards speak for the film.
Now, the makers of ‘Court’ are busy in promoting this multi-award winning film. They feel that the awareness about this national award winning film, should be spread many fold. So they have requested all the people, who featured in the film, numbering around hundred, to promote the film through their personal contacts in social media. This emotional appeal was met with innocent enthusiasm shown by the entire group of first-time ‘actors’. Incidentally, this very cast got a special mention from the jury of MAMI, as Best Ensemble of Cast in a Film.
National award winning film ‘Court’, which can boast of 18 more awards at various film festivals and expected to increase the tally because it has still 20 odd invitations from other international film festivals, is the first Marathi film to be released nationwide, simultaneously on 17th April 2015.
‘Court’ brings pride to Marathi film industry
Marathi film maker Chaitanya Tamhane is the happiest person in the world. After bagging 17 awards at various international film festivals, his Film ‘Court’ has now been declared as the best film at the national award. So, the Golden Lotus award has been won by a Marathi film once again, bringing pride to Marathi film industry.
Ravi Jadhav’s short film ‘Mitra’ has also bagged the Best Short film award among the National awards won by other Marathi films like ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’, bagging the best children’s film award and Bhausaheb Karhade’s film ‘Khwada’ bagging two technical awards in Special Jury & Best audiography respectively.

New Marathi film Court’s first look revealed
We always have an impression about ‘Court’ of justice in India, as we have witnessed all those court scenes in films. In fact, we believe that in all courts there’s typical cross examination as depicted in films. But, in reality the scene in courts, especially lower courts, are contrary to the above notion. The shabby rooms with poor lighting, scattered files with yellowish papers wrapped in red ribbons, might be the outlook and atmosphere.
An upcoming marathi film ‘Court’ produced under the banner Zoo films by producer Vivek Gomber, released its first look recently. This film has been talk of the town at international film festival circuit and has bagged 17 awards so far and still more are expected to add to the tally. Court is the first film in India to have won so many awards , on director’s debut. It’s a record.
The event began with the screening of ‘awards’ the film received and then the trailer was revealed. Writer-Director Chaitanya Tamhane said ‘There are no ‘stars’ in the film. Almost 70 % of the performers are non-actors, who have never acted before. Others are new to cinema medium. Producer and director, are both debuting with this film. Looking at these factors, we were discouraged by many, to make this film and the finance we were expecting never came. But we were determined and went ahead. And frankly it’s like a lottery that we received through these many awards’.
Vivek Gomber, producer, said that as he had done a play with Chaiyanya, he was confident of his talent and went ahead to produce this film alone, due to conviction. Veera Sathidar who plays revolutionary folk singer spoke passionately about the director and opined that he had the idea that this film was going to be something special. Geetanjali Kulkarni, who also compared the event and plays an important role in the movie, thanked her NSD training and theatre experience, which had helped her, during the making. Sambhaji Bhagat, music composer, stated in a recorded message that this was a Common man’s film and will be liked by all.
‘Court’ will release on 17th April 2015
