While ‘Fandry’ received separate nominations in the best editing, best cinematography, best child actor, best supporting actor, besides the three nominations mentioned above, ‘Duniyadari’ has received nominations in 11 categories separately, other than the three mentioned above.

Surprisingly, ‘Time Pass’ which was hit film of the recent past, after ‘Duniyadari’ hasn’t received many nominations, compared to these two films, except for the three nominations received in Best Singer ( male), Best music and best dialogues. However, there are surprise inclusion of films like ‘Avtarachi Goshta’, ‘Rege’, and ‘Astu’ in the best film category, to compete with ‘Duniyadari’ and ‘Fandry’. Incidentally, ‘Rege’, ‘Astu’ and ‘Avatarachi Goshta’ have also found nominations in few other categories too.

Sushant Shelar

“My struggle is still going on” – Sushant Shelar

Sushant Shelar has been in the field of acting, since his school days. So, among the youngsters of today’s Marathi entertainment industry, he has acquired considerable experience, for the past twenty years. He did his first commercial play in 1992, when he was in 7th standard. The very next year, he made his debut as a child artiste in a film and a TV serial ‘Mayur Pankh’ .

Till now, Sushant has won best supporting actor award for his film ‘Picnic’. Marathi Movie world spoke to this talented actor. Excerpts from an interview.
Q: We understand that you have gone through a lot of struggle in your field. Any memories of the past happenings?
A: Actually, I enjoyed that period. Surviving the days on Vada Paav …. even today, when I recollect this period ,I feel happy. And, I am sure, many like me, have gone through this stage.Sushant Shelar
Q: Watching you perform variety of roles today, in films; don’t you feel that in spite of possessing talent, it took a long time for you to establish yourself? A: There is nothing like that. Actually, even today, my struggle in going on.

Q: According to you, what is the reason for success of ‘Duniyadari’ ?
A: First of all, I would like to mention about the writer of the novel Suhas Shirwalkar. Thereafter, the credit goes to the team of ‘Duniyadari’ . During the making of this film, there was an inner feeling amongst all of us that this film would become super hit.

Q:Now, you are also there in late Rajiv Patil’s forthcoming film ‘Vanshavel’. What’s your reaction?
A: Rajiv was a very good friend. I had earlier worked with him for the film ‘Blind Game’. I feel that I was fortunate to get another chance to work with a director like him. I am sure, ‘Vanshavel’ would also attain grand success.

Q: Can you please tell us something about this film.
A: Today, we are missing the joint family system. Therefore, those who have separated from the Joint family, if they go and watch this film, they will certainly be inspired to join back with their original joint family system. So much will be the impact of this film. The tagline of the film speaks everything. i.e. ‘If the family survives, the nation will survive.’

Q: And, what about your role ?
A: I am playing an important main character of a Doctor, who is very much influenced by his father, who takes all the decisions in the family. But, one day, when his own wife deserts him, he suffers. When a woman walks out of the life of a man, the vacuum created thereafter in his life, is all that this film talks about.

Q. Recently, you were also seen on stage. Why did you stop doing theatre?
A: I have not stopped. Actually, I am planning to perform in a new play. But, recently, due to preparations for MICTA,I could not find time and hence it is postponed. With my association with Maharashtra Kalanidhhi I was totally occupied with the event along with Mahesh Manjrekar. Even otherwise, I am associated with Natya Parishad activities as their active member.

Q: Do you consider anyone as your idol in this acting field ?
A: There is no one in particular. I like to learn from all of them. Because, there is something to learn from each one of the, But, my favourite actor is Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.

Q: What do you think about the taste of today’s audience?
A: Today, people like to have a complete package, which was offered by ‘Duniyadari’. There was a love story, action, drama and good music; offering total entertainment. In Marathi films, people also need a good story. Therefore, a film like ‘Grand Masti’ will never work in Marathi.

‘Duniyadari’ scores over bollywood films

Duniyadari Movie

The magic of ‘Duniyadari’ seems to have worked on audience; as this multi-starrer Marathi film has pulled full house in Mumbai. At PVR Goregaon, Oberoi Mall, Saturday 4.30 pm show was house full, with Sunday show also showing full house. Many people who had come to see this film at the theatre had to return home disappointed.

In comparison, the two Hindi films ‘D-day’ and ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ released along with ‘Duniyadari’ were waiting for the audience to turn up for their shows in multiplexes. Isn’t that a clear indication that there is audience for Marathi cinema, provided the selection of artistes is perfect and the film maker understanding what the Marathi audience is looking for. Sanjay Jadhav must be the happiest person today, getting his birthday gift, two days later.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

The most valuable gift you can possess is a honest friend. Many a times, some people come into our lives and quickly go; but, some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts. Ace Cinematographer turned director Sanjay Jadhav’s latest film ‘Duniyadari’ presents a plot based on such theme, which is inspired from best seller ‘Duniyadari’ by eminent writer Late Shri Suhas Shirwalkar Though primarily set on the backdrop of 1970’s, the happenings in this romantic emotion filled love story, still relates to the youth of today, as screenplay writer Chinmay Mandlekar has made few changes to suit the cinematic form.

So, we find Shreyas Talwalkar (Swapnil Joshi) a young boy in his 20s from Mumbai, caught up in a bad father and mother (Uday Tikekar- Varsha Usgaonkar) relationship. After scoring poor passing marks in graduation, he is sent by his mother to Pune’s S. P. College for his post graduation. He finds his accommodation in college hostel and encounters notorious Digya alias DSP (Ankush Choudhary) and his Katta Gang comprising of Ashkya, Nitys, Sorry, Sunil and Umya, a bunch of hooligans. Digya is in relationship with his long time neighbourhood friend Surekha (Richa Pariyali), who is also part of the gang.

The katta gang members add vibrant colours to the otherwise disturbed life of Shreyas ,who is from a rich family , but deprived of love and friendship. The gang come across a brother and sister duo of Pritam and Shirin (Sushant Shelar and Sai Tamhankar), who are children of a renowned MLA. Pritam who is also student of Post graduate studies, becomes friendly with Shreyas and his other friends, while Shirin who is a medical student, is a frequent visitor to their college. It is actually love at first sight for Shireen, when she first meets Shreyas. The friendship grows. But, in between Digya and his friends suggest Shreyas to become friendly with Police Inspector’s daughter Meenakshi alias Meenu ( Urmila kanitkar Kothare) taking it as a challenge to teach a lesson to her adamant father.

Duniyadari Review

The assembly of these characters is enough for the film to progress with its screenplay with sequence of scenes between Meenu and Shreyas, Shireen and Shreyas, Digya and Sainath alias Sai( Jitendra Joshi) – from a rival gang and local politician’s son. Jealous about the growing friendship between Digya and Shreyas, Akshya breaks away from the group and joins Sai’s group. We also find Sai playing his clever game, proposing Shirin through his political connections. Watching Shreyas coming closer to Meenu, Shirin accepts Sai’s proposal. But, she still tries to be a good friend of Shreyas. Also, with the help of her brother, she brings Meenu closer to Shreyas. Now, in a dilemma, Shreyas declares his love for Meenu , in presence of Shireen; but is not happy. Even Digya finds his beloved getting married to a stranger, at the behest of her parents, who don’t approve Digya.

Many events unfold thereafter, through frequent flashbacks; as the entire story is shown in a series of flashbacks, which is a new style adopted by the director. You also find its link to the story of Shreyas’ mother, who reveals the truth to Shreyas , after his father’s untimely death. It is after that you find a sudden change in attitude of Shreyas, who moves ahead with his changed plan, to take you through a filmy climax .

Director Sanjay Jadhav seems to have paid more attention on presentation of every character from his film, with lot of perfection on their costumes and styles suited to the period of 70s. Watch the bell bottoms of boys, long side locks of Ajinkya, long hair style of Jitendra and costumes of all characters. They are all perfectly styled. What looks unrealistic is the climax, which goes on the lines of Bollywood films of 70s and 80s. Smoking cigarettes by the characters including Shireen-a medical student, has been shown more than required. Her regular visits to S. P. College and that too once in their library looks unnatural. Not much attention has been paid on the make up of the artistes in the older look, except for their grey hair. Even the names of the katta members engraved on the katta, are noticed during the reunion after almost 40-50 years, which is something strange.

But, the fine performances by all the artistes in the film make you overlook these minor errors. ‘Duniyadari’ is a film that mainly revolves around two main characters, Shreyas and Shireen, which is in narrative form from Shireen’s point of view. In the character of Shireen, Sai Tamhankar has found an important role to display her real acting skills. Till now, she was being used more as a glamour girl. Swapnil, was expected to deliver his best and he has played his role with total commitment to his character. His total involvement in the character, can be clearly noticed in this film.

In the role of Digya, Ankush Chaudhary is a perfect choice. He impresses with his tall angry young man looks and actions. Jitendra Joshi presents a rowdy young villain in style, paying more attention on his attire and dialogue delivery. Though Urmila kanitkar kothare finds a limited role, she plays an important character in the film, displaying her emotions clearly. Even Richa Pariyali in her limited role, finds an opportunity in one particular scene, to display her emotions. Sushant Shelar’s Pritam is convincing and so is Ajainkya Joshi’s Ashkya.

In this film, Sandeep Kulkarni surprises with his special appearance. He hardly has 2- 3 scenes; but he creates an impact through them. In the supporting cast, Varsha Usgaonkar, Uday Tikekar and others offer good backing. Music by Sameer Satoskar, Pankaj and Amit Raj is good for a change. Director Sanjay Jadhav has paid complete attention on direction, as he has handed over the responsibility of cinematography to Prasad Bhende in this film, who has done a good job. No wonder, there is sincere effort put in by entire team in presenting this strong script backed film.

Ashutosh Kulkarni

“Satish Rajwade is like a school of acting” – Ashutosh Kulkarni

A graduate in Social Sciences and Sociology from Pune’s Fergusson College, Ashutosh Kulkarni came to Mumbai only to become an actor. Before that he was active with Pune’s experimental theatre and also performed at the State level competitions. When he first came to this tinsel town, he started taking keen interest on other aspects of stage, i.e lighting technical matters and even direction. He even worked as assistant director to Cinematographer- director Sanjay Jadhav, for the film ‘Checkmate‘ to get the feel of camera and floor movements. ‘Goshta Eka Lagnachi’, ‘Duniyadari‘ and ‘Peshwai‘ were some of the shows through which he got exposure and then through Zee Marathi’s TV serial ‘Asambhav’, he received special attention. Ashutosh learnt his real acting lessons from Satish Rajwade, who was the director of ‘Asambhav’.

Ashutosh Kulkarni
“Satish Rajwade is like a school of acting and there is a lot to learn from him, while he directs you,” says Ashutosh, while recollecting some of the special moments he shared in his company. He also does not forget to mention about Shrirang Godbole and Smita Talwalkar, because of whom he got his timely break on television. While working in Marathi, Ashutosh also had an opportunity to be part of a Hindi TV show ‘Bure Bhi Hum Bhale Bhi Hum’. “It was a good experience to work in Hindi,” he says.

There is not a single opportunity he has missed, when it was time for anchoring any programme or show.

“I enjoy playing that role as I feel very comfortable as an anchor,” he says with a smile. As regards his entry into films, soon, you will see him in a new Marathi film ‘Koni Mulgi Deta Ka Mulgi’, directed by Ashok Karlekar.” Having focused himself totally into this profession, he too has his own ambition of setting up his own production house one day. Whatever this young actor does, it is with full conviction. “I don’t do anything halfway and then leave it. If I take up any work, I try to complete it first, before jumping at other. It was for this reason, while I was preparing for my exams, there were no acting commitments. During that period, I was totally engrossed with my studies.” he says.

In the recent past, we have seen Ashutosh confidently performing every character, whether it was a supportive boy friend in ‘Kasturi‘ opposite Sai Ranade Sane, an ambitious and understanding friend in ‘Anubandh‘ opposite Saie Tamhankar, or as Ajay Raje Shankarshet in Star Pravah’s ‘Goshta Eka Lagnachi’ opposite Urmila Kanetkar; he has always been at ease, doing such roles. His serial ‘Lek Ladaki Hya Gharchi’ is also doing well on E-TV.

Ashutosh is now playing a more challenging lead role in the character of Vikram opposite another talented actress Rujuta Deshmukh in Mi Marathi’s popular ongoing serial ‘Tu Bhetashi Navyane’. In this serial he is in the company of versatile senior actors like Vikram Gokhale, Madhu Kambikar, Pradeep Velankar and now Sharad Ponkshe; who has also been added to the caste. “I enjoy every moment while shooting for this serial. Right from the producer, director, co-artistes to technicians; they are truly professional,” he compliments.

Observing him perform confidently and with ease in the company of big artistes, it becomes clear that he is ‘an actor to watch’ in the coming years. Being very polite, friendly with all approach and considering himself still in the learning process, are some of his good qualities that will take him to greater heights in the long run.
