Detective stories are not new to Hindi Films or television. Even in Marathi few years ago, we saw a film like ‘Pune 52‘, which was based on a detective.  Latest released Marathi film ‘Faster Fene‘ inspired by Late B.R.Bhagwat’s  short stories and developed by Kshitij Patwardhan and directed by Aditya Sarpotdar is a detective story with a difference. It literally takes the audience on a fast track, while uncovering a biggest education scam.

Girish Kulkarni in Marathi movie 'Faster Fene' Still
Actor Girish Kulkarni in Marathi movie ‘Faster Fene‘ Still

In this film Banesh  Fene( Amey Wagh) a youngster who comes to Pune to appear for Medical Entrance Exam, takes halt at Old Writer Bhagwat ‘s ( Dilip Prabhavalkar) house known to his family and is required  to extend his stay there to detect a biggest education scam. Actually, at the  exam centre Fene comes across another student Dhanesh Lanjekar , who seems to be all prepared for the exams. But, next day, when Fene is about to leave for his home town, he reads a newspaper story about the sad news of Dhanesh committing suicide. Out of curiosity,  he decides to stay back and with his hobby of detecting the strange happenings, starts investigating the cause of Dhanesh’s death.

In his endeavor he finds support from his childhood friend turned trainee journalist Aboli( Parna Pethe), an auto rickshaw driver Ambadas ( Siddharth Jadhav )  and a street child Bhu Bhu ( Shubham More )who is  offered shelter by Mr. Bhagwat. There are many interesting happenings in this film, while Fene encounters the most dangerous middle man involved in the biggest education scam Appa ( Girish Kulkarni ) . Screenplay and dialogue writer Kshitij Patweardhan and director Aditya Sarpotdar have very cleverly succeeded in uncovering the scam with the help of their main character of Fene. What is more appreciating is the subject dealt in this film, which is very timely.

There is no doubt that Amey Wagh who has all round experience of stage, television and films has given his best in the lead role, but Girish Kulkarni as a villain in this film is highly impressive. But, his role has been extended more than required  in the second half of the film, especially in the scene while travelling in a PMT bus. Good support comes from artistes Dilip Prabhavalkar, Siddharth Jadhav, Parna Pethe, Shubham More, Shrikant Yadav and others.  This film does not have a single song, but the background music by Troy Arif is remarkable  and so is the sound design by Pramod Chandorkar and Pranay Pansare. Art Director Nikhil Kovale and photographer Milind Jog have also helped to make this film more presentable. Certainly a worth watch film. Don’t miss it.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

The foundation of a good Marathi film is in its story. Latest released Marathi film ‘Salaam’ offers one such unique story on the backdrop of a village off Pune, which is known for families of brave soldiers and policemen. The story of ‘Salaam’ revolves around two such families; i.e. of a soldier in Indian army deputed at the border and a Policeman with Maharashtra Police, posted in Mumbai.

‘Salaam’ has a sensible story, mixed with emotions; but supported by light humour filled into the screenplay. The film makes its intention very clear from the very first scene, very intelligently shot, while the credits of the film appear on one side. With light sound effect played in the backdrop, the film suggests its class. ‘Salaam’ is actually a festival kind of film, which has been released first and then intend to participate in various film festivals. Director Kiran Yadnyopavit has selected wonderful locations for this film, to give a realistic feeling to the audience.
Vivek Chabukswar Girish Kulkarni

More than the story of the Policeman (Girish Kulkarni) serving for Maharashtra Police and posted in Mumbai and an Army Soldier (Sanjay Khapre) posted at the border; it is the story of their families and in particular their two children Raghu (Vivek Chabukswar) son of a Policeman and Sada ( Abhishek Bharate) son of an Army Soldier The film goes on to narrate the story of these two children, who are good friends. But, goes on to show, how they develop differences, while making collections for charity purpose, considering it as a competition, to win a medal for maximum collections.

Very cleverly, the director takes the audience into their typical village lifestyle, to show their playful days and how they face the grave situation. ‘Salaam’ is a simple story which is very effectively passed on to the audience, through its well presented screenplay. Every situation in the film, has a message to convey; be it the doubt in the mind of Raghu, as to who is superior? A Policeman or an Army soldier? Then, the break up of friendship between the two little friends, doubting each other’s integrity over collection of funds for charity and finally, the realisation of friendship, by Raghu; in the concluding scene . All these incidences have been very cleverly sequenced in the film.

Director Kiran Yadnyopavit has rightly used Albert Einstein’s quote before the start of the film ” If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” And, he has succeeded in conveying the actual meaning, through this film. At the end of the film, he goes on to remind you of Helen Keller’s quote, ” All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.” Though, he hasn’t displayed the same on screen.

Kishore Kadam Mandar Deodhar

Best thing about this film is the coming together of three people, who have won national awards. Girish Kulkarni, who plays a Policeman is at his best, offering his natural skills; though he doesn’t have much scope for acting. But, Vivek Chabukswar has tried to do better, expressing his emotions well, through many important scenes in this film. He has turned out to be the real hero of this film. The third national award winner behind the screen, is a techie – Sound designer and mixing Engineer Anmol Bhave, who has also done a commendable job; which is clearly noticed in many outdoor scenes.

Among the other performers, Aatisha Naik as Raghu’s mother has played a totally different role of a kind hearted wife and mother in this film. Jyoti Chandekar as the grandmother, is impressive. Sanjay Khapre has played his limited role, with ease. Kishore Kadam as the head of the village school has done a good job, while Shashank Shende, Suhas Shirsat, Praveen Tarde, Siddheshwar Zadbuke, Savita Prabhune ( from Baramati) and the other six children have supported very well.

The film has only two songs; but the background music offered by Rahul Ranade is very apt for this type of film. All in all, ‘Salaam’ is a sensible film, and is a tribute to the families of those brave soldiers and policemen; who are used to face grave situations in their life and to overcome them.

Devious ‘Pune52′ is a path breaking Marathi film

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created his fictional detective in the form of Sherlock Holmes. Now, Australia returned film maker Nikhil Mahajan has dared to create his Amar Apte as private detective in latest Marathi film ‘Pune 52’ in his own style. Moreover, as claimed in the credits, that the film is based on a true story, this film is expected to draw attention.
Set on the backdrop of early 90s, it is the story of a private detective Amar Apte (Girish Kulkarni) from Pune, who operates from his old house, in an adjacent room with a separate entrance. Amar sneaks into the personal lives of others, especially those adulterous wives, as part of his assignment. During one such assignment, he clicks a builder (Kiran Karmarkar)in his private acts ; who sends police to his house to recover the amount from his wife, for interfering into his personal life.

Girish Kulkarni,
In comes, Neha, who introduces herself as the same Builder’s wife and hires Amar on an assignment. She even pays him advance. However, Amar, who is disturbed by his demanding wife Prachi (Sonali Kulkarni Sr.) gets trapped into Neha’s seductive nature. This has given ample scope to the film maker to show some hot intimate scenes between Amar and Neha. But, for filming these intimate scenes between Girish Kulkarni and Sai Tamhankar , the film has received ‘A’ certification. Obviously, this has invited the attention of Marathi audience; since not many youngsters below 18, are otherwise keen on watching Marathi films. Not a bad idea!
The pre- interval session of the film is bit slow, as the plot of the film doesn’t become clear till interval. It is only in post –interval stage , the film generates interest among the audience. It is a sincere effort by the director to incorporate twists and turns; which only the true film lovers are able to understand. Other wise, watching this film in a theatre, would also invite lewd remarks from a section of audience, on certain scenes; as witnessed by this critic in Movie Time- Hub, on the first day. The film is technically well made, with perfect sound effects & suitable background music by Atif Afzal. Wonderful cinematography by Jeremy Reagen from New Zealand, makes this film more appealing. Watch some of the scenes shot in dark and those in close up. It’s a remarkable work.
Girish Kulkarni finds a totally different kind of role through this film and he has given justice to his charater. Sonali Kulkarni finds a suitable role of his wife, who has cleverly shown quick change of behaviour in her character, as per the requirement of the script. Sai Tamhankar is at her best. She perfectly fits into the role of Neha. It was nice to see Kiran Karmarkar playing that intricate character of a builder, with ease. Bharati Achrekar plays a convincing mother in law of Amar Apte. Though there is a mention about Amar’s father-in-law, his appearance has been cleverly avoided.
To say something about the complex screenplay, few sluggish scenes should have been edited to make the film more interesting in the first part of the film. Otherwise, the film has turned out to be a devious path breaking film in Marathi. The English sub titles are expected to turn in favour of the film.

Impressive ‘Deool’ ends without suitable climax

Director: Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni
Screenplay, Dialogues: Girish Kulkarni
Music: Mangesh Dhakade
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire, Sudhir Moghe
Cast: Dilip Prabhavalkar, Nana Patekar, Girish Kulkarni, Mohan Agashe, Atisha Naik, Sonali Kulkarni, Kishor Kadam, Jyoti Subhash, Hrishikesh Joshi, Vibhavari Deshpande
Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

After two sensible films ‘Valu’ and ‘Vihir’, the team of Umesh Kulkarni and Girish Kulkarni unite once again with their artistic work, through their latest released film ‘Deool’.

Besides perfect presentation of a village life supported by superb portrayal of characters by versatile artistes,’Deool’ successfully manages to depict the image of today’s rural India and the effect of globalisation on the lives of the people living there.

The film revolves around one such village Umbra in Maharashtra, which is otherwise peaceful and slow moving in progress, having been exploited by a local politician Bhau ( Nana Patekar), who is a tool at the hands of his party chief ( Mohan Agashe). Bhau cleverly manages the people from the village, including the lady Sarpanch (Atisha Naik) and proves how liberal he is, in treating the women folks. He also keeps his wife (Sonali Kulkarni) happy but sends his two daughters to Boarding school to keep them away from village life.
Bhau, respects the only educated and sensible senior citizen Anna( Dilip Prabhavalkar) , who lives all alone with his son and his family living in Bangaluru. When Anna comes up with a hospital project for the benefit of villagers, Bhau supports his idea and agrees to find finance through his party chief. In the meanwhile, a young labourer Keshav, working at Bhau’s house sees Lord Dattaguru in his dreams, while he takes a nap in the deserted place below a tree, after searching for his missing cow. When he wakes up, he is all excited and starts disclosing this miracle to whoever he comes across, on his way back home.

When Keshav narrates this incidence to Anna, he advises him not to disclose it to anyone and suggests him to keep his faith to his own self. But, the news spreads to the village and a Journalist who is a friend of the youths from the village including the nephew of Bhau, suggests them to sensationalize this matter. He convinces Bhau’s nephew and other friends the importance of this news and suggests them to turn this villlgae into a pilgrim centre. Bhau’s nephew goes one step ahead of his uncle and takes the Party chief into confidence. Bhau has no other way left but to take alongwith him the youth of the village and succumb to their demands. Fed up with this politics Anna decides to leave the village and moves to Bangaluru to join his son. Even Keshav desists himself from the materialistic living of the villagers, especially after the death of his cow.
The excellent realistic presentation of the film in the first half, manages to keep the audience engrossed into their daily life; but after interval slows down a bit with irrelevant scenes. It picks up after those breaks, only to conclude with unexpected climax, which is open ended for the audience to decide.

Nana Patekar

The most sensible person in this film- Anna deciding to quit the village, itself shows the helplessness of sensible people living in this country. The film had ample scope to show that there is law which does not spare those into corrupt practices, as suggested by the character of Anna to Bhau, in one of the scenes; but that does not happen in this film’s climax. There was also scope to show the villagers realising how important it was to have a Hospital project for their village, rather than playing with the sentiments of the devotees. But, that too does not happen in the climax.

The only young man Keshav does his best in his own way, but his efforts don’t bring the desired results. The film therefore does not succeed totally in removing blind faith, but only keeps the reality before the audience. There is no doubt that the selection of artistes for the respective characters is a perfect choice and so are the well written dialogues. Wonderful photography, perfect editing and best sound effect makes this film more presentable technically . Music by Magesh Dhakade is just appropriate for this film.

Direction of Umesh Kulkarni clearly shows, how perfect he has been with his study of village life. There has been lot of hard work during the film’s making, managing such a big team of talented artistes. Lead actor -Nana Patekar rocks in the role of Bhau; but it is Girish Kulkarni, who in the role of Keshav is more impressive. With excellent support coming from a big team of artistes, the film is more like a performance oriented film. Watch the expressions of Mohan Agashe, playing a shrewd politician, watch the body language of Usha Nadkarni, simple but perfect housewife played by Sonali Kulkarni and that guest apperance by Naseeruddin Shah, as a stranger coming to the village; they all are extraordinary!
