Jitendra Joshi – An Electrician turned Actor
Jitendra has already made his presence felt through his roles in recent films like ‘Guldasta’, ‘Shala’ and ‘Zhakaas’. Now, his two forthcoming films, namely ‘Matter’ and ‘Tukaram’ are all set for release shortly. He is also working in few more film projects. Marathi Movie World spoke to this multi talented personality. Excerpts from an interview:
Q: How was life, prior to entering this acting field ?
A: Prior to acting, as a youngster I have done lots of hard work expected from any active young boy; like distributing the newspapers and working in a shop. Basically, I am an electrician and during my young days used to run the shop of my uncle.
Q: When exactly you felt that you could become an actor ?
A: One day, while I was in my Uncle’s shop, my teacher Mr. Pardeshi spotted me there. He suggested me that I was at a wrong place. He indicated that my place was in theatre, as according to him, I was good at acting. But, that time, I didn’t know what exactly was required to be done, to become an actor. Later, when I shifted to Pune, I watched some one act plays and dramas. Watching the performances of Subodh Bhave and Lokesh Gupte, inspired me. I joined Satish Tare and Sunil Tare’s group as music operator. One day, in absence of one artist , I was asked to play his role. Mr. Mohan Wagh, who saw me in that role, selected me for his play ‘Three Cheers’ and I landed in Mumbai.
Q: But, how did you turn a lyricist ?
A: I don’t exactly remember, when I took interest in writing. May be, after I shifted to Mumbai. It happened, because of the encouragement from my family and friends. I have done very limited writing. Till now, I have written songs for films like ‘Bokya Satbande’ , ‘Jatra’, ‘Virrudh’ ( Hindi) and ‘Striker’ ( Hindi). Even for the film ‘Matter‘, I have penned one song ‘Bada bada bananeka….’ and even rendered my voice to this song in the company of my co artistes Santosh Juvekar, Sushant Shelar and Music director Abhijit Kavthekar.
Q: You are one of the four heroes in the film ‘Matter‘ . Tell us something about this film.
A: About this film, I would only say that we generally see the happenings in the life of the characters. But, what’s life all about and under what circumstances the characters live their life; ‘Matter’ takes a close look at it. It’s a story of four friends and their struggle in life.
Q: What do you have to say about your much talked about film ‘Tukaram‘ ?
A: Now, everyone knows about this famous saint. All I can say is that I am playing this central character in the film.
‘Guldasta’ has light shades of humour

Zee Talkies’ latest Marathi film ‘Guldasta’ has hit the screens all over Maharashtra, on the auspicious Maker Sankranti day. With comedy king Makarand Anaspure in the lead, the film had raised some hopes, since the last three films of Zee Talkies with Makarand had achieved good success. The theme of ‘Guldasta’ revolves around a model Jahnavi Deshmukh (Tejaswini Lonari), the only daughter from a well to do family. Besides being an aspiring model, she is also very keen on making it to Bollywood with a big banner. Her friend from an ad agency Aman Pradhan (Sagar Talashikar) tries to help her out.
In the meanwhile, she comes across two young men, who are childhood friends of each other. A simple living Rajwardhan Chougule alias Raja (Makarand Anaspure) is the owner of a winery, while Jeetu Desai (Jitendra Joshi) is the news reporter of a TV News channel which believes in sensational news. Both of them fall in love with Jahnavi, but try to hide the same from each other. Jeetu develops misunderstanding about his friend Raja, who he thinks has moved very close to Jahnavi. One day, Jahnavi insults Raja and also slaps Jeetu for his misbehavior.
After facing such humiliation, both Raja and Jeetu decide to teach a lesson to Jahnavi, who also has a helper- Madhuri ( Pari Telang) at home, treated like her own sister. Jeetu, seeks help from his colleagues to conduct sting operations to expose Jahnavi. In the meanwhile, Raja plays another game by throwing away money at Aman Pradhan, asking him to make Jahnavi a brand ambassador for his farmhouse. He even manages to come closer to Jahnavi, by gifting her costly items. This is followed by the Media game of Breaking News, which helps Jahnavi to find a role in Bollywood.
Finally, the film concludes at a reality talk show held by the TV channel in an
Amphitheatre. In that last scene, Raja tries to send across a message to the society and the film ends with a happy note. ‘Guldasta’ does not have anything very special like non-stop entertainment, but it certainly offers light shades of humour especially shot on Makarand Anaspure and Jitendra Joshi together, to explore their chemistry. But, how long these Marathi movies are going to depend upon comedy subject, still remains the question? In the role of Jahnavi, Tejaswini Lonari displays a satisfactory performance. There isn’t much scope for music, but Tyagraj Khadilkar’s music isn’t bad. Cinematography by Suresh Suvarna is good, capturing those beautiful locations around the farm house.
Among the supporting cast, Uday Tikekar, Sagar Talashikar, Mangesh Satpute, Pari Telang are fine. Sayaji Shinde, is just namesake in special appearance for one scene. There are few new faces also in the supporting cast. Director Hemant Deodhar has done a good job as a director. But, the two hour long film drags on till interval, with just routine passtime material, which ultimately gains momentum during the entire second half. Some of the dialogues are tailor made to suit the duo comprising of Makarand and Jitendra. ‘Guldasta’ is a display of light humour combined with mockery of our news channels. It has a different style of presentation supported by good performances. There is a doubt, whether the film would receive good response in a city like Mumbai, but, it has chances of pulling the crowds at small towns, especially with single screens, because of the village and city connect through the characters.
Makarand’s Makar Sankranti with ‘Guldasta’
Makarand Anaspure is all excited and is eagerly waiting for the ‘Makar Sankranti’ day, i.e. 14th January 2011. On this auspicious day, Makarand is a all set to present the ‘Guldasta’ first to his would be in his new film and then to his well wishers. “Please watch this new film of mine, released by Zee Talkies; by visiting the nearest theatre and don’t watch the same on pirated DVD, as it will only affect the business of Marathi cinema,” he has earnestly appealed to all the Marathi film lovers.
Talking about the film which is directed by Hemant Deodhar , Makarand says that he and Jitendra Joshi play childhood friends, but when they grow up, they fall in love with the same girl (Tejaswini Lonari) . “And, to know who finally gets the tilgul, please come and watch this film, which to be released on Sankranti day,’ says Makarand. He was all praise for Jitendra Joshi and said that he has performed very well. “You will all enjoy this light comedy with 100% entertainment and a message,” he adds. Incidentally, in the recent past, Makarand has given all three hit films for Zee Talkies, namely ‘De Dhakka’, ‘Sade Made Teen’ and ‘Gallit Gondhal ani Dillit Mujara’
Media is a bridge between the artiste and audience – Tejaswini Lonari
Acting has always been her passion. In her real life too, she has played different roles. She is a naughty sister to her brother, the most obedient daughter to her parents as she is pursuing her post graduation in Business of film making & Television, besides doing her Masters in Arts from Pune University. She knows how important is education in the long run. For her, acting and education can go together.
Tejaswini Lonari, whom we saw in Sony TV’s Hindi serial ‘Chittod Ki Rani Padmini Ka Johur’ in the lead role, made her debut in Marathi films through ‘Guldasta’ opposite Makarand Anaspure and Jitendra Joshi. Her forthcoming film ‘Chinnu‘ directed by her mother Neelima Lonari, is due for release shortly. In this film, Tejaswini plays a village girl who comes to the city to get treatment for her ailing mother, but meets a stranger, who traps her in marriage. Later he sells her off to a Don. In this film Hindi TV artiste Sharad Kelkar plays her co-star, is shown as the right hand of the Don. In short, both the TV stars of Hindi are coming together in this Marathi film.
Marathi Movie World had a chit chat with this Hollywood style actress, during a function in Mumbai and found her to be the most upright young girl in Marathi film industry. According to Tejaswini, the character is more important, while playing a role. “More than offering entertainment, what challenges me is the impact I can create through my role. When people start recognizing me through my character, it will be the best compliment for me,” she feels.
Tejaswini is well aware of media strength in promotion of films. She considers media as the most important sector for a film maker and artiste. She has herself realised the importance of media, during the promotion of her latest film ‘Chinnu’. Talking about this film, she says, “A lot of awareness is to be created about the subject of this film and I am doing my best to meet people to tell them what message this film has for the society. My mother has really worked hard while making this film. Till now, we have received a good response from the people who have seen the promos of this film.”
“I would say that Media is a bridge between an artiste and the audience,” she says philosophically. “In the promotion of our film ‘Chinnu’ we are giving lot of importance to local newspapers from all places of Maharashtra.” Looking at her preparations, one feels that Tejaswini is very much concerned about the promotion of her film through all possible sources to reach out to masses. Marathi Movie World wishes her all the best for her film.
