‘Re Raya’ inspires in spite of limited content

  • DOP: Pratap P Nair.

  • Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke.

During the past few years, in our country we have witnessed many international level sportspersons emerging from small villages. Best examples are Umesh Yadav Cricket, Deepika Kumari( Archery), Vijay Kumar ( Shooting), Sushil Kumar ( Wrestling), Mary Kom( Boxing) and the latest sensation in athletics –is 18 year old Hima Das. If none had spotted their talent and brought them into light, they would not have achieved what they have done till now.

Latest Marathi film ‘Re Raya‘ which is set on the backdrop of sports, revolves around one such national and international level Athlete Aadesh Bhosale( Bhushan Pradhan) . Aadesh, in spite of being the top athlete in the state of Maharashtra and India, is ignored for the prestigious Shiv Chhatrapati award by the state administrators and instead of him an inferior athlete is chosen for this award. Dejected by this favoritism, Aadesh leaves for his remote village at a district place . During his short stay there, he comes across three youngsters from poor families Rahul ( Vivek Chabukswar) , Aakash( Sudarshan Patil) & Vasu ( Hansraj Jagtap) who are really good in sprinting, high jump and archery respectively.

Re Raya Marathi Film Still
Bhushan Pradhan, Vivek Chabukswar , Sudarshan Patil & Hansraj Jagtap in Marathi movie ‘Re Raya’ still.

After taking permission from their parents and asking his guardian to take care of their families, Aadesh brings them to city to offer them training in their respective sports. Since he does not know much about archery, he requests another coach Gavde Sir( Abhijit Chavan) to train Vasu. After some struggle and rigorous training the three youngsters achieve what their mentor Aadesh had expected from them. Though this is an inspiring tale , the turn of sequences in post interval stage become predictable. Besides these three sports, the audience do not get glimpse of any other sports, thus it gives a feeling that National games are played only for these three games.

However, the director has cleverly highlighted the Politics in sports selection, right from the grass root level to the selection of sportspersons to represent state team. He has also thrown light on how the people who have not played a particular sport are made selectors. The non availability of facilities like proper food and toilets especially for girls is clearly shown through two scenes. This is a clear expose of our state associations representing different games and the host state. And therefore, to some extent he has succeeded in presenting what he wanted to convey to real sports lovers.

The best thing about this film is the selection of the artistes to play all the important characters. Bhushan Pradhan looks a perfect athlete and has displayed his emotions well. The three young artistes Vivek Chabukswar , Sudarshan Patil & Hansraj Jagtap have fulfilled the expectations from them with hard work displayed clearly through their body language, as they were more involved in action sequences. Sanskruti Balgude has been used as a show piece in this sports oriented film. Her role has not been defined properly. But, as a strong supporter of her boyfriend who is totally committed to coaching, she does well in all those few scenes to her share. In the supporting roles of School Sports teacher and Archery Coach, Uday Tikekar and Abhijit Chavan are impressive. Playing the role of little Aadesh, child star Malhar Dandge is good and so are Prakash Dhotre and Nayan Jadhav in the respective roles of Aadesh’s father and close friend .

Music by Mangesh Dhakde is just fine but Pratap Nair has captured all those action moments through his camera superbly. Story idea of Kiran Berad is inspiring, but he should have paid more attention on expanding the screenplay extra skillfully and supporting it with dialogues more capturing, with his limited content. However, the intention of film maker is good and he sends across a good message to the society and especially to all those sports lovers.

Both of them have been part of national award winning films. While Hansraj Jagtap won national special jury award for best child actor, Rajeshwari Kharat was part of the film ‘Fandry’, which won national award for the film’s director on debut. Though Hansraj had plenty of scope to prove his talent in ‘Dhag’, Rajeshwari didn’t have much to do in ‘Fandry’. But now, both these teenagers have been brought together in a so called different love story, through the film ‘Item Girl’.

Recently, the first teaser of this film has been released on social networking sites and it clearly gives an indication that it has much more than only the love story. After the success of ‘Sairat’, now, Marathi film makers are also paying attention on the subjects of teenagers, on the rural backdrop. And, hence ‘Itemgiri’ is just another example. Produced by Amit Taware, Pradeep Beldare and Santosh kadam, it is directed by Pradeep Tonge and Mangesh Shendge. DOP Vikas Singh, music by P.Shankaran , background music by Rohit Nagbhide are other credits.

‘Yaari Dosti’ offers a good subject but lacks proper presentation

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Stories on the subject of street children have always inspired Marathi film makers. ‘Well Done Bhalya’ and ‘Half Ticket’ are the recent examples. Now, Shantanu Anant Tambe, who had earlier made a film ‘Majhi Shala’, presents two such street children Gatar ( Hansraj Jagtap) and Nala( Akash Waghmode) who work for a local Gangster in city of Mumbai. Actually, they have a group of four friends, the other two being Chaddi and Pari. One day, when Nala fails in his duty, the Gangster beats him up, having suffered a big loss. Gatar who is close friend of Nala, bangs a water pot on the Don’s head and both of them run away from that place.

They land in Chiplun ( Konkan) and find shelter in a Boys hostel of a local school. Initially Prasad ( Ashish Gade) and Rahul (Sumit Bhokse)hesitate to offer them shelter next day, as the house keeping people clean the rooms, while the boys are in class. So, Nala prefers to watch the cricket net practice, while Gatar attends the class, along with Prasad and Rahul, wearing school uniform of one of them. Nala impresses cricket Coach Arjun Sir( Sandeep Gaikwad) , who after hearing his past story, goes out of his way to help him and also his friend to attend class unofficially, taking the class teacher Sonal madam( Neesha Parulekar) into confidence. So, we find Nala & Gatar attending class along with Prasad and Rahul in the same class.

What really happens when the school principal Wanzode Sir comes to know about their plan, has been shown in a dramatic way, in the post interval session of the film. The story of Nala and Gatar has been narrated by one of the characters in this story to his co passenger, during the flight of a plane.

Marathi Movie 'Yaari Dosti'
Marathi Movie ‘Yaari Dosti’

The makers of this film had good intention of showing how the street children could be brought into mainstream, if offered proper education and grooming them into activities of their interest. But, their presentation part in the screenplay fails to appeal. A lot of time has been wasted in taking liberties to show Nala and Gatar into all such bad habits of smoking and drinking alcohol in the school premises and even offering the same to their so called friends Prasad and Rahul. This sends a wrong message to young audience. To bring their friendship more closer, they haven’t done anything special, except for Gatar helping Prasad to express his love to his 9th standard classmate Rani( Mitali Jagtap) and both of them teaching a lesson to a boy called Rane, who is blocking their love.

The success story of Nala in the game of cricket, is almost identical with the story of a young cricketer in the Marathi film ‘Well Done Bhalya’ released in the recent past. The director has paid more attention on bad words spoken by Nala and Gatar instead of focussing more on their body language. Instead, he could have paid more attention on their reforms, in the company of Prasad and Rahul. In the screenplay, this film has done the same mistake, what the makers of ‘Well Done Bhalya’ had done, by selecting the non student of the school to play for the school’s team. There are many more unconvincing scenes, which have failed to appeal the audience.

Only good part about the film are the performances of Hasraj Jagtap , Akash Waghmode and Mitali Mayekar. Good support comes from Sandeep Gaikwad, in the role of cricket coach and also from Aashish Gade , Sumit Bhokse and others. The only good song in the film is shown at the end of the film. Background music of Sachin-Dipesh is fine and so is the cinematography of Raj kadur. ‘Yaari Dosti’ has turned out to be Just an average entertainer and a dream seller for the underprivileged children. But, can they afford to see this film in theatres?

Team ‘Yaari Dosti’ welcome Lord Ganesha with a difference

Every film maker has different ways of promoting his film. Makers of ‘Yaari Dosti‘ in an event recently asked their four lead artistes to prepare a mini Ganesha made of clay, in presence of invitees. And, they did so, naming him as ‘Ganu’. The venue at NSCI Worli had a festive look, with scented flavour atmosphere with flower decor around and specially decorated Rangoli inviting the attention of all. Above all, well known singer Adarsh Shinde added extra flavour singing the ‘Bappa Bappa..‘ song on the traditional drum beats.

Written and directed by Shantanu Tambe the film revolves around the friendship of four youngsters played by national award winner Hansraj Jagtap along with ‘Shala‘ fame Aakash Waghmode and newcomers Aashish Gade & Sumit Bhokse. The film also stars Sandeep Gaikwad, Mitali Mayekar, Namrata Jadhav, Shreyas Raje , Nisha Parulekar, Manisha Kelkar, Ashok Pavade, Janardan Singh & Manish Shinde. ‘Dhag’ is a path breaking Marathi film

Dhag Movie Poster
Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio / Presenter: Jayashree Motion Picture
Producer: Vishal Pandit Gaware
Director: Shivaji Lotan Patil
Screenplay: Nitin Dixit
Cinematographer: Naagraj

Cast: Upendra Limye, Usha Jadhav, Hansraj Jagtap, Nagesh Bhosale, Suhasini Deshpande, Neha Dakhinkar
Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

There have It is very difficult to know the reason for delay in releasing this path breaking Marathi film ‘Dhag’ during the year 2013, when the film had won National award for best direction and in best actress category, besides receiving special mention of the Jury for the child artiste, in March 2013. But, if this film was released last year, it would have made a big difference. However, it is always ‘better late than never’.
Dhhag Marathi

‘Dhag’ is now finally released this week. Produced by Vishal Pandit Gavare and directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil, the film was also highly appreciated by the critics at 2012 PIFF and Goa Int Film Fest. It also received the appreciation of Jury, including Academy awards winner Resul Pookutty. The film had also received appreciation from dignitaries like Saie Paranjape & Shabana Azmi. Last year, the film had won 6 awards in Ma Ta Sanman

Needless to say that ‘Dhag’ is an off beat Marathi film, which revolves around a teenager Krishna (Hansraj Jagtap), living in a village with his father Shripati (Upendra Limaye), who operates at the only crematorium in that village. Mother Yashoda (Usha Jadhav) a housewife, an old Grandmother and a younger sister are his other family members. Krishna doesn’t seem to be interested in carrying forward the family tradition of managing a crematorium and hence prefers to study at a village school. He even does a part time job at a juice centre, besides attending school, when he finds that his family is facing financial crisis. However, the harsh comments from his teacher about his family’s profession, forces him to drop out of the school.

The film goes on to show how Krishna’s family is solely dependent on the money earned during the last rites performed and hence, when there are no deaths in the village, Shripati has to find some temporary work at his friend- Mangya’s workshop. Still, he doesn’t get paid for his services, as his friend’s wife is ill and bed ridden. One day, Shripati dies of snake bite and the whole family is traumatized. Mangya takes care of the family; but, Krishna and his mother are hesitant to approve his help. Krishna’s grandmother also warns her daughter-in-law about Mangya’s intentions of being so generous. When Krishna hears their discussion, he realizes his duty at that time. So, he steps into his father’s shoes; and also starts attending school for a better future.

Usha Jadhav, Actress

‘Dhag’ is a very realistic and thought provoking film. Director Shivaji Lotan Patil, who had earlier directed a sensational film ‘Vaavtal’, offers this sensible subject . The film has one national award winning actor Upendra Limaye and with Usha Jadhav also winning the national award for best actress, for her performance in this film; whatever praise about their performances will be less. Usha has already received compliments from Bollywood, with her selection in ‘Bhootnath 2′ in presence of Amitabh Bachchan. Upendra has limited scope; but, he has impressed through his role. Moreover the director also having won the National award for best direction, goes on to say everything about his excellent work. But, the talented child actor Hansraj, who also received special mention from the Jury at the last national awards, deserves all the praise.

The performance of this child artiste, is more appealing in the film. Good support also comes from supporting artistes Nagesh Bhosle, Suhasini Deshpande, and Neha Dakhinkar . Excellent presentation of Screenplay by Nitin Dixit, good cinematography by Naagraj, perfect editing by Nilesh Gavand, suitable music composition by Aadi Ramchandran and Amit Gupta’s sound design have added value to this thought provoking film, which is a ‘must see’ for all.
