‘Cheater’ plays ‘Bhool Bhulaiya’ to present a horror comedy

Over the years we have been watching horror films of Bollywood and Hollywood. Even some Marathi film makers did attempt horror films in the past. But, during the past 10 years, we saw the trend of horror films changing slowly, with introduction of horror-comedy theme in Bollywood. 2007 Bollywood film ‘Bhool Bhulaiya‘ was the best example. Now, director Ajay Phansekar has tried similar type of experiment in Marathi, offering something new to Marathi film lovers through his latest Marathi film ‘Cheater‘.
The film revolves around Abhay ( Vaibhav Tatwawdi) who is the son of a Agnihotri Brahmin father from Pune, who is regarded the highest priest of the community. Abhay’s brother and sister are well qualified. But, this happy go lucky youngster, cheats people for fun. He is in love with Mridula, who arrives in Pune, from Mauritius to study her post graduation in Psychology. One day, Mridula has to leave for Mauritius, as her father Mr. Satam ( Hrishikesh Joshi) has a surprise for their entire family, comprising of Mridula, her TV addict mother ( Aasavari Joshi) her grand mother ( Suhas Joshi) and younger brother ( Jeevan Kalarkar). But, on entering the new house, Mridula’s grand mother has unusual experience. So, she suggests her son to perform Vastu Pooja of the new Villa, to be done only by a Brahmin from Agnihotri family from Pune. When Mridula seeks help from Abhay, he himself arrives, posing as a Swami.
With his very first interaction with Abhay, Mridula’s father doubts his credentials; but Mridula’s mother and Grandmother approve Abhay and believe in his work. Abhay promises to release all negative energy from the house within 5 days. But, the spirit of a young woman appears in front of him, during night hour and challenges him. She seeks help from Abhay to liberate her soul after searching what she wants. But, for that, her soul has to enter the body of a living person. So, one by one she picks up each member of Mridula’s family members, to create comedy scenes in this horror based screenplay. Needless to mention that in the climax of the film, she achieves what she desires.
Good thing about this film is that all the artistes in this film have combined well, to create a perfect timing for comedy, making the audience forget that they are watching a horror film. Hrishikesh Joshi is the best among them. Vaibhav Tatwawdi has proved that he can fit into any type of role. His chemistry with Pooja Sawant has worked very well. Good support comes from Aasavari Joshi and Suhas Joshi. Director Ajay Phansekar has succeeded in entertaining the audience, especially in the second half of the film. But, to enjoy this film, the audience have to keep their logical thinking aside. The film maker already makes it clear, before the start of the film, through a declaration that the film does not promote blind faith. Music in this film is not very impressive, in spite of the voices of reputed singers like Avadhoot Gupte and Sonu Nigam. But, the background music is impressive. B.Laxman’s cinematography has skillfully captured some of the beautiful locations in Mauritius. Santosh Gawde has designed the costumes of the artistes very well.
‘Cheater‘ may appeal to those, who enjoy such type of horror comedy films. For others, it is just an average entertaining film.

‘Poshter Girl’ spreads timely message to today’s youth
Rating: ★★★ ½
Genres: Comedy, Drama Censor: U Duration: 142 Min. Studio/presenter: Viacom 18 Motion Pictures Pvt Ltd Producer(s): Deepak Director: Sameer Patil Writer: Hemant Dhome Music: Amitraj Cinematographer (DOP): Pushpank Gawade Cast: Sonalee Kulkarni, Jitendra Joshi, Aniket Vishwasrao, Siddharth Menon, Hemant Dhome, Sandeep Pathak, Akshay Tanksale, Hrishikesh Joshi Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Every sensible film maker has his own way of spreading a social message, through the medium of cinema. Indeed, cinema can change the opinion of people, towards an important social issue. Over the years, many well known film makers have tried their best to deliver social message, with the help of entertainment. But, it is very important to present the subject, through screenplay, in such a way, that the film doesn’t become a documentary.
Through latest released Marathi film ‘Poshter Girl’, writer Hemant Dhome and director Sameer Patil have tried their best to deliver a social message, to draw the attention of audience towards two important issues, i.e. female feticide and land grab of poor farmers, in the name of development. And, they have succeeded in their mission.
The film has been set on the rural backdrop, showing one such village Tekavade, which has banned the birth of a girl child, for the past 15 years. Even if any girl is born, the mother along with the girl child, are asked to leave the village. So, these women have no option, but to leave the village and shift to their parent’s place in other village. One day, a mod girl Rupali (Sopnalee Kulkarni) based in Pune and preparing for her MPSC exams, comes to this village to her Uncle’s ( Hrishikesh Joshi) place, to attend a religious ceremony of her departed father. And, her arrival, changes the outlook of all eligible bachelors in the village. All of them, want her to be their would be wife.
Realizing the situation in the village, Rupali plays a clever game, with the help of her friend from the village ( Hemant Dhome), whose father owns a hair cutting saloon and who is also preparing for his MPSC exams. The shortlisted candidates by Rupali, are played by Jitendra Joshi, son of a Village Sarpanch ( Madhav Abhyankar), Aniket Vishwasrao son of a trader Anand Ingale, Siddharth Menon, son of a Beer Shoppe owner Vaibhav Mangle & the twins Ramesh-Suresh , sons of a trader in building materials, respectively. But, when Rupali insists that the boy should be working hard and be a farmer, all of them take up the challenge to do collective farming, to grow Bell pepper. What transpires through this process, has been cleverly presented by the director in humorous way.
Some of the scenes in the film, especially in post interval session, have been over stretched. Moreover, the conclusion part of the film is predictable; but, the intention of the film maker being good, this drawback of the film, can be ignored. You can’t compare this film, with the director’s previous hit film ‘Poshter Boyz’, as the situation in his previous film, was totally different. ‘Poshter Girl’ has much more to offer, to the people living in rural areas. But, we only hope that the film reaches to them.
Wonderful performances by a big team of popular artistes, add vigor into this humor filled film. While Sonalee Kulkarni, has shown lot of improvisation in her acting, especially the style of her dialogue delivery; Hrishikesh Joshi entertains through his comedy punches and spontaneous body language. Hemant Dhome, being a writer of this film, has opted for a non-comedy role and he has played it convincingly. Aniket Vishwasrao has also presented something different, through his introvert character of Bajarang. Siddharth Menon suits well as a 20 year old happy go lucky youngster . Sadeep Patrhak and Akshay Tanksale provide good entertainment as fun loving twin brothers.
Good support is provided by other artistes in the film, comprising of Madhav Abhyankar, Neha Shitole, Anand Ingale, Vaibhav Mangale, Jaywant Wadkar & others.
Music is not very impressive, except for one DJ song, which is expected to popularize, at rural festivals and one traditional Lavani, which has been picturised on debutant Rasika. All in all ‘Poshter Girl’ is not an ‘out of the box’ kind of film, but an entertaining commercial masala film, with a timely social message, for the entire family.

‘Poshter Boyz’ – a super duper comedy
Rating: ★★★★
Studio / Presenter: Affluence Movies, Shreyas Talpade Producers: Dipti Talpade, Hadi Ali Abrar Story, Screenplay, Director: Sameer Patil Editor: Ajeet Nair Cinematographer: Pushpank Gawde Music: Leslie Lewis Cast: Dilip Prabhavalkar, Hrishikesh Joshi, Aniket Vishwasrao, Pooja Sawant, Neha Joshi, Anshuman Vicharem Uday Sabnis, Bharat Ganeshpure, Murli Sharma Movie Review by: Sanskruti Bhatkar |
Most of the Marathi films have certain amount of humour included in the main story. But, pure comedy films are rarely done. After, late Dada Kondke’s rib tickling village based comedies and the perfect timing of comedy used by Ashok Saraf and late Laxmikant Berde in few of their past films, no such attempt appears to have been made, in the recent past. But, new Marathi film ‘Poshter Boyz’ is purely an entertaining film of a different style. It is a story of three gentlemen staying in Vadaner village of Maharashtra, whose photos together appear on a poster. These three main characters in the title roles are Jagan Deshmukh alias Aaba (Dilip Prabhavalkar) Sadanand Kulkarni alias Mastar (Hrishikesh Joshi) and young Arjun Jagtap (Aniket Vishwasrao).
At the beginning of the film the trio visit a Village fair and take their photographs. How these photographs are misused, has been disclosed at the end of the film. After this, some strange incidents take place. Engagement of the daughter of Aaba Deshmukh is broken. When Arjun Jagtap’s girlfriend (Pooja Sawant)’s father sees him first time, he opposes their marriage. Mastarji’s wife (Neha Joshi) suddenly comes to his school and threatens him to divorce. Finally, when they notice the poster on a bus off neighbouring Takali village, the trio realises the matter.
How the careless and clumsy attitude of Health Department tarnishes the image of three simple living villagers, how their lives are affected and how they fight against the injustice, is superbly depicted in the film. Finally, the Chief Minister (Shreyas Talapade) very delicately untangles this mess.
All the actors have played their roles very convincingly. Director Sameer Patil has presented all the scenes in such a way that that the film has turned out to be a super duper comedy. Music of the film composed by Leslie Lewis matches well with the tempo of the film. The brief appearances of celebrities has been used well in this film. The movie is successful in giving a good message.
‘Poshter Boyz’ is an entertaining and hilarious film with all the potentials to pull the audience to the theatre. Just like popular Hindi movies ‘Jane Bhi Do Yaro’ or ‘Hera Pheri’, you would like to watch the film again and again. A must watch Film !
‘Aandhali Koshimbir’ offers Sitcom, with a variety
Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio / Presenter: Sudha Productions Producer: Anuya Mhaiskar Director: Aditya Ingle Writer: Pratap Deshmukh Cinematographer: Pushpank Gawade Music: Narendra Bhide Cast: Ashok Saraf, Vandana Gupte, Anand Ingle, Hrishikesh Joshi, Aniket Vishwasrao, Hemant Dhome, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Priya Bapat- Kamat Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Finally, a neat and clean comedy is back to Marathi cinema with the release of ‘Aandhali Koshimbir’. Set on the backdrop of Pune city, the film revolves around Bapu Sadavarte (Ashok Saraf) , a retired widower, living in his bungalow, in the company of his only young son Shrirang (Aniket Vishwasrao) ,who is yet to settle down in his life. Shrirang with his friend Vasant ( Hemant Dhome) who manages his family photo studio; attempts different businesses; but, does not succeed. He is indebted to Goraksha, a Don in all bad business.
In order to repay the loan of Goraksha, Shrirang on the advice of his friend Vasant, agrees to mortgage his father’s house to Goraksha; with the help of a cunning lawyer Dushyant Marne (Anand Ingale), who wants to marry a widow Shantibai( Vandana Gupte) , living as his tenant with her abnormal daughter Radhika (Mrunmayee Deshpande). With Goraksha himself failing to threaten Bapu Sadavarte, Shrirang and Vasant decide plan no. 2. In the meanwhile, Shrirang falls in love with Goraksha’s sister Manju ( Priya Bapat), who also joins their plan. They try to bring Shantibai and Bapu together, since both of them always open up fights with others, on small issues. But, Bapu and Shanti instead of fighting with each other; turn good friends and that spoils the plan of Shrirang and Vasant; which also angers Marne. With this drama, enough for the screenplay of the film, it takes you to an amusing climax, to show a happy end.
‘Aandhali Koshimbir’ is solely a director’s film and hence at every situation, you notice Aditya Ingale. By the way, he has also written the screenplay and dialogues of this film along with Pratap Deshmukh. His idea of using the three different age groups together in the film’s story, has worked very well. With the help of Ashok Saraf and Vandana Gupte, he has managed their chemistry very well. At the same time, using the characters of Hrishikesh Joshi and Anand Ingale, he has tried to generate the desired momentum into the screenplay.
And finally, using the two young pairs Aniket- Priya and Hemant-Mrunmayee, he has managed to keep the young audience happy, with their different approach to their respective characters. While Aniket and Hemat have timed their humour filled scenes very well, Priya comes with a good support. For the first time, Mrunmayee has attempted something different through her abnormal character. The film is not a non stop laughter film; but certainly enjoyable. The best thing about this film is that, it does not turn vulgar at any moment.
The entire film however belongs to Ashok Saraf, who has been so natural throughout the film. His real acting talent is however noticed in the climax scene, when he reacts, turning emotional. Vandana Gupte has offered a very good support and it was nice to see these two veteran artistes together, after a long time. Anand Ingale finds a good meaty role, and he has lived up to his expectations. Anand has proved that he can fit into any character role; be it a comedy or a villain. In this film, he gets a chance to play both together.
Another actor, who has impressed through his perfect body language in the film, is Hrishikesh Joshi. He has performed the role of Goraksha, very convincingly. Excellent support comes from the young team comprising of Aniket, Hemant , Priya and Mrunmayee. But, the surprise pack comes from late Shrikant Moghe, who is the role of a Judge, makes his presence felt, in the concluding part of the film. Just watch his expressions and a variety while delivering his dialogues. This film is certainly a tribute to him.
There are very few songs in this film; but Vaibhav Joshi’s lyrics, Narendra Bhide’s music, Avinash -Vishwajeet’s title music and Pushpank Gawde’s cinematography, certainly add to film’s good presentation. Above all, the film displays a good team work. Do not watch this film with very high expectations; and then, you will really enjoy it. One thing is sure, that it has offered a situation based comedy with a variety. ‘Aandhali koshimbir’ is certainly a good ‘Time Pass’ film for the entire family.

‘Yellow’ inspires with ‘You can do it’ message
Rating: ★★★★
Studio / Presenter: Viva In En, Mumbai Film Company Producers: Riteish Deshmukh , Uttung Hitendra Thakur Cinematographer, Director: Mahesh Limaye Story: Ambar Hadap, Ganesh Pandit Music: Kaushal Inamdar Cast: Upendra Limye, Mrunal Kulkarni, Hrishikesh Joshi, Aishwarya Narkar, Usha Nadkarni, Gauri Gadgil Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Rob Liano, the Rock Star Success Coach & Sales Strategist has rightly said, “Nothing is born into this world without labour.” And, if we can recollect Walt Disney’s strategy, ‘If you can dream it, you can do it'; then, there is nothing impossible in this world. Based on this philosophy, producers Riteish Deshmukh and Uttung Thakur have offered a sensible Marathi film ‘Yellow’, which is directed by renowned cinematographer Mahesh Limaye. By the way, Mahesh also makes his debut as a director with this film.
Only last year, we saw director Manohar Sarwankar’s film ‘Maat’, which was also debut of Eshaa Koppikar in Marathi and which talked about the success story of a ‘deaf-mute’ girl, who turns a Chess Champion, with the support of her mother; who has been deserted by her selfish husband; only because the child is born with a handicap. However, through this film – ‘Yellow’, director Mahesh Limaye presents a real life success story of a girl, born with ‘down syndrome’. And, he has done a commendable job, as presenting a real life character – Gauri Gadgil, who has already won two silver medals in Special Olympics; has made ‘Yellow’ more appealing than ‘Maat’.
Mugdha (Mrunal Kulkarni) and Shekhar (Manoj Joshi) give birth to a girl – Gauri, who is born with ‘down syndrome’. Mugdha , who is already a teacher, wants her daughter to study in the same school, with normal children. But, when she finds her score in IQ as 65, the principal suggests her to admit Gauri to a special school. However, Shekhar is unable to accept Gauri as his daughter and suggests Mugdha to go for second child. One day, Mugdha gets the biggest shock in her life, when she witnesses Shekhar let Gauri drowned in a water tank at a resort, instead of running to help her out. Taking an immediate decision to leave her husband, Mugdha arrives at her brother Shree’s (Hrishikesh Joshi) house, who being a bachelor, offers all the love and affection to Gauri, besides managing his ‘tent house’ business.
When, Mugdha admits Gauri to a school for special children, Prinicipal (Aishwarya Narkar) suggests her to join the school, as a teacher. On the advice of the principal, Mugdha is advised to admit Gauri for swimming, noticing her keen interest and especially for improving her ‘hand and eye’ coordination. It is at this place, Gauri interacts initially with a good elderly coach and later with a strict coach – Pratap Sardeshmukh ( Upendra Limaye), training at advanced level. It is at this stage, the film goes on to describe how such children are to be treated, to extract the best out of them.
Director Mahesh Limaye, has beautifully captured the emotion filled moments through his camera lenses, besides directing the most difficult sequences, in an efficient manner, generating humour at short intervals, through light humour filled scenes. Ambar Hadap and Ganesh Pandit have really worked hard, to present an engaging screenplay with the support of wonderful performances from all the artistes. Mrinal Kulkarni, who has played Gauri’s possessive mother, has been able to display perfect emotions of a worried mother, while Manoj Joshi has cleverly presented a selfish husband through his limited role.
There is no doubt about the brilliant natural performance given by Gauri Gadgil, as this was her own real life success story; but the little girl performing her childhood role, also looks very natural. In fact, Gauri actually appears on the screen only few minutes before interval, when her coach for advance training – Upendra Limaye also arrives on the screen, around that time. Upendra has also given a fantastic performance, understanding very well the given situation and more particularly, the attitude of all such Indian coaches in different games, at competitive level. However, the most impressive performance comes from Hrishikesh Joshi, who looks very natural, in the character of Gauri’s real well wisher and caring uncle. It is because of his presence, there is some humour generated, in this otherwise thought provoking film.
Through this film, the director has also presented the attitude of a typical sports coach, who always demand more from their students, without paying the required attention on sports psychology and the much desired counselling, expected from them. At the same time, he has also shown how the parents interfere with the training methods of the Coach, by showing their regular presence, at the practice venue of the sport. ‘Yellow’ is certainly an inspiring film and a must watch for all. There are very few errors noticed in the film; as it is otherwise a technically well presented film, with good background music provided by kaushal Inamdar.
