In the first part of ‘Time Pass’’ we saw the love story taking place between Dagadu( Prathamesh Parab) and Prajakta ( Ketaki Mategaonkar) during their adolescence . But, due to timely intervention of Prajakta’s father Madhusudan Lele ( Vaibhav Mangale) and useful advice given by Prajakta’s teacher, we noticed a ‘break up’ in their relationship, in the film’s climax.  But, director Ravi Jadhav had clearly hinted that their love story would continue.

Now, in Part 2 of ‘Time Pass’, we notice director Ravi Jadhav setting a stage for their reunion after 12 years. But, this time, you will not see the same actors playing their characters, as the grown up Dagadu is played by actor – director Priyadarshan Jadhav, who had assisted Ravi Jadhav in ‘Time Pass’, while Prajakta is played by Priya Bapat – Kamat.

In the opening scene of this second part , we notice Dagadu turning a politician and social worker of his area, inaugurating an Ambulance service; while Prajakta, far away in Konkan, still dreaming about her reunion with Dagadu. It is only when Dagadu’s inner voice ( In the form of Prathamesh Parab)reminds him about his ‘past love’, Dagadu prepares to go to Konkan, along with his three friends with funny names, in search of Prajakta. He does meet her on his way, but both don’t recognize each other.

Timepass 2, Moviestill, Priya Bapat Kamat

The actual love story between grown up Dagadu and Prajakta takes off, only post interval; as Dagadu first plans to impress Prajakta’s father, posing himself as Navin, a scientist from BARC. He even succeeds to a certain extent. But, Prajakta visits Mumbai, around that time, under the pretext of preparing for her music exams. And, finally, both of them meet in Mumbai, when Prajakta comes to know, his real identity. The film’s screenplay then proceeds further, with some more dramatic happenings, coming in the way of their reunion. Finally, it’s happy end in a predictable climax.

‘Time Pass-2′ has wasted a lot of time in the pre interval stage, before it takes actual grip on the continuation of Dagadu- Prajakta love story. In this second part, the director has paid more attention, giving emotional touch to this love story, besides showing the caring attitude of the protective father. This time, he has also added some action scenes, to show Dagadu a real Super hero. To add some humor, the characters of a photographer from the village, in love with Prajakta and Dagadu’s three friends have been added in a traditional style. But, one fails to understand, why a director of repute Viju Mane, agreed to play a bad man, in a casting couch episode?

‘Time Pass-2′ has good music, but not as superior as Part 1. Even the much talked about item number ‘Pichkari..’, performed by Sonalee Kulkarni, fails to appeal much, as the attention of the audience is more focused on Priya Bapat, who dances as a Junior artiste in that sequence. Barring few such shortfalls, ‘Time Pass-2′ still manages to appeal, because of the fine performances of all the artistes. But, among all of them, Vaibhav Mangle stands tall, with his outstanding performance. Prathamesh Parab , Ketaki Mategaonkar, Bhau Kadam, Bhushan Pradhan , Urmila Kanetkar Kothare and others, are just namesake in this film.  All in all, ‘Time Pass 2′ offers emotion filled entertainment.  But, don’t watch this film, with an intention of comparing it with Part 1.  Don’t forget that it is a pure ‘Time Pass’ film.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Is teenage love affair a real love or a time pass? How many such teenage love affairs have been successful in the long run ? These are few a valid questions, posed by director Ravi Jadhav, who has in the recent past, given three hit Marathi films – ‘Natarang’, ‘Balgandharva’ and ‘Balak Palak’. In fact, his last film ‘Balak Palak’ ( BP) based on the lives of teenagers, was released in the beginning of year 2013 and now ‘Time Pass’ almost opens the new year 2014 account of Marathi films, with a neat and clean presentation of teen age love. Just two years ago, we saw a film ‘Shala’ also on teenage love; but it was more one sided. ‘Time Pass’ goes one step further, to show how love happens from both sides, without thinking much about the future prospect.

‘Time Pass’ begins with happening of love between a girl Prajakta, who has just joined college and a 10th class failed boy Dagadu, who delivers newspaper at Prajakta’s place. Prajakta’s father who works as a clerk in Central Government office, is a very strict person and keeps close watch on Prajakta’s activities after college hours. He sends his daughter for Classical Singing classes to Spruha (Urmila Kanitkar-Kothare). Prajakta who is impressed by Dagadu’s open nature and his way of living a free life, starts liking him. She even begins dating with him, only to be caught by her father one day. Besides being scolded by her parents, she is kept under strict vigilance. Prajakta is also advised by her singing teacher to give a full stop to her affair, after she comes to know about her affair.
Ketaki Mategaonkar

The film ends with a valuable message, clearly indicating that good education is very important to bridge the gap between “Have’s and ‘Have nots” about teenage love lasting till marriage time. More than this simple story, it is the screenplay of this film, written by Ravi Jadhav and Priyadarshan Jadhav, that makes the film more interesting in the first half. Even some of the situations in the film, like interaction of the young boy and girl in a Library, at a roadside hotel, during the wedding preparations at the marriage of Dagadu’s friend’s sister and one near the temple; are well captured to show the progress of their love.

There is a good humour filled scene, involving Dagadu and Prajakta’s father during the small birthday party of Prajakta’s brother, where Dagadu is invited by Prajakta’s brother. Similarly, the climax scene at Prajakta’s place with Dagadu being cross examined by Prajakta’s relatives, has been well presented. The film concludes giving a clear hint of ‘Time Pass 2′ displaying the words ‘to be continued’ instead of ‘The End’.

Besides presenting the humour filled teenage love story of two youngsters, very effectively, the film does leave some questions unanswered. Such as, why Prajakta’s father had continued to oppose the love between his son Vallabh with Spruha, even after both of them completing their education? If he was so much opposed to Spruha, why did he send his teenaged daughter to her place, for tuitions? How is a 10th failed student like Dagadu allowed inside the college premises ,wearing shorts and that too his friends passing comments at girls, in the college premises? In the film, there is nothing very special done by the character of Dagadu – a boy with typical poor class looks, to impress a good looking girl like Prajakta from a well to do family, except for his acting skills and guts to express his love.

His only plus points shown in the film are that he earns something for his family by delivering newspapers, attempting a road show to raise funds, by driving a bicycle for three days non stop, to repay the rickshaw loan of his father and most importantly, not crossing his limits in love. The film hints at happening of this story sometime during 80s and hence the events taking place are somewhat convincing. The film does slow down a bit in post interval session. However, the good music offered by film is refreshing, with all meaningful songs. Even the lyrics of the item song rendered in the voice of Reshma Sonavane ( ‘Vaat baghtoy rickshawala’ fame) seemed to be perfectly matching with the situation. Above all, the excellent camera work brings visual delight.

In the role of Dagadu Shantaram Parab, young Prathamesh Parab has proved that acting is all that important to effectively present an ordinary looking young boy. Perhaps he got inspiration from Dhanush’s character in ‘Ranjhana’. He has also paid more attention on his dialect to portray a perfect young boy from slums. With his simplicity displayed through this character, he has certainly invited sympathy of the audience. He is simply superb! In the role of Prajakta , Ketaki Mategaonkar is almost typecast, as we have seen her play a similar type of role in ‘Shala’. Only difference is that, this time, she tries to hide her love from her parents and feels free to reciprocate her love to her young friend. She finds two good scenes to express her emotions, as compared to Prathamesh, who has better scope.

In the role of Prajakta’s father Vaibhav Mangale has done a very good job. He has been able to generate lots of humour filled scenes, besides turning strict and emotional through few important scenes. Meghana Erande Joshi, who plays Prajakta’s mother in this film, has done well. In the role of Spruha, Urmila Kanitkar-Kothare is impressive, though she finds only two good scenes to display her acting skills. Otherwise, she is just represented as a music teacher. In the role of Prajakta’s elder brother, Bhooshan Pradhan almost plays a guest appearance, as he has nothing much to perform, except for lifting weights in Gym and displaying his biceps. Even, Bhalchandra Kadam has limited role, with only one good scene to express his emotions. The other youngsters in supporting roles offer good back up in this teenage love story. Dialogues are well written with nothing vulgar noticed. ‘Time Pass’ is an entertaining film with a timely message.

“I am all excited about my film’s release” – Ketaki

Ketaki Mategaonkar the 12th standard student, who few years ago entertained the audience with her magical voice on Zee TV’s popular musical show, is now playing a lead role of a perfect school going 9th standard teenager in Sujay Dahake’s much awaited Marathi film ‘Shala’( School), which is all set to release on 20th January 2012 all over Maharashtra.

Ketaki MategaonkarKetaki was lucky enough to be spotted by Film maker Sujay Dahake to play the lead role in his film ‘Shala’. The film was shot during the year 2010-11, when Ketaki was in 11th standard. It was all set to release last year around Ganapti festival time, but couldn’t find a distributor. But when film maker Mahesh Manjrekar saw this film, he was highly impressed with the subject. He also liked the performances of the children. He is now releasing this film under his banner ‘The Great Maratha Entertainment’. The screenplay of this film has been adapted from the best selling novel of the same name , by reputed Marathi novelist Milind Bokil.

The novel looks at the passionate love in its purest and elementary form, in school, i.e. the form of the first love. The movie is an attempt to bring the very essence of pure, unrequited love that the character Joshi a 9th standard schoolboy feels for his classmate, Shirodkar. Ketaki plays this character of Shirodkar and looks very confident in that role. Even before its official release the film has already been shown at various festivals like MIFTA at London, where it was premiered, then at the 10th Asian Film festival, Mumbai, the 7th Asian Film Festival, Pune & Kolhapur and at Leicester Square, Prince Charles Theatre. It has also been screened at NCPA’s Marathi Film Festival- Nave Valan and has received a good response.

Ketaki was present recently during the press conference of this film at Ravindra Natya Mandir, to announce the date of film’s release, when she spoke to MarathiMovieWorld.com about her experience in film. “I began my career as a singer, but when this acting assignment came to me, I became more serious about acting. We had to undergo a workshop on acting, where myself and other children were explained about our behaviour with each other during shooting. Today, we children talk to each other very freely. But, it was different situation 35 years ago, the actual period shown in this film. Hence we all had to pose ourselves very shy, while interacting with each other. Especially, when I faced the camera in scenes opposite my co star Anshuman Joshi. There were many good things we learned from our Cinematographer Diego Romero and it was a good experience.” said Ketaki.

Speaking about managing her shooting schedules besides her studies, Ketaki said that “The shootings of this film took place as per our convenience, in few spells and it was like being with our own family. Sujayda, our director was perfect in his work and I learned so many good things from him. I am really thankful to him for selecting me for this role.” She added. Smart and confident looking Ketaki faced the media with poise. Now, Ketaki is all excited to see how people respond to this film. “Please come and see this film in theatre.” was her appeal.
