Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Western culture has a lot of influence on our today’s youngsters. And, film maker & writer Sachin Kundalkar has lot to say on this, through his latest released Marathi film ‘Rajwade & Sons’, which presents three generations of a high profile joint business family, from Pune. Set on the backdrop of this historical city, which is known for preserving the traditional Maharashtrian culture, we find Ramesh Rajwade( Satish Alekar) , managing his family’s customary Goldsmith business very well, with the help of his two sons( Vidyadhar( Sachin Khedekar), Shubhankar ( Atul Kulkarni) and son in law Vaibhav( Rahul Mehendale). Vaibhav ,who is married to Rajwade’s daughter Laxmi ( Mrunal Kulkarni) , lives with the Rajwade family.

Ramesh Rajwade is a disciplined man and wants every member of the family to follow the set of rules. Now, let’s introduce other members of the family. Sushila Rajwade ( Jyoti Subhash) is the wife of this head of the family. Sarita( Purnima Manohar) is the wife of Vidyadhar and the couple has two children, Anay ( Alok Rajwade) and Shweta( Krutika Deo). Laxmi & Vaibhav also have two children, Virajas( Siddharth Menon) & Ananya( Mrunmayee Godbole), while Shubhankar, who is a widower, has only a teenager daughter  Tanmaya(Suhani Dhadphale), the youngest member of the family. And, how can we forget to introduce the pet dog Bubble Gum?

Atul Kulkarni, Rajwade and Sons

So, with this big team of a joint family, we see the happening of a big drama, after the sudden arrival of  the missing member of the family- handsome Vikram (Amitriyan Patil) . And, it is Vikram who brings in the desired change, required in the family, playing a perfect balance, between the older  and younger generation.

The film actually talks about the mind set  of each member of the family. And, therefore it may relate to ,many such people from the well to do joint families. All that the film maker has to convey through his film, is a message for all those parents, not to block their children’s wish, if they want to  pursue a particular career. But, All said and done through the film’s screenplay, it certainly makes you think, as to how the film would relate to middle class and lower middle class families? Anyway, the intention of the film maker being good, it is to be appreciated that he has attempted something different in Marathi films. He has certainly created that atmosphere of a rich family, clearly showing, how the young generation thinks differently, unlike their parents and grandparents, when it comes to fulfilling their dreams. The makers of this film, have cleverly endorsed many products through this film.

Director Sachin Kundalkar has lot more to convey, through some interesting happenings in the lives of almost all the family members, excluding the grandparents and Vidyadhar, who is the most obedient elder son of Rajwade family. There are lot many references to different places in Pune and hence Punekars may relate more closely with this film. Wonderful performances of all the artistes, makes this film more effective. In the role of Vikram, Amitriyan Patil adds that special flavour to this film. One fails to understand, as to why he was not used in the publicity campaign of the film? Perhaps, they wanted to surprise all.

The film has very good music and background music to suit the requirement of the subject. Arjun Sorte’s cinematography, wonderful art direction and effective sound designing, are the other assets of the film.

Movie Review by:
 Sanskruti Bhatkar

Directed by Mrinal Kulkarni under the banner of Shivam Jemin Films Pvt. Ltd., new Marathi film Rama  Madhav is based on the Era of the Peshwa Period. It is 17th Century’s immortal love story. Having made debut in direction last year, through ‘Prem Mhanjae Prem Asata’, this is the second film directed by Mrinal Kulkarni. Through this film Mrinal kulkarni presents the love story of Rama and Madhavrao, covering important happenings in their life.

The film begins with Madhav, (played by Alok Rajwade), son of Narayanrao Peshwa; getting married to little Ramabai (Shruti Karlekar), in a private ceremony in Pune. Then, we find the humour filled incidences, where little Rama interacts with different people in that huge palace, including some appealing encounters with teenaged Madhav. She does receive the affection from Gopikabai ( played by Mrinal Kulkarni) and aunty Parvatibai ( Shruti Marathe); but, has to face the arrogance of another aunty Anandibai ( Sonalee Kulkarni), who is selfish.Rama Madhav, Alok Rajwade, Pictures

After the death of Nanasaheb, sixteen year old Madhavrao is made the next Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. But, Nanasaheb’s brother Raghunathrao( Prasad Oak) , who is supposed to assist him in the administrative affairs, walks out of the office displaying his anger, having lost his chance. Then begins the love and hate story of this film, after Rama grows older by six years, and under the peshwaship of brave Madhavrao, Maratha power recovering from the losses suffered during the Panipat Campaign.

Time comes, when Madhavrao’s health deteriorates after 1770, as he is diagnosed with tuberculosis. Despite the efforts of the best doctor, his end comes at the young age of 27,when Rama sacrifices her life, as sati, the tradition that prevailed those days.

The film has a magnificent feel, because of the costumes made by Poornima oak, suited to that era, lovely art work by Nitin Chandrakant Desai, good music by Anand Modak , proper editing by Jayant Jathar and excellent photography by Rajiv Jain. Mrinal Kulkarni has done a wonderful job as a director and above all, the great performances come from all the artistes right from Shruti Karlekar to veteran Ravindra Mankani. The film is really grand and a worth watching movie. Can watch with your family. In this modern century also, people would surely like to watch such a historical film on big screen.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

A marriage ceremony is usually a happy event. It’s only the living together with understanding in the post marriage period, is all that important to make the couple happy. Today, we hear about rising number of divorce cases, taking place soon after marriage or sometimes even after spending over 10-15 years together. In some cases, it is just a mutual consent between the couple keeping friendly relations, after their divorce; just to keep their children happy. But, does that make the children really happy?

In some cases, either the wife or the husband is away pursuing their career. Among today’s young lovers even before marriage, there are a few break ups. The new trend especially among girls is to postpone the marriage; till they find a suitable match. Till then, live-in-relationship is preferred by them.

In comparison, the people of old generation, who try their best to keep such aggrieved couples together, consider themselves lucky to find their suitable partner and living with them with perfect understanding, throughout their life. But, how is it affecting the young generation, comprising of children? How are they looking at marriage? This is what actress turned director Mrinal Kulkarni has tried to show through her latest released film ‘Prem Mhanje Prem Mhanje Prem Asata’.

Dr.Rohit Phadnis (Sachin Khedekar) is a reputed Doctor in Pune, running his OPD in his own bungalow. His career oriented Astro-Physicist wife Pradnya (Pallavi Joshi) has preferred to migrate to USA after divorcing her husband, leaving him in the company of two children. Living in the same area is Anushree (Mrinal Kulkarni) with her mother-in-law (Suhas Joshi) and two daughters Piya and Ria. Her husband Kedar (Sunil Barve) has deserted her for the past four years. Yet, Anushree’s mother-in-law having a soft corner towards her daughter-in-law, prefers to live with her, taking good care of her grand-daughters; while Anushree is busy running her own florist’s shop.

Dr.Rohit’s and Anu’s children are studying in the same school. One day, while Piya is injured during her basketball match in the school, she is attended by Dr.Rohit. And that incident brings both Rohit and Anu together. While Dr. Rohit still maintains good relationship with his ex-wife, like a good friend, regularly communicating over phone; Anu doesn’t want to see the face of her husband, who has deserted her. But, Kedar is regularly in touch with his daughters over phone, especially his elder daughter Piya (Asmita Joglekar).

Pmpmpa Movie Still
At a time when Dr.Rohit and Anu come closer; Kedar returns back home to drop his mother and daughters from a ceremony and so does Pradnya at Rohit’s place , to attend her brother’s wedding. The relationship between Dr.Rohit and Anu reaches a stage, where both of them have to take a crucial decision. Rohit is firm on his decision and suggests Anu to take her own decision; suggesting that he would always welcome her in his life. In the climax scene, Writer-Director Mrinal takes her bold decision.

As a debutant Director, Mrinal does have certain limitations; but, her sensible script and a desire to send across a strong message with the help of realistic characters helps her to make her presence felt, both as an actress and a director. However, the screenplay by Manisha Korde could have been much more interesting to create the desired impact through few important situations present in the script. She has managed well to take that sudden twist during the interval ; but barring that she has not used the shifts during important sequences skillfully. The wedding ceremony of Pradnya’s brother, has been used just namesake. Similarly, the character of Kedar hasn’t been highlighted much, to indicate the reason for deserting Anu. It is only the fine performances from the artistes, makes you ignore such minor lapses in screenplay.

As a director, Mrinal shows her concern for children who are witness to such estranged relationship of their parents. She clearly shows it through their emotions. At the same time, she shows the sufferings of a woman who has been deserted by her whimsical husband. In that climax scene, she literally stands up to speak up for all such women, who helplessly welcome their husbands back home, in spite of being deserted by them for years. In the same scene, she questions, whether a husband would welcome his wife with the same fervor, when his wife returns back home after staying away for years, deserting her family?

At the same time, she also shows an elderly couple, living with perfect understanding through the characters of her parents played by Mohan Agashe and Smita Talwalkar. Last but not the least, she has presented her younger sister’s ( Neha Joshi) character so perfectly, showing the trend of break ups between young couples even before marriage. In short, she has tried her best to define ‘love’ and its relevance to marriage in her own style. And that really makes this film a worth watch for all age groups.

Excellent photography by Amalendu Choudhary, good music, meaningful lyrics, sensible dialogues and above all, the wonderful performances by all the artistes, gives an artistic touch to this thought provoking film.

Marathi Movie World spoke to this gifted talented actress. Excerpts from an interview:
Q: We have seen you as a successful actress over the years. Besides acting, what are your other interests?

A: I am an ardent reader and a hard core mountaineer, who loves to go on trekking. I also love to travel a lot. It is for this purpose, I keep my entire month of May free to be with my family. We plan a long vacation during this time compulsorily, once in a year.

Q: You also happen to be the grand-daughter of Great Marathi writer G. N. Dandekar. Whether you have continued his legacy through writing?
A: Initially I used to write my column ‘Maitrin’ . then I wrote my own book titled ‘Make up Utravlyavar’ – a Samakaleen Publication. At present I am regularly writing my column in Sakal paper under the title ‘Tanishqa’. It is mainly to inspire women from different fields.

Q: You mean, it is necessary for people involved in your profession to spend their vacation once in a year ?
A: At least, I feel so. It refreshes you a lot to be back in action.

Q: Newcomers in the industry look upon you as a role model of fitness. How do you maintain your fitness level ?
A: I do at least one hour workout daily. It could be anything, either exercising in the Gym or walking. But, I don’t miss my workout.

Q: How you have been able to maintain a perfect balance between Hindi and Marathi industry, in your successful career ?
A: According to me, For every artiste, patience is the key for success . I was fortunate to use it well without any selfish motive. And, it has worked well so far. It’s a proven fact.

Q: But, it is said that you were lucky to find good roles. What you have to say about that?
A: I wasn’t lucky. I made my selection of roles. Here again, I would say, I could afford to wait. It is not necessary to be 24 hours or 30 days busy to be successful.

Q: Don’t you think that the title role you played in ‘Avantika’ and the present role of Naina in the ongoing new serial ‘Guntata Hriday Hey’ have striking similarity ?
A: No, not at all. On the contrary, these two are totally contrast roles. Avantika was very bold and reacted quickly at any given situation, whereas Naina is a paranoid and emotional housewife.
