‘Mukti’ addresses farmers’ issue with a difference
Rating: na
Banner: Placid Films Presenter: Sachin Shamrao Jankar Producer: Sachin Shamrao Jankar Director: Machhindra More Story: Machhindra More Screenplay- Dialogues: Machhindra More Cinematographer: Raja Phadtare Cast: Nandu Madhav, Tejaswini Pandit, Milind Shinde, Nagesh Bhosale, Satish Salagare, Prashant Neman, Gauri Kamble & Charvi Sangkholkar, Ajay Jadhav. Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
In the recent past, few films like ‘Gabhricha Paus’ and ‘Pangira’ have already made a statement on farmer’s suicide and have succeeded in making the audience think about the existing situation in Maharashtra. They also blamed the corrupt system and the Government for their Agricultural policies. Now, Machhindra More through his latest directorial film ‘Mukti’ goes beyond the topic of suicides, to not only show how the family of the victim suffers in this so called corrupt state of India; but has shown some hopes to the farmers of this state, who form a sizable population.
‘Mukti’ is a tale of one such farmer Bhanudas (Nandu Madhav) living in a small village of Maharashtra, which is under drought prone area. The MLA of their area promises water from a dam located at a nearby place. But, Bhanudas alias Bhana (as he is popularly called) is not willing to wait. He is more eager to farm on his 12 acre land and tries his best to dig a well to arrange for water. He thinks big and on the advice of experts decides to use the blast method. Borrowing money from local moneylender Bhujang (Nagesh Bhosale )and taking loan from the bank, he goes ahead with his plans, only to fail in his mission. Dejected with the developments, he commits suicide, by jumping into the dry pit.
After her husband’s death, his wife Baijaa (Tejaswini Pandit) faces a tough challenge to look after her two school going children and old father-in law. She is also under pressure from the Moneylender to repay his loan or surrender herself before him. The local village Sarpanch (Milind Shinde) also plays all the tricks to come close to her, under the pretext of getting the compensation for her.
‘Mukti’ shows all those hardships, a helpless widow has to undergo, after her husband’s death. The film’s screenplay keeps on reminding all those male folks, as to how difficult the life would become for their family, in case they commit suicide.
Things change in the village, in just two years time, after Baija leaves the village with her two children, to escape humiliation at the hands of the moneylender and the village headman. Surprisingly, the film shows better image of the MLA, at a time, when we are witnessing the scams of politicians in Maharashtra. But, as they say, not all politicians are corrupt. The film has however blamed the system comprising of Talathi, tahsildar and the people working in such government offices. Without a bribe, you cannot get the work done. Even to get Rs. One lack compensation released, Baija is told to pay a bribe of 75% of the dues to her, declaring the share of all the Government officers including collector. The climax focuses attention on the Budget of Central Government, where the FM announces waiver of loans by farmers and a new policy to abolish the Moneylenders in villages.
The MLA himself, announces the release of water from the dam through a canal for the village, following which, the news about Baijaa and her children begging at a nearby town reaches the retired schoolmaster. But, the film does not end after return of Baijaa and her children to their village. She has to follow the rituals by offering food to the crow to liberate her husband’s soul. And, this time, the crow does come to eat the food offered. The director begins his film, narrating the significance behind this ritual through animated version, which relates to the happening at the end, when the film concludes with a meaningful poem.
‘Mukti’ is just not the another film on Farmer’s suicide; as it does not only present the dark side but also constantly reminds those farmers, about the repercussions of such drastic steps taken by them. It shows the hope, besides reminding the administration of their lapses. The film does create the required humour into this otherwise serious tragic tale, through the comedy character of Bajaa, played by Ajay Jadhav. Nadu Madhav has played his role with sincerity and so does Tejaswini Pandit, with her fine performance. Having played the character of Sindhutai Sapkal, she looks more confident, playing a village woman in distress. Milind Shinde, Nagesh Bhosale, Satish Salagare, Prashant Neman, Gauri Kamble &Charvi Sangkholkar have done their best in supporting roles. Music does not have much scope in this film, but B.A. Tupe’s music suits well to the village backdrop.
‘Jana Gana Mana’ is an eye opener

Presenter: Outreach Motion Picture Pvt. Ltd. Producer: Golden Dreams Production House, Sandeep Kadam and Sachin Kadam Director: Amit Abhyankar Story: Sameer Joshi Music: Dr. Saleel Kulkarni Camera: Rajesh Khale Cast: Nandu Madhav, Chinmay Sant, Madhura Welankar-Satam, Santosh Juvekar, Asmita Joglekar, Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Roti, Kapada and Makaan are three basic necessities of millions of people living in remote villages of this country. One such village selected by film maker Amit Abhyankar is village Mhalunge in a remote place in Maharashtra. Through his film ‘Jana Gana Mana’ he has tried to send across a strong message to the people about the existing corrupt system and how even a dedicated teacher of a small school in this village is not spared from giving a bribe to the education Inspector of his Taluka.
‘Jana Gana Mana’ also tries to explain how important is education these days to the children of rural poor. Today, many children in these areas attend school, because they are served free meals. Fase Pardhi is one such tribe found at such remote places, who have been deprived of such basic needs, beyond which they have no dreams. The film’s story revolves around one such family of Dagadu ( Santosh Juvekar), his wife ( Madhura Velankar Satam) and his two kids Katu and Babli (Chinmay Sant & Asmita Joglekar).
The focus is however on the importance of education and therefore we find Mr. Sontakke (Nandu Madhav) a dedicated teacher posted to this village to run this small school comprising of about a dozen students. To impress upon the visiting Education Inspector on the independence day, Mr. Sontakke sincerely plans a programme and a parade spending from his own pocket. But, during his one such visit to Taluka office, he learns from the office clerk that he has to pay for it and also entertain the Inspector to get his transfer to a place, where he can stay with his family.
Having seen the lack of interest among the students from the present school, Mr. Sontakke does all that to get his transfer order. But, on his return, he finds the change among the students, especially Katu, in whom he notices change , in spite of his poor background. The film ends with a positive note, showing the teacher tearing off his transfer order and deciding to stay back in the village.
‘Jana Gana Mana’ represents the real rural India with perfect presentation of characters.
After his memorable performance in ‘Harischandrachi Factory’, Nandu Madhav finds one more chance and the versatile actor has come out with another superb performance in that central character of a school teacher. Santosh Juvekar as Dagadu is a perfect choice, being an angry young man into wrong business. And, he has done his part well. Madhura Velankar Satam finds a better role of a typical tribal woman, who works hard to run her house, besides managing her two kids. With dark make up and costumes suited to her character, she looks more truthful. Watch her body language, when she dares to intercept the school teacher to scold him and while doing the first aid for her injured kid. Indeed, Madhura has given her best. The kids too have done well; but Chimay Sant impresses the most in the role of Katu.
The film has successfully managed to convey what the film maker had in mind. With ideal locations, good cinematography and excellent sound effects, the film looks more realistic. Screenplay and dialogues are well written to create that preferred impact. The limited music is pleasant. Those in the supporting roles have offered good support in their respective roles. ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is a timely film, which should inspire the teachers at remote places as well as the students studying in villages. The film is an eye opener.
Nandu Madhav – committed to acting profession
For some people, life goes on happily with whatever profession they have chosen out of personal interest. They just wait for the right time and opportunity to prove their worth, so as to be accepted by one and all. Nandu Madhav who chose the acting profession 25 years ago, did perform on stage and received acclaim for his performance, but to get the recognition of a lead actor in films, he had to wait for 25 years. With the release of ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’ he has suddenly shot into fame.
As a committed actor, I kept on performing, whether on stage or in films with sincerity through whatever roles offered to me and preferred to wait for a major role, till I was asked to play this role of Dadasaheb Phalke.’ says this simple and obedient actor from Goregaon , Mumbai. Marathi Movie world caught up with Nandu Madhav on the first day of the release of his film ‘Harischandrachi factory’. Excerpts from an interview :
Q: How did you prepare yourself to play the character of Dadasaheb Phalke ?
A : From my point of view, when I took up this role, I tried to measure the character with its length and breadth in History. There were certain characteristics of Dadasaheb, which I were to enact as per the facts but there was ample scope for certain other things besides acting. Like, if I were given two pairs of spectacles, at least, it was possible for me to use their placements. Moreover, understanding what kind of treatment the director wants to give to the film, an actor like me had to make alterations, suggested by the director. After all, he is the man who had perceived this idea and every decision of his was to be respected.
Q: Tell us something about your educational background and your other activities besides being an actor ?
A: I spent my childhood in Beed district of Maharashtra and completed my graduation in science and law from Aurangabad. I didn’t do my internship in law as I wasn’t interested in practicing law. Instead, I chose the acting profession. And, since then till date, I have remained loyal to this profession.
Q: We heard a lot about your performance in stage play ‘Wada Chirebandi’. Even heard your co-star praising a lot about your performance in this play. Tell us something more about the role you played ?
A: Actually, ‘Waada Chirebandi’ was in three parts. The two parts that followed made the play stretched to 9 hours, showing the continuity. Fortunately for me, I was the only actor who got an opportunity to play my role in all the three parts. It showed my character attaining old age in the last part. It was a great pleasure performing in this play.
Q: For a full time actor like you must have experienced a time to take a break. What have you attempted during such period ?
A: During the break period, I only diverted my activity by making short films. I even did a Indian film for French film producer, besides doing few Hindi films like ‘Darpan Ke Peechay’, ‘Jis desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai’ and ‘Daayara’. That was only the change I experienced. But, I did not switch over to any other profession.
Q : Any memorable moments during and after completion of ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’?
A: Every day was memorable for me while shooting for this film. There were some happy moments in the form of compliments that I received from people, while the film was shown at different festivals. In Calcutta, after watching this film, Saumitra Chatterjee came and hugged me after the show, appreciating the performances and the film. So many well known critics interacted with our team, on this topic; particularly, as to how the medium can be used effectively to communicate with the audience.
Q: Has Nandu Madhav as an actor suddenly shot into fame, after release of ‘Harishchandrachi factory’ ?
A: You may say so; but as an actor I am committed to this profession since 1985. May be, with my experience as an actor on stage and films, I was picked up for this coveted lead role . I just did my duty with sincerity. And, that itself has brought the change.
Q: So, can we expect that Nandu Madhav will be flooded with offers from both in Marathi and Hindi film producers ?
A: Hope so.
