Over the years we have been watching horror films of Bollywood and Hollywood. Even some Marathi film makers did attempt horror films in the past. But, during the past 10 years, we saw the trend of horror films changing slowly, with introduction of horror-comedy theme in Bollywood. 2007 Bollywood film ‘Bhool Bhulaiya‘ was the best example. Now, director Ajay Phansekar has tried similar type of experiment in Marathi, offering something new to Marathi film lovers through his latest Marathi film ‘Cheater‘.
The film revolves around Abhay ( Vaibhav Tatwawdi) who is the son of a Agnihotri Brahmin father from Pune, who is regarded the highest priest of the community. Abhay’s brother and sister are well qualified. But, this happy go lucky youngster, cheats people for fun. He is in love with Mridula, who arrives in Pune, from Mauritius to study her post graduation in Psychology. One day, Mridula has to leave for Mauritius, as her father Mr. Satam ( Hrishikesh Joshi) has a surprise for their entire family, comprising of Mridula, her TV addict mother ( Aasavari Joshi) her grand mother ( Suhas Joshi) and younger brother ( Jeevan Kalarkar). But, on entering the new house, Mridula’s grand mother has unusual experience. So, she suggests her son to perform Vastu Pooja of the new Villa, to be done only by a Brahmin from Agnihotri family from Pune. When Mridula seeks help from Abhay, he himself arrives, posing as a Swami.

With his very first interaction with Abhay, Mridula’s father doubts his credentials; but Mridula’s mother and Grandmother approve Abhay and believe in his work. Abhay promises to release all negative energy from the house within 5 days. But, the spirit of a young woman appears in front of him, during night hour and challenges him. She seeks help from Abhay to liberate her soul after searching what she wants. But, for that, her soul has to enter the body of a living person. So, one by one she picks up each member of Mridula’s family members, to create comedy scenes in this horror based screenplay. Needless to mention that in the climax of the film, she achieves what she desires.
Good thing about this film is that all the artistes in this film have combined well, to create a perfect timing for comedy, making the audience forget that they are watching a horror film. Hrishikesh Joshi is the best among them. Vaibhav Tatwawdi has proved that he can fit into any type of role. His chemistry with Pooja Sawant has worked very well. Good support comes from Aasavari Joshi and Suhas Joshi. Director Ajay Phansekar has succeeded in entertaining the audience, especially in the second half of the film. But, to enjoy this film, the audience have to keep their logical thinking aside. The film maker already makes it clear, before the start of the film, through a declaration that the film does not promote blind faith. Music in this film is not very impressive, in spite of the voices of reputed singers like Avadhoot Gupte and Sonu Nigam. But, the background music is impressive. B.Laxman’s cinematography has skillfully captured some of the beautiful locations in Mauritius. Santosh Gawde has designed the costumes of the artistes very well.
‘Cheater‘ may appeal to those, who enjoy such type of horror comedy films. For others, it is just an average entertaining film.

‘Cheater’ confirms its release on 13th May 2016

Film maker Ajay Phansekar’s much awaited Marathi film ‘Cheater‘ has finally confirmed its release all over Maharashtra on 13th May 2016. The film was already in the news, as 80% of this film’s shooting was held at various locations of Malaysia. Besides dashing Vaibbhav Tatwawdi and beautiful Pooja Sawant being the lead pair of this film, director Ajay Phansekar has made Sonu Nigam sing two songs in this film, with the title song by Avadhoot Gupte.
Unlike his previous two films, this time, Ajay Phansekar is offering a film with a different subject and is very much confident that the subject of ‘Cheater‘ film will be welcomed by one and all. And, the trailer of this film, which was launched recently, made his intention very clear. Speaking about his role in this film, Vaibhav reacted, “I have played the role of Abhay Agnihotri in the film and and this boy knows only one thing and that is to speak lies, lies, and lies. And my character has shades that have never been seen before in any of my characters.”
Pooja Sawant who is playing the leading lady in the film, also spoke about her role, saying “The name of my character is Mrudula but is addressed as Mimo by everyone. By the way, myself and Vaibhav have worked together after a long time and since my character is different, I really enjoyed playing my role in this film.“
‘Vrundavan’ is influenced by Bollywood & South romantic action films

Over the years, we have been watching formula type of Commercial films in Bollywood and especially in South Indian film industry, which are combination of action, romance, comedy and emotion all packed together. Now, with the passage of time, we notice more stunts of the film’s hero, backed by special effects. Also, with the advancement of technology, we find better sound design, excellent art work and stimulating music, to offer a complete entertainment package to the audience. Latest released film ‘Vrundavan’ falls in this category.
So, if you are willing to keep the logical thinking aside, ‘Vrundavan’ is just an ideal film for you. The film which begins with a love story of Krish( Raqesh Bapat) and Pooja( Pooja Sawant) , later turns into an action packed film, with Krish taking up the difficult task of playing the dummy boyfriend of Pooja’s close friend Bhoomi ( Vaidehi Parshurami), only at the request of his beloved Pooja. This plot itself is not convincing, as no young girl, who is intensely in love with her boyfriend, would let him go with another beautiful girl. But, Pooja trusts Krish and that’s how, we see the predictable drama taking place, in the story of this film, which follows.

But, the new Superman of Marathi films, Krish handles this most difficult situation confidently. He becomes friendly with Bhoomi’s family members, comprising of almost a cricket team, on the style of Shahrukh Khan doing it in films like ‘Pardes’ or ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge .’ He also wins the heart of tough looking father of Bhoomi( Mahesh Manjrekar) and her uncle (Sharad Ponkshe). All seems to be going well,; but Bhoomi’s father decides to get his daughter married to Krish, when we see the predictable drama, with villain opposing the marriage, except for a twist in the screenplay. Needless to say, that all goes well in the end; but the solution sounds funny, almost going on the lines of a typical south Indian action based love story.
The film has some best action scenes, which would even leave behind the action or fight scenes performed by Sahrukh Khan, Ajay Deogan , Salman Khan & Akshay Kumar in their previous Bollywood films. So, Raqesh Bapat turns the new angry young man and Super hero of Marathi films. The entire film belongs to him, as he has scenes with almost all artistes in the film and he has done well, displaying his quick reflexes, perfect body language and good dialogue delivery. Good support comes from Pooja Sawant, though she doesn’t find much importance in this film. But, Vaidehi Parshurami steals the show, as she not only looks good, but has also performed well, displaying her dance skills too.
There is a big list supporting artistes in this film, but Ashok Saraf, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sharad Ponskse, Mohan Joshi, Bharat Ganeshpure , Aarti Solanki, Uday Tikekar find suitable roles. The villain played by Kumar Hegde is just namesake and doesn’t find much scope. Music by AmitRaj is the USP of this film. All the songs have been picturised well, with good choreography. Good cinematography by V.Vasudeva Rao is also the plus point of this film, besides special effects used in action scenes.
Regular Marathi film lovers, who love to watch realistic films, may not like this film; but there are film lovers, who enjoy watching films like ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Lai Bhari’ and similar south films, may enjoy watching this film. By the way, this film is a remake of 2010 telugu film ‘Brindavanam’and therefore, we very much miss the Marathi touch in this film, except for the Govinda song.

Pooja Sawant survives, despite major fire during her event

The occasion was celebration on the occasion of ‘make in India’ event Maharashtra Rajani, at Mumbai’s Girgaon chaupati. It all happened, all of a sudden, as if it was a shooting for an action film. Big ‘B’ Amitabh Bachchan had just finished his event and popular Marathi actress Pooja Sawant stepped in to perform the popular Lavani ‘Mala Jaoo Dya Na Ghari…’ along with a group of dancers.
Though people seated in the front rows, including VIPs like chief minister of Maharashtra and delegates of different countries could see the fire spreading under the stage, actress Pooja Sawant and her group kept on going. Perhaps, they might have thought that it was artificially created smoke, which we usually see during such events. But, it was only when the security people went close to the stage shouting and asking them to leave the stage, they realized some trouble and left the podium.
There were many others, including actor Shreyas Talpade , Anchor Vivek Oberoi and 500 performers, including children, who were immediately shifted to a safer place. Though, it was a quick rescue operation, with no injuries, reported, Pooja is yet to recover from the shock.
