Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Psycho thrillers are not new to Marathi film industry; but, a mind twisting psychological thriller with a gripping screenplay is really something new to Marathi cinema. Writer-Director Prasad Achrekar, who is the grandson of legendary art director M. R. Achrekar, has offered his debut film ‘Akalpith’, with the help of young Snehal Pendurkar, who besides writing this riveting screenplay, has also handled the graphic art of this film, during flashbacks very well.

‘Akalpith’ begins with the special meeting of the Jury with the judge, where the public prosecutor seeks the help of a renowned female psychologist, to study the past history and the statement of the alleged psycho killer. As their proceedings go on, the film also shows the actual happenings that led to a situation, where the accused pleads ‘not guilty’ and poses himself as a sick person, suffering from a trauma; as argued by the defence lawyer.

Dr. Mohan Agashe, Renuka ShahaneThe actual argument and discussion on the case begins in post interval stage, after the audience witness the entire episode of the actual happening, till the accused is shown with a pistol in his hands, about to fire his shots at his wife and his cousin, who together had planned his murder at the cousin’s bungalow, located at a remote place.

The film begins with the Public prosecutor Ms. Saranjame, seeking the help of a renowned psychologist (Renuka Shahane) to study the case of a young murder accused, who is trying to prove himself innocent, with the help of a defence lawyer, in absence of the evidence. She wants the psychologist to help her to prove the heinous act of the accused; during the meeting of the Jury with the judge. Simultaneously, we witness on the screen, the actual happening of the event, as recorded by the accused Milind (Abhinay Sawant) in his statement. So, we find his wife Shweta (Rutul Patil) making quick phone calls to unknown persons.

When both husband and wife leave for a long drive on a weekend, they come across Milind’s cousin Vishal (Ashutosh Patki), who suggests Milind and his wife to spend the week end at his bungalow at a remote place, which is close to the place they meet . So, it is known to the audience that it’s a planned trap for Milind. A terrible looking watchman guarding the bungalow that night and warning them not to step out of the bungalow suggests the past history of that place with series of unsolved murders taken place around in the past.

As everything gets set as per the plan, a stranger with the name of Raj (Sumedh Gaikwad) walks into the bungalow, for shelter as his car goes out of order. He tries to make a phone call; but doesn’t get his line. Shweta misunderstands him as a hired killer; having arrived a day before and is confused. But, he turns out to be from the same college of Milind. So, both Milind and Raj come closer talking about their good old college days, that night. In the meanwhile, Raj comes to know about the affair between Vishal and Milind’s wife. He is asked to keep quite by Vishal. In the meanwhile, Shweta and Vishal’s plan to kill Milind, is foiled by Milind himself. Next day morning, when the real contract killer arrives, he too is confused about his target, after noticing three men around, instead of one.

Milind with the help of Raj, manages to convince the contract killer, offering more money and Milind acquires the pistol from the contract killer, aiming it at his wife Shweta first; when the film breaks for interval. In his defence, Milind claims that he could not remember anything after that scene; and that he had lost his memory. However, in post interval session, when the judge asks to present him before the jury, Milind is brought with his hands tied on a wheelchair. During this trial,( which is held in house, instead of the courtroom); he reveals the judge two new stories, recollected by him; while he was brought by Raj in a car back to Mumbai. The psychologist is almost close top grill Milind, on the basis of his past and recent paintings, when the judge gives his final verdict. The film ends with an unexpected climax, which is all about the mind game. So, watch each and every scene in this film, with full attention.

In the role of Milind , Abhinay Sawant finds a good lead role, to open his actual innings in Marathi films, though, he had appeared before in a small role through Kedar Shinde’s multi starrer film. Music director Ashok Patki’s son Ashutosh Patki also makes a good debut, in second lead, through the role of Vishal. In the role of Shweta, Rutul Patil makes an impressive debut. Having performed on stage, this Nashik girl looks very confident in every scene that she has to her share. Another newcomer Sumedh Gaikwad has also played his part like a true professional actor, though in real life, he is a still photographer. Among the supporting artistes, Dr. Mohan Agashe, Nirmitee Sawant, Atul Todankar, Renuka Shahane and others, have performed their roles with full conviction, and very naturally. Director Prasad Achrekar has handled the direction of this film very efficiently. It wasn’t an easy job; but having been influenced by the stories of Sherlock Holmes, he has received good support from Snehal Pendurkar in the screenplay.

Those who love to watch psycho thrillers, this film is a real treat for them. Young Cinematographers Amit Suresh Kudoth and Nishank Mathure, offer a visual delight, by generating interest, in every scene. Background score by Saurabh Bhalerao is well suited to this novel plot in Marathi cinema. The film does have few flaws, but looking at the sincere effort of the young team in presenting this psycho thriller, they can be ignored. Good work Prasad; keep it up..

In spite of the recession period in other sectors, the Marathi film industry stood firm with good business during the year 2009. Even the fear of swine flu did not deter the enthusiastic audience from watching the films in theatres in places like Pune and surroundings which generally attract a good crowd for Marathi films. In fact, the strike observed by producers and distributors of Hindi films, indirectly helped a Marathi film like Mee Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy, which was released around that period. The multiplex owners in Maharashtra welcomed this film, which made a good business for them too.

Year 2009 also saw the arrival of big wigs like Eros entertainment, Zee talkies and Sanjay Ghodavat Group entering the business and offering a good distribution network and required publicity that was very much required to popularise Marathi films. To name a few, films likeEk Daav Dhobi Pachaad, Gaiir,Jogwa and Rita did a good business. At the same time, a sensible films like Gabhricha Paus invited the attention of foreigners during various Film festivals abroad. Both Harischandrachi Factory and Jogwa staked their claim for India’s entry for Oscars with their universal subject and finest presentation; but Harischandrachi Factory which had an edge overJogwa for being the film made on the life of the Grand old man of Indian cinema, was finally selected.

It looked like that the new cinema had almost taken over from the traditional comedy films of 80’s and 90’s which remained dominated by Ashok saraf and Laxmikant Berde. Today, we find lots of new faces displaying their talents through new subjects. Renuka Shahane tried a new experiment with her own production through Rita by making Pallavi Joshi to play lead opposite an ageing hero of Hindi films Jackie Shroff. She was more confident of her script. And, her experiment did work well .Sukhaant directed by Sanjay Surkar and Samaantar directed by Amol Palekar offered the audience totally different subjects, which were so necessary to change the taste of audience.

There were films likeGandha ,Made in China and Lonavala Bypass which were also based on new subjects, succeeded in inviting the attention of new audience particularly in multiplexes. While the traditional comedy films continued during 2009 with the focus on big screens, but except for Ek Daav Dhobi Pachhad no other film could pull the crowds. Among the new directors, Satish Rajwade invited the attention of one and all for offering two hits.

What is more appreciated about today’s Marathi films is that there are more technically perfect films with better cinematic presentation. We also saw Ajay- Atul offering best of music in many films. At the same time we should also appreciate the efforts put in by all those cinematographers, sound & editing experts and choreographers. With 2009 now coming to an end, all eyes on 2010 which welcomes a bunch of Marathi films with new subjects lined up during the month of January, to offer some more variety. But, we are eagerly waiting for that most prestigious Oscar award to be won by a marathi film. Will ‘Harischandrachi Factory’ succeed in doing so ?

Movie Review by: Priyanka Dahale

We always quivers from our past, present if it is painful. Even we never think about any relation, which is, cannot be accepted by society. Very few dare to face their past, their painful present and also dare to live unacceptable relation openly. Rita is the movie, which is based on the above lines concluded from Shanta Gokhle’s book. In the Marathi film industry, this movie gets special significance due to a sensible direction of Renuka Shahane, and also due to different presentation of different story.

Rita Welinkar is the main character in this film. Rita is the girl who got an English environment in her family by her father and mother. The image of her mother in her eyes is ‘a perfumed women’ just due to her high cultured, high fashioned lifestyle. She never saw original shade of mother’s love in her mother’s eyes. While growing in ‘conventry’ environment, suddenly a problem occurs in her family and she had to take all the responsibility of the family on her delicate shoulders. During this journey of a common struggle she met Viththal Salvi who is 15 years elder than her. As the time passes she realized that she is in love with Salvi. Same case about Salvi. And Rita starts a new life to understand herself and also to live for herself. She built up her own world with Salvi.

Pallavi Joshi

But lots of social, mental problems arise in their life due to their unacceptable relation. Rita always prefers to live openly, to make relations openly with divine and clear mind. But the situation does not allow her to live in her own way. In this travel one of her friend Saraswati helps her to stand strongly after facing storms.
The story puts lots of questions before the viewers patiently and in a decent way. Pallavi Joshi and Jackey Shroff had played roles of Rita and Salvi excellently. Mohen Aagashe, Makarand Deshpande, Renuka Shahane are the remarkable actors in this film who played their characters artistically.

The whole film have southern touch in its scenes, dialogues that give a beautiful feel of wonderful nature to viewers. Taufic Quereshi’s background music suits this feel very beautifully. This movie is the example of a ideal and sensible Marathi movie.

Renuka Shahane, Actress

Renuka Shahane

Somebody has rightly said, “So many languages in this world and smile speaks them all” So, you can imagine how many people in this world Renuka Shahane must have communicated with, through her pleasant smile. If you ask her, she smiles; adding you to the unaccountable list of admirers. This popular actress and TV anchor, known for her characteristic smile, has now turned a film maker with her new Marathi film ‘Rita’. This will also be her directorial debut, as besides direction she has also written screenplay and dialogues of this film. Based on the original novel ‘Rita’ penned by her mother- Shanta Gokhale, Renuka has hardly made any changes to bring alive the Rita Welinkar of 1995 on mega screen. Having assertively opted for her longtime friend Pallavi Joshi, to play the central character of Rita, she is now happy that the film has come out very well and is now due for release on 4th September 2009.

Renuka Shahane, Actress

MMW caught up with Renuka Shahane, when she was promoting her film ‘Rita’ through a talk show, where her friend Pallavi Joshi was also present. Read, what Renuka has to say about her film â’Rita’.

Renuka Shahane What made you go for Pallavi to play the central role of Rita ?
I was looking for a female who would look 17 and later play the natural role at 40; and I could not think of anyone else than Pallavi. Believe me, it is not only because of our intimate friendship I selected her, but only because the role was tailor made to suit her.

Why did you opt for Jackie Shroff to play Rita’s boss-Mr. Salvi, when there were so many talented actors around, in Marathi film industry ?
Renuka: The character of Mr. Salvi- the boss, demanded a particular virtuousness, and Jackie perfectly fitted into that requirement, as described in the novel. Moreover, I could also make my producer happy by increasing the star value of my film.

And, how about yourself, playing the role of Rita’s friend  Saraswati ?
Frankly speaking, when we finalized everything about this film, I had almost exceeded my budget. If I were to offer to anyone, I had to spend extra amount. By playing Saraswati myself, I saved on the cost. But, I am happy that both myself and Pallavi could get a chance to act together in the same film.

How do you look at the relationship between Rita and her boss, when it blossoms into love affair? Isn’t it ex- marital relationship ?
The relationship between Salvi-the boss and Rita is not like love at first sight. It is an outcome of the circumstances. Nowhere in the film, the Boss is shown disloyal to his family. He cares a lot for them. In the script, it is shown that Rita, whom he supports right from the age of 17, almost becomes a part of his family, but Rita realizes that they are doing something wrong. It is about the conscience from both sides. It is at this time she seeks advice from her friend Saraswati. It is the concluding part of the film, that will make all your doubts clear about human relationships.

Who are the other important artistes to match with the characters of original story ?
In ‘Rita’ you will find Dr. Mohan Agashe playing Rita Welinkar’s father and Suhasini Muley playing her mother. I haven’t paid much attention on popular artistes to play Dolly and Sherry, but Sangeeta’s role which is well defined, is played by talented actress Sai Tamhankar. I have opted for Medha Jambhotkar to play Ms.Salvi’s ( Jackie’s wife) while Geetu Kulkarni plays Mariamma.

This movie is mainly describing the woman’s plight in this world, but in your opinion how would you describe a woman in present lifestyle ?
I would like to salute all those women, especially the working women, who are shouldering the home as well as office responsibilities. Watching them rush for their office during morning hours and witnessing some of them even getting prepared with kitchen work, by cutting the vegetables during bus or train journey , while returning home from office; is something that really needs a special mention. Some of them even take the lessons of their kids after dinner time. It is a great sacrifice from their side. They hardly find time to watch TV or even to rest, except for that incomplete sleep.

In that case, whom do you call an ideal husband ?
In today’s busy lifestyle, every husband must share the responsibilities at home front too. There are certain things which husbands can do, like giving time to the children, while mother is busy and also help his wife to whatever manner possible from his side. In my own case, Ashu took time off for three months from his work, to give time to my children, when he knew that I had to work on my film. It came automatically from his side, understanding the situation.

What’s your idea about living happy married life ?
According to me, small arguments turn into big clashes. Avoid arguments as far as possible. Even if it happens, close the argument at that time itself. Never carry forward the same for the next day. That causes more disturbance in relationship. Good , healthy Communication is the key for cordial relationship. Both husband and wife should play their respective roles like good friends.
